Abstract:A three-dimensional (3D) zinc metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Zn-2(mu(3)-OH)(cpta)(4,4 '-bipy)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) (4,4'-bipy = 4,4 '-bipyridine) was solvothermally synthesized base on a semirigid V-shaped multicarboxylate ligand 2-4(-carboxyphenoxy)terephthalic acid (H(3)cpta). 1 has a complicated 3D structure in which the tetramer [Zn-4(mu(3)-O)(2)O10N4] second building units (SBUs) are interconnected by the V-shaped cpta(3-) and 4,4'-bipy ligands. 1 shows good selective and sensitive fluorescence sensing effect for detecting Cr(III)/Cr(VI) ions and p-nitrotolune (p-NP). The detection limits of Cr3+, Cr2O72-, and p-NP can reach 5.55 x 10(-6), 6.91 x 10(-6) and 4.01 x 10(-6) M, respectively. Moreover, 1 can be recycled at least four times for sensing Cr3+ and Cr2O72- ions. In addition, the luminescence intensity of 1 is strongly correlated with the pH value in a pH range from 2 to 12.

Abstract:Two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, [Zn2(m-2mbix)(HEA)2·2H2O]n (1) and { [Ni(m-2mbix)(HEA)]·3H2O}n (2) (m-2mbix = 1,3-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, H2HEA = 1,2-phenylenediacetic acid), respectively, were successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal structures revealed that 1 and 2 were two-dimensional structure and two-dimensional (4,4)-topological layer structure, respectively. In addition, the complex 1 can function as a turn-off luminescent sensor to sensitively and selectively sensing Fe3+, CrO42− and Cr2O72− ions in aqueous media.

Abstract:A sensor with a red‐emission signal is successfully obtained by the solvothermal reaction of Eu3+ and heterofunctional ligand bpydbH2 (4,4′‐(4,4′‐bipyridine‐2,6‐diyl) dibenzoic acid), followed by terminal‐ligand exchange in a single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal transformation. As a result of treatments both before and after the metal–organic framework formation, accessible Lewis‐base sites and coordinated water molecules are successfully anchored onto the host material, and they act as signal transmission media for the recognition of analytes at the molecular level. This is the first reported sensor based on a metal–organic framework (MOF) with multi‐responsive optical sensing properties. It is capable of sensing small organic molecules and inorganic ions, and unprecedentedly it can discriminate among the homologues and isomers of aliphatic alcohols as well as detect highly explosive 2,4,6‐trinitrophenol (TNP) in water or in the vapor phase. This work highlights the practical application of luminescent MOFs as sensors, and it paves the way toward other multi‐responsive sensors by demonstrating the incorporation of various functional groups into a single framework.

Abstract:By incorporating an anthracene moiety into a framework, a multiresponsive luminescent metal-organic framework (1) has been synthesized, which exhibits both direct chemiluminescence (CL) and dual tunable photoluminescence. By utilizing the CL, 1 has been explored as a selective visual sensor for hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, 1 also exhibits tunable fluorescence response toward different analytes. For electron-rich aromatics, "turn-on" and "turnoff" responses can be simply switched by varying the excitation wavelength. For nitroaromatics, 1 exhibits novel linear quantitative quenching response. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments have been carried out to study the unique fluorescence response. The multiple luminescence properties and dual tunable sensing response indicate that incorporating anthracene moieties into frameworks should be a promising strategy to develop unprecedented luminescent materials with remarkable sensing properties.

Abstract:Photochromic materials have shown very promising applications. However, developing new photochromic materials remains a huge challenge. In this work, a new photochromic organic molecule, namely 6,13-bis(di(pyridin-4-yl)methylene)-6,13-dihydropentacene ( L ), has been successfully synthesized. Its photochromic mechanism has been elucidated. The dihydropentacene-based photochromic organic molecule was firstly applied as functional ligands to construct LMOF-based sensor {Zn( L )(TPA)·H 2 O} n ( 1 ; LMOF = luminescent metal-organic framework; H 2 TPA = terephthalic acid). 1 exhibits a three-dimensional (3-D) two-fold interpenetrated architecture, excellent stabilities, luminescent and photochromic properties. 1 can highly sensitively detect Cu 2+ and MnO 4 − in aqueous medium by luminescent quenching effect. Notably, the quenching constants of 1′ ( 1 after photochromism) towards Cu 2+ and MnO 4 − are 6.4 and 6.5 times higher than those of 1 , respectively, which demonstrates significantly enhanced sensing sensitivities for 1′ . Furthermore, 1′ can effectively identify MnO 4 − from similar strong oxidizing anions CrO 4 2− and Cr 2 O 7 2− . This dual-response luminescent sensor exhibits good recyclability, and its quenching sensing mechanisms have been discussed in detail. This work will contribute to the development of efficient photochromic luminescent sensors.

Abstract:A red-emitting Eu metal-organic framework (EuMOF) is successfully obtained by S.-Y. Song, H.-J. Zhang, and co-workers and serves as a multi-responsive luminescent sensor toward different organic molecules and inorganic ions. On page 4034, the red emission signal is changed after exposing the EuMOF to the analytes under UV light excitation: some of them even quench the luminescence. This work paves the way for the practical application of luminescent MOF sensors for pollutant detection.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional Eu(III) metal–organic framework Eu(III)-MOF-1 formulated as [Eu3(BDC)4.5(H2O)(DMF)2] (H2BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid), has been successfully synthesized by solvothermal methods and characterized by structural analyses and luminescence studies. Crystallographic studies reveal that the Eu-MOF-1 exhibits an unusual 3D framework based on 1D metal-carboxylate chains. Significantly, the luminescence explorations demonstrate that the Eu-MOF-1 is the first multi-responsive fluorescence sensor for sensing biomarker 1-naphthol (1-N) of carbaryl exposure, Fe3+ ions and MnO4 − ions with high sensitivity, selectivity and excellent recyclability through luminescence quenching. Moreover, the possible mechanisms of selective detection have been investigated in detail. This material could be a promising luminescent sensor for practical applications.

Abstract:A new lanthanide metal–organic framework (Ln-MOF) {[Eu(DPB)(H2O)](Me2NH2+)}n (1) (H4DPB = (1,1′:3′,1′’-terphenyl)-3,3′’,5,5′’-tetracarboxylic acid）was synthesized under solvothermal conditions and presented a fascinating three-dimensional (3D) framework with 4,8-connected diamond topology, which were built from Eu3+ ions and tetra carboxylate groups. 1 showed strong red luminescence emission in the solid state at room temperature and exhibited good stability in different solvents. 1 could be used as a multi-responsive luminescent sensor for hemin and p-Nitrophenol (4-NP) with detection limits of 3.91 × 10−6 M and 1.98 × 10−4 mM, respectively. Moreover, using 1 as a filler and poly (vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) as matrix, a mixed matrix membrane 1@PVDF was successfully prepared. 1@PVDF also exhibited fluorescence emission comparable to that of 1 and could be used for hemin and 4-NP sensing with good selectivity and remarkable recyclability.

Luminescent Sensing Behaviors of a Lead Metal–Organic Framework and Its Binary/Ternary Composites: Increasing Selectivity and Sensitivity through a Multiemissive Approach

Abstract:Self-assembly reactions of Pb2+ and L2– (H2L = 4-(5,7-dioxopyrrolo[3,4-f]benzimidazol-6-yl)benzoic acid) lead to two new coordination networks: [Pb3(L)3(H2O)2]·10DMF·6.5H2O (1) is a metal–organic framework (MOF) with a 3D (3,3,8)-connected topology, and [PbL(DMSO)2] (2) has a 2D nonporous neutral (6,3) honeycomb network. 1 can accommodate a green-emitting neutral dye (fluorescein, FRS) and/or a red-emitting complex cation ([Ru(bpy)3]2+, [Ru]2+) to form three series of multiemission composites: 1, [Ru]2+@1, and (FRS+[Ru]2+)@1. Luminescence sensing experiments reveal that 1, B4 (0.017 wt % 1), and G1 (1.261 wt % FRS + 0.463 wt % [Ru]2+@1) all show selective luminescence signal changes (emission intensities) toward different volatile organic solvents and nitroaromatic vapors. However, G1 exhibits 2D ratiometric sensing behaviors based on the emission intensity ratios of IMOF/IFRS and IMOF/I[Ru]2+, which is much more selective and sensitive than the 1D ratiometric (IMOF/IFRS) sensing of B4 and the single-emission sensing of 1. Abstract:Stimuli-responsive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique advantages and motivating application prospects have gained development rapidly in recent years. Thus, it is of great significance to develop stimuli-responsive MOFs with multi-functional properties. Here, a four-fold interpenetrated 3D (three-dimensional) framework Cd(II)-MOF is developed from an extended viologen carboxylate ligand. The MOF shows reversible photochromism due to the formation of extend viologen radicals through photoinduced electron transfer. In addition, the fluorescence can be regulated reversibly in the photochromic process. The MOF also shows potential application prospects in erasable inkless printing and sensing UO2 2+ ions. The luminescence quenching is mainly attributed to the energy resonance transfer mechanism. This work provides a possible path for developing stimuli-responsive MOFs and potential applications in the field of optical devices and luminescent sensors.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), self-assembled from metal ions with organic ligands, are well known for their intriguing framework topology, permanent porosity, and tunable optical properties and have shown great promise for a good number of applications. Over the past few years, luminescent MOFs have attracted growing attention, especially for developing various luminescent sensors, by virtue of their excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. In this feature article, we highlight some of the recent significant progress in this active research field, and provide a comprehensive review on luminescent MOFs as sensory materials for diverse sensing applications including for metal ions, anions, small molecules and gases, nitroaromatics and explosives, temperature, as well as other aspects.

Abstract:A multifunctional lanthanide‐organic framework Tb−TCA (H3TCA = tricarboxytriphenylamine) comprising a triphenylamine moiety as an efficient luminescence sensitizer is synthesized by a solvothermal method and structurally characterized. Tb−TCA exhibits lanthanide‐based emission (540 nm) and triphenylamine emission (435 nm) after excitation at 350 nm and works as a luminescent chemosensor towards salicylaldehyde with a sensitivity of 10 ppm under optimized conditions. Tb−TCA features a high concentration of Lewis acid Tb3+ sites and Lewis base triphenylamine sites on its internal surfaces; it thus enables both Knoevenagel and cyanosilylation reactions in a size‐selective fashion. The ratiometric fluorescent response towards aldehydes (I540/I435) demonstrates that the absorption of the porous material is size selective, and the interactions between the aldehyde molecules and the Tb3+ ions play a dominant role in the absorption and activation of the aldehyde substrates. In particular, these studies provide opportunities to directly validate the sorption sites and the catalytic mechanism of the multifunctional Ln metal–organic framework material by luminescence.
