Abstract:The self-assembly of colloidal spheres into ordered nanostructures is one of the most common methods of fabricating crystal films, but the resulting films usually have small areas, muted structural colors, and weak mechanical properties. This paper presents a simple method for the large-scale fabrication of polymer crystal films with vivid structural colors and robust mechanical properties. In this approach, when aqueous polymer colloids, colloidal silica particles, and a small quantity of carbon black are blended and then cast on substrates by the casting method to evaporate water, three-dimensional ordered structures are produced, directly forming large-scale polymer crystal films with intense and tunable structural colors and strong mechanical properties.

Abstract:Abstract Structurally colored composite films, composed of orderly arranged colloids in polymeric matrix, are emerging flexible optical materials, but their production is bottlenecked by time-consuming procedures and limited material choices. Here, we present a mild approach to producing large-scale structurally colored composite films by shearing supramolecular composites composed of polymers and colloids with supramolecular interactions. Leveraging dynamic connection and dissociation of supramolecular interactions, shearing force stretches the polymer chains and drags colloids to migrate directionally within the polymeric matrix with reduced viscous resistance. We show that meter-scale structurally colored composite films with iridescence color can be produced within several minutes at room temperature. Significantly, the tunability and diversity of supramolecular interactions allow this shearing approach extendable to various commonly-used polymers. This study overcomes the traditional material limitations of manufacturing structurally colored composite films by shearing method and opens an avenue for mildly producing ordered composites with commonly-available materials via supramolecular strategies.

Organized Self-Emulsification toward Structural Color

Abstract:The formation of water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsions can be well-controlled through an organized self-emulsification mechanism in the presence of rigid bottlebrush amphiphilic block copolymers. Nanoscale water droplets with well-controlled diameters form ordered spatial arrangements within the micron-scale oil droplets. Upon solvent evaporation, solid microspheres with hexagonal close packed nanopore arrays are obtained resulting in bright structural colors. The reflected color is precisely tunable across the whole visible light range through tailoring contour length of the bottlebrush molecule. In-situ observation of the W/O interface using confocal laser scanning microscopy provides insights into the mechanism of the organized self-emulsification. This work provides a powerful strategy for the fabrication of structural colored materials in an easy and scalable manner.

Abstract:Structural color films with high brightness, saturation and robust mechanical properties have been prepared by a two-step photopolymerization method using colloidal inks. The color saturation of the films could be controlled by the mass of the carbon black (CB) particles and polymerization time while the colors are closely related to the diameter of the 2 microspheres. The inks were prepared by dispersing 2 microspheres with black CB particles as the core and inorganic SiO 2 as the shell in poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate) (PEGDA) resins. The results of bending and rubbing tests showed that the addition of PEGDA prevented the formation of film cracks and enhanced mechanical properties without altering the original color. Structurally colored films were directly attached to a variety of substrates, including glass, metal, paper, and fabric. These colloidal inks have potential application in the fields of displays, paints, and other color-related fields.

Abstract:Self-assembly of colloidal spheres is the most frequently used method for structural colors, but the chroma of the structural colors is usually so low that people cannot observe it under natural conditions. This paper presents a facile method for fabrications of vivid structural colors by doping carbon black into the self-assembly of colloidal polymer spheres and nanosilica particles. This approach can generate very gorgeous structural colors which can be very easily seen under natural conditions. The fabrication conditions for the self-assembly of composite dispersions of polymer/silica/carbon black were optimized to obtain colloidal crystals with vivid colors. Thus, robust mechanical properties, large-scale, and brilliant structural colors can guarantee the obtained crystal films to find practical applications, which are demonstrated by the fact that the successful applications of structural colors beautify the original simple and tedious surface of bamboo strand board (BSB).

Abstract:This paper presents a novel and facile approach to fabricate robust structural color directly through the self-assembly of soft colloidal polymer spheres by the aid of nanosilica at ambient pressure and temperature without complicated equipment. In this approach, soft colloidal polymer spheres are synthesized by emulsion polymerization and then blended with colloidal silica to obtain a nanocomposite dispersion. When this dispersion is loaded onto the surface of composite materials, the colloidal polymer spheres and silica beads can directly self-assemble into robust crystal films with vivid structural colors. Neither soft matrix nor post-treatment are needed. The bright colors could be obtained and tuned easily by adjusting the size of the polymer spheres without any dyes or pigments. Compared with traditional substrates such as glass and polypropylene, the reflectivity and the attachment strength were much higher because the surfaces of the composite materials are more rich in polar OH-groups, which may help the self-assembly and attachment strength.

Abstract:Liquid-air interface self-assembly (such as the classic L-B method) is the most popular way to form high-quality colloidal crystal monolayers, yet still limited by sophisticated equipment, time-consuming processes and small preparation area. Here, a tension gradient-driven nanoparticle self-assembly method is proposed to realize the high-efficiency and low-cost fabrication of large-area (25 x 18 cm(2)) colloidal crystal film. The periodic nanoparticle structures composed of various particles with different materials and diameters can be easily obtained in a short time and transferred to various substrates under this self-assembly method. And the preparation area is one to two orders of magnitude higher than the conventional self-assembly method. The simulation results align well with experiments, indicating that the Marangoni effect induced by tension gradient is the main driving force for self-assembly. The influence of various self-assembly parameters is investigated. Inspired by amber, a periodic particle/PDMS/nano-silica particles composite film is further designed to form a large-area durable structural color display. The structural color of the composite film is surprisingly different from that of the periodic particle which was mainly due to the unique semi-coated structure. The composite film has outstanding super-hydrophobic and self-cleaning performance with a broad impact on durable structural color displays/sensors, anti-counterfeiting and other aspects.

Abstract:Artificial structural colors based on short-range-ordered amorphous photonic structures (APSs) have attracted great scientific and industrial interest in recent years. However, the previously reported methods of self-assembling colloidal nanoparticles lack fine control of the APS coating and fixation on substrates and poorly realize three-dimensional (3D) conformal coatings for objects with irregular or highly curved surfaces. In this paper, atomization deposition of silica colloidal nanoparticles with poly(vinyl alcohol) as the additive is proposed to solve the above problems. By finely controlling the thicknesses of APS coatings, additive mixing of noniridescent structural colors is easily realized. Based on the intrinsic omnidirectional feature of atomization, a one-step 3D homogeneous conformal coating is also readily realized on various irregular or highly curved surfaces, including papers, resins, metal plates, ceramics, and flexible silk fabrics. The vivid coatings on silk fabrics by atomization deposition possess robust mechanical properties, which are confirmed by rubbing and laundering tests, showing great potential in developing an environmentally friendly coloring technique in the textile industry.

Abstract:Periodic porous structures have been introduced into functional films to meet the requirements of various applications. Though many approaches have been developed to generate desired structures in polymeric films, few of them can effectively and dynamically achieve periodic porous structures. Here, a facile way is proposed to introduce periodic stratified porous structures into polyelectrolyte films. A photo-crosslinkable polyelectrolyte film of poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) and photoreactive poly(acrylic acid) derivative (PAA-N-3) is prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. Stratified crosslinking of the PEI/PAA-N-3 film is generated basing on standing-wave optics. The periodic stratified porous structure is constructed by forming pores in noncrosslinked regions in the film. Thanks to the dynamic mobility of polyelectrolytes, this structural controlment can be repeated several times. The size of pores corresponding to the layer spacing of the film contributes to the structural colors. Furthermore, structural color patterns are fabricated in the film by selective photo-crosslinking using photomasks. Although the large-scale structural controlment in thick (micron-scale and above) films needs to be explored further, this work highlights the periodic structural controlment in polymeric films and thus presents an approach for application potentials in sensor, detection, and ink-free printing.

Abstract:<p>Multiresponsive elastic poly(methyl methacrylate‐butyl acrylate) (P(MMA‐BA)) copolymer nanoparticles with controlled sizes are fabricated through a one‐step method, which further serve as building blocks for the construction of multiresponsive films via self‐assembly. Taking advantage of the relatively low glass transition temperature and the core–shell structure of the copolymer nanoparticles, they possess the capacity to partially deform and fuse at room temperature under dry status, eventually resulting in the enhancement of the mechanical properties as well as the control of optical properties in the assembled ordered structures. The generated elastic films not only can control the concealment or exhibition of the designed color information, but also can rapidly respond to external stimuli such as the solvent, pH, and tensile force in a reversible fashion. These functional elastic copolymer nanoparticles have potential applications in dynamic color display, optical sensing, and anticounterfeiting.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Photonic crystals (PCs) constructed from colloidal building blocks have attracted increasing attention because their brilliant structural colors may find broad applications in paints, sensors, displays, and security devices. However, producing high‐quality structural colors on flexible substrates such as textiles in an efficient and scalable manner remains a challenge. Here a robust and ultrafast approach to produce industrial‐scale colloidal PCs by the shear‐induced assembly of liquid colloidal crystals of polystyrene beads pre‐formed spontaneously over a critical volume fraction is demonstrated. The pre‐crystallization of colloidal crystals allows their efficient assembly into large‐scale PCs on flexible fabric substrates under shear force. Further, by programming the wettability of the fabric substrate with hydrophilic–hydrophobic regions, this shear‐based assembly strategy can conveniently generate pre‐designed patterns of complex structural colors. This assembly strategy brings structural coloration to flexible fabrics at a scale suitable for commercial applications; therefore, it holds the potential to revolutionize the coloration technology in the textile industry.

Large-Scale and Wide-Gamut Coloration at the Diffraction Limit in Flexible, Self-Assembled Hierarchical Nanomaterials

Abstract:Unveiling physical phenomena that generate controllable structural coloration is at the center of significant research efforts due to the platform potential for the next generation of printing, sensing, displays, wearable optoelectronics components, and smart fabrics. Colors based on e-beam facilities possess high resolutions above 100k dots per inch (DPI), but limit manufacturing scales up to 4.37 cm2 , while requiring rigid substrates that are not flexible. State-of-art scalable techniques, on the contrary, provide either narrow gamuts or small resolutions. A common issue of current methods is also a heterogeneous resolution, which typically changes with the color printed. Here, a structural coloration platform with broad gamuts exceeding the red, green, and blue (RGB) spectrum in inexpensive, thermally resistant, flexible, and metallic-free structures at constant 101 600 DPI (at the diffraction limit), obtained via mass-production manufacturing is demonstrated. This platform exploits a previously unexplored physical mechanism, which leverages the interplay between strong scattering modes and optical resonances excited in fully 3D dielectric nanostructures with suitably engineered longitudinal profiles. The colors obtained with this technology are scalable to any area, demonstrated up to the single wafer (4 in.). These results open real-world applications of inexpensive, high-resolution, large-scale structural colors with broad chromatic spectra.

Abstract:Structural color, a color generated based on physical principles, has broad applications such as displays, optical sensors, and anti-counterfeiting. Traditional methods for producing structural colors are often complex and time-consuming, whereas spray-coating colloidal self-assembly offers a simple and controllable alternative. However, due to the high-pressure atomization process, colloidal inks often form amorphous photonic structures (APSs), making it challenging to precisely control the assembly of colloidal particles on substrates to achieve ordered structures. By rationally designing the composition of colloidal mixed solutions, controlling particle concentration, and adjusting evaporation temperatures, it is possible to effectively regulate the assembly of colloidal particles and obtain angle-dependent iridescent colors. This work proposes a simple spray-coating process that enables the control of both ordered and disordered structures, with tunable optical properties, suitable for colloidal patterning on various substrates. This method not only simplifies the fabrication of photonic crystals (PCs) but also has broad potential, particularly in anti-counterfeiting, where it enables the creation of hard-to-replicate structured patterns with enhanced security.

Abstract:Structurally colored supraparticles, formed from dispersed nanoparticle building blocks through self-assembly, have tremendous potential for applications in displays, coatings, paints, inks, and cosmetics. Mechanical stability and solvent compatibility of supraparticles is critical in these applications. Here, we describe the scalable synthesis of supraparticles via the assembly of nanoparticles composed of synthetic melanin cores with silica shells (SM@SiO2 NPs) using a vortex-assisted reverse emulsion method. We use a hydrogen-bond driven crosslinking strategy employing polyethylene glycol to lock the SM@SiO2 NP building blocks together. This approach yields multicolor photonic supraparticles stable both in organic and aqueous solvents and in the dry state. Supraparticles crosslinked via 4-arm PEG2k withstand at least a 10-fold increase in compressive force when compared to noncrosslinked versions. Capitalizing on the enhanced stability of crosslinked supraparticles, we directly blend them with painting media and apply them as inks.

Abstract:Nanostructures similar to those found in the vividly blue wings of Morpho butterflies and colorful photonic crystals enable structural color through constructive interference of light waves. Different from commonly studied structure-colored materials using periodic structures to manipulate optical properties, we report a previously unrecognized approach to precisely control the structural color and light transmission via a novel photonic colloidal gel without long-range order. Nanoparticles in this gel form micrometer-sized bicontinuous domains driven by the microphase separation of binary solvents. This approach enables dynamic coloration with a precise wavelength selectivity over a broad range of wavelengths extended well beyond the visible light that is not achievable with traditional methods. The dynamic wavelength selectivity is thermally tunable, reversible, and the material fabrication is easily scalable.

Abstract:Thin-film architectures are a staple in a wide range of technologies, such as semiconductor devices, optical coatings, magnetic recording, solar cells and batteries. Despite the industrial success of thin-film technology, mostly due to the easy fabrication and low cost, a fundamental drawback remains: it is challenging to alter the features of the film once fabricated. Here we report a methodology to modify the thickness and sequence of the innermost solid-state thin-film layers. We start with a thin-film stack of amorphous iron oxide and silver. By applying a suitable voltage bias and then reversing it, we can float the silver layer above or below the oxide layer by virtue of the migration of silver atoms. Scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals various sequences and thicknesses of the silver and oxide layers achieved with different experimental conditions. As a proof-of-principle, we show a dynamic change of structural colours of the stack derived from this process. Our results may offer opportunities to dynamically reconfigure thin-film-based functional nanodevices in situ.

Abstract:A facile strategy to prepare high-quality colloidal photonic crystals (PCs) with good visibility is proposed. Based on a high refractive-index material (zinc sulfide), highly monodispersed colloidal particles are successfully produced and assembled into long-range ordered crystalline colloidal arrays. The carbon-based materials are in situ incorporated with the long-range ordered colloidal PCs, which endows PCs with the combined characteristics to simultaneously achieve an intense photonic stop band and excellent control of incoherent light scattering. Owing to these merits, the obtained ZnS colloidal PCs have demonstrated strong brightness with the maximum reflectivity of 98%. Moreover, the coloration, saturation, and viewing angle are all improved. This study provides a straightforward and cost-effective strategy to create structural colors with high-quality visibility, which is expected to facilitate future applications of colloidal PCs.
