Abstract:Rong-Yan Wang, Xiao Zhang, *b Jie-Hui Yu *a and Ji-Qing Xu In this article, three bisimidazole derivatives (1,4-bis(2-ethylimidazol-1-yl)butane, L1; 4,40-di(1H-imidazol-1yl)-1,10-biphenyl, L20; and 1,3-bis(2-ethylimidazol-1-yl)propane, L3) were employed to solvothermally react with AgI in an acidic environment, creating three new 1-D chained iodoargentates [H(L1)][Ag5I6]$DMF (DMF 1⁄4 N,N0-dimethylformamide) 1, [L2][Ag3I5] (L2 1⁄4 4,40-di(1H-imidazol-1-ium)-1,10-biphenyl) 2, and [H2(L3)] [Ag2I4] 3. L2 2+ in 2 originated from the in situ N-alkylation of L20 with the CH3OH solvent. X-ray singlecrystal diffraction analysis reveals that (i) in 1, Ag and I aggregate to form a 1-D tube-like iodoargentate, which exhibits the same topology as the carbon tube; (ii) the chain structure of the iodoargentate in 2 is based on a kind of trinuclear Ag–I cluster, which can be viewed as a segment of the classical cubic M4I4 cluster; (iii) the chain structure of the iodoargentate in 3 is simple, which can be described as a linear arrangement of the AgI4 tetrahedra by sharing edges. The photoluminescence analysis reveals that at 77 K, (i) 1 and 2 emit strong yellow light with ms-grade photoluminescence lifetimes (5.460 ms for 1, 6.931 ms for 2); (ii) 3 possesses photochromic luminescence properties. Upon excitation at 254 nm, it emits blue-green light, whereas upon excitation at 365 nm, it emits yellow light.

Abstract:Two novel Ag(I) complexes zero-dimensional (0D) [Ag(ibz)(Hibz)]2 (Ag1) (Hibz=4-(1H-imidazolyl)benzoic acid) and two-dimensional (2D) [Ag(imbz)(Himbz)]n (Ag2) (Himbz=4-(1H-imidazolyl-1-methyl)benzoic acid) have been synthesized through the hydrothermal method. By changing the ligands from rigid Hibz to flexible Himbz, the distance between two aromatic rings in the ligand is controlled to get different dimensional complexes. Both complexes have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR), elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA). Ag1 is coordinated with two nitrogen atoms, forming a two-coordination linear configuration. While Ag2 possesses interesting 2D frameworks, exhibiting two-fold interpenetrating sql topology structure. The luminescent properties of Ag1 and Ag2 are investigated both in the solid state and in different solvents (DMSO, CH3CN and CH3OH) at 298K and 77K. Ag1 displays stable blue luminescent in the solid state and in solvents at 298K and 77K. Whereas, Ag2 shows tunable luminescence by changing the temperature from 298K to 77K, indicating thermochromic luminescence for Ag2. The emission efficiency of Ag1 and Ag2 is found with quantum yields ranging from 0.073 to 0.208, which is much higher than that of free ligand.
Synthesis and characterization of substituted Schiff-base ligands and their d(10) metal complexes: structure-induced luminescence tuning behaviors and applications in co-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:Nine IIB group complexes, [ZnL1Cl2] (Zn1), [CdL1Cl2] 2 (Cd1), [HgL1Cl2] (Hg1), [ZnL2Cl2] (Zn2), [CdL2Cl2] (Cd2), [HgL2Cl2] (Hg2), [ZnL3Cl2] (Zn3), [CdL3Cl2] (Cd3) and [HgL3Cl2] (Hg3), have been synthesized from the corresponding ortho-(6-methoxy-pyridyl)(CH=NAr) (where Ar = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3), L-1; 4-MeC6H4, L-2; 2-OMeC6H4, L-3) Schiff base and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, H-1 NMR and X-ray single-crystal analysis. Crystallographic studies reveal that the center metal of the complexes adopts a distorted tetrahedron geometry (except for Cd1 and Cd3, which display square pyramidal geometry) and C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bonds and pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions contribute to three-dimensional supramolecular structures. The series of complexes exhibit tunable luminescence from blue, through green, to light yellow by varying the temperature (298 K and 77 K), both in solution and in the solid state. Moreover, the quantum yields range from 0.027 to 0.422, and decrease according to the order of the periodic table (Zn > Cd > Hg). These results indicate that the center atom of the complexes leads to the geometry differences and hence to the tunable luminescence properties. Because Zn1-Zn3 exhibited higher molar extinction coefficients and a distinct absorption region, they were employed as co-sensitizers in ruthenium dye N719-sensitized photoanodes to deliver light-electricity efficiency enhancement, being assembled with counter-electrodes and electrolyte to prepare ZnX/N719 (where ZnX = Zn1, Zn2 and Zn3) co-sensitized dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) devices. The prepared co-absorbent could overcome the deficiency of N719 absorption in the low-wavelength region of the visible spectrum, and offset competitive visible-light absorption of I-3(-). Application of these prepared complexes in N719-sensitized solar cells enhanced their performance by 10-36%, which indicated a potential application of these types of complexes in DSSCs.
Zwitterionic Iridium Complexes: Synthesis, Luminescent Properties, and Their Application in Cell Imaging.

Abstract:A series of phosphorescent zwitterionic iridium(III) complexes, with 4-carboxy-2, 2'-bipyridine-4'-carboxylate (Hdcbpy) as ancillary ligand, Ir(C(wedge)N)(2)(Hdcbpy) (C(wedge)N = 1-phenylpyrazole (ppz), 1-phenyl-pyridine (ppy), 2-(4',6'-difluoro-phenyl)pyridine (dfppy), 1-phenyl-isoquinoline (piq), dibenzo[f,h]quinoxaline (dbq)), were prepared and characterized. Their photophysical properties were studied, and intense luminescence emissions were observed based on metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer ((3)MLCT), ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)LLCT), ligand-centered transitions ((3)LC, i.e., (3)pi --> pi*), or intraligand-charge-transfer ((3)ILCT) excited states, which were confirmed by theoretical calculations. The quantum yield of Ir(dfppy)(2)(Hdcbpy) is as high as 0.106 in aqueous solution. With Hdcbpy as a hydrophilic part, their amphiphilic structures as further confirmed by X-ray single crystal data endow them with different solubilities in phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). The compounds were successfully applied as luminescent dyes for cell imaging in aqueous solution. Their different stain ability in cell imaging was fairly well supported by the experimental data based on the measurement of oil/water partition coefficients and encapsulation/release with liposomes.

Abstract:A series of bisthienylethenes containing imidazole and imidazolium derivatives have been prepared and the products have been characterized by means of NMR and MS. Their photochromic and fluorescent switch properties have been investigated by UV–vis absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra. The fluorescent emissions of these kinds of photochromic compounds can be simply modulated by varying the imidazole groups, which shows that these compounds may have potential application in the design of fluorescent photochromic materials.

Abstract:2-(Anthracenyl)-4,5-bis(2,5-dimethyl(3-thienyl))-1H-imidazole (anbdtiH) has been synthesized. Its three solid-state structures, anbdtiH·CH3Cl (1), anbdtiH·2CH3OH (2) and anbdtiH2·CF3COO·CH3OH·H2O (3), have been constructed by skillfully choosing CHCl3 or CH3OH as the solvent and using or not using CF3COOH, with the aim of modifying the intermolecular hydrogen bonds and/or π···π stacking interactions. The three distinct structures show significantly different solid-state luminescence behaviors, an orange-red emission at 603 nm for 1, a blue emission at 453 nm for 2, and a green emission at 533 nm for 3. Upon grinding, these emission wavelengths exhibit evident variations, a blue-shift of Δλ = 83 nm for 1, a red-shift of Δλ = 20 nm for 2, and a blue-shift of Δλ = 54 nm for 3. The emission color of 1 can be reversibly switched between orange-red and green upon regulation of the intermolecular (N-H)imidazole···Nimidazole hydrogen bonds by a grinding-heating process. Moreover, compound 3 can undergo a solid-state [4π + 4π] photodimerization reaction upon irradiation with sunlight, forming 3-dimer. Based on the crystal structures of 1-3, this work discusses the relationship between the molecular stacking mode and the luminescence behavior/photochemical reactivity.
A New 3D Iodoargentate Hybrid: Structure, Optical/Photoelectric Performance and Theoretical Research

Abstract:The explorations of new three-dimensional (3D) microporous metal halides, especially the iodoargentate-based hybrids, and understanding of their structure-activity relationships are still quite essential but full of great challenges. Herein, with the aromatic 4,4′-dpa (4,4′-dpa = 4,4′-dipyridylamine) ligands as the structural directing agents, we solvothermal synthesized and structurally characterized a novel member of microporous iodoargentate family, namely [H2-4,4′-dpa]Ag6I8 (1). Compound 1 possesses a unique and complicated 3D [Ag6I8]n2n− anionic architecture that was built up from the unusual hexameric [Ag6I13] secondary building units (SBUs). Research on optical properties indicated that compound 1 exhibited semiconductor behavior, with an optical band gap of 2.50 eV. Under the alternate irradiation of light, prominent photoelectric switching abilities could be achieved by compound [H2-4,4′-dpa]Ag6I8, whose photocurrent densities (0.37 μA·cm−2 for visible light and 1.23 μA·cm−2 for full-spectrum) compared well with or exceeded those of some high-performance halide counterparts. Further theoretical calculations revealed that the relatively dispersed conduction bands (CBs) structures in compound 1 induced higher electron mobilities, which may be responsible for its good photoelectricity. Presented in this work also comprised the analyses of Hirshfeld surface, powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), thermogravimetric measurement, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDX) along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Abstract:Eight neutral iridium(III) complexes (Ir1–Ir8) containing an electron-withdrawing pentafluorosulfanyl (−SF5) group on cyclometalated ligands with different ancillary ligands were synthesized and investigated. 2-(3/4-(Pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyrimidine (for Ir1 and Ir2), 1-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)isoquinoline (for Ir3 and Ir4), and 2-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyridine (for Ir5–Ir8) were chosen as cyclometalated ligands and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (for Ir1–Ir4), tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (for Ir5 and Ir6), and bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide (for Ir7 and Ir8) were used as ancillary ligands. The crystal structures of Ir1, Ir3, Ir4, Ir6, and Ir8 also confirmed the identities of these complexes. Complexes Ir1, Ir2, and Ir5–Ir8 exhibit sky blue to green emissions (480–533 nm) with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency yields up to 94.7% in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature. Complexes Ir3 and Ir4 are red phosphors (λmax = 607 nm, Φ = 76.8% for Ir3 and λmax = 627 nm, Φ = 49.2% for Ir4, respectively). Theoretical calculations were carried out to provide a further study of the orbital distributions and electronic states of eight Ir(III) complexes. Additionally, ion detection studies reveal that Ir2 has the potential for detecting Hg2+ ion.

Abstract:Three novel silver(l) complexes [Ag2(L)21(NO3)2 (4 [Ag2(L)21(BF4)2 (2) and [Ag2(L)21(CF3CO2)2 (3) have been synthesized by reactions of Schiff base ligand 1-(imidazol-4-yl)-5-(imidazol1-yl)-2-azapent-l-ene (L) with the corresponding metal salts and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex I has one dimensional (ID) chain structure, while complex 2 has two-dimensional (213) network structure, in which two unique ID chains with different shapes are linked together via Ag... Ag interactions. Complex 3 features a discrete M21_2 molecular ring. The results show that the nature of the counterions has remarkable impact on the structure of the supramolecular structures. The photoluminescent properties of the synthesized complexes were studied in the solid state at room temperature. In addition, complex I was further investigated by electrospray mass spectrometry. Abstract:The hydro(solvo)thermal reactions of CuI with diverse bisimidazole molecules were investigated, affording five new copper(I) iodides [Cu4I4(L1)2] (L1=1,3-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene) 1, [CuI(L2)] (L2=4,4′-bis(imidazolyl)biphenyl) 2, [Cu4I4(L3)] (L3=1,3-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)propane) 3, [Cu4I4(L4)2] (L4=1,4-bis(2-ethylimidazol-1-yl)butane) 4, and [Cu4I4(L5)] (L5=1,4-bis(1-imidazoly)benzene) 5. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that (i) in 1, a tetranuclear Cu-I cluster (stepped cubane) is observed, and the L1 molecule only acts as an ancillary ligand; (ii) in 2, the L2 molecules extend the castellated Cu-I chains into a 2-D layer network with a certain thickness; (iii) in 2-D single-layer network of 3, a 1-D Cu-I column is found, which can be viewed as a longitudinal packing of stepped Cu4I4 cubanes; (vi) in 4, the L4 molecules propagate the cubic Cu4I4 cubanes into a 3-D 4-fold interpenetrated network with a cds topology; and (v) in 5, the L5 molecules link the 1-D Cu-I ribbons into a 2-D single-layer network. The photoluminescence analysis indicates that 1, 2 and 4 emit light (red light for 1; yellow light for 2 and 4), while 3 and 5 are not emissive. Their photoluminescence behaviors are confirmed to be related to the Cu···Cu interactions in the molecules.

Abstract:The study about the effect of the stacking mode on the photo/electrical performance of crystalline organic/inorganic hybrids will be beneficial for the design of new photo/electrically active materials. In this work, D–π–A stilbazolium-type chromophores bearing novel ortho-N -alkyl substituents were synthesized and incorporated with iodoargentates to generate three crystalline stilbazolium/iodoargentate hybrids, i.e. , [(CMAMP)(Ag 2 I 3 )] n ( 1 ), [(HMAMP)(Ag 2 I 3 )] n ( 2 ), and [(HMAHP) 2 (Ag 5 I 7 )] n ( 3 ). When the substitutes on the amine group range from –C 2 H 5 CN (for CMAMP + ) to –C 2 H 5 OH (for HMAMP + ), the same (Ag 2 I 3 ) n n − anions will be produced, and the π⋯π stacking interactions among stilbazoliums will be observed from absence to presence (weak head-to-head H-aggregation). Furthermore, when the substituent on the ortho-N of pyridine was also set as –C 2 H 5 OH (for HMAHP + ), more electron-rich (Ag 5 I 7 ) n 2 n − anion can be generated, and strong head-to-tail H-aggregation among HMAHP + cations will happen. The enhanced aggregation strengthening in 3 can lead to its larger blue-shift photoluminescence, higher photocurrent, and better resistive switching performance (much higher ON/OFF ratio of 4.51 × 10 2 ). Their binary resistive switching mechanism can be explained as the SCLC model, and the better photo/electrical performances of 3 stem from its stronger head-to-tail H-aggregations, more negatively charged (Ag 5 I 7 ) n 2 n − anion, and stronger (Ag 5 I 7 ) n 2n − –HMAHP + interaction. The highly delocalized π antibonding orbitals between the empty p-orbitals of ethylene in its LUMO of (HMAHP) 2 2+ dimer of 3 also support this conclusion. The good structure–property correlation based on accurate structural information in these stilbazolium/iodoargentate hybrids will be beneficial for the design of next-generation memory devices.

Abstract:By employing the solvothermal in situ N-alkylation of organic bases with alcohol molecules, four new organically templated iodometallates as [L1][Ag2I4] (L1(2+) = 1,1,4,4-tetramethyl-1 lambda(4),4 lambda(4)-piperazinium) 1, [L2](1.5)[AgI4] (L2(2+) = 1,4-dibenzyl-1 lambda(4),4 lambda(4)-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octanium) 2, [L2]1.5[CuI4] 3 and [L3][CuI3] (L3(2+) = 4,4'-bis(3-methyl-1H-3 lambda(4)-imidazol-1-yl)-1,1'-biphenylium) 4 were obtained. In 1, the in situ substitution and N-alkylation of 1,4-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)piperazine (L1') with CH3OH has occurred, producing L1(2+). Templated by L1(2+), Ag+ and I- aggregate into a chained iodoargentate, which can be described as a linear arrangement of AgI4 tedrahedra by sharing the edges. 2 and 3 are isostructural. In 2 and 3, the in situ N-alkylation of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane (L2') with phenylmethanol has occurred, generating L2(2+). Templated by L2(2+), Ag+ (or Cu+) and I- aggregate into a mononuclear iodometallate with a tetrahedral structure. In 4, the in situ N-alkylation of 4,4'-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-1,1'-biphenyl (L3') with CH3OH has occurred, creating L3(2+). Templating by L3(2+), Cu+ and aggregate into a mononuclear iodocuprate(I) with a planar trigonal structure. The photoluminescence analysis reveals that (i) at the room temperature, only 1 emits light (lambda(em) = 550 nm); (ii) at the low temperature, 4 is found to possess the photoluminescence property (lambda(ern) = 546 nm at 77 K) with a ms-grade lifetime (tau = 4.915 ms).

Their crystal structures indicate that an[Ir(ppy)(2)](+) unit is chelated by a neutral benzoimidazole-based ligand qbiH in 1 center dot NO3, while anion ligand qbi(-) in 2. The different deprotonation degrees of ligands qbiH and qbi(-) in the two complexes lead to their clear differences in luminescence both in solution and in solid state. Complexes 1 center dot NO3 and 2 in CH2Cl2 show the emissions at 581 and 574 nm, respectively. In solid state, a red emission at 611 nm was observed for 1 center dot NO3, while an orange emission at 598 nm for 2. It is interesting that both 1 center dot NO3 and 2 in solid state exhibited luminescence switching between red emission and orange emission, upon meeting Et3N/TFA vapor. This is due to the acid/base-induced structural interconversion between ligand qbiH and ligand qbi(-) in complexes 1 center dot NO3 and 2. Moreover, we discuss the relationship between structure and luminescence for 1 center dot NO3 and 2.

Abstract:A series of novel imidazole derivatives as optoelectronic materials were designed and synthesized. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of solution were investigated. The thermal analysis result indicated that these organic materials have better thermal stability with better PL properties. Due to the molecular structure introduced by imidazole heterocycles. The molecular structure not only changes the optoelectronic properties of the materials, but also enhances the thermal stability of the materials. The approach is helpful for the systematic investigation of structure–property relationship and thus for the design of novel and efficient organic optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:To provide a deeply understanding of the nature of the emissive origin as well as the radiative and nonradiative processes, theoretical studies have been performed on four amidinate/bis(pyridylphenyl) iridium(III) complexes. It has been testified that they have exhibited bright yellowishgreen phosphorescence emission with moderate photoluminescence quantum yields. Besides geometries, electronic structure, absorption and phosphorescence spectra, and the factors governing the radiative decay rate constants of the emissive state have been examined. Additionally, this work also explores the potential energy profiles of the deactivation pathway via the triplet mental-centered states. Among these complexes, complex 2, which contains the bulky t-butyl group on the amidinate nitrogen atoms, presents the highest internal quantum yield. To explore more efficient phosphors, three novel phosphors, 2a, 2b, and 2c have been designed on the basis of complex 2 by incorporation of substituents on the bis(pyridylphenyl) ligand with a slightly higher quantum yield.

Abstract:To explore the new photoluminescent materials, two new salts with imidazole and benzimidazole moieties, namely, [H IBI ] + Z − ( Z = MBS – ( 1 ) and BS – ( 2 ) [ IBI = 2-((1 H -imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-1 H -benzimidazole, MBS = p- methyl phenyl sulfonic acid, BS = benzene-sulfonic acid], were obtained through reacting IBI and phenyl sulfonic acids by slow evaporation method, respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). In both compounds, a set of hydrogen bonds (C/N–H⋯O) can be evidently observed, through which a three-dimensional framework will be fabricated. The luminescent spectra show that the emission maximal peaks in compounds 1 and 2 can be observed to be 460 and 477 nm, respectively. By comparison with the free IBI , the emission maxima of compounds 1 and 2 are obviously red-shifted about 151 and 168 nm, respectively. The Hirshfield surface analysis further confirms that the C∙∙∙C close contacts can account for the photoluminescent spectra.

Abstract:In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid iodoargentates have suffered extensive research attention due to their rich structures and unique optical and semiconductor properties. In this article, using 4,4'-dbbpy (4,4'-dbbpy = 4,4'-dibromo-2,2-bipyridine) and 5,5'-dbbpy (5,5'-dbbpy = 5,5'-dibromo-2,2-bipyridine) ligands as structural modifiers, two new iodoargentate hybrids, namely [Ni(4,4'-dbbpy)3]AgI3 (1) and [Ni(5,5'-dbbpy)3]Ag2I4 (2) have been successfully constructed, which are then structurally, optically and theoretically studied. Compounds 1 and 2 have optical band gaps at 2.45 and 2.56 eV, displaying visible light responding photocurrent intensities of 0.26 and 0.47 mu A center dot cm-2, respectively. Additionally, the Hirshfeld surface analyses and density of states have also been investigated.

Abstract:To develop new luminophores, three imidazobenzothiadiazole (ImBTD) fluorescent dyes (4a, 4b, and 4c) have been successfully synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, the introduction of imidazole groups at the 5-and 6-positions of benzothiadiazole can effectively enhance the fluorescence in both solid and aqueous solution and lead to a fluorescence response to acid. Modification of different aromatic groups at position 4 and 8 of ImBTD can produce tunable mechanochromic luminescence (MCL), which has been studied by theoretical calculations, single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), powder XRD analysis, and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). More importantly, the neutral dyes 4a -c show mitochondrial staining comparable to commercially positively charged dyes. As a novel multifunctional fluorescent dye, it has application value in the fields of solid-state fluorescence and biological imaging.
