Abstract:A new fluorescent chemosensor α-(quinolin-8-yloxy)-acetyl salicyl hydrazone(1) was found to display fluorescence enhancement response selective for Mg2+ over other common alkali and alkaline earth metal ions(Li+,Na+,K+,Ca2+,Sr2+,and Ba2+) in ethanol.In the absence of metal ions,chemosensor 1 exhibited little fluorescence emission.Upon the addition of Mg2+,a 65-fold fluorescence enhancement in the range of 400—500 nm was observed and a 1∶1 metal-ligand complex was formed.The binding constants for chemosensor 1-Mg2+ was 1.7×107(mol·L-1)-1.

Abstract:A new double Schiff base, carbazole, and diaminomaleonitrile-based chemosensor for Fe3+ with high sensitivity and selectivity was designed and synthesized. Addition of only Fe3+ ions induced the fluorescence quenching of the chemosensor in DMF solution. The chemosensor formed a 1:1 complex with Fe3+ with the high binding constant of 7.98·10–6 M–1. The chemosensor displayed low detection limit (3.75·10–8 M) and fast response time (15 s) to Fe3+.

Abstract:Fluorescence sensing is a simple, intuitive, and convenient detection method, but it also has disadvantages, such as poor photothermal stability and detection state limitations. Lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid materials (LHMs) possess exceptional structural stability and tunability and are important candidates for chemosensory materials. LHMs contain versatile chemical reaction building blocks (linkers or ligands), and the different inorganic matrices that can be used provide an opportunity to develop and extend their unique properties.In this review, recent research progress on the use of LHMs for chemical sensing is described. We summarize four general strategies for LHMs synthesis. Moreover, by utilizing these strategies, we prepared an LHMs fluorescent probe that was used to realize the chemical sensing of different types of cations (Fe3+ and Cu2+), molecules (dipicolinic acid (DPA), glutathione, water and ascorbic acid (AA)), and pollutants (organic solvents and amines), as well as pH and temperature sensing. Additionally, the detection status of LHMs can be changed according to the characteristics of the inorganic matrix, such as whether a film or gel is used for detection, thereby overcoming the limitations related to the general detection state.

Abstract:A novel Zn2+-sensitive fluorescent chemosensor SC/SBA-15 has been obtained by the self-assembly of 4-chloroaniline-N-salicylidene (SC), a Schiff base ligand, within the channel of silylation-modified SBA-15 without destroying its hexagonally ordered mesoporous structure. The remarkable 200-fold fluorescence enhancement with a large Stokes shift of 180 nm in luminescence emission upon the addition of Zn-2(+) is attributed to the formation of a coordinate complex of a large rigid conjugate system and Zn-2(+) ions.

Abstract:The synthesis and optical studies of salicylate based azo derivatives (DPSAD and IPSAD) are reported. The receptors act as a versatile fluorogenic chemosensor for Zn2+ causing a selective enhancement of fluorescence over other competing cations. The complex formed between receptors and Zn2+ are identified on the basis of absorption and fluorescence titration and further confirmed by ESI-MS. DFT/TD-DFT calculations support the observed optical changes happens only upon complexation with Zn2+ ion. Moreover, receptors are further applied to intracellular sensing and imaging studies. Abstract:A new Azo-Schiff base ligand (H 2 L) was designed and synthesized as a cation chemosensor. The chemosensor H 2 L as dual chemosensor showed selective fluorescence recognition of Al 3+ with a noticeable fluorescence enhancement and colorimetric detection of Co2 + in aqueous ethanol solution. The H 2 L exhibits a linear response toward Al 3+ ions in the concentration range of 1.91 × 10 –8 M to 4.8 × 10 –6 M with a limit of detection of 1.91 × 10 –8 M. The sensing mechanism of sensor H 2 L toward Al 3+ was investigated by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopies. Fluorescence switch based on the control of EDTA and Al 3+ proved H 2 L could act as a reversible chemosensor. The molecular structure of [NiL] complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:Four salicylidene-based dual responsive chemosensors 1,5-bis(5-bromosalicylaldehyde)carbohydrazone (R1), 1,5-bis(5-bromosalicylaldehyde) thiocarbohydrazone (R2), 1,5-bis(3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde)carbohydrazone (R3) and 1,5-bis(3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde) thiocarbohydrazone (R4) were synthesized and characterized. The molecular structures of R1 and R3 were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique, which crystallized in the orthorhombic Pbcn and monoclinic P21/n space groups, respectively. The chemosensor molecules were investigated for the recognition properties against the selected cations (K+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Fe3+ and Al3+) and anions (F @#x0305; , Cl @#x0305; , Br @#x0305; , I @#x0305; , HSO4 @#x0305; , PO4 @#x0305; , ClO @#x0305; , N3 @#x0305; and NO3 @#x0305; ) by colorimetric, absorption, fluorescence, 1H NMR and theoretical studies. The sensor molecules showed colorimetric responses for Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ and Fe3+ cations and F @#x0305; anion. Interestingly, the Zn2+ and Al3+ cations showed only ̀turn oń fluorometric response, whereas the F @#x0305; anion showed both colorimetric and fluorometric responses. The binding constants were determined using Benesi-Hildebrand (B-H) equation from fluorescence titrations, and found to be higher for R3 towards Al3+ cation (2.03 × 106 M–1) with low limit of detection (1.79 M), and for R4 towards F @#x0305; anion (5.13 × 105 M–1) with low limit of detection (5.23 M). The chemosensors established 1:2 and 1:1 binding stoichiometry with sensed cations and anion, respectively, as confirmed by Jobsʹs plots. The computational studies show lower band gap of HOMO-LUMO when the chemosensors bind with sensed inorganic ions compared to the free chemosensors. Furthermore, the observed fluorescent behaviour of Zn2+ and Al3+ cations have motivated us to investigate the practical applications in live cell-imaging of zebrafish embryos, as well as in the development of molecular logic gate.

Abstract:A water-soluble fluorescence sensor (SA) was facilely synthesized via a one-step condensation reaction between commercially available salicylaldehyde and 2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethanol with high yield. The addition of Zn2+ and Al3+ to SA showed drastic enhancements of the emission intensities at 458 nm and 376 nm, respectively, while exhibiting negligible interference in the presence of typical competitive ions such as Fe3+, Cr3+, Hg2+ and Cd2+. This phenomenon indicates that SA may be helpful for rapid, quantitative and qualitative detection of Zn2+ and Al3+.

Abstract:A new unsymmetric tetradentate salamo-like chemical sensor H2L for fluorescent recognition of Zn2+ has been designed and synthesized. The sensor can recognize Zn2+ from other metal ions examined with selectivity, anti-interference, reliability and high sensitivity (LOD = 1.89 × 10−6 M) in ethanol/H2O solution. The results of UV-Vis and fluorescent spectra analyses, X-ray crystallographic study and DMol3 simulation and calculation (on Materials Studio) indicate that the chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) recognition mechanism of the sensor H2L for Zn2+ is of its hindered PET process. The sensor H2L for Zn2+ has excellent fluorescence characteristics and has potential application value in biological and environmental systems.

Abstract:Two L-lysine-derived salicylidene ligands have been synthesized under ultrasound irradiations and characterized by several spectroscopic techniques. Both ligands exhibited a blue fluorescence emission in ethanolic solutions. (S, E)-3-Amino-7-((2-hydroxybenzylidene) amino) heptanoic acid (A) and (S, E)-3-amino-7-((4-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylidene) amino) heptanoic acid (B) showed a turn-off sensing of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ cations, respectively, over several tested transition metal cations such as Fe 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cr 3+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ and Cu 2+ in aqueous media. The ability of both tested L-lysine-derived ligands (A) and (B) to distinguish Cu 2+ and CO 2+ , respectively, has been verified by optical studies, showing new absorption bands around 304 and 391 nm for (A)-Cu 2+ and a new band around 455 nm for (B)-Co 2+ along with the disappearance of the original bands supporting thereby the noticed Turn–Off results.

Abstract:The selective detection of salicylaldehyde skeleton is of great significance in phytochemistry and biological research but rarely reported. In this research, a simple and highly selective "turn-on" fluorescence sensor (CDB-Am) for salicylaldehyde skeleton was developed based on switch of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE). CDB-Am bearing amino-cyanodistyrene structure responded to salicylaldehyde in the range of 3.1 to 40 μM with a detection limit of 0.94 μM. The sensing process of formation of Schiff-base adduct CDB-SA was confirmed by 1H NMR, MS, and FT-IR spectra, revealing that a recovered AIE property accounted for the turn-on fluorescence response of CDB-Am and the intramolecular hydrogen bonding played a crucial role in the disruption of PET process. This sensing ability was successfully applied for both fluorescence qualitative test of salicylaldehyde skeleton on TLC analysis and quantitative detection of salicylaldehyde skeleton with good accuracy in the root bark of Periploca sepium, suggesting the extensive applications in phytochemistry and traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Furthermore, CDB-Am exhibited the first excellent fluorescence imaging ability in detecting salicylaldehyde skeleton in a living system. This work supplied a new strategy of preparing a novel "turn-on" fluorescence probe for detecting salicylaldehyde skeleton in complex environments and living bodies.

Abstract:The supramolecular approach plays a pivotal role in the construction of smart and functional materials due to the reversible nature of noncovalent interactions. In the present work, two compounds, cholesterol-functionalized calix[4]pyrrole (CCP) and perylene bisimide diacid (PDA), were synthesized. Little fluorescence is observed in the ethanol solution of the mixture of CCP and PDA, while the solution turns fluorescent upon introduction of ammonia, which is attributed to the formation of a supramolecular ensemble, PDA/(CCP)2/NH3. The fluorescence emission of the as-formed ensemble is sensitive to the presence of phenol, an electron-rich analyte. Interestingly, the sensing can also be observed in the film state, and the relevant detection limit (DL) is lower than 1 ppb. Moreover, the sensing could also be performed in a visualized manner. Upon the basis of the findings, a sensor device with instant response and good reversibility was developed. Further studies revealed that the as-developed fluorescent ensemble is also sensitive to the presence of TNT, an electron-poor compound. The DL for this sensing is ∼80 nM. To our knowledge, this is the first report that a fluorescent sensor could be used for phenol sensing in the vapor state, and for sensing of both electron-rich and electron-poor analytes in solution state. It is believed that the present study presents a distinctive example that demonstrates how smart sensing is realized via combination of the host-guest chemistry of calix[4]pyrrole and the aggregation and disaggregation property of PBI derivatives.

Abstract:The chiral Schiff base N-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)methylidene-(S)-α-phenylethylamine (1) was designed and synthesized as a fluorescent chemosensor based on the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and CN isomerization mechanisms. The receptor exhibited a highly selective switch-on fluorescence response toward Zn2+ and especially avoided the interference of Cd2+ when the detection was conducted in unbuffered methanol solution. Furthermore, the in situ generated 1·ZnII-complex could be employed for the specific recognition of H2PO4− by fluorescence turn-off signaling through a ligand displacement process.

Abstract:A series of salicylaldehyde-2-pyridinehydrazone derivatives were found to exhibit interesting “turn-on” fluorescence response toward Zn2+ in water at neutral pH, which could be prepared readily from commercially available materials through a one-step reaction in ethanol at room temperature. Among these compounds, 1 showed a 22-fold fluorescence enhancement in 99% water/DMSO (v/v) at pH 7.0 with a linear range of 0.10–1.00μmol/L and detection limit of 30nmol/L Zn2+. Especially, 1 was not affected by Cd2+ which usually induced a comparable fluorescence response to that of Zn2+ in other reported works. Moreover, live cell imaging showed that 1 could be useful for monitoring Zn2+ within biological samples.

Abstract:We have synthesized a biphenyl-derived two arm-containing amido Schiff base, bis((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl) methylene)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2,2'-dicarbohydrazide (sensor 1), having hard donors to facilitate chelation with hard metal centers. The crystal structure of sensor 1 reveals that it crystallizes in the monoclinic system with the space group I2/a and shows several types of intra/inter-molecular H-bond interactions, which stabilized the crystal lattice. The sensing property of sensor 1 towards different metal ions has been demonstrated using different analytical techniques. In fact, sensor 1 shows high fluorescence selectivity and sensitivity towards Al3+ ions in aqueous DMF media. Importantly, we have reported the first structurally characterized six-coordinate dinuclear Al3+ complex ([Na(Al2L2)·2H2O·4DMF], complex 1 (where ligand, L = sensor 1). Complex 1 crystallizes in the space group P1̄. X-ray single crystal diffraction studies for complex 1 reveal that each Al3+ ion is hexa-coordinated by four oxygen and two nitrogen atoms from each arm of the two ligands. The sodium ion has penta-coordination in a highly distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry, surrounded by two μ-bridging naphtholate oxygen atoms and three solvent DMF oxygen atoms. Upon addition of Na2EDTA to complex 1, no spectral change or naked-eye colour change was observed. Furthermore, "test kits" coated with sensor 1 showed successful selective detection of Al3+ ions under UV light.
