Abstract:The search for a more universal and sensitive hyperspectral diagnostic method for crop monitoring under the different types of heavy metal stress continues to be a focus in the research agenda. This study aimed to explore the potential of visible to near-infrared spectroscopy to detect alone stress and combined stress by Cuprum / Nickel in wheat. Wheat were grown in greenhouse conditions in clean soil spiked with seven treatments Cuprum sulfate, Nickel sulfate and its mixture. The reflectance spectra (400-2500nm) and Cuprum-Nickel concentrations were tested in the laboratory. The spectral angle method was used to determine the degree of spectral variation, and vegetation indices were selected to analyze its sensitivity to Cuprum and Nickel, which all calculated in the bands that were affected by chlorophyll, water and leaf structure. Results show that, more than 77% of the metal treated leaves exhibit significant spectral variation across the full spectral range. Normalized Pigment Chlorophyll Ratio Index (NPCI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) have the best correlation coefficient for Nickel and Cuprum respectively, however generally significant correlations are found between the vegetation index indicating the leaf structure and Nickel / Cuprum.
