Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensing protocol for the detection of TNT prepared from alkanethiols self-assembled on AuNPs modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode with preadsorbed templates of TNT. It demonstrated that the 2D molecular imprinting monolayers (MIMs) can provide a better site accessibility and lower mass-transfer resistance, while the AuNPs can enhance electrode conductivity, facilitate the electron transfer and increase the amount of TNT-imprinted sites. The prepared sensor showed not only high selectivity toward TNT in comparison to other similar nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), but also a wide linear range over TNT concentration from 4.0×10−8 to 3.2×10−6M with a detection limit of 1.3×10−8M (S/N=3). Moreover, the imprinted sensor has been applied to the determination of TNT in spiked environmental water samples and shows promise for fast and sensitive measurement of trace levels of TNT in real samples.

Abstract:Rapid, sensitive, selective and portable detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) is in high demand for public safety and environmental monitoring. In this study, we reported a smartphone-based system using impedance monitoring for TNT detection. The screen-printed electrodes modified with TNT-specific peptides were used as disposable a biosensor to produce impedance responses to TNT. The responses could be monitored by a hand-held device and send out to smartphone through Bluetooth. Then, the smartphone was used to display TNT responses in real time and report concentration finally. In the measurement, the system was demonstrated to detect TNT at concentration as low as 10(-6) M and distinguish TNT versus different chemicals in high specificity. Thus, the smartphone-based biosensing platform provided a convenient and efficient approach to design portable instruments for chemical detections such as TNT recognition.

Abstract:We present a simple and effective fluorescence method for the detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), which is based on TNT recognition by amine-capped silicon quantum dots (SiQDs). The highly luminescent functionalized SiQDs were obtained by a one-step hydrothermal process, using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane as the precursor. The as-prepared SiQDs were directly used as a recognition probe for the detection of TNT because of the strong interactions between the TNT molecule and the SiQDs with an amine group. The formation of Meisenheimer complexes (TNT-amine complexes) could quench the fluorescence of SiQDs by fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Such fluorescence response could be used to quantify TNT over the range of 5-500 nM with a detection limit down to 1 nM, and has been successfully applied for the assay of TNT in spiked tap water. The probe exhibited excellent selectivity. This method has great potential for applications in TNT detection.

Abstract:A label-free optical biosensor was constructed with biofunctionalized graphene oxide (GO) for specific detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). By chemically binding TNT-specific peptides with GO, the biosensor gained unique optoelectronic properties and high biological sensitivity, with transducing bimolecular bonding into optical signals. Through UV absorption detection, increasing absorbance responses could be observed in presence of TNT at different concentrations, as low as 4.40×10(-9) mM, and showed dose-dependence and stable behavior. Specific responses of the biosensor were verified with the corporation of 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNT), which had similar molecular structure to TNT. Thus, with high sensitivity and selectivity, the biosensor provided a convenient approach for detection of explosives as miniaturizing and integrating devices.

Abstract:Carbon dots have been a promising nano-carbon material with many advantages, and attracted many more attentions. This study designed a new chemosensor integrating the strong fluorescent property of carbon dots and the magnetism of amino-functionalized magnetic core-shell nanomaterial, Fe@SiO2-NH2 for determination of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). In this system, fluorescent carbon dots interacted with amino groups on the surface of amino-functionalized magnetic core-shell nanomaterial leading to fluorescence quenching of carbon dots, appearance of TNT competitively replaced of carbon dots on the surface of the magnetic material through forming a Meisenheimer complex. This sensor exhibits excellent selectivity and sensitivity for TNT, and which provided a good dynamic linear range for TNT from 10 to 2000 ng mL-1. The experiments demonstrate a low detection limit of 2.15 ng mL-1. The intra-day precisions for 25, 100 and 500 ng mL-1 were 4.6, 2.3 and 0.5% (RSD, n = 6), inter-day precisions for 25, 100 and 500 ng mL-1 were 4.2, 2.5 and 0.9% (RSD, n = 6), respectively. The developed sensor was validated with river water, dust, and soil samples, and the achieved spiked recoveries were immensely satisfied from 98.1% to 102.0%. The Fe@SiO2-NH2 possessed excellent reusability. This sensor exhibits that it is simple, sensitive and selective, and will be a vital analytical tool for TNT in many fields.

Abstract:Reports on using complementary colours for high-contrast ratiometric assays are limited to date. In this work, graphitized carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets and mercaptoethylamine (MEA) capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs were fabricated by liquid exfoliation of bulk g-C 3 N 4 , and by a coprecipitation and postmodification strategies, respectively. Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots were deposited onto g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets through an electrostatic self-assembly to form new nanocomposites (denoted as Mn–ZnS QDs@g-C 3 N 4 ). Mn–ZnS QDs@g-C 3 N 4 can emit a pair of complementary colour light, namely, orange room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) at 582 nm and blue fluorescence at 450 nm. After 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) dosing into Mn–ZnS QDs@g-C 3 N 4 aqueous solution, and pairing with MEA to generate TNT anions capable of quenching the emission of Mn-doped ZnS QDs, the fluorescence colours of the solution changed from orange to blue across white, exhibiting unusual high-contrast fluorescence images. The developed ratiometric chemosensor showed very good linearity in the range of 0–12 μM TNT with a limit of detection of 0.56 μM and an RSD of 6.4 % (n = 5). Also, the ratiometric probe had an excellent selectivity for TNT over other nitroaromatic compounds, which was applied in the ratiometric test paper to image TNT in water, and TNT sensing under phosphorescence mode to efficiently avoid background interference. A high-contrast dual-emission platform for selective ratiometric detection of TNT was therefore established.

Abstract:In this study, a nanobiosensor for detecting explosives was developed, in which the peptide was synthesized with trinitrotoluene (TNT)-specific sequence and immobilized on nanodevice by Au–S covalent linkage, and the nanocup arrays were fabricated by nanoimprint and deposited with Au nanoparticles to generate localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The device was used to monitor slight change from specific binding of 2,4,6-TNT to the peptide. With high refractive index sensing of ~10 4 nm/RIU, the nanocup device can detect the binding of TNT at concentration as low as 3.12 × 10 −7 mg mL −1 by optical transmission spectrum modulated by LSPR. The nanosensor is also able to distinguish TNT from analogs of 2,4-dinitrotoluene and 3-nitrotoluene in the mixture with great selectivity. The peptide-based nanosensor provides novel approaches to design versatile biosensor assays by LSPR for chemical molecules.
Flowerlike Co-Mofs Catalyzed Chemiluminescence for Sensitive Detection of Tetrachlorophenquinone in Environmental Waters

Abstract:Tetrachlorobenzoquinone (TCBQ) as one of the most toxic quinones has potential risk of causing canceration, and the monitoring of TCBQ in the environment is of significant importance. In this study, a flowerlike Co-PTA-400(Ar) metal organic frameworks (MOF) catalyzed TCBQ-H2O2 chemiluminescence (CL) system was established for sensitive determination of trace TCBQ in environmental waters. The reaction between TCBQ and H2O2 can result in weak CL emission, and the CL signal was enhanced about 10-fold using flowerlike Co-PTA-400(Ar) as catalyst. The luminescence mechanism was investigated through kinetic studies and free radical scavenging experiments. The strong CL emission of TCBQ mainly relied on the generation of abundant center dot OH by the catalysis of Co-PTA-400(Ar). This strategy allows to develop a highly sensitive method for the determination of TCBQ in the linear range of 1 similar to 50 mu M, with a detection limit of 0.56 mu M (3 sigma). The proposed method was applied for analysis of three spiked water samples with recoveries ranging from 95.7% to 100.5%. This method offering the advantages of rapid analysis, low costs, and high sensitivity, is appealing for detection of TCBQ in environmental waters

Abstract:Conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles were prepared by Sonogashira coupling reaction involving a two-step procedure. The resulting conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles are highly fluorescent, and the fluorescent response of the nanoparticles of different size towards electron-deficient trinitrotoluene (TNT) was studied by examining how the steady state fluorescence intensity changes with the concentration of TNT. The conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles show high sensitivity toward TNT, with a detection limit down to 1μM.

Abstract:Rayleigh scattering (RS) as an interference factor to detection sensitivity in ordinary fluorescence spectrometry is always avoided in spite of considerable efforts toward the development of RS-based resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) and hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) techniques. Here, combining advantages of quantum dots (QDs) including chemical modification of functional groups and the installation of recognition receptors at their surfaces with those of phosphorescence such as the avoidance of autofluorescence and scattering light, t-cys-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs have been synthesized and used for room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) to sense and for RS chemodosimetty to image ultratrace 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in water. The t-cys-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs interdots aggregate with TNT species induced by the formation of Meisenheimer complexes (MHCs) through acid-base pairing interaction between t-cys and TNT, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction between t-cys intermolecules. Although the resultant MHCs may quench the fluorescence at 430 nm, interdots aggregation can greatly influence the light scattering property of the aqueous QDs system, and therefore, dominant RS enhancement at defect-related emission wavelength was observed under the excitation of violet light of Mn-doped ZnS QDs, which was applied in chemodosimetry to image TNT in water. Meanwhile, Mn-doped ZnS QDs also exhibited a highly selective response to the quenching of the T-4(1)-(6)A(1) transition emission (RIP) and showed a very good linearity in the range of 0.0025-0.45 mu M TNT with detection limit down to 0.8 nM and RSD of 2.3% (n = 5). The proposed methods are well-suited for detecting the ultratrace TNT and distinguishing different nitro compounds.

Abstract:A method is presented to acquire the absorption cross sections of dopants in photorefractive lithium niobate crystals utilizing doubly doped samples. The absorption cross section of one dopant must be well known. By illumination with ultraviolet light, electrons are transferred from one centre to the other. From the changes of the absorption spectra, the absorption cross section of the centre under investigation is deduced. For a wavelength of λ = 577 nm the absorption cross section of Mn3+ is determined by this method to be σMn3+,577 nmo = (9.2 ± 1.3) × 10−19 cm2 for ordinarily polarized light. The described method can be adapted to other dopants and host materials.

Abstract:Amine group–containing isoreticular metal–organic framework (IRMOF-3) particles are utilized for the first time as a trinitrotoluene (TNT) sensing material. IRMOF-3 particles are synthesized using zinc nitrate as a metal precursor and 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid as a linker. The nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) are synthesized from citric acid and ethylenediamine as carbon and nitrogen precursor, respectively. The NCQDs are conjugated with IRMOF-3 particles as IRMOF-3/NCQDs. The TEM micrograph revealed the average size of IRMOF-3 particles to be 363.66 nm. The photoluminescence emission intensity of IRMOF-3 particles at λem 430 nm is highly increased in the presence of NCQDs (λex 330 nm). Both the as-synthesized IRMOF-3 and IRMOF-3/NCQD particles are explored for TNT detection to compare the effect of NCQDs on the IRMOF-3 particle surface. Lower limit of detection (7.5 × 10−8 M) and higher Stern–Volmer constant (4.46 × 106 M−1) are achieved by IRMOF-3/NCQD particles. The association constant also increased from 5.3 × 104 to 2.78 × 106 M−1 after the conjugation of IRMOF-3 particles with NCQDs. Moreover, enhanced selectivity for TNT over trinitrophenol is achieved using the IRMOF-3/NCQD particles.

Abstract:AgInS2 (AIS) quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized via a thermal decomposition reaction with dodecylamine as the ligand to help stabilize the QDs. This reaction procedure is relatively easy to implement, scalable to large batches (up to hundreds of milligrams of QDs are produced), and a convenient method for the synthesis of chalcogenide QDs. Metal powders of AgNO3 and In(NO3)3, were used as the metal precursors while diethyldithiocarbamate was used as the sulfur source. The AIS QDs were characterized via transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. As an application for these less toxic nanomaterials, we demonstrate the selective detection of Trinitrotoluene (TNT) at concentrations as low as 6 micromolar (μM) and without the functionalization of a ligand that is specifically designed to interact with TNT molecules. We also demonstrate a simple approach to patterning the AIS QDs onto filter paper, for the detection of TNT molecules by eye. Collectively, the ease of the synthesis of the less toxic AIS QDs, and the ability to detect TNT molecules by eye suggest an attractive route to highly sensitive and portable substrates for environmental monitoring, chemical warfare agent detection, and other applications.

Abstract:The regional distribution of ventilation (Vr), perfusion (Qr) (expressed in absolute values) and the regional distribution of ventilated lung volume, of ventilation and of perfusion (expressed as %) were studied using Xenon 133 in 13 subjects with a unilateral pleural effusion of proven or presumed tuberculous origin. The examinations were performed in a sitting position. The initial examination was carried out after as complete an evacuation as possible of the fluid effusion. Eight subjects underwent a follow-up examination after two months treatment with tuberculostatic agents combined with daily respiratory physiotherapy. The initial results emphasized the following points: - in absolute values, a deficit in ventilation on the involved side affecting the 3 regions explored without any similar change in perfusion ; a hyperventilation on the controlateral upper and middle regions ; - in relative values, a slight deficit in ventilated volume and perfusion localised at the base, whilst the deficit in ventilation was more marked and more extensive. After treatment the contribution to ventilation of the involved side increased on average by 6%. However this improvement only concerned the lower territory. The mechanisms of impairment of regional function and its improvement under the influence of treatment are discussed.

Abstract:In this work, ammonia cross-linked 8-armed polyethylene glycol hydrogel material was successfully synthesized and used as a template for synthesizing nanoparticles with fluorescent properties. The 8-armed polyethylene glycol hydrogel template was used to prepare molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs). The ammonium tetrathiomolybdate functioned as a molybdenum source and hydrazine hydrate functioned as a reducing agent. The fluorescence properties of the as-prepared MoS2 QDs were investigated. The bursting of fluorescence caused by adding different concentrations of explosive TNT was studied. The study indicated that the synthesized MoS2 QDs can be used for trace TNT detection with a detection limit of 6 nmol/L and a detection range of 16–700 nmol/L. Furthermore, it indicated that the fluorescence-bursting mechanism is static bursting.

Abstract:The development of a portable and easy-to-use device for the detection of explosives with high sensitivity and selectivity is in high demand for homeland security and public safety. In this study, we demonstrate miniaturized devices depending on the upconversion ratiometric luminescent probe for point-of-care (POC) assay of explosives with the naked-eye. When the PEI-coated upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) selectively bonded to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) explosives by the formation of Meisenheimer complex, the formed of UCNP-Meisenheimer complexes show turned visible multicolor upconversion luminescence (UCL) on account of TNT-modulating Förster resonance energy transfer process under near-infrared excitation. With UCL emission at 808 nm as internal standard and ratiometric UCL at 477 nm to that at 808 nm (I477/I808) as output signal, the probe can simultaneously meet the accuracy for TNT explosives quantitative analysis. In addition, this easy-to-use visual technique provides a powerful tool for convenient POC assay of rapid explosives identification.

Abstract:There is great interest in detection of the level of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) explosive due to its importance in public security and environmental protection fields. The conventional chemical sensors do not simultaneously realize simple, rapid, sensitive, selective, and direct detection of TNT in different medium without sample pretreatment. Here we present a modified wood-based chemical sensor for visual colorimetric detection of TNT in water, air, and soil. The natural wood undergoes a delignified process, which is further functionalized by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). When TNT solutions are introduced, the wood-based sensor shows a colorimetric transition from light yellow to brown for naked-eye readout because of the generation of Meisenheimer complex between APTES and TNT. The photographs are collected by smartphone camera, and the RGB components are extracted to calculate the adjusted intensity for qualitative detection of TNT. This visual colorimetric sensor for TNT solution displays a linearity in the range of 0.01–5 mM with a limit of detection of 3 μM. Abstract:The sensing of explosives such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) directly at an explosion site requires a fast, simple and sensitive detection method, to which electrochemical techniques are well suited. Herein, we report an electrochemical sensor material for TNT based on an ammonium hydroxide (NH 4 OH) sensitized zinc-1,4–benzenedicarboxylate Zn(BDC) metal organic framework (MOF) mixed with carbon black on a glassy carbon electrode. In the solvent modulation mechanism, by merely changing the concentration of NH 4 OH during synthesis, two Zn(BDC) MOFs with novel morphologies were fabricated via a hydrothermal approach. The as-prepared MOFs were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution field emission electron microscopy (FESEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The different morphologies of the MOFs, and their impact on the performance of the modified electrodes towards the electrochemical detection of TNT was investigated. Under optimum conditions, 0.7–Zn(BDC) demonstrated the best electrochemical response for TNT detection using square wave voltammetry (SWV) with a linear calibration response in the range of 0.3–1.0 μM, a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.042 μM, a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.14 μM and a high rate of repeatability. Atomic-scale simulations based on density functional theory authenticated the efficient sensing properties of Zn(BDC) MOF towards TNT. Furthermore, the promising response of the sensors in real sample matrices (tap water and wastewater) was demonstrated, opening new avenues towards the real-time detection of TNT in real environmental samples.
