Abstract:The development of textile-based flexible wearable electronics has received increased attention owing to its potential application in personalized thermotherapy, human health monitoring, and human-interactive sensing. Cotton yarn is an inexpensive, extensively used material suitable for the above applications. However, the use of commercial cotton yarn presents issues regarding electrical insulation and tensile properties. Functionalizing pristine cotton yarn and simultaneously improving its electrical conductivity and mechanical properties remains a challenge. In this study, a graphene-cotton yarn with a dual shell interfacial structure was designed by the interface modulation strategy. Cationic waterborne polyurethane was introduced into the functionalization interface and played an interfacial linking molecule role. The inner shell (reduced graphene oxide, rGO) exhibits electrostatic attraction to the modified cotton yarn substrate, while the outer shell (graphene) generates a continuous and effective conductive network. The resultant graphene-cotton yarn exhibits a high electrical conductivity of 5.50 × 10 3 S·m −1 . The conductive yarn exhibits an extraordinary tensile strength of 194.36 ± 19.82 MPa and a toughness of 32.66 ± 1.13 MJ m −3 , which are 2.1 and 3.6 times higher than that of pristine cotton yarn, respectively. Additionally, we have demonstrated the capabilities of the designed graphene-cotton yarn in prototype textile-based applications, such as personalized thermotherapy, human health monitoring, and braille identification. This research expands the prospects of electronic textiles in the field of flexible wearable applications.

Abstract:Functional textiles are ideal substrates for wearable electronics. Herein, superhydrophobic, flame-retardant and conductive cotton fabrics were fabricated by sequential assembly of poly(ethylenimine), ammonium polyphosphate and carbon nanotubes, followed by post-treatment with poly(dimethylsiloxane). The resulting fabrics possessed excellent superhydrophobic stability toward acid, alkali, organic solvent, UV irradiation, abrasion and long-time laundering. Meanwhile, when suffering to fire, the coated fabric could generate an efficient char layer and extinguish the fire to protect the cotton fiber from forming flame. Furthermore, this conductive cotton fabric exhibited stable sensing ability in contact with water droplets, showing wide potential application in wearable electronics as multifunctional smart textiles.

Abstract:Next-generation smart textiles are regarded as the most straightforward and effective solution to address the growing threats from environment including excessive electromagnetic radiation and global warming. Incorporation of novel materials using advanced fabrication technology has been the reliable technology in developing these smart textiles. Herein, a novel fabrication strategy integrating multi-layer spraying and mechanical compression is proposed to fabricate a liquid metal (LM) and carbon nanotubes (CNT)-decorated multifunctional cotton fabric (CF/LM/CNT). The results demonstrate that the double face-sprayed CF/LM/CNT possess electrical resistance of 0.07 Ω, which is primarily responsible for its unprecedented electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of about 85 dB over the X-band. Moreover, the CF/LM/CNT exhibits excellent heat dissipation and thermal insulation behavior, which is an essential prerequisite for effective thermal management. More importantly, the as-prepared CF/LM/CNT is recycled and reconfigured. This fundamental research work provides a facile and scalable approach to fabricate multifunctional textile materials.

Abstract:Electronic textiles are critical for wearable electronics and real-time health care monitoring. The use of cellulose fibers with conductive components to construct optimized materials for enhanced performance remains an ongoing mission. We report the use of continuous dip-coating of hydrogel fibers to fabricate conductive cellulose yarns (CCYs). Uniform, interwelded and compact silver nanowire (AgNW) networks are embedded on the surfaces of the cellulose yarns, after which a PEDOT:PSS passivation layer is applied to ensure the reliability and practicality of the CCYs. This unique AgNW network provids high electrical conductivity of the CCYs, high strain sensitivities and good Joule heating. Wearable fabric devices embroidered with CCYs exhibit superior performance in strain sensing and electrothermal insulation. This CCY realizes the organic combination of manufacturing, practicability and functionality in sustainable E-textiles. The CCY has the potential to enable scalable manufacturing of low-cost wearable sensors integrated into everyday clothes.

Abstract:Highly conductive and mechanically strong microfibers are attractive in energy storage, thermal management, and wearable electronics. Here, a highly conductive and strong carbon nanotube/nanofibrillated cellulose (CNT-NFC) composite microfiber is developed via a fast and scalable 3D-printing method. CNTs are successfully dispersed in an aqueous solution using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidated NFCs, resulting in a mixture solution with an obvious shear-thinning property. Both NFC and CNT fibers inside the all-fiber-based microfibers are well aligned, which helps to improve the interaction and percolation between these two building blocks, leading to a combination of high mechanical strength (247 +/- 5 MPa) and electrical conductivity (216.7 +/- 10 S cm(-1)). Molecular modeling is applied to offer further insights into the role of CNT-NFC fiber alignment for the excellent mechanical strength. The combination of high electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and the fast yet scalable 3D-printing technology positions the CNT-NFC composite microfiber as a promising candidate for wearable electronic devices.
Bio-based epoxy resin/carbon nanotube coatings applied on cotton fabrics for smart wearable systems

Abstract:Electroactive coatings for smart wearable textiles based on a furan bio-epoxy monomer (BOMF) crosslinked with isophorone diamine (IPD) and additivated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are reported herein. The effect of BOMF/IPD molar ratio on the curing reaction, as well as on the properties of the crosslinked resins was first assessed, and it was found that 1.5:1 BOMF/IPD molar ratio provided higher heat of reaction, glass transition temperature, and mechanical performance. The resin was then modified with CNT to prepare electrically conductive nanocomposite films, which exhibited conductivity values increased by eight orders of magnitude upon addition of 5 phr of CNTs. The epoxy/CNT nanocomposites were finally applied as coatings onto a cotton fabric to develop electrically conductive, hydrophobic and breathable textiles. Notably, the integration of CNTs imparted efficient and reversible electrothermal behavior to the cotton fabric, showcasing its potential application in smart and comfortable wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:<p>Load conductive component onto textiles via coating method is a simple and facile fabrication process to prepare flexible smart wearable device. However, this functional textile will suffer a significant damage after washing or mechanical wear, which hindered its application. In this study, polydopamine (PDA) was used as an interfacial agent to enhance the combination between carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and cotton fiber to fabricated a highly conductive fabric. Furthermore, a hydrophobic material 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTES) was introduced to the conductive fabric via dip-coating process, which effectively fixed the CNTs and simultaneously realize the water resistance of the composite fabric, as the contact angle for the fabric was up to 138<sup>o</sup>. Owning to the formation of a stable conductive path, the composite conductive fabric always possessed a surface resistance lower than 110 Ω/sq. Even after going through the repeated mechanical deformation or multiple stripping cycles, this conductive pathway of the composite fabric was still well maintained. Benefit from the excellent stability and high electrical conductivity, this fabric shows an attractive electromagnetic (EMI) shielding performance, as its EMI shielding effectiveness was 22 dB under 6.57-9.99 GHz and 23 dB under 11.9-18 GHz. Furthermore, the fabric exhibited an outstanding electric heating performance with the heating temperature reaches more than 85 °C at 6 V. Along with the facile preparation technique and stable functional performance, we expect that this hydrophobic conductive cotton fabric can be used as wearable electronics and for the design of various smart flexible devices.</p>

Abstract:Conductive textiles with good flexibility and durability are highly demanded for wearable electronics. However, the common approaches of making conductive textiles require multi-step solvent processes, which is tedious and environment unfriendly. Herein, the high-quality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), synthesized by the floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition method, were directed and dry coated on the melt-blown fabrics (MBFs) recycled from the waste masks with binder-free chemical. The obtained MBF/SWCNT composites displayed excellent conductivity and flexibility and thus can be further used as wearable and heatable textiles. The sheet resistance of MBF/SWCNT composites can be further reduced by gold chloride (AuCl3) doping from 57 to 26 O/sq. The electrical-thermal measurement showed that the pristine MBF/SWCNT composites can reach the surface temperature of similar to 48 degrees C at a low voltage (5 V), whereas it increased to similar to 110 degrees C after AuCl3 doping at the same voltage. In addition, the AuCl3-doped MBF/SWCNT film with a thickness of similar to 150 mu m displays a high electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of 27.1 dB at the X-band. Also, the MBF/SWCNT composites displayed good stability after long-term heating, bending, and washing. Our multi-functional MBF/SWCNT textiles not only demonstrated the reusability of waste masks but also showed great potential applications in electromagnetic interference and heat management, such as thermotherapy pads and fast water evaporators.

Abstract:Although textiles decorated with electroactive materials have gained significant development in the field of wearable electronics and portable devices, the main issue is how to better exploit the synergy between conductive media for multi-scenario applications. Herein, we constructed a conductive network of 1D CNTs and 2D gallic acid-modified MXene (MG) alternating assembly of ‘wire-surface’ structure on the cotton fabric surface for wearable multifunctional personal protection. The introduction of gallic acid extended the lateral dimensions of MXene nanosheets, and the presence of CNTs protected MXene from oxidation and improved the binding of nanosheets to cotton fabric, contributing to an enhancement of the conductivity of the assembled fabric. Meanwhile, the conductivity of the assembled fabric remains stable after cyclic bending (1000 cycles) and nature storage (60 days). The assembled fabric could achieve more than 35 dB of electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (X-band) and outstanding infrared thermal camouflage performance. Moreover, low-radiation, Joule and solar heating are integrated to respond to the heating needs of complex scenarios and to achieve efficient utilization of energy. Based on its simple and scalable fabrication process, along with durability and comfort, the assembled cotton is expected to be promising candidates for multifunctional personal protective fabric.

Abstract:This study investigates the fabrication and characterization of conductive threads using graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), focusing on their application in wearable electronics and smart textiles. We employed the drop casting method to coat cotton threads with a polar solvent-based dispersion of graphene and SWCNTs, aiming to enhance their electrical conductivity and hydrophobic properties. Our results demonstrate that the electrical conductivity of these conductive threads significantly increases with the concentration of graphene and SWCNTs, reaching a peak conductivity of 68.75 S. cm −1 in threads coated with a SWCNT layer followed by a graphene layer . These threads exhibit metallic behavior across a broad temperature range (room temperature to 130 °C) and maintain electrical stability over an extended period. Additionally, varying degrees of hydrophobicity were observed among the different thread compositions. A washability study revealed that threads with a bilayer of SWCNT and graphene maintained higher electrical conductivity after multiple wash cycles compared to those fabricated with a mixed layer of these materials. This research not only highlights the potential of graphene and SWCNTs in developing advanced conductive threads but also addresses the challenges in scalability and reproducibility, paving the way for future innovations in smart textile applications.

Abstract:Cracking of conductive coatings is a primary cause of the poor durability of conductive fabrics. To address this, an Ag/MXene colloidal solution was prepared, which was stable owing to the evenly dispersed Ag particles on the MXene sheet structure. A cotton fabric sample was then coated with Ag/MXene using a dipping method, which resulted in excellent electrical conductivity. Finally, the Ag/MXene conductive coating on the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-covered fabric significantly improved the conductive durability of the fabric. The finished cotton fabric exhibited excellent conductive properties, with a surface resistance of 13.9 ± 0.3 Ω/sq. In addition, the finished cotton fabric exhibited excellent mechanical durability against bending, folding, and strain. Therefore, finished cotton fabrics with excellent electrical conductivity and durability have great potential for application in wearable textiles and flexible sensors.

Abstract:There is an increasing insistence on smart, flexible devices that can be worn, based on carbon materials, nanomaterials and new polymers, as there are machines that mimic human movements, such as soft robotics, human interface machines and flexible sensing uses. In the present article, the development of textile threads of cotton, coated with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) polystyrene sulphonate (PEDOT:PSS) by dip-coating method is presented. Dip-coating is a simple, inexpensive and upgradable process. SWCNTs and PEDOT:PSS were coated on the cotton threads to fill the gaps within the hierarchical structure of the threads. Non-polar organic solvent dimethyl sulphoxide was used as a reducing agent, which increased the density of the SWCNTs and PEDOT:PSS moieties on the filament. This increased the electrical conductivity. Due to this combination, electrical paths increased, decreasing the electrical resistance. The formation of a fine film of conductive materials on the threads was observed by scanning electron microscopy, while Fourier infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were used for structural analysis. Fabrics, being planar materials, enable easy measurement of surface resistivity to understand their electrical behaviour and related performance. Hence, a four-line probe method was used to study the conducting stability of the treated cotton sutures. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the temperature at which the treated thread had its maximum rate of weight loss increased by about 20°C with respect to the original thread. Moreover, as an alternative to a metal wire, the treated thread has an advantage of being light in weight and has high conductivity.

Abstract:Conductive fiber plays increasingly important role in the field of multifunctional textile and smart clothing for the signal/power transmission, electrothermal function and so on. However, their major bottle necks are rigid, undyeable and limited durability. In this study, we manufactured a dyeable, washable and flexible conductive yarn by wrapping cotton roving fiber (wrapped fiber) on the surface of Carbon Nanotube (CNT) fiber (core yarn) and twisting them together by core-spun yarn spinning technique, named as cotton wrapped CNT yarn (CWC yarn). The appearance and flexibility of the CWC yarn are similar with the cotton yarn, but showing excellent conductivities of 100 Ω/cm, (undyed CWC yarn) and 50 Ω/cm (dyed CWC yarn). The electrothermal temperature of the CWC yarn with length of 5 cm reached 70 °C with applied voltage of 20 V, which was even higher than that of the pristine CNT yarn (60 °C). Furthermore, its electrical and electrothermal property changed slightly after being loaded, bent, knotted, fold-released (100 cycles) and washed, showing excellent durability. In addition, the electrochromatically dyed CWC yarn after weaving or embroidering into fabrics displayed changed colors with the various applied voltages. This work demonstrated a simple and referential method to design dyeable and washable multifunctional yarns for wearable applications.

Abstract:Conductive cotton fabrics are widely used in electromagnetic shields and soft sensors because of their excellent softness and comfort. Generally, conductive cotton fabrics are prepared by depositing an inorganic conductive coating or an organic conductive polymer coating on them. However, due to the complex structure of cotton fabrics, these conductive coatings easily fall off and fracture under external forces, resulting in a sharp decline in the conductive properties of the finished fabrics. In the present work, L-cysteine was used as a binder to immobilize Ag NPs on cotton fabric. Ag NPs were covered by PEDOT:PSS to prevent them from falling off and cracking. As a result, the surface resistance of finished fabric was arrived at 8.7 Ω/sq. The finished fabric also exhibited excellent electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, with an electromagnetic shielding reached at 27.1 dB. Moreover, the composite coating significantly improved the durability of electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding properties of the finished fabric. In addition, mist polymerization was used to retain the inherent properties of the cotton fabric. We believe that the proposed method provides a new direction for the preparation of conductive cotton fabrics with a high stability.

Abstract:Metallized textiles have shown promising applications in the fields of electrical conductivity, Joule heating and electromagnetic shielding. Poor durability, especially washability, has hindered the commercialization process of these functional textiles due to the significant mechanical mismatch between rigid metal parts and textiles. This work constructed ultra-durable conductive cotton fabrics by growing copper nanoparticles with amorphous region-controlled swelling and multivalent bonding forces to complex the metal particles. The enlarged fiber amorphous zone and phenol-amine molecules are used as templates to provide further possibilities for the internal and external enrichment growth of copper nanoparticles, providing good conductivity and high durability of the processed cotton fabric. The created fabric exhibits excellent electrical conductivity (6.09 ± 0.36 × 10 −3 Ω/sq), electrothermal conversion (60 s, 1 V, ~ 140 °C) and electromagnetic shielding efficiency (65.32 dB, 8.2–12.4 GHz). Notably, the electrical conductivity of the fabric remains essentially unchanged (Rs/R 0 = 1.106) after 100 standard washing tests. This is attributed to the increase in metal particle loading and the enhancement of metal-fiber bonding fastness. Therefore, this work might provide a novel insight for constructing ultra-washable conductive clothing textiles with heating and EMI shielding performance.

Our multi-functional MBF/SWCNTs textiles not only demonstrated the reusability of waste masks but also showed great potential applications in EMI and heat management, such as thermotherapy pads and fast water evaporators.
Preparation and Characterization of Conductive Cotton Fabric Impregnated with Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-conductive cotton fabric was prepared by a simple infusion method. The SWCNTs became strongly attached to the cotton fibers due to the surface functional groups forming a network on the cotton surface. As a result, the fabric exhibited enhanced electrical conductivity with a low value of sheet resistance (0.006 Ω). Moreover, the conductive cotton fabric displayed a reversible stable state transition at approximately 75°C, where the resistance of the fabric transitioned from metal to semiconductor behavior.

Abstract:Various types of colorful threads have been modified into conductive by wrapping with Cu‐Ag nanonets without losing their original features. The conductive threads show excellent mechanical stability, dry‐wash durability and sewability. E‐textile devices such as fabric heater, touch screen gloves, temperature sensing cloth, and warm fabrics are fabricated for smart‐fabric applications. Electronic textiles have been regarded as the basic building blocks for constructing a new generation of wearable electronics. However, the electronization of textiles often changes their original properties such as color, softness, glossiness, or flexibility. Here a rapid room‐temperature fabrication method toward conductive colorful threads and fabrics with Ag‐coated Cu (Cu‐Ag) nanonets is demonstrated. Cu–Ag core–shell nanowires are produced through a one‐pot synthesis followed by electroless deposition. According to the balance of draining and entraining forces, a fast dip‐withdraw process in a volatile solution is developed to tightly wrap Cu–Ag nanonets onto the fibers of thread. The modified threads are not only conductive, but they also retain their original features with enhanced mechanical stability and dry‐wash durability. Furthermore, various e‐textile devices are fabricated such as a fabric heater, touch screen gloves, a wearable real‐time temperature sensor, and warm fabrics against infrared thermal dissipation. These high quality and colorful conductive textiles will provide powerful materials for promoting next‐generation applications in wearable electronics.

Abstract:Herein, a superhydrophobic and highly conductive cotton fabric (CF) composite with outstanding corrosion resistance for wearable textile electronics is developed. The fabrication process of the fabric composite involves spraying deposition and electrodeposition. Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) are first synthesized on cotton fibers surface via two components spraying, forming cotton fibers core/AgNPs shell structure. The CF/AgNPs composite is then covered with a layer of cerium myristate (CeM) by electrodeposition, which endows the composite with superhydrophobicity and outstanding corrosion resistance. The resistivity of CF/AgNPs/CeM composite could reach as low as 0.106 Ω mm. Moreover, the obtained CF/AgNPs/CeM composite exhibits excellent self-cleaning property and superhydrophobicity with a contact angle (CA) of 158.4°. Also, it maintains superhydrophobicity (CA > 150°) after 60 cm abrasion test or immersion in strong acidic/alkaline solution (pH = 1 or 13) for 24 h. In addition, the corrosion current density of conductive fabric composite (CFC) after electrodeposition decreases to 4.79% of the original value in simulated sweat corrosive media, suggesting a significant improvement of anti-corrosion. The developed superhydrophobic CFC with excellent corrosion resistance and self-cleaning performance has promising applications for wearable electronics in harsh conditions.

Abstract:This article presents the findings concerning the preparation and properties of cotton woven fabrics with a conductive network made of multiwall carbon nanotubes deposited on the fiber surface by the padding method. The next stage of treatment consisted of imparting superhydrophobic properties to the fabrics in solution with methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) in a waterless medium. The tests performed show that the state of surface and water content in cotton fibers exerts a significant influence on the hydrophobic properties of the analyzed samples. In order to explain the differences in hydrophobic properties, the morphology of the cotton fabric surface was examined using samples with various water contents. The formation mechanism of MTCS coatings on cotton fabric has been proposed.
