Abstract:The existence of a sensitive, accurate and convenient method to visualize latent fingermarks (LFs) is of great importance for police identification. In this work, a novel heteroleptic cationic Ir(III) complex (DX-5), which exhibits dual emission (lambda(max) = 362 nm, Phi = 0.16 and lambda(max) = 494 nm, Phi = 0.59) and aggregation induced phosphorescent emission (AIPE) characteristics, was designed and synthesized. This complex was used to enhance the visualization of LFs on different surfaces of porous and non-porous substrates. The results illustrate that complex DX-5 can define the details of LFs up to the third level within 5 min, proving to be a candidate material for criminal investigations applications. Abstract:The most commonly found fingermarks at crime scenes are latent and, thus, an efficient method for detecting latent fingermarks is very important. However, traditional developing techniques have drawbacks such as low detection sensitivity, high background interference, complicated operation, and high toxicity. To tackle this challenge, we employed fluorescent NaYF 4 :Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), which can fluoresce visible light when excited by 980 nm human-safe near-infrared light, to stain the latent fingermarks on various substrate surfaces. The UCNPs were successfully used as a novel fluorescent label for the detection of latent fingermarks with high sensitivity, low background, high efficiency, and low toxicity on various substrates including non-infiltrating materials (glass, marble, aluminum alloy sheets, stainless steel sheets, aluminum foils, and plastic cards), semi-infiltrating materials (floor leathers, ceramic tiles, wood floor, and painted wood), and infiltrating materials such as various types of papers. This work shows that UCNPs are a versatile fluorescent label for the facile detection of fingermarks on virtually any material, enabling their practical applications in forensic sciences.

Abstract:Instant visualization of latent fingerprints is developed by using a series of water-soluble terpyridine zinc complexes as aggregation-induced emission probes in pure water, under UV light or ambient sunlight. By simply soaking, or spraying with an aqueous solution of the probe, bright yellow fluorescence images with high contrast and resolution are readily developed on various surfaces including tinfoil, glass, paper, steel, leather, and ceramic tile. Remarkably, latent fingerprints can be visualized within seconds including details of whorl and sweat pores. The color of emission can be tuned from blue to orange by modifying the pincer ligands, allowing direct imaging under sunlight. These inexpensive, water-resistant, and color-tunable probes provide a practical approach for latent fingerprints recording and analysis, security protection, as well as criminal investigation in different scenarios.

Abstract:Fingerprints are the best form of personal identification for criminal investigation purposes. We present a line-scanning Raman imaging system and use it to detect fingerprints composed of β-carotene and fish oil on different substrates. Although the line-scanning Raman system has been used to map the distribution of materials such as polystyrene spheres and minerals within geological samples, this is the first time to our knowledge that the method is used in imaging fingerprints. Two Raman peaks of β-carotene (501.2, 510.3 nm) are detected and the results demonstrate that both peaks can generate excellent images with little difference between them. The system operates at a spectra resolution of about 0.4 nm and can detect β-carotene signals in petroleum ether solution with the limit of detection of 3.4×10(-9) mol/L. The results show that the line-scanning Raman imaging spectroscopy we have built has a high accuracy and can be used in the detection of latent fingerprints in the future.

Abstract:Three heteroleptic Ir(III) complexes (Ir-TPA, Ir-CzPh and Ir-PhCz) with different electron-donating aryl groups on CˆN ligands were synthesized. Their optical properties were systematically investigated by spectroscopic methods and theoretical calculations to elucidate the effects of introducing different electron-donating groups on their triplet excited state properties. All three complexes possess aggregation-induced phosphorescence emission (AIPE) behaviors. Critically, the relationship between the size of organic ligands and AIPE behaviors for these complexes has been characterized. Their significant AIPE properties predicted that they could be used as efficient latent fingerprint (LFP) developers. Rapid (within 10 s) incubation in Ir(III) complex solution produced high-resolution, naked-eye visible and mobile-photographable LFP images, which could provide fast, reproducible and identifiable analyses of level 3 details for LFPs accurately. In addition, complex Ir-PhCz shows the best imaging of the LFP due to its green light emission and high quantum yield (24.5 %) in solid state. This rapid and practical LFP visualization methodology based on AIPE developers could provide a reliable solution for LFPs detection and investigations in actual scenarios.

Abstract:Creation of AIEgens with high brightness is compactly related to acquiring optimum AIE capabilities and still faces challenges. This study proposes an ingenious structurally regulative approach for preparing ultrabright AIEgens, taking iridium complexes as the model. The incremental rotational activity of substituents obtained by fine adjustment of the stereoscopic configuration efficaciously activates the AIE of iridium complexes and synchronously imparts high-brightness luminescence. Subsequently, benefitting from the ultrabright AIE, high-resolution visualization of latent fingerprints (LFPs) is achieved on diverse substrates by transient immersion in a solution of the AIE-active iridium complex (Ir3) for 60 s. The LFPs stained by Ir3 are integral and distinct enough to possess level 1–3 detail features, which allow precisely realizing personal identification. The LFP photograph emerges inconspicuous attenuation of contrast when aged under ambient light for 10 days and then being continuously irradiated with high-power ultraviolet light for 1 h, reflecting extraordinary aging resistance. Notably, the ultrabright AIE of Ir3 with room-temperature phosphorescence feature successfully achieves enhanced visualization of local fingerprint details with ultrahigh contrast. This LFP visualization protocol based on the ultrabright AIEgens is practical and provides a reliable solution for forensic investigations in actual scenarios.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient latent fingerprints technology (LFPs) on different background remains extremely vital for forensic and criminal investigations. In this work, a pure organic molecular sensor (DPTPA1) was designed to image LFP with strong signal-to-noise ratio by optimizing the imaging technology. DPTPA1 exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties in both aqueous solution and solid state. Two pyridine moieties and one aldehyde moiety were introduced as the end-capped units. DPTPA1 exhibits the typical solvatochromic effect whose maximum emission wavelengths red-shift from 410 nm to 540 nm with the increasing polarity of solvents. The obvious emission of DPTPA1 in the aqueous solution is observed around 500 nm ( φ = 9.6%). Both cyanoacrylate glue fuming (CGF) and powder dusting (PD) methods were used to obtain the fluorescent images of LFP on glass, tinfoil, steel and plastic substrates. Among them, the CGF method can image the clear second level details of LFP on the glass and tinfoil. The PD method using DPTPA1-loaded silica gel material can obtain the high quality LFP images on the curved surface of all four substrates. This work provides a strategy for lowing the cost in the broad fields of LFPs imaging.

Abstract:Among the emitters in powder dusting to visualize the latent fingerprints (LFPs), aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) are well employed for their high brightness and resistance to photo-bleaching. However, the serious background interference and low resolution still limit their fast development. Therefore, to further enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in LFPs imaging, especially to improve the analysis for level 3 details, donor-acceptor (D-A) typed AIEgens of DTPA-2,3-P, DTPA-2,5-P and DTPA-2,6-P are designed here. It is observed that strong emission covering from 450 nm to 650 nm can be obtained for all these molecules, especially that a high PLQY value of 10.06% in solids is achieved in DTPA-2,3-P. This is much higher than that of the other two cases (0.80% and 0.51%). By utilizing the DTPA-2,3-P in powder dusting, fluorescence imaging of LFPs can be clearly captured on both smooth and rough substrates. Moreover, confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) enables us to achieve high-resolution LFPs imaging in both 2D and 3D views, providing more detailed information of fingerprints pores in width, distance, distribution, and shapes. The results here demonstrate that highly emissive AIEgen of DTPA-2,3-P could be an excellent candidate for the visualization of fingerprints, thus providing the potential application in criminal investigation in the future.

Abstract:Herein, a novel AIE‐active fluorophore (NI‐DB) with electron donor‐π bridge‐electron acceptor (D‐π‐A) structure based on the 1,8‐naphthalimide was developed. Significantly, after fingerprints fixed by cyanoacrylate glue fuming, NI‐DB is capable of detecting and imaging latent fingerprints (LFPs) via its intrinsic fluorescence emission. Accordingly, such an AIE‐active fluorophore is expected to be an ideal material that would reach the reliable optical detection and imaging of LFPs. Fingerprints are one of the distinguishing characteristics of an individual, remaining unaltered throughout one's lifetime. It should be noted that fingerprints are significant and reliable evidence in various cases, such as criminal investigations, medical diagnosis, and public security. Thus, it is necessary to develop efficient techniques for fingerprints detection. Fortunately, the fluorescence emission of aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) materials would increase instead of quenching upon excitation when they label fingerprints, which would clearly observe the structure of fingerprints. Herein, we devised a novel AIE‐active fluorophore (NI‐DB) with electron donor‐π bridge‐electron acceptor (D‐π‐A) structure based on the 1,8‐naphthalimide. To our delight, after fingerprints fixed by cyanoacrylate glue fuming, NI‐DB is capable of detecting and imaging fingerprints via its intrinsic fluorescence emission. And, with the aid of this technique, fingerprints on various object surfaces are successfully developed, suggesting the broad applicability.

Abstract:Latent fingerprints (LFPs) is one of the most important physical evidence in the criminal scene, playing an important role in forensic investigations. Therefore, developing highly sensitive and convenient materials for the visualization of LFPs is of great significance. We designed and synthesized an organic fluorescent molecule TP-PH with aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) activity. By simply soaking, blue fluorescent images with high contrast and resolution are readily developed on various surfaces including tinfoil, steel, glass and plastic. Remarkably, LFPs can be visualized within 5 min including the first-, second- and tertiary-level details. In addition, TP-PH exhibits interesting photoactivated fluorescence enhancement properties. Under irradiation of 365 nm UV light with a power density of 382 mW/cm 2 , the fluorescence quantum yield displays approximately 21.5-fold enhancement. Mechanism studies reveals that the photoactivated fluorescence is attributed to the irreversible cyclodehydrogenation reactions under UV irradiation. This work provides a guideline for the design of multifunctional AIEE fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Efficient and accurate visual identification of latent fingerprints is crucial in areas such as criminal investigation and information security. Aggregation-induced luminescence (AIE) fluorescent materials are widely used in this field because of their strong fluorescence and easy functionalization. They have attracted significant interest and emerged as a promising area since the introduction of the AIE concept. Here a new water-soluble fluorescent nanoparticle, flu-p-DITPA, through amphiphilic self-assembly with amphiphilic polymers macro-CTA-mPEG2000 (P1) and exhibits typical AIE properties. The core molecule, indo-DITPA, derived from the triphenylamine backbone, was obtained through rational molecular design and theoretical calculations, and the calculated results were confirmed with experimental results. The photophysical properties of indo-DITPA and flu-p-DITPA have been meticulously studied, revealing their remarkable characteristics. Taking advantage of their favorable photophysical properties, good water solubility, and biocompatibility, the researchers have devised a simple yet effective method for visualizing latent fingerprints (LFPs) with high resolution under UV light. This method enables the easy decoding of latent fingerprint information at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Importantly, this technique is simple, rapid, and user-friendly, marking a significant step forward in the field of forensic science and fingerprint analysis.

Abstract:Nanocarrier-based biological fluorescent probes for ketamine and amphetamine have been prepared by conjugating red and green fluorescent nanoparticles (150-nm-sized) with anti-ketamine and anti-amphetamine antibodies, respectively, with the assistance of carbodiimide/[Formula: see text]-hydroxysuccinimide. Biological fluorescent probes for ketamine and amphetamine could simultaneously detect these two drugs within a single fingermark by one-step test. Nanoparticles as carrier played dual-functional roles for not only fingermark visualization but also drug recognition. Latent fingermarks were visualized by the fluorescence signal generated from nanoparticles. The developed fingermarks clearly revealed ridge pattern and sufficient minutiae for individual identification. Ketamine and amphetamine were recognized by simply observing the colors of fluorescent images when the fingermark was checked in red and green channels. Detection limit of ketamine or amphetamine was 50[Formula: see text]ng in fingermark. This work therefore provides a novel nanocarrier-based strategy of drug detection as well as personal identification with high selectivity, low background interference and fast testing, which can be further broadened to other drugs and molecules.

Abstract:Four heteroleptic cationic Ir(III) complexes [(X)(2)Ir(L2)]+PF6- were designed and synthesized, where L2 = 3,6-di-tert-butyl-9-(4-(4,5-dimethyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazol-1-yl) butyl)-9H-carbazole, X = difluorophenylpyridine (dfppy) (1), dimethylphenylpyridine (dmppy) (2), difluorophenylquinoline (dfpq) (3), dimethylphenylquinoline (dmpq) (4). Their photophysical properties have been systematically investigated via a series of spectroscopic methods. All complexes show fluorescence-phosphorescence dual-emission, aggregation-induced fluorescence emission (AIFE) and aggregation-induced phosphorescence emission (AIPE) in a solvent. Meanwhile, green to red emission colors are exhibited in the solid state. Noticeably, complex 2 shows evident piezochromic and vapochromic behaviors. The emission colors of complex 2 can be reversed from green to yellow upon grinding and CH2Cl2 fuming, which is further demonstrated using solid state and powder X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Additionally, complex 2 is used in data security protection and provides a strategy to design smart luminescent materials.

Abstract:With the increasing interest and demand for multifunctional fluorescence materials, a judicious and facile design is essential but still challenging. Herein, a new multifunctional fluorescence molecule (TCMn) with AIE characteristics was rationally designed and synthesized. TCMn could not only specifically recognize exogenous and endogenous SO2 derivatives (HSO3- /SO32-) in living cells, but also could be used as a fluorescent ink. The TCMn solution as a fluorescence ink exhibited excellent fluorescence stability and resistance to photobleaching. More importantly, TCMn was used for visualizing latent fingerprints on different object surfaces. This work provides a new strategy for molecular design and development of multifunctional fluorescent molecular materials for practical applications.

Abstract:Fingerprints are a unique characteristic of an individual. Recently, it has been realized that fingerprints carry more information about individuals than just their identity, for example, they may identify potential addicts and terrorists carrying explosives. Therefore, the development of imaging moieties capable of both fingerprint staining and drug/explosive visualization is of significant importance for forensic chemistry. Here we developed a nanohybrid comprising green- and red-emitting QDs for simultaneous fingerprint imaging and TNT visualization in fingerprints. The red-emitting Cu-doped ZnCdS (Cu-ZnCdS) QDs were embedded into silica nanoparticles and the green-emitting ZnCdS QDs were anchored onto the surface of the silica nanoparticles and further functionalized with polyallylamine (PAA). Both components of the nanohybrid, i.e., the PAA-functionalized green QDs and red QD-doped silica nanoparticles, could be explored for fingerprint imaging. Due to the formation of a Meisenheimer complex between TNT and PAA, the green-emitting QDs could be quenched by TNT, meanwhile the red-emitting QDs were inert. Therefore, the nanohybrid exhibited a traffic light-type fluorescence color change (green-yellow-red) to TNT concentration in the range of 40-400 μM. This method is promising for potential applications in security-screening needs in public areas such as airports and train stations.

Herein, dual-mode (upconversion and downconversion) lanthanide-doped luminescent nanoarchitectures were developed using Y2O3:Er3+,Yb3+ nanoparticles as a core and layered lanthanide hydroxides nanomaterials as a shell. Under the irradiation of 980 nm near-infrared light, the nanoarchitectures emitted a bright upconverted red light emission. Meanwhile, under the irradiation of 254 nm UV light, the nanoarchitectures can directly emit multicolor luminescence (from green to yellow-green, yellow, orange, and red) by changing the suitable ratios of Tb3+/Eu3+ ions. The information can only be extracted when the irradiation of two kinds of excitation light sources existed at the same time, which can improve the difficulty of illegal imitation and enhance the level of anti-counterfeiting. Furthermore, these luminescent nanoarchitectures were investigated for visual latent fingerprint recognition on various substrates with high definition, high sensitivity, and high anti-interference. These results indicated that the nanoarchitectures reported in this study may have great application prospects in information security and identity recognition.
