Abstract:A green bioreduction method was used to prepare highly efficient supported TiO2 photocatalysts with bimetallic (Au-Ag) nanoparticles at room temperature using Cinnamomum camphora leaf extract as both the protective agent and reducing agent. The resulted Au-Ag/TiO2 exhibits high photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of organic dyes. It was demonstrated that after some of the biomolecules were removed through ionic-liquid extraction and/or calcinations, the Au-Ag/TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits significantly enhanced catalytic performance toward the degradation of methyl orange compared to the pristine untreated catalyst. As a result, 300 mL of 20 mg/mL methyl orange can be fully degraded in 30 min. These can be explained by the sufficient biomolecules could protect the nanoparticles stay in small size, but excess biomolecules played an unfavorable role in hindering the electron transportation during the catalytic reaction. The low-cost preparation, the high activity, together with the good stability and recyclability make this developed Au-Ag/TiO2 a promising photocatalyst toward the degradation of wastewater.

Abstract:Ag quantum dots (Ag QDs) sensitized TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs)/ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions were fabricated by a three-step method and investigated as photocatalysts. Experimental results showed that the novel material exhibited enhanced optical properties and a high degradation rate (for methyl orange) under UV light (109% compared to bare TiO2 NRAs). The high rate was attributed to an increase in the separation of electrons-holes induced by the introduction of the ZnO NPs and the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag QDs. The degradation mechanism was elucidated based on the band structure. It is suggested that the TiO2/ZnO/Ag nanostructure developed in our work can provide a new platform for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts.
Improved Photocatalytic Activity for Phenol Degradation of Rutile TiO2 on the Addition of CuWO4 and Possible Mechanism

Abstract:Rutile is much less active than anatase and brookite for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution. In this work, we found that addition of a trace amount of CuWO4 greatly accelerated phenol degradation in an aerated aqueous suspension of rutile. The increased rate was not only much higher than those of anatase and brookite, prepared at the same temperature (600 degrees C), but also increased continuously with the sintering temperature of rutile from 150 to 800 degrees C. These observations indicate that the high intrinsic photocatalytic activity of rutile produced at a high sintering temperature can be exploited by using co-catalyst CuWO4. Furthermore, as the amount of CuWO4 added to the suspension increased, the amount of H2O2 produced in the presence of excess phenol increased and then decreased; the trend was similar to that observed for phenol degradation. The observed positive effect of CuWO4 is mainly caused by solid CuWO4 rather than Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution. A (photo) electrochemical measurement showed that interfacial electron transfer occurred from the irradiated rutile to CuWO4. This would improve the charge-separation efficiency, and consequently increase the rates of O-2 reduction and phenol degradation.
Different effects of fluoride and phosphate anions on TiO2 photocatalysis (rutile)

Abstract:Rutile is the thermally most stable form of TiO2, and can be produced at a high temperature, with a large number of photogenerated charge carriers on the oxide surface potentially available to reactants. However, rutile is seldom studied as a photocatalyst for organic oxidation, due to its poor ability for O2 sorption and reduction in aqueous solution. Herein the effects of NaF and NaH2PO4 on rutile photocatalysis have been examined. For phenol degradation in aqueous solution, these anions were detrimental, with the trend contrary to those reported with anatase, brookite, and P25 (a mixture of anatase and rutile). After rutile was deposited with 0.5% Pt, however, these anions were beneficial, with the trend similar to those observed for a Pt-deposited anatase and P25. At the same amounts on Pt/rutile, interestingly, fluoride was approximately 3 times more active than phosphate, as observed for Pt/anatase. At a surface coverage higher than 90%, however, the positive effect of phosphate became smaller as its adsorption was increased. An independent measurement with a rutile film electrode showed that both fluoride and phosphate inhibited the adsorption and reduction of O2, while they promoted the hole oxidation of phenol. A plausible mechanism is proposed, involving the fluoride-induced enhancement of bridged oxygen/hydroxyl radical formation and the hole oxidation of phosphate into the anion radicals.
Synergetic Effect of Pt and Borate on the TiO2-Photocatalyzed Degradation of Phenol in Water

Abstract:It has been reported that Pt and borate can promote the TiO2-photocatalyzed degradation of phenol in an aerated aqueous suspension, respectively. Herein, we report a synergism between Pt and borate greatly improving the photocatalytic activity of anatase TiO2. The rate of phenol degradation was dependent on Pt loading, borate concentration, and solution pH. A maximum rate of phenol degradation was observed at 0.52 wt % Pt, 3.0 mM Na2B4O7, and initial pH 9.0, respectively. Under such conditions, the rates of phenol degradation, upon the addition of Pt, borate, and Pt plus borate, were increased by 1.34, 0.22, and 4.87 times, respectively. This mutual action of Pt and borate were also observed from the photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorphenol, and 2,4-dichlrophenol. A separate experiment with the TiO2 and Pt/TiO2 film electrodes showed that borate could mediate the hole oxidation of phenol, but not water. Furthermore, the electrochemical reduction of O-2 over TiO2 and Pt/TiO2, upon addition of borate, became inhibited and promoted, respectively. It is proposed that there a special interaction between Pt and borate facilitating the reduction of O-2. These cooperative effects between Pt and borate would improve the charge separation of TiO2 and consequently accelerate the photocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:TiO(2) nanoparticles compounded with different amounts of bismuth were prepared by a sol-gel method, and the effects of compounding bismuth on the phase transformation, photoinduced charge separation and photocatalytic activity for degrading rhodamine B solution were mainly investigated, along with enhancement mechanism of photocatalytic activity of TiO(2) nanoparticles by compounding bismuth species. It can be confirmed that, by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), compounding bismuth can extend the optical response, and effectively inhibit the phase transformation process from anatase to rutile, consequently greatly improving the anatase crystallinity so as to promote the photoinduced charge separation. These factors are responsible for the increase in the photocatalytic activity of TiO(2) compounded with an appropriate amount of bismuth species.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Cl-Residual Rutile Tio2 Nanorods after Targeted Co-Modification with Phosphoric and Boric Acids

Abstract:The promotion of O-2 adsorption on semiconductor surfaces for effectively capturing photogenerated electrons in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants is highly desired. In this study, the targeted co-modification of residual chlorine rutile TiO2 nanorods with phosphoric and boric acids has been accomplished for the first time by simple wet chemical processes. The key to targeted co-modification is to connect -P-OH and -B-OH to the Cl-residual TiO2 surfaces by -Ti-OH and -Ti-Cl, respectively, consequently forming -Ti-O-P-OH and -Ti-Cl: B-OH ends. By means of the atmosphere-controlled surface photovoltage spectroscopy, the degrees for capturing photogenerated electrons by the adsorbed O-2 as receptors on the resulting TiO2 nanorods are quantitatively analyzed. It is confirmed that the targeted co-modification could greatly promote the capture of the photogenerated electrons compared to the phosphate and borate modification alone. This is attributed to increased amounts of adsorbed O-2 based on electrochemical O-2 reduction and O-2 temperature-programmed desorption measurements, further leading to the enhanced separation of photogenerated charges, characterized by an increase in the amount of produced hydroxyl radicals. This is responsible for the obviously enhanced photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanorods towards the degradation of colorless gas-phase acetaldehyde and liquid-phase phenol. This work would provide us a feasible route for the co-modification with inorganic acids to synthesize efficient nanosized TiO2-based photocatalysts.
Explaining the High Photocatalytic Activity of a Mixed Phase TiO2: A Combined Effect of O2 and Crystallinity

Abstract:The synergistic effect between anatase and rutile TiO2 particles for organic photodegradation in an aerated aqueous suspension has been widely reported, ascribed to the charge transfer between two oxides increasing the efficiency of charge separation for the surface reaction. In this work, we have found different explanation. Four anatase and rutile samples, pretreated at different temperatures, were used as a starting material, and the biphase oxide was prepared by mixing them at various ratios in an alcoholic aqueous solvent, followed by sintering at 450 degrees C. For phenol photodegradation under air, the synergistic effect was observed with one set of the mixed oxides but not with others. When the reaction was carried out under N-2 in the presence of AgNO3, no synergistic effect was observed with any mixed oxide. For methylene blue photodegradation under air, the synergistic effect was also observed as reported, but such an effect was absent when dye adsorption on the oxide was taken into account. The difference in activity among differently prepared samples correlates well with the combined effect of oxide crystallinity and its sorption capacity toward O-2. We propose that the observed synergistic effect is due to O-2 transfer from anatase phase to rutile that explores the masked photoactivity of rutile particles.

Abstract:The photocatalytic oxidation of the organic pollutants with the TiO2 as photocatalyst has been widely studied in the world, and many achievements have been got. The degradation of pollutants is highly related with the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. It is demonstrated that doping ions or oxides to TiO2 is one way to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. In this paper, the ZnFe2O4-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared from butyl titanate by a sol-gel method and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that when TiO2 was doped with ZnFe2O4, its particle size will decrease and its crystal structure will partly transform from anatase to rutile. The photocatalytic activity of the elaborated powders was studied following the degradation of Rhodamine B. The results showed that doping ZnFe2O4 to TiO2 will enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 and that ZnFe2O4-doped TiO2 in the coexistence of anatase and rutile has higher efficiency for the degradation of Rhodamine B than that in the anatase phase alone. Also the different role of O2 in the direct photolysis and photocatalysis of Rhodamine B was discussed.

Abstract:TiO2 has been regarded as an efficient benchmark photocatalyst that can work under ultraviolet light. However, further modification of TiO2 for achieving even higher photocatalytic activities is necessary for practical applications and for enriching the family of TiO2-based photocatalysts. Herein, a novel Ag-SrTiO3/TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared by hydrothermally treating TiO2 nanosheets in an aqueous Sr(OH)(2) solution (to form SrTiO3 nanocubes supported on TiO2 nanosheets) followed by depositing Ag nanoparticles via photoreduction in the presence of an aqueous AgNO3 solution. In this case, Ag nanoparticles were found to be deposited on both SrTiO3 and TiO2 surfaces. The resulting Ag-SrTiO3/TiO2 was found to be more active than reference catalysts such as TiO2, SrTiO3/TiO2, Ag/TiO2, and Ag/SrTiO3 in photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP) under simulated sun light. Relevant catalysts were characterized systematically, and possible reasons for the enhanced activity of Ag-SrTiO3/TiO2 was explained.

Abstract:A kind of phosphorus-doped TiO2 (P-TiO2) is fabricated by boric acid-induced hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate in ethanol solution of triphenylphosphine, then calcination and removal of boron oxide resulted from boric acid. Under the irradiation of blue light-emitting diode (LED), P-TiO2 can successfully realize the oxidative coupling of benzylamine (conversion >95%, selectivity >99%) with air as an oxidant. The photocatalyst exhibits excellent recycling stability and broad applicability for various benzylamine derivatives. Besides, the photodegradation of phenol can also be conducted smoothly with the photocatalyst under the irradiation of Xenon lamp. Control experiments demonstrate that boric acid-induced hydrolysis and calcination temperature determine the size-distribution and surface area of TiO2 nanoparticles, which further impact the photocatalytic performance. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the orthophosphate species covalently bonding to the titania surface facilitates the adsorption of oxygen molecule on the surface of P-TiO2 by forming P–O bond.

Abstract:Ag nanoparticle-decorated Bi2O3-TiO2 heterogeneous photocatalysts were successfully obtained by combining facile sacrificial templates and photoreduction. The as-synthesized Ag@Bi2O3-TiO2 photocatalysts with a narrow band gap of 2.40 eV exhibited considerable photocatalytic activity to degrade rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), and the removal efficiency reached 100% and 92%, respectively. Ag@Bi2O3-TiO2 photocatalysts also exhibited stable recyclability for the degradation of RhB and TCH. Trapping experiments helped determine the major reactive oxidative species for TCH photodegradation. The desirable photodegradation performance is mainly attributed to improved light absorption, enhanced charge separation, and strong redox capacity of Ag@Bi2O3-TiO2 nanostructures with S-scheme heterojunction. This work provides a facile avenue to construct heterogeneous tubular nanostructures with intensive photoabsorbance and effective photocatalysis to degrade organic contaminants.

Improved Photocatalytic Activity of Tio2 on the Addition of Cuwo4

Abstract:Various methods that aim to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 have been reported in the literature. Herein, we report that addition of CuWO4 into the aqueous suspension of TiO2 can result in significant enhancement in the rate of phenol degradation. As the amount of CuWO4 increased, the rate of phenol degradation increased and then decreased. A maximum rate of phenol degradation observed with 2 wt % CuWO4 was about 2.83 times that in the absence of CuWO4. A similar result was also observed with CuO. However, six consecutive tests showed that CuWO4/TiO2 was much more stable than CuO/TiO2, due to the very high stability of CuWO4 against photocorrosion. The improved activity of TiO2 is not due to CuWO4 and CuO themselves and also does not match their solubility in aqueous solution. Moreover, for the generation of OH radicals, and for the decomposition of H2O2 in aqueous solution, CuWO4/TiO2 was also more active than TiO2. Through a (photo) electrochemical measurement, a possible mechanism is proposed, involving electron transfer from the irradiated TiO2 to CuWO4 that facilitates the charge separation of TiO2 and consequently accelerates reactions at interfaces.
Evaluating Intrinsic Photocatalytic Activities of Anatase and Rutile TiO2 for Organic Degradation in Water

Abstract:Various factors that influence the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 for organic degradation in aerated aqueous solution have been reported. For instance, anatase is considered to be much more active than rutile. However, no attention has been paid to the difference in their sorption capacities toward O-2 in water, which might he critical to the activity determination. In this work, Ag+ has been used as an electron scavenger, for the photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol in the N-2-purged aqueous suspension of TiO2 under UV light. Three different TiO2 samples in the crystal forms of anatase and rutile, containing micro- and mesopores, were prepared, followed by sintering at different temperatures (T-s). The initial rate of 4-chlorophenol photodegradation, per the initial amount of Ag+ adsorbed, increased exponentially with T-s. Such T-s-dependent normalized rates were observed with three differently prepared TiO2 samples, and three curves were almost overlapped. Comparatively, in the aerated aqueous suspension of TiO2, the initial rate of 4-chlorophenol photodegradation, per surface area of the catalyst, first increased and then decreased with the trend similar to those widely reported. Moreover, from the literature data of water photosplitting over TiO2, the initial rate of O-2 evolution, per the initial amount of Ag+ adsorbed, increased exponentially with T-s. Evidence clearly shows that with the same amount of electron scavenger on the catalyst surfaces, anatase and ruffle actually have a similar photocatalytic activity at a given for organic degradation or water oxidation. It is recommended that to evaluate the photocatalytic activities of different TiO2 samples in an aerated aqueous solution, the difference in O-2 adsorption needs to be taken into account.
Improved photocatalytic performance of TiO2/carbon photocatalysts: Role of carbon additive

Abstract:A series of TiO2 - based photocatalysts have been prepared by the incorporation of 10 wt% of various carbon-based nanomaterials as modifying agents to titania. More specifically, commercial TiO2 P25 was modified through a wet impregnation approach with methanol with four different carbon nanostructures: single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO), graphite (GI), and graphitic carbon nitride (gCN). Characterization results (XPS and Raman) anticipate the occurrence of important interfacial phenomena, preferentially for samples TiO2/SWCNT and TiO2/prGO, with a binding energy displacement in the Ti 2p contribution of 1.35 eV and 1.54 eV, respectively. These findings could be associated with an improved electron-hole mobility at the carbon/oxide interface. Importantly, these two samples constitute the most promising photocatalysts for Rhodamine B (RhB) photodegradation, with nearly 100% conversion in less than 2 h. These promising results must be associated with intrinsic physicochemical changes at the formed heterojunction structure and the potential dual-role of the composites able to adsorb and degrade RhB simultaneously. Cyclability tests confirm the improved performance of the composites (e.g., TiO2/SWCNT, 100% degradation in 1 h) due to the combined adsorption/degradation ability, although the regeneration after several cycles is not complete due to partial blocking of the inner cavities in the carbon nanotubes by non-reacted RhB. Under these reaction conditions, Rhodamine-B xanthene dye degrades via the de-ethylation route.
Borate-Mediated Hole Transfer from Irradiated Anatase TiO2 to Phenol in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:The development of a highly active TiO2 photocatalyst for energy and environmental use is a great challenge. In this work, we report that the addition of sodium borate to an aqueous suspension of anatase TiO2 at neutral pH can result in a significant enhancement in the rate of phenol degradation. Similar results were also observed from 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation, spin-trapped OH radical formation, H2O2 decomposition, and chromate reduction in the presence of phenol. This borate-induced rate increase for phenol degradation was determined not only by the amount of borate adsorption but also by the structure of borate species (pH effect). A (photo)electrochemical measurement with the TiO2 film revealed that upon addition of borate, the hole consumption by phenol and the electron consumption by O-2 were accelerated and decelerated, respectively. Moreover, the flat band potential of TiO2 was negatively shifted by 81 mV. Since the hole oxidation of water to O-2 remained unchanged, it is proposed that a borate radical is produced, followed by regeneration through phenol oxidation. This borate-mediated hole transfer would promote the electron transfer to O-2 and consequently improve the efficiency of the charge separation for phenol degradation at interfaces.

Abstract:Silver halide-based photocatalytic materials have been successfully used in organic contaminant degradation and disinfection, but their application in the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes has never been reported. Herein, we fabricated sandwich-structured AgBr@Ag@TiO2 composite photocatalyst by a facile multistep route and for the first time studied its photocatalytic performance for the oxidation of benzyl alcohols to benzaldehydes. It was found that the porous TiO2 shell layer can be successfully anchored on the surface of AgBr core by a kinetics-controlled hydrolysis process and the thickness of TiO2 shell layer can be conveniently tuned by adjusting the addition amount of ammonia water during titanium source hydrolysis. The control experiments indicated that the O-2 plays a vital role in promoting the oxidation of benzyl alcohols while non-aqueous solvents are favorable to improving the reaction selectivity from alcohol to aldehyde. Compared to blank TiO2 and AgBr@Ag, sandwich-structured AgBr@Ag@TiO2 exhibited a drastically enhanced photocatalytic activity in terms of benzyl alcohol oxidation under visible light irradiation. The transient photocurrent and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum analyses confirmed that the core-shell structure can effectively promote the separation of photo-generated electrons and holes. The radical scavenging experiments revealed that superoxide radical (.O-2(-)) and hole (h(+)) are the main reactive species responsible for the transformation from benzyl alcohols to benzaldehydes. Efficient Degradation of Phenol and 4-Nitrophenol by Surface Oxygen Vacancies and Plasmonic Silver Co-Modified Bi2MoO6 Photocatalysts

Abstract:In this work, the surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic Ag, surface oxygen vacancies (SOVs), and Bi2 MoO6 (BMO) material were rationally combined to construct new oxygen-vacancy-rich Ag/Bi2 MoO6 (A/BMO-SOVs) photocatalysts. Their synergistic effect on the photocatalytic degradation of phenol and 4-nitrophenol under visible-light irradiation (λ≥420 nm) was also investigated. TEM, EPR, and Raman spectra demonstrate the co-existence of metallic Ag nanoparticles, surface oxygen vacancies, and Bi2 MoO6 due to a controlled calcination process. The experimental results disclose that the 2 %A/BMO-SOVs-375 sample exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for the degradation of both phenol and 4-nitrophenol under visible-light irradiation, achieving nearly 100 and 80 % removal efficiency, respectively, and demonstrated the apparent reaction rate constants (kapp ) 183 and 26.5 times, respectively, higher than that of pure Bi2 MoO6 . The remarkable photodegradation performance of A/BMO-SOVs for organic substances is attributed to the synergistic effect between the surface oxygen vacancies, metallic Ag nanoparticles, and Bi2 MoO6 , which not only improves the visible-light response ability, but also facilitates charge separation. Thus, this work provides an effective strategy for the design and fabrication of highly efficient photocatalysts through integrating surface oxygen vacancies and the surface plasmon resonance effect of nanoparticles, which has the potential for both water treatment and air purification.
Photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds: accelerating the process efficiency

Abstract:The photocatalytic activites of several TiO2 materials have been compared studying the degradation of an aliphatic and an aromatic model compound under optimized experimental conditions (e.g., c(TiO2), pH of the solution). For dichloroacetic acid (DCA) a new anatase catalyst, i.e., Hombikat UV100, yielded significantly higher photonic efficiencies (ζ=15%) than almost all the other materials, especially in comparison to rutiles. For 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) the discrepancies were relatively small and the degradation was generally slower (ζ<1%); in this case the formation of intermediates has to be considered, too. While for DCA the addition of CuNO3 (1–10mM) or a platinization of the catalyst lead to a significant raise in ζ, this had almost no effect on the degradation of 4-CP. For this model compound ζ could be accelerated strongly by the addition of bromate (3mM KBrO3); the photocatalytic nature of the process could be demonstrated. The addition of other oxidants had no beneficial effect, in some cases an inhibition was observed. The stability and long time activity of standard and platinized TiO2 materials could be demonstrated.
