Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a versatile chemical and a promising carbon-free energy carrier. The selective synthesis of H2O2 from water and oxygen is considered to be a secure and energy-efficient production method, yet the design of ideal electrocatalysts with the desired activity, selectivity and stability remains challenging. Recent progress in the development of highly selective and active carbon-based catalysts is summarized, including the design principles for active catalysts, tailoring active sites on the catalyst surface, and catalyst structure engineering. Fundamental principles of oxygen reduction reaction mechanisms are presented. Novel strategies, including heteroatom doping, surface/interface engineering, and supported single metal atoms, are highlighted. We believe that by appropriately changing the components and engineering the microenvironment of the active sites, the rational design of efficient catalysts with long-term stability can be achieved, bridging the gap between theoretical prediction and experimental observation. Finally, prospects for future research are provided.
Highly Selective Hydrogen Peroxide Electrosynthesis on Carbon: in Situ Interface Engineering with Surfactants

Abstract:In situ modulation of surface reaction is a powerful approach to drive high-yield H2O2 electrosynthesis on metal-free carbon. Here, we discover that cationic surfactants can work efficiently as an in situ kinetic promoter for the oxygen-to-peroxide reaction on a car bon black electrode, achieving a peroxide yield above 90% (up to 95.2%) across a >0.8 V window in alkaline media, the best among reported H2O2 electrocatalysts. Our characterizations and kinetic model analysis show that the high peroxide selectivity is attributable to surface carboxylates (-COO-) with weak peroxide binding under a Coulombic pull imposed by an adsorbed cationic layer. Although surface carbonyls (-C=O) also participate in the peroxide synthesis, they exhibit strong binding to peroxide and promote on-site reduction at moderate-to-high overpotential. At only a minute amount of cationic surfactant, a chronoamperometry experiment with a carbonyl-free system can deliver a peroxide production at a sustainably high selectivity (similar to 96%) over 10h.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a valuable chemical with a wide range of applications, but the current industrial synthesis of H2O2 involves an energy-intensive anthraquinone process. The electrochemical synthesis of H2O2 from oxygen reduction offers an alternative route for on-site applications; the efficiency of this process depends greatly on identifying cost-effective catalysts with high activity and selectivity. Here, we demonstrate a facile and general approach to catalyst development via the surface oxidation of abundant carbon materials to significantly enhance both the activity and selectivity (~90%) for H2O2 production by electrochemical oxygen reduction. We find that both the activity and selectivity are positively correlated with the oxygen content of the catalysts. The density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the carbon atoms adjacent to several oxygen functional groups (–COOH and C–O–C) are the active sites for oxygen reduction reaction via the two-electron pathway, which are further supported by a series of control experiments.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials have been utilized as effective catalysts for hydrogen peroxide electrosynthesis via two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e ORR), however the insufficient selectivity and productivity still hindered the further industrial applications. In this work, we report the Fe-O4 motif activated graphitic carbon material which enabled highly selective H2O2 electrosynthesis operating at high current density with excellent anti-poisoning property. In the bulk production test, the concentration of H2O2 cumulated to 8.6% in 24 h and the corresponding production rate of 33.5 mol gcat-1 h-1 outperformed all previously reported materials. Theoretical model backed by in-situ characterization verified α-C surrounding the Fe-O4 motif as the actual reaction site in terms of thermodynamics and kinetics aspects. The strategy of activating carbon reaction site by metal center via oxo-bridge provides inspiring insights for the rational design of carbon materials for heterogeneous catalysis.

Acetylene black (AB) is processed with O2 plasma and subsequent electrochemical oxidation, resulting in a remarkable selectivity of >96% over a wide potential range, and a record‐setting high yield of >10 mol gcat−1 h−1 with good durability in gas diffusion electrode. Comprehensive characterizations and calculations revealed that the presence of abundant C═O groups at the edge sites positively correlated to and accounted for the excellent 2e‐ORR performance. Abstract:BACKGROUND Surface properties and adsorption performance of carbon materials play a crucial role in the electrochemical two‐electron oxygen reduction to produce H2O2. However, there is still a lack of in‐depth research on commercial carbon blacks in this area. Herein, four typical commercial carbon blacks (Acetylene black (AB), Ketjen black EC 600JD, Vulcan XC 72 and Black Pearls 2000) were used as cathode catalysts to generate H2O2. Surface chemistry and pore structure of electrodes of the four carbon blacks were systematically characterized, and their effects on H2O2 adsorption, electrochemical generation and degradation were investigated. RESULTS Among the four carbon blacks, AB has the highest content of C–O–C/COOH and CO, which are active groups catalyzing the two‐electron oxygen reduction reaction to generate H2O2. AB has the lowest level of defects and highest degree of graphitization, and AB‐modified graphite felt electrode (AB‐Ele) has the largest average pore diameter, smallest specific surface area and smaller charge transfer resistance. H2O2 production using AB‐Ele is the largest and reaches 567.7 mg L−1 at 180 min under a current density of 5 mA cm−2, and only decreases by 17.6% after 10 repeated uses. CONCLUSION Overall, rich oxygen‐containing functional groups such as C–O–C, COOH and CO, high degree of graphitization, suitable surface area and porosity as well as weak H2O2 adsorption performance are beneficial for the two‐electron oxygen reduction reaction to generate H2O2. AB‐modified graphite felt electrode exhibits good catalytic activity and reusability in H2O2 electrosynthesis, demonstrating promising application prospects. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Abstract:The electrocatalytic activity towards two electron oxygen reduction reaction of graphite felt was advanced by incorporating carbon nitride, carbon nanotubes and polytetrafluoroethylene through vacuum filtration, which prevented the cleavage of O-O bond, facilitated the charge transfer, and established more three-phase active sites. To ameliorate the oxygen transfer process, the configuration of side-aeration was proposed, providing forced convection to reduce the thickness of diffusion layer, and increasing the dissolved oxygen. By simplified combination of refining the orientation of gas flow and modified graphite felt, the dual-chamber configuration rendered a qualitative leap in H2O2 generation capacity to 4.44–6.89 mg h−1 cm−2. The alkaline affinity of developed system was discussed in terms of a beneficial outer-sphere electron transfer pathway, the variation on adsorption strength of oxygenated species and working electrode potential range. Finally, Long-term operation stability and successful application in Electro-Fenton indicated great potential of developed system for H2O2 synthesis and environmental remediation.

Abstract:We report the selective introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups for two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e-ORR) in self-supportive carbon electrode using electrochemical oxidation method. The optimal electrode shows hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) selectivity up to 95 %. CO is found active to control 2e-ORR selectivity and mechanism of oxygen species variation is elucidated by in situ infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. We further improve mass transfer by introducing highly interconnected macropores in electrode, which shows H2O2 yield of 144 mmol cm− 2 h−1 and Faradaic efficiency of nearly 100 %. These may inspire advanced active electrode creation for applications through selective electrochemical doping and structural design.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic two-electron oxygen reduction reaction is an effective, safe and green approach to produce hydrogen peroxide, and the "catalyst-design'' for highly efficient hydrogen peroxide production has already been reported on various of works. Specially, the modification of the existing catalysts for two-electron oxygen reduction reaction via surface/interface engineering shares huge potential on further enhancing their corresponding catalytic performance, and a detail overview on the research progress of carbon-based electrocatalysts via surface/interface engineering and their intrinsic reaction mechanism is helpful to realize a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the latest progress in this field and further achieving highly efficient hydrogen peroxide electrosynthesis. Herein, fundamental aspects about the 2e − /4e − pathways of oxygen reduction reaction are first introduced. Subsequently, a comprehensive summarization of the current strategies for carbon-based catalysts modification via surface/interface engineering for high selectivity and yield of hydrogen peroxide production is presented. Finally, the prospects and challenges for the hydrogen peroxide production with high efficiency and yield rate are presented, which should shed light on the industrial production and application of hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) is a green oxidizer widely involved in a vast number of chemical reactions. Electrochemical reduction of oxygen to H2 O2 constitutes an environmentally friendly synthetic route. However, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is kinetically sluggish and undesired water serves as the main product on most electrocatalysts. Therefore, electrocatalysts with high reactivity and selectivity are highly required for H2 O2 electrosynthesis. In this work, a synergistic strategy is proposed for the preparation of H2 O2 electrocatalysts with high ORR reactivity and high H2 O2 selectivity. A Co-Nx -C site and oxygen functional group comodified carbon-based electrocatalyst (named as Co-POC-O) is synthesized. The Co-POC-O electrocatalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance for H2 O2 electrosynthesis in O2 -saturated 0.10 m KOH with a high selectivity over 80% as well as very high reactivity with an ORR potential at 1 mA cm-2 of 0.79 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Further mechanism study identifies that the Co-Nx -C sites and oxygen functional groups contribute to the reactivity and selectivity for H2 O2 electrogeneration, respectively. This work affords not only an emerging strategy to design H2 O2 electrosynthesis catalysts with remarkable performance, but also the principles of rational combination of multiple active sites for green and sustainable synthesis of chemicals through electrochemical processes.
Surface oxidation of commercial activated carbon with enriching carboxyl groups for high-yield electrocatalytic H2O2production

Abstract:Two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e-ORR) for H2O2production is regarded as a more ecologically friendly substitute to the anthraquinone method. However, the search of selective and cheap catalysts is still challenging. Herein, we developed a neutral-selective and efficient nonprecious electrocatalyst that was prepared from a commercial activated carbon (AC) by simply microwave-assisted ash impurity elimination and hydrogen peroxide oxidation for surface functional sites optimization. The oxygen configuration can be tuned with enriching carboxyl group up to 6.65 at.% by the dosage of hydrogen peroxide (mass ratio of H2O2/C = ∼0-8.3). Chemical titration experiments identified the carbonyl groups as the most potential active sites, with selectivity boosted by the additional carboxyl groups. The microwave-assisted moderate-oxidized activated carbon (MW-AC5.0) demonstrated optimal 2e-ORR activity and selectivity in neutral electrolyte (0.1 M K2SO4), with H2O2selectivity reaching ∼75%-97%, a maximum H2O2production rate (1.90 mol·gcatal-1·h-1@0.1 V) and satisfying faradaic efficiency (∼85%) in gas-diffusion-electrode. When coupled with Fenton reaction, it can degrade a model organic pollutant (methylene blue [MB], 50 ppm) to colorless in a short time of 20 min, indicating the potential applications in the environmental remediation.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an efficient oxidant with multiple uses ranging from chemical synthesis to wastewater treatment. The in-situ H2O2 production via a two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) will bring H2O2 beyond its current applications. The development of carbon materials offers the hope for obtaining inexpensive and high-performance alternatives to substitute noble-metal catalysts in order to provide a full and comprehensive picture of the current state of the art treatments and inspire new research in this area. Herein, the most up-to-date findings in theoretical predictions, synthetic methodologies, and experimental investigations of carbon-based catalysts are systematically summarized. Various electrode fabrication and modification methods were also introduced and compared, along with our original research on the air-breathing cathode and three-phase interface theory inside a porous electrode. In addition, our current understanding of the challenges, future directions, and suggestions on the carbon-based catalyst designs and electrode fabrication are highlighted.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic oxygen reduction by a 2e− pathway enables the instantaneous synthesis of H2O2, a process that is far superior to the conventional anthraquinone process. In recent years, the electrocatalytic synthesis of H2O2 using carbon electrodes has attracted more and more attention because of its excellent catalytic performance and superior stability. The relationship between material modification, wettability and the rate of H2O2 synthesis and service life is considered together with the three-phase interface. The structure of the carbon electrodes and the principles of electrocatalytic H2O2 synthesis are first introduced, and four major catalysts are reviewed, namely, monolithic carbon materials, metal-free catalysts, noble metal catalysts and non-precious metal catalysts. The effects of the metal anode and the electrolyte on the three-phase interface are described. The relationship between carbon electrode wettability and the three-phase interface is described, pointing out that modification focusing on improving the selectivity of the 2e− pathway can also impact electrode wettability. In addition, the relationship between the design of the components in the electrochemical system and their effect on the efficiency of H2O2 synthesis is discussed for carbon electrodes. Finally, we present our analysis of the current problems in the electrocatalytic synthesis of H2O2 for carbon electrodes and future research directions.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials are more promising catalysts for H 2 O 2 electrochemical production. However, the common method for modifying carbon-based materials is surface functionalization with harsh and uncontrollable reaction conditions, hindering the precise regulation of the active sites. Herein, we proposed a carbon-based material modified by polydopamine (CB-PDA) that was easily prepared and used in air diffusion electrode system for H 2 O 2 production. The rapid and reversible transformation between catechol and o-benzoquinone on PDA could improve the H 2 O 2 selectivity from 75.5 % to 97.0 % during the electrocatalytic process. The detection of adsorbed *HOOH and *OOH in oxygen reduction reaction proved the preference of CB-PDA for the two-electron pathway. The H 2 O 2 formation rate constant of CB-PDA increased significantly from 25.85 to 60.82 mM h −1 . The highest cumulative H 2 O 2 concentration could reach 10200 mg L −1 in 9 h. Long-term operation tests proved the good operational stability. Furthermore, this system was cost-effective without additional aeration energy consumption and could achieve rapid disinfection in 10 min, which would have great potential to be used in environmental remediation.

Abstract:The production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via the two-electron electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR) is an essential alteration in the current anthraquinone-based method. Herein, a single-atom Co─O4 electrocatalyst is embedded in a defective and porous graphene-like carbon layer (Co─O4@PC). The Co─O4@PC electrocatalyst shows promising potential in H2O2 electrosynthesis via 2e- ORR, providing a high H2O2 selectivity of 98.8% at 0.6 V and a low onset potential of 0.73 V for generating H2O2. In situ surface-sensitive attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectra and density functional theory calculations reveal that the electronic and geometric modification of Co─O4 induced by defective carbon sites result in decreased d-band center of Co atoms, providing the optimum adsorption energies of OOH* intermediate. The H-cell and flow cell assembled using Co─O4@PC as the cathode present long-term stability and high efficiency for H2O2 production. Particularly, a high H2O2 production rate of 0.25 mol g-1 cat h-1 at 0.6 V can be obtained by the flow cell. The in situ-generated H2O2 can promote the degradation of rhodamine B and sterilize Staphylococcus aureus via the Fenton process. This work can pave the way for the efficient production of H2O2 by using Co─O4 single atom electrocatalyst and unveil the electrocatalytic mechanism.

Here we present a cation-regulated interfacial engineering approach to promote the H 2 O 2 selectivity (over 80%) under industrial-relevant generation rates (over 400 mA cm −2 ) in strong acidic media using just carbon black catalyst and a small number of alkali metal cations, representing a 25-fold improvement compared to that without cation additives. Our density functional theory simulation suggests a “shielding effect” of alkali metal cations which squeeze away the catalyst/electrolyte interfacial protons and thus prevent further reduction of generated H 2 O 2 to water. A double-PEM solid electrolyte reactor was further developed to realize a continuous, selective (∼90%) and stable (over 500 hours) generation of H 2 O 2 via implementing this cation effect for practical applications.

Isomerization Engineering of Oxygen‐Enriched Carbon Quantum Dots for Efficient Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Abstract:Structural engineering strategy is employed to synthesize oxygen‐doped carbon quantum dots (o‐CQD). The surface electronic structure of o‐CQDs is modulated by varying isomerization precursors, thereby demonstrating excellent 2e− ORR electrocatalyst performance. The preferred o‐CQD‐3 achieves a H2O2 productivity of 338.7 mmol gcatalyst−1 h−1 in a flow cell, maintaining consistent production stability over a 120‐hours duration—outperforming majority reported electrocatalysts. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has emerged as a kind of multi‐functional green oxidants with extensive industrial utility. Oxidized carbon materials exhibit promises as electrocatalysts in the two‐electron (2e−) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for H2O2 production. However, the precise identification and fabrication of active sites that selectively yield H2O2 present a serious challenge. Herein, a structural engineering strategy is employed to synthesize oxygen‐doped carbon quantum dots (o‐CQD) for the 2e− ORR. The surface electronic structure of the o‐CQDs is systematically modulated by varying isomerization precursors, thereby demonstrating excellent electrocatalyst performance. Notably, o‐CQD‐3 emerges as the most promising candidate, showcasing a remarkable H2O2 selectivity of 96.2% (n = 2.07) at 0.68 V versus RHE, coupled with a low Tafel diagram of 66.95 mV dec−1. In the flow cell configuration, o‐CQD‐3 achieves a H2O2 productivity of 338.7 mmol gcatalyst−1 h−1, maintaining consistent production stability over an impressive 120‐hour duration. Utilizing in situ technology and density functional theory calculations, it is unveil that edge sites of o‐CQD‐3 are facilely functionalized by C‐O‐C groups under alkaline ORR conditions. This isomerization engineering approach advances the forefront of sustainable catalysis and provides a profound insight into the carbon‐based catalyst design for environmental‐friendly chemical synthesis processes.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) electrosynthesis through oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) provides an environmentally-friendly alternative to the traditional anthraquinone process. While most studies focus on the original construction of active sites in electrocatalysts, it is also necessary to optimize the microenvironment in the dynamic catalytic process. Here, we proposed a pulse-induced strategy to achieve the in-situ regulation of active sites and interface microenvironment in ORR process, enabling a 210 % leap in H2O2 yield and a 74 % increase in Faraday efficiency. A series of operando measurements revealed the stabilization effect on the catalyst morphology and oxygen-containing functional groups distribution, and the activation effect on the basal defect sites to strengthen the interaction with *O2 and *OOH. Density functional theory calculations were further employed to reveal a unique ORR reaction pathway which decoupled the proton transfer and electron transfer process in pulsed electrocatalysis, providing new insights into the origin of ORR activity and selectivity.
