Abstract:To extend the lifetime of wall-paintings in the Mogao Grottoes, various kinds of conservation materials (for example, PVA, acrylic acid and B72) and techniques (for example, adhesion, consolidation and surface coating) have been used in the past decades. However, as a basic concern, it still remains obscured how the deterioration mechanism of wall-paintings changes after conservation materials are applied. In this contribution, an assumption was advanced to clarify this mechanism. Different layers in the wall-paintings have different physical properties, such as thermal and moisture expansions, which may be altered after the conservation materials penetrate into the paintings. The differences of these properties may cause stress between the layers in the paintings with the change of environmental factors, which will finally lead to deterioration of wall-paintings. A series of experiments were performed to determine thermal and moisture expansion properties of consolidated wall-painting plasters. The impact of the conservation materials on the expansion properties of wall-painting plasters was quantified, in order to evaluate these materials. Consistency of experimental conclusions and conservation experience validated this hypothetical mechanism.

Abstract:Yungang Grottoes, in Datong City of Shanxi Province, China, as the state-level key cultural relic preservation organ, have been subjected to severe degradation due to natural and human factors over the years. Since January 2010, site investigation and research on Yungang Grottoes, assisted by the Xi’an Relics Protection Center and Yungang Grottoes Cultural Research Institute, have been carried out in the laboratory of cultural relics conservation materials in Zhejiang University. Our investigation of the deterioration characteristics of these grottoes is presented here. The paper describes about 12 types of diseases in detail represented by dust deposit, salt crystallization and black crust. Relevant samples have been collected and analyzed by means of SEM, FT-IR, XRD and EDAX to study the potential hazard to the sandstones and conservation methods, which could be used to help guide remediation efforts directed at reducing the weathering problem.

Abstract:Ancient glass relics are easily weathered by the influence of buried environment, and the internal elements exchange with the environmental elements in large quantities, resulting in changes in their composition ratio. Archaeological research can often detect the component content of glass relics after weathering, but it is difficult to obtain the corresponding component content before weathering. It is necessary to predict the chemical composition of glass relics before weathering in order to accurately identify the type of glass relics and repair them. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a distributed matching strategy, and studies the influence of weathering on the composition content of glass through compositional correlation analysis and linear regression statistical methods, so as to build a prediction model of the composition content of glass relics before weathering. The results show that the composition prediction model of glass cultural relics constructed by the distribution matching strategy has a good prediction ability, which is consistent with the change trend of the composition ratio of linear regression analysis. Moreover, the model is simple and easy to operate, which is convenient for popularization and application, and provides theoretical basis and reference value for further research on the composition and accurate classification of glass cultural relics.
Research on extraction of fragile bamboo slips by underwater temporary solidification in original state

Abstract:The complex preservation conditions make underwater cultural relics, especially organic ones-more frag-ile than terrestrial relics. Bamboo slips, the main carriers of ancient Chinese characters, are often found underwater. They have high cultural and historical values, but their mechanical strength is low, making them difficult to extract. Moreover, if their arrangement is disrupted during the extraction process, the subsequent restoration will be harder. In this study, veratraldehyde, a new underwater temporary solid material, was used to conduct in-situ reinforcement and extraction experiments on organic cultural relics. Based on these experiments, the researchers designed a three-layer wrapped protective frame and pro-posed the recovery method of dissolution and effective residue detection of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The experimental results showed that this method can nearly preserve the original state of frag-ile bamboo slips underwater and extract them out of the water safely. Also, the solidification process is reversible and without residues. It is a safe and reliable underwater technology for solidifying extraction of cultural relics. (c) 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS. Measurement of Reversible Rate of Conservation Materials Based on Gel Cleaning Approach

Abstract:In this work, a new hydrogel designed for water-sensitive artifacts especially for China Dunhuang mural was synthesized to remove the ineffective conservation materials on mural surface. The reversible rate of each conservation material was measured based on hydrogel cleaning. It was found that the gel filled with cleaning agents showed excellent performance over the empty gel. Besides, it was more environment-friendly without mechanical damage to the sensitive surface and easier to control the cleaning process compared with pure organic solvent cleaning. 3D microscopic system confirmed the cleaning effects both visually and quantitatively. The best “conservation material-cleaning agent” pairs and their reversible rates were obtained, which were “ParaloidB72---P-xylene+ethyl acetate---80%”, “polyvinyl acetate---P-xylene+ethyl acetate---40%”, “acrylic---P-xylene---44%”, “silicone---P-xylene+1-Pentanol---55%”. It was also found that the reversible rates of the conservation materials declined after aging.

Abstract:This paper proposes a combined methodology for the quantitative analysis of the correlations between the monitored influencing environmental factors and the water saturation induced deterioration of earthen relics in a humid area. The Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City that have been exposed and severely damaged in a humid environment with high water content and dry–wet cycles are chosen as examples. A monitoring system including atmospheric, groundwater, soil moisture conditions, and images of the surface was installed. Based on the proposed methodology, 11 key influencing indexes involving groundwater, soil moisture and temperature at different depths, atmospheric radiation, and rainfall for the water saturation induced deterioration are investigated, and their correlation is described by a regression model. The weight rankings of influencing factors to the deterioration of the research area are calculated. The results can help quantitatively control the atmospheric environment where the earthen relics are located and can promote the conservation of the archaeological ruins in the humid environment.

Abstract:Paper cultural relics, with the great historic and artistic value, experience aging and degradation during their long-term preservation. The degradation of paper involves various chemical reactions with complicated mechanisms due to the multiple components of paper itself and the complex factors that promote paper aging process. Therefore, it is of great importance to deeply understand the chemical essence and scientific principle of paper degradation, so as to propose the effective conservation methods for paper relics. This review summarized the chemical mechanisms of acidic, alkaline and oxidative degradation of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in paper, and discussed the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that affect paper degradation systematically. Moreover, the interaction among the three types of degradation routes was analyzed for the first time, and the evolution of kinetic models for paper degradation was introduced to evaluate the durability and expected lifetime of paper. On this basis, the advantages and disadvantages of remedial and preventive conservation methods for paper relics are summarized, and the fundamental scientific principles was prospected to guide the further development of paper conservation methods.

Abstract:Semi-exposed relics within an air–soil system often have earthworks partially buried, leading to moisture migration and substantial salt accumulation. Salt accumulation threatens relic preservation, but destructive sampling is hindered by conservation concerns. We conducted a case study on salt enrichment at K9901 Armour Pit of Emperor Qinshihuang 's Mausoleum Site Museum. Environmental factors and soil salt characteristics were assessed through sampling and monitoring. A relic-soil coupling system was established with a soil column device containing burned bricks. Using 5-TE sensors, water and salinity movement was tracked, and X-ray diffraction analyzed relic salt crystals. The soil column experiment effectively simulated water-salt migration in relics. Salts, like Cl − , NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , Na + , and Mg 2+ , concentrated on the soil surface during evaporation. Simulation linked specific salt species to relic ailments. Salt solution from soil migrated to bricks, forming CaSO 4 crystals. Results highlight coupling's role in salt-related deterioration and the need to protect it for optimal relic preservation. Findings impact semi-exposed relic conservation, revealing salt accumulation processes and their impact on historical artifacts.
Monitoring the Deterioration of Masonry Relics at a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Abstract:Since 2015, six typical masonry cultural relics around the China’s UNESCO World Heritage Site — the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou have been systematically monitored from three aspects: deterioration patterns, physical and mechanical properties, and the changes of the micro-environment, using non-destructive testing equipment like optical microscope, ultrasonic pulse wave, Schmidt hammer, surface roughness tester, thermohygrometers, rain gauges, air quality monitors and so on. High-throughput sequencing technology had also been used to study distribution and diversity of microorganisms on the surface of masonry. Results show that the deterioration of relics can be reflected by their physical and mechanical properties, comprehensive evaluation of the heritage’s health state can be made through long-term continuous monitoring. It also found that different deterioration pattern will occur with different types of materials or in different preservation conditions, marble artifacts which completely exposed outdoors tends to significant degradation in just five years due to temperature fluctuations and acid rain. Besides, Microorganisms’ growth and propagation correlate positively with environmental conditions. As a case study, this paper described in detail the whole process of monitoring the deterioration of masonry relics at a UNESCO World Heritage sites, which may provide some references for researchers in similar fields.
Corrosion-crack path based probabilistic model to predict the durability behavior of RC components

Abstract:Taking account to the stochastic and time-dependent behaviors of existing concrete structures in service environment, an improved path probability model (PPM) is established to predict the process of corrosion, crack and load capability degradation of existing reinforced concrete structures with time. The time-dependent probability distribution of reinforcement corrosion ratio, crack width and load capability loss of RC concrete in carbonation, chloride penetration or coupling-effect environment can be simulated effectively by numerical calculation. Therefore it enable the computer simulation of the whole deterioration process of RC element from harmful mediums erosion, corrosion initiation of reinforcement, corrosion induced concrete crack and load capability reduction. Behavioral parameters involve percentage of corroded steel samples, steel corrosion ratio, area percentage of cracked concrete, and crack width and load capability reduction factor. These prediction results are proved reasonable and effective by statistics information from field data of existing concrete structure.

Abstract:This study aims to provide a reference for the protection of the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City. As a basis for the further preservation of these cultural relics, it is essential to analyze the microflora colonizing these soil objects. To do that, samples with microbial characteristics were obtained and analyzed by SEM and metagenomic sequencing to reveal the constitute of the microflora. We investigated the biodegradation of the protective material-epoxy resin by microorganisms in the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, and found that they would interact with each other, which would affect the performance of the epoxy resin. The specific mechanism of action requires further investigations. We evaluated the effect of ethyl orthosilicate on soil properties. Interestingly, we found that excess ethyl orthosilicate added to the soil of the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City will cause a change in particle size and allowed the soil to condense in the laboratory. This indicates that the large use of orthosilicate may lead to intensified soil weathering, which in turn will cause soil erosion.

Abstract:In some extreme corrosion environments, the erosion of chloride ions and carbon dioxide can occur simultaneously, causing deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. This study presents a probabilistic model for the sustainability prediction of the service life of RC structures, taking into account that combined deterioration. Because of the high computational cost, we also present a series of simplifications to improve the model. Meanwhile, a semi-empirical method is also developed for this combined effect. By probabilistic generalization, this simplified method can swiftly handle the original reliability analysis which needs to be based on large amounts of data. A comparison of results obtained by the models with and without the above simplifications supports the significance of these improvements.

Abstract:Artworks, particularly easel paintings, are multi‐component materials intended to last indefinitely. The protective coatings applied to these artworks often consist of amorphous glass‐like polymers, which undergo slow physical aging and structural recovery below their glass transition temperature. This process alters key physical properties such as mechanical strength, optical clarity, and thermal stability over extended periods. This study investigates the time‐dependent evolution of these properties in Laropal A81, a widely used synthetic resin for cultural heritage conservation, particularly as a replacement for ancient varnishes. The investigation involves characterization of enthalpy recovery via differential scanning calorimetry, refractive index evolution via refractometry, and creep compliance evolution via rheological measurements. The aging behavior of Laropal A81 is further analyzed using the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts function and the Tool–Narayanaswamy–Moynihan model, enabling the quantification of critical dynamic parameters such as activation energy, nonlinearity, partition coefficients, and non‐exponentiality. The gained insights into the long‐term behavior of this coating's properties can be valuable for improving preservation and restoration strategies for cultural heritage.

Abstract:Fragile cultural relics at underwater archaeological sites are difficult to preserve in situ over long time periods due to the effects of a complex and constantly changing surrounding environment. Thus, extracting the relics from water and preserving them in a controllable environment is of primary importance. In this paper, the technology of temporary reinforcement and extraction of underwater fragile relics with veratraldehyde followed by a process of secondary temporary reinforcement using polyethylene glycol (PEG) was studied. After investigating the melting temperature and permeability of PEGs with different molecular weights, we found that PEG-3000 is an excellent candidate as the secondary reinforcing agent for the extracted relics. In the laboratory, combined with veratraldehyde and polypropylene-fiber cloth as temporary underwater strengthening materials, and selected dispersed beaded jewelry and a broken three-dimensional crock as our research subject, we carried out an entire retrieval process-temporary stabilization and secondary temporary reinforcement, to systematically evaluate the technological aspects of safely excavating fragile underwater relics in the original state. After being extracted from water and subjected to secondary temporary reinforcement using PEG-3000, the beaded jewelry and broken crock retained their underwater shape and arrangement completely. The use of secondary reinforcing agent prevents the removal process of veratraldehyde and enclosed sediment from affecting the state of the relics.
Multi-Analytical Characterization of Stone Relics from Meili Section of the Ancient Tea Horse Road in Yunnan, China

Abstract:The stone relics in the Meili section of the ancient Tea Horse Road in Yunnan, China, are important for Sino-Tibetan cultural heritage. However, these relics were exposed to the risk of hydraulic erosion due to the construction of a hydroelectric power station, and thus protecting these relics is now imperative. Preliminary investigations and analyses of stone relics are crucial for their subsequent conservation and restoration. Thus, in this study, multi-analytical characterization including the microstructure, mineralogical characteristics, elements, and chemical compositions of the stone relics was conducted using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), polarized light microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). In addition, the contaminants and pigments on the surfaces of the stone relics were identified and analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. OM, SEM and Raman spectroscopy indicated that the surface contaminants mainly comprised of moss and soil dust, and some of the stone relics exhibited porosity and weathering. Polarized light microscopy revealed that the mineralogical morphology of stone samples mainly appeared as allotriomorphic, hypidiomorphic, and colloform structures. ATR-FTIR, and XRD confirmed that the stone relics mainly consisted of quartz, muscovite, illite, and chlorite. In addition, Raman spectroscopic analysis showed that the pigments on the relic surfaces included chalk, barium white, langite, green earth, amorphous carbon black, chrome red, and chrome yellow. The findings of this study may provide scientific support for the conservation of the stone relics.
