Abstract:4D printing is an emerging additive manufacturing technology that combines the precision of 3D printing with the versatility of smart materials. 4D printed objects can change their shape over time with the application of a stimulus (i.e., heat, light, moisture). Light driven smart materials are attractive because light is wireless, remote, and can induce a rapid shape change. Herein, we present a method for fabricating polymeric bilayer actuators via 3D printing which reversibly change their shape upon exposure to light. The photoactive layer consists of a poly(siloxane) containing pendant azobenzene groups. Two different photoactive polymers were synthesized, and the photomechanical effect displayed by the bilayers was evaluated. These bilayers exhibit rapid actuation with full cycles completed within seconds, and photo generated stresses ranging from 1.03 to 1.70 MPa.

Abstract:Bioinspired smart materials with synergistic allochroic luminescence and complex deformation are expected to play an important role in many areas of science and technology. However, it is still challenging to fabricate such soft actuators with high programmability, which can be manipulated in-situ with high spatial resolution. Herein, we have incorporated terminally functionalized aggregation-induced emission active tetraphenylethene derivative and photochromic spiropyran moieties into the networks of liquid crystal elastomers through covalent bonding to obtain the synergistic photochromic luminescence and programmable soft actuators. Bio-mimic functions and auxetic metamaterial-like devices were demonstrated feasible based on the combination of assembly and origami-programming strategy. These bioinspired devices with synergistic photochromic luminescence and complex photodeformation abilities could provide an elegant strategy for designing multi-functional liquid crystal actuators that could find potential applications in biomimetic soft robotics, camouflage devices, metamaterials, and beyond.

Abstract:Photo-responsive mechanical actuator is a class of stimuli-responsive materials transferring light to mechanical energy through macroscopic transformation. To fabricate photo-responsive mechanical actuator, soft polymeric materials crosslinked with functional bridging structures are desired. Supramolecular interaction is a relatively common way to fabricate crosslinked materials due to its excellent self-assembly performance. And azobenzene and derivatives are ideal candidates of photo-responsive materials because of the unique photo-induced trans-cis isomerization. Here, a new kind of crosslinked materials based on supramolecular interaction between 4,4′-dihydroxyazobenzene and chitosan is reported. Under 355 nm irradiation, the macroscopic bending of polymeric materials occurs rapidly due to the photo-isomerization of 4,4′-dihydroxyazobenzene. Meanwhile, the photo-responsive mechanical actuator can also lift weight which is up to 200 times that of the actuator itself, and convert energy from light to mechanical work efficiently. This report suggests a new kind of photo-responsive actuator based on supramolecular interaction and may be helpful to contribute a theoretical basis to the design and synthesis of photo-responsive mechanical actuator suitable for large-scale manufacturing industrialization in future.
A reactive azobenzene liquid-crystalline block copolymer as a promising material for practical application of light-driven soft actuators

Abstract:Cross-linked liquid-crystalline polymers containing azobenzene have been drawing great research interest of scientists due to their significant values in the design of light-driven soft actuators. However, poor processabilities due to the chemical cross-linking severely prevent their practical applications. Here, we designed and synthesized a novel reactive block copolymer PEO-b-PAZO bearing N-hydroxy-succinimide carboxylate substituted azobenzene groups. This copolymer is compatible with the traditional polymer processing methodology including melt and solution processing methods, providing a facile way to prepare the photoresponsive films and fibers, and enabling post-crosslinking after processing through a mild reaction between N-hydroxysuccinimide carboxylate substituents and a difunctional amine. Most importantly, the prepared fibers and films showed reversible photodeformation regulated by alternating irradiation of UV and visible light (365 nm/470 nm). We envision that this novel liquid crystalline polymer will open up new possibilities for low-cost fabrication of high performance photo-driven actuators on a large scale.

Abstract:Azobenzene actuator has attracted wide research attention in the fields of soft robots, artificial muscles, etc., owing to the typical photoresponsive material based on its reversible trans–cis isomerization. However, it remains challenging to enhance the actuation performance of azobenzene actuators through simple methods and can work in complex and variable environments. In contrast to complex molecular functional design, this study presents a Janus azobenzene inverse opal actuator: one side of a monodomain azobenzene polymer and the other side of a polydomain azobenzene inverse opal structure. The proposed design can significantly enhance the photoactuation performance in the liquid phase based on the synergetic effects of the Janus structure and the plastic influence of solvent/thermal/photo responses on the polymer segment. Promising applications of photo-driven ring rolling in the liquid phase are demonstrated. The results of this study are of great significance for the design and fabrication of novel-type azobenzene actuators in the liquid phase.

Abstract:Photoactuators based on liquid crystal elastomers or networks are smart materials that show photoinduced motions. However, their crosslinked networks make their repair or reprocessing difficult. Here, a healable and reprocessable photoactuator is fabricated using entangled high-molecular-weight azobenzene-containing polymers (azopolymers) that are non-crosslinked. A series of linear liquid crystal azopolymers with different molecular weights are synthesized. The low-molecular-weight azopolymers (5-53 kg mol(-1)) cannot form freestanding photoactuators because their polymer chains lack entanglements, which makes them hard and brittle. In contrast, flexible and stretchable actuators are fabricated using high-molecular-weight azopolymers (80-100 kg mol(-1)) that exhibit good processability because of the polymer chain entanglements. The azopolymer photoactuators show photoinduced bending based on photoinduced trans-cis isomerization of the azopolymers on the irradiated side. The experiments show not only photoinduced phase transitions or changes in the order parameters but also photoinduced solid-to-liquid transition of the azopolymers resulting in shape changes and mechanical responses. Thus, photoinduced solid-to-liquid transition is a new mechanism for the design of photoactuators. Moreover, the azopolymer photoactuators are healable and reprocessable via solution processing or light irradiation. Healability and reprocessability prolong lifetimes of photoactuators are important for materials reusage and recycling, and represent a new strategy for the preparation of smart materials.
Fully Room-Temperature Reprogrammable, Reprocessable, and Photomobile Soft Actuators from a High-Molecular-Weight Main-Chain Azobenzene Crystalline Poly(ester-amide)

Abstract:Azobenzene (azo) polymer photoactuators with full room-temperature reprogrammability, reprocessability, and photomobility are highly desirable for large-scale applications, but their development remains a daunting challenge. Herein, a strategy is first presented for fabricating such advanced photoactuators from a high-molecular-weight main-chain azo crystalline poly(ester-amide) (PEA) prepared via Michael addition polymerization. This azo PEA can be readily processed into both physically cross-linked, uniaxially oriented fibers and films with high mechanical robustness and reversible photoinduced bending/unbending at room temperature. Importantly, the presence of both amide unit-induced hydrogen bonding and crystalline domains in such films and fibers endows them with dynamic, yet stable cross-linking points, which enable their easy reprogrammability under strain at room temperature into various three-dimensional (3D) shapes (e.g., film helicoid and spiral ribbon, fiber spring) capable of showing completely different shape-dependent photomobile modes. In particular, these reshaped photoactuators can maintain their accurate 3D shapes and highly reversible photoinduced motions even after being kept at 80 °C for 20 days or at 100 °C for 2 days. They can also be reprocessed and recycled from solution at room temperature. Such a multifunctional main-chain azo crystalline PEA can serve as a versatile platform for fabricating various photoactuators with desired 3D shapes and motion modes under mild ambient conditions.

Abstract:Bilayer photomechanical films are fabricated by depositing one layer of molecular azobenzene chromophores onto flexible low-density polyethylene substrates. The photoinduced bending and unbending behavior of five azobenzene derivatives including azobenzene, 4-hydroxyazobenzene, 4-((4-hydroxyphenyl) diazenyl) bezoitrile, 4-((4-methoxyph-enyl) diazenyl) phenol, and 4-(phenyldiazenyl) phenol is systematically studied by considering the incident light intensity and the thickness of the coated chromophore layers. Precise control of photoinduced curling of the bilayer film is successfully achieved upon irradiation with two beams of UV light, and the curled films can be recovered by thermal relaxation in the dark. The easily fabricated bilayer films show fast photomechanical response, strong photoinduced stress, and stability similar to crosslinked polymeric films.

Abstract:Untethered small actuators have drawn tremendous interest owing to their reversibility, flexibility, and widespread applications in various fields. For polymer actuators, however, it is still challenging to achieve programmable structural changes under different stimuli caused by the intractability and single‐stimulus responses of most polymer materials. Herein, we develop multi‐stimuli‐responsive polymer actuators that can respond to light and solvent via structural changes. The actuators are based on bilayer films of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and azobenzene chromophore (AAZO)‐crosslinked poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDAC). Upon UV light irradiation, the AAZO undergoes trans‐cis‐trans photoisomerization, causing the bending of the bilayer films. When the UV light is off, a shape recovery towards an opposite direction occurs spontaneously. The reversible deformation can be repeated at least 20 cycles. Upon solvent vapor annealing, one of the bilayer films can be selectively swollen, causing the bending of the bilayer films with the directions controlled by the solvent vapors. The effects of different parameters, such as the weight ratios of AAZO and film thicknesses, on the bending angles and curvatures of the polymer films are also analyzed. Abstract:Azobenzene-based photoresponsive polymer film actuators normally bend toward an ultraviolet (UV) source, in which their photosensitive mesogens are stabilized in cross-linking polymer networks. Herein, we synthesize a non-cross-linking liquid-crystalline (LC) polymer film actuator, in which the photoresponsive azobenzene mesogens are aligned in a perpendicular direction to the non-cross-linking polymer chains. Upon exposure to UV light (λ = 365 nm), the trans-to-cis isomerization generates expanding strength along the parallel direction with respect to the polymer main chains, which causes the film actuator to bend away from the light source. After prestretching the film actuator at 120 °C to enhance its perpendicular alignments of the azobenzene mesogens, its photoresponsive performance can be improved. As a result, the film actuator shows flexible and multifarious motions not only in air but also in liquid environments, making it more adaptable to sensing systems, soft robots, and artificial muscles.

Abstract:Development of stimuli-responsive soft matter that undergoes fast and reversible shape changes that mimic living organisms is a grand challenge for materials science. We report here on the molecular design of photoactive bilayer actuators that can rapidly respond to visible light, leading to complex but predictable bio-inspired shape changes. The mechanism of accelerated actuation is rooted in the simultaneous photoexpansion of one layer and photocontraction of the other triggered by the same light stimulus. The opposing response leads to a synergistic effect that results in fast bending actuation, The synergistic bilayers were bridged with light-inactive segments to generate macroscopic constructs capable of undergoing programmable 3D origami-like shape change upon irradiation. By controlling the anisotropic friction with the substrate, these constructs displayed unidirectional inchworm- and octopus-like locomotion over macroscopic distances. The soft matter systems investigated here demonstrate the possibility of molecularly engineering photoactuators that mimic functions we associate with living organisms.

Abstract:A novel supramolecular photoactuator, created as a thin film without alignment or crosslinking, combines photochromic dithienylethene and a telechelic thermoplastic elastomer, both functionalized with ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) units. Alternating UV/visible light induces reversible bending and color changes, quantitatively correlating photochromism with movement. The study reveals efficient microscopic photostrain conversion to macroscopic actuation. A novel supramolecular photoactuator in the form of a thin film of centimetric size has been developed as an alternative to traditional liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) involving azobenzene (AZO) units or photochromic microcrystals. This thin film is produced through spin coating without the need for alignment or crosslinking. The photoactuator combines a photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) functionalized with ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) units, and a telechelic thermoplastic elastomer, also functionalized with UPy, allowing quadruple hydrogen bonding between the two components. Upon alternating ultraviolet (UV) and visible light exposure, the film exhibits reversible bending and color changes, studied using displacement and absorption tracking setups. For the first time, the photomechanical effect (PME) is quantitatively correlated with photochromism, showing that DTE units drive the movement under both UV (photocyclization) and visible (photoreversion) light. In situ illumination techniques reveal that the PME arises from photoinduced strain within 160 nm UPy‐bonded DTE domains, which expand and contract by approximately 50% under UV and visible light, respectively. The semicrystalline nature of the elastomer and a robust supramolecular network connecting both components are critical in converting microscopic photostrain into macroscopic actuation.

Abstract:The development of soft photoactuators with multifunctionality and improved performance is highly important for their broad applications. Herein, we report on a facile and efficient strategy for fabricating such photoactuators with UV-NIR dual light-responsivity, room-temperature 3D shape reprogrammability and reprocessability, and photothermal healability by doping polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles into a main-chain azobenzene semi-crystalline poly(ester-amide) (PEA). The PEA/PDA nanoparticle composite was readily processed into free-standing films with enhanced mechanical and photomechanical properties compared with the blank PEA films. Its physically crosslinked uniaxially oriented films showed rapid and highly reversible photochemically induced bending/unbending under the UV/visible light irradiation at room temperature in both the air atmosphere and water. When exposed to the NIR light, they (and their bilayer films formed with a polyimide film) exhibited photothermally induced bending even at a temperature much lower than their crystalline-to-isotropic phase transition temperature based on a unique mechanism (involving photothermally induced polymer chain relaxation due to the disruption of their hydrogen bonds). The room-temperature 3D shape reprogrammability and reprocessability and photothermal healability of the composite polymer films were also demonstrated. Such multifunctional dual light-responsive photoactuators with well-balanced mechanical robustness, actuation stability, 3D shape reprogrammability/reprocessability and photothermal healability hold much promise in various photoactuating applications. Abstract:Photoresponsive polymeric materials are a kind of functional polymers that can absorb photo energy and undergo intra- or inter-molecular physical or chemical transformations. Accompanying the changes on molecular structures and configurations, the materials exhibit the variations on certain macroscopic properties such as shape, color, or refractive index in response to light. Since light is an environment-friendly, remotely controllable and instantly operatable stimulus, photoresponsive polymers attract more and more attention. By rational design, photoresponsive polymers can generate light-driven deformations or have shape-memory properties, thus they have been led to undergo sophisticated movements such as contraction/expansion, bending, creeping, and rotation and further assembled to various smart soft actuators, which have wide applications in artificial muscles, microrobots, micropumps, microvalves and so on. This article summarizes the recent progress of light-driven soft actuators made of photoresponsive liquid crystal polymers, gels, and shape-memory polymers. Their driven mechanism and development prospect are also described.

Abstract:Shape-programmed deformation of soft polymer films is essential for applications in robotics, self-adaptive devices, and sensors. In comparison to bilayer polymer actuators, the challenge remains to manipulate single-layered soft actuators for rapid, reversible, and shape-programmed deformations in response to external stimuli owing to their homogeneous composite structures. Herein, this work reports a soft polymer film actuator that has a single-layered structure, yet demonstrates the shape-programmed motility. The actuator is composed of polyvinylidene fluoride film as a matrix and patterned by photocrosslinking of acrylamide and N', N'-methylenebisacrylamide, which generates soft-hard alternating segments in the structure. As it is exposed to acetone vapors, the soft-hard structures lead to an unequal response that results in the shape-programmed deformation. The actuator is elastic (strain: 160%) and tough (stress: 40 MPa) and can maintain its rapid, reversible, and shape-programmed motions for a few hours, even longer. The soft-hard structure enables the film actuator (3.5 mg) to give a contracting stress of 4 MPa that is used in an automatic device able to lift a cargo of 5.09 g, ∼1453 times heavier than the film itself. The power output reaches 474 J kg-1, ∼100 times higher than the reported soft actuators. This simple application indicates a potential for the soft actuator used in acetone vapor sensing devices.
Photo-induced Actuator Using Temperature and Light Dual Responsive Azobenzene Containing Ion Gel in Ionic Liquid

Abstract:A series of well-defined random copolymers comprising butyl acrylate (BA) and 4-phenylazophenylmethacrylate (AzoMA) (P(AzoMA-r-BA)) are prepared successfully by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. P(AzoMA-r-BA)s show LCST-type phase transition in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifiuoromethanesulfone)amide ([C(4)mim] [NTf2]). LCST depends on the photoisomerization state of azobenzene, as well as on the AzoMA composition in the random copolymers. LCST of (P(cis-AzoMA-r-BA) is significantly higher than that of P(trarts-AzoMA-r-BA), because cis-AzoMA and trans-AzoMA behave as solvato-philic and solvato-phobic comonomer, respectively. At a bistable temperature, photo-induced phase separation is completely reversible. Secondly, based on this phenomenon, a thermo-/photo- responsive ion gel (BA-AzoMA ion gel) can be prepared by free radical polymerization of BA and AzoMA using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as crosslinker in [C(4)mim] [NTf2]. BA-AzoMA ion gel shows high temperature contraction and low temperature expansion behavior, due to LCST-type phase behavior of polymer system consisting of AzoMA and BA. Contraction temperature of BA-AzoMA ion gel depends on photoisomerization state of the azobenzene group in polymers. At a bistable temperature, photo-induced expansion-contraction is reversible. Finally, a Photo-induced actuator can be realized using BA-AzoMA ion gel at suitable temperatures, featuring reversible bending by alternate irradiating with visible and UV light. The bending behavior is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Coupling photochromic molecules with liquid crystalline (LC) materials enables one to reversibly photocontrol unique LC features such as phase transition, photoalignment, and molecular cooperative motion. LC elastomers show photomechanical and photomobile properties, directly converting light energy into mechanical energy. In well-defined LC block copolymers, regular patternings of nanostructures in macroscopic scales are fabricated by photo-manipulation of LC actuators.
