However, the direct and robust estimation of reflection traveltime residual is still a challenging problem. In this paper, a novel method for robust and automatic reflection traveltime residual estimation is presented. First a sparse local double plane wave decomposition (SLDPWD) method is proposed, which can simultaneously decompose the pre-stack seismic data into separated seismic phases and estimate the incident and emergent ray parameters. Meanwhile, the traveltime of each seismic phase can be calculated directly. To estimate the reflection traveltime residual, a subsurface offset focusing criterion is introduced. By propagating two rays downwards to the subsurface from source and receiver positions, with the pre-estimated ray parameters from SLDPWD, the intersection of the two rays, if exist, is the ray-version of subsurface offset focusing imaging condition. Consequently the reflection traveltime shift can be estimated by calculating the difference of the traveltime of observed seismic phase and the two one-way traveltime from source to intersection point and from intersection point to receiver. With the estimated reflection traveltime residual, the inverse problem can be solved by a gradient-based method. The proposed reflection traveltime tomography method is computationally efficient, for it eliminates the need for calculating and saving the common imaging gathers (CIGs) and any explicit/implicit traveltime picking. Besides, it is a fully automatic procedure, making it quite promising for automatic macro-velocity model building.
