Abstract:The molecular dynamics simulation was used to investigate the adsorption of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polyvinyl acetate (PVA), the commonly used surface coating materials, on α-quartz surface. The objective is to understand the interactions between quartz surface and polymers. The results clearly show adsorption of both polymers onto the quartz surface. Carbonyl group plays a significant role in the adsorption process. The adsorption energies of PMMA and PVA on α-quartz surface did not show significant difference, however, more hydrogen bonds were observed on the PVA/quartz system than PMMA/quartz. These observations might offer some insights on the polymer–quartz adhesion and its failure mechanism.

Abstract:The adsorption of cationic-anionic surfactant mixtures (dodecylpyridinum chloride/sodium octylsulfonate and octyltriethylammonium bromide/sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate) on silica gel/water and silica gel/mineralized water interfaces was investigated. The effects of anionic (cationic) surfactants on the adsorption of cationic (anionic) surfactants were discussed. It was shown that the existence of anionic surfactant did not affect the adsorption of cationic surfactants on negatively charged solid surface, but the anionic surfactant, which had low amount adsorbed on negatively charged solid surface, was no longer adsorbed with the existence of cationic surfactant. The amount adsorbed of the cationic surfactant was much lower in mineralized water solution than in water solution. The results were explained based on the adsorption mechanism of silica gel.

Abstract:The adsorption of polymer microspheres in a stratum can directly affect its action mode and performance in the actual application process. Understanding the adsorption pattern of polymer microspheres and their adsorption mechanism can facilitate optimization of the application mode and enhance the use efficiency. Ultraviolet spectrophotometry was employed to measure the static adsorption characteristics of polymer microspheres (PMS) on the surface of quartz sand. The PMS adsorption capacity on the surface of quartz sand increased with increasing concentration. When the concentration was 1000 mg/L, the static equilibrium adsorption capacity was 402 μg/g, and monolayer adsorption was dominant. The effect of the contact time on the adsorption was investigated, and the fitting was performed using the isothermal adsorption thermodynamic equilibrium model and the adsorption kinetic model. The adsorption of 800 mg/L PMS tended to equilibrate after 0.8 h of adsorption on the surface of quartz sand, and the adsorption of 1400 mg/L PMS tended to equilibrate after 1 h of adsorption on the surface of quartz sand. Good fitting results of the kinetic adsorption process were obtained using the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model, pseudo-second-order (PSO) model, Elovich model, and mixed-order (MO) model. The effects of the temperature, particle size of the quartz sand, solid–liquid ratio, and salinity on the adsorption of PMS on the surface of quartz sand were examined. The PMS adsorption capacity on the surface of quartz sand decreased with increasing environmental temperature. The adsorption of PMS at the solid–liquid interface was an exothermic process, and the enthalpy of adsorption was negative. As the mass of the quartz sand in the solid–liquid ratio increased, the adsorption capacity decreased; a low salinity and neutral pH were conducive to the adsorption of PMS on the surface of quartz sand.

Abstract:Adsorption kinetics and conformation of sodium oleate and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) on the quartz surface in real time remain a challenge in the flotation system of CMC /sodium oleate/quartz. In this work, in situ adsorption characteristics of CMC and sodium oleate on quartz surface was investigated by using quartz surface crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). QCM-D data showed that the conformations and kinetics were critically dependent on pH and degree of substitution (DS) of CMC. As the degree of substitution of CMC increases, the adsorption layer on the quartz surface becomes looser. There was only one adsorption stage at pH 8 and 12, and the adsorption layer was rigid at pH 12. At pH= 10, the conformation of the adsorbed layer changes from loose to rigid and then to loose again. CMC adsorbs less in the early adsorption stage, and the adsorbed layer is loose. As the adsorption proceeds, the adsorption increases, and the adsorbed layer becomes more rigid. At stage III, the adsorbed layer becomes loose, which is considered to be the formation of a hydrated layer. Under different pH conditions, the adsorption of sodium oleate on the quartz surface had only one stage, and when CMC and sodium oleate were adsorbed one after the other on the surface of the quartz surface, two distinguishable adsorption stages appeared, and the conformation of the adsorbed layer gradually changed from rigid to loose. The change of surface free energy of quartz surface before and after CMC adsorption was also calculated by Washburn kinetic equation and the van Oss - Chaudhuri-Good theory. The results showed that the surface free energy reduced and the hydrophobicity increased after the adsorption of CMC on the quartz surface.
Carbon dioxide adsorption on amine-impregnated mesoporous materials prepared from spent quartz sand

Abstract:Mesoporous MCM-41 was synthesized using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a cationic surfactant and spent quartz sand as the silica source. Modification of the mesoporous structure to create an absorbent was then completed using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. Amine-Quartz-MCM (The A-Q-MCM) adsorbents were then characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption, elemental analysis (EA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), as well as the carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorption/desorption performance. In this study, spent quartz sand was utilized to synthesize Quartz-MCM (Q-MCM) and the amine functionalized material, A-Q-MCM, which exhibited a higher uptake of CO2 at room temperature compared with the nongrafted material. The results showed that Q-MCM is similar to MCM-41 synthesized using commercial methods. The surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter were found to be as high as 1028 m2/g, 0.907 cm3/g, and 3.04 nm, respectively. Under the condition of CO2 concentration of 5000 ppm, retention time of 50 cc/min, and the dosage of 1 g/cm3, the mean adsorption capacity of CO2 onto A-Q-MCM was about 89 mg/g, and the nitrogen content of A-Q-MCM was 2.74%. The adsorption equilibrium was modeled well using a Freundlich isotherm. Implications: In this study, spent quartz sand was utilized to synthesize Q-MCM. The amine functionalized material exhibited a higher uptake of CO2 at room temperature compared with the nongrafted material. The results showed that Q-MCM is similar to MCM-41 synthesized using commercial methods. The adsorption equilibrium was modeled well using a Freundlich isotherm.

Abstract:Benzyl quaternary ammonium salt is an effective collector of quartz from gypsum. To investigate the selective collection mechanism of tetradecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (TDBAC) for quartz from a microscopic view, the adsorption experiments, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were performed in this work. The adsorption experiment results show that the adsorption capacity of TDBAC on the quartz surface was 1.6 × 10 −6 mol/m 2 , much larger than that on the gypsum surface (1.0 × 10 −7 mol/m 2 ). The interaction energy of TDBAC with quartz surface was −20202.98 kJ/mol, much smaller than that with gypsum surface (-78.37 kJ/mol). DFT calculation results indicate that the quartz surface was more likely to interact with TDBAC through electrostatic attraction since the average negative charge and exposure oxygen density of the quartz surface were both greater than those of the gypsum surface. After the adsorption of TDBAC, there were hydrogen bonds formed between the hydrogen atoms in TDBAC and the oxygen atoms on the quartz surface. This work confirmed that the highly selective adsorption of TDBAC on quartz surface was attributed to the strong electrostatic attraction and hydrogen-bond interaction.

Abstract:The depressant behavior and mechanism of guar and xanthan gums on calcite flotation were investigated through flotation experiment, adsorption study,zetapotential measurement and infrared spectroscopy measurement. The results show thatwhenpHis8.8 and oleate concentrationis 0.3 mmol/L, xanthan gum with a dosage of 50mg/L can markedly reduce the adsorption capacity of sodium oleate on calcite surfaces, and hence decrease the calcite recovery, while a higher dosage of 100mg/L for guar gum should be added in order to achieve the similar depressant effect.The guar gumisadsorbedon calcite surface through hydrogen bonding, while xanthan interacts with calcite through chemisorption and hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:The fine grained resin ZGSPC106 was used to adsorb dimethylamine (DMA) from aqueous solution in the present research. Batch experiments were performed to examine the effects of initial pH of solution and agitation time on the adsorption process. The thermodynamics and kinetics of adsorption were also analyzed. The maximum adsorption was found at natural pH of DMA solution and equilibrium could be attained within 12 min. The equilibrium adsorption data were conformed satisfactorily to the Langmuir equation. The evaluation based on Langmuir isotherm gave the maximal static saturated adsorption capacity of 138.89 mg/g at 293K. Various thermodynamic parameters such as free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) showed that the adsorption was spontaneous, endothermic and feasible. DMA adsorption on ZGSPC106 fitted well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was discussed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis.
Adsorption of Acacia Gum on Self-Assembled Monolayer Surfaces: A Comprehensive Study Using QCM-D and MP-SPR

Abstract:The interfacial structuring of Acacia gum at various pH values on self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surfaces was investigated in order to evaluate the respective importance of surface versus biopolymer hydration in the adsorption process of the gum. To this end, SAMs with four different ending chemical functionalities (-CH3, -OH, -COOH, and -NH2) were used on gold surfaces, and the gum adsorption was monitored using multiparametric surface plasmon resonance (MP-SPR) and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation. Surface modification with alkanethiol and the subsequent adsorption of Acacia gum were also characterized by contact angle measurements using both sessile drop and captive bubble methods. According to MP-SPR results, this study demonstrated that gum adsorbed on all surfaces and that adsorption is the most favorable at both acid pH and hydrophobic environments, i.e., when both the surface and the biopolymer are weakly hydrated and more prone to interfacial dehydration. These results reinforce our recent proposal of interfacial dehydration-induced structuring of biopolymers. Increasing the pH logically decreased the adsorption capacity, especially on a hydrophilic surface, enhancing the hydration rate of the layer. A hydrophilic surface is unfavorable to Acacia gum adsorption except if the surface presents a negative surface charge. In this case, interfacial charge dehydration was promoted by attractive electrostatic interactions between the surface and biopolymers. In the aggregate, the water percentage and the viscoelastic properties were closely related to the properties of the surface function: the negative charge and hydrophobicity significantly increased the hydration rate and viscoelastic properties with the pH, while the positive charge induced a rigid and more dehydrated layer.

Abstract:The interactions between the fluorinated cationic guar gum (FCGG) and ionic surfactants including cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) were studied by light scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-spectrophotometer, (19)F NMR and dynamic rheometer, respectively. The FCGG is prepared with cationic guar gum, isophorone diisocyanate and 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluoro-1-butanol. The results show that, with the addition of the surfactants, the stretching degree of the FCGG chains is increased in the FCGG/CTAB solutions, while the dramatical shrinking of FCGG chain, the phase separation and the re-stretched macromolecules appear successively because of the electricity neutralization reaction in the FCGG/SDS system. The mixed hydrophobic domains in all solutions will be reinforced and then dismantled. The solution elasticity shows up the maximum value accordingly. The surfactants can be embedded in the micro-domains and then hinder the fluorinated segmental motions. The interactions between FCGG and SDS are much stronger than those between FCGG and CTAB.
Rheological Properties of Carboxyl-Methyl Guar Gum Solutions

Abstract:The rheological properties of carboxyl-methyl guar gum (CMG) solutions were studied. The effects of concentration of CMG, temperature, pH value and added salt on the apparent viscosity were investigated. The results showed that the apparent viscosity of CMG solutions increased with increasing concentration and decreased with increasing temperature and concentration of sodium chloride. The stable pH value of CMG solutions was from 6 to 8. The CMG solution behaved as shear-thinning fluid which the relationship between apparent viscosity and shear rate could be described by the Ostwald-Dewaele equation. The zero shear viscosity (η 0) could be obtained by using Spencer-Dillon empirical equation, and the temperature dependence of η 0 could be characterized by the Arrhenius equation. The CMG solutions possessed good viscoelasticity and thixotropy. The viscoelasticity became stronger when the CMG concentration increased.

Abstract:The adsorption behaviors of three carboxyl hydroxamic acids on diaspore (010) and kaolinite (001) have been studied by density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) method. The results indicated that carboxyl hydroxamic acids could adsorb on diaspore surface by ionic bonds and hydrogen bonds, and adsorb on kaolinite surface by hydrogen bonds. The models of carboxyl hydroxamic acids adsorbed on diaspore and kaolinite surfaces are proposed.

Abstract:AbstractThe adsorption of bentazon on two types of granular activated carbons (GACs), VRU F36X16 (VRU) and WS-480 (WS) from aqueous solution was evaluated by kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic models in this study. The impacts of initial bentazon concentration, temperature, and initial solution pH were also investigated. The equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe) of each GAC was appreciable under the experimental condition, especially VRU. For either GAC, the adsorption process fitted pseudo-second-order equation best and statistics matched two-step intra-particle diffusion model well. Dubinin–Radushkevich model was the most suitable one for bentazon adsorption on VRU, while Redlich and Peterson model best described bentazon adsorption on WS. Both for VRU and WS, the adsorption process was exothermic and belonged to physisorption. Abstract:In practical applications, the chemical and physical adsorption of a polymer solution greatly affects its action mode and effect. Understanding the adsorption mechanism and its influencing factors can help to optimize the application mode and ensure application efficiency. Three types of polymer solutions—partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM), hydrophobically associating polymer (AP-P4), and dendrimer hydrophobically associating polymer (DHAP), which are viscoelastic liquids—were used as sorbates to study their adsorption by a sorbent such as quartz sand. The effects of the solution concentration, contact time, particle size of quartz sand, solid–liquid ratio, and fluid movement on the adsorption capacity of the polymer solutions were examined. The results showed that HPAM presents a typical Langmuir monolayer adsorption characteristic, and its adsorption capacity (per unit area) is 1.17–1.62 μg/cm2. The association enhances the interactions of the AP-P4 and DHAP solutions, and they present multilayer characteristics of first-order chemical adsorption and secondary physical molecule adsorption. Moreover, the dendrite structure further increases the adsorption thickness of DHAP. Hence, the adsorption thicknesses of AP-P4 and DHAP are four and six times that of HPAM, respectively. The adsorption of the three polymers is consistent with the influence of fluid motion and decreases with increasing fluid velocity. However, the larger the thickness of the adsorption layer, the clearer the influence of the flow, and the higher the decrease in adsorption capacity. Optimizing the injection rate is an effective method to control the applications of a polymer in porous media.

Abstract:A comparative study was carried out on the surface adhesion and rheology properties of commercial conditioning polymers: cationic guar gum (SOLVAY) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (DOW). In this study, a tailor-made JKR (Johnson, Kendall, and Roberts) instrument was applied to assess the adherence of those cationic polymers at different concentrations. It was found that the concentration, molecular weight, and cationic charge density affected the adhesion performance and rheology properties. The elastic modulus (G') and viscous modulus (G '') of cationic polymers at different concentrations were correlated to their adhesion properties. On the basis of these results, the surface adhesion property can be controlled by using different types of cationic polymers and provide more insight toward better applications in personal care products.
Preparation of benzenesulfonyl hydrazone modified guar gum and its adsorption properties for dyes and phytotoxicity assays

Abstract:Herein, a novel environmentally friendly benzenesulfonyl hydrazone modified guar gum (DGH) that carries excellent adsorption performance towards dyes was facilely prepared through oxidation and condensation. The structure, morphology, and physics-chemical of DGH were fully characterized by multiple analysis techniques. The as-prepared adsorbent yielded highly efficient separating performance towards multiple anionic and cation dyes, including CR, MG, and ST with the maximum adsorption capacity of 1065.3839 ± 10.5695, 1256.4467 ± 2.9425, and 1043.8140 ± 0.9789 mg/g at 298.15 K, respectively. The adsorption process well fitted the Langmuir isotherm models and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The adsorption thermodynamics revealed that the adsorption of dyes onto DGH was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism indicated that the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction participated in the fast and efficient removal of dyes. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of DGH still remained above 90 % after six adsorption-desorption cycles, and the presence of Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ have weakly impacted the removal efficiency of DGH. The phytotoxicity assay was conducted via the germination of mung bean seeds, which confirmed the adsorbent can effectivity decreased the toxicity of dyes. Overall, the modified gum-based multifunctional material has good promising applications for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:With the growing population and industrial activities, water pollution by several chemicals such as dyes has become a significant and worrying challenge. Herein, surface-coated Guar gum biopolymer (Zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)-Guar gum (GG)-Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)) was prepared. The ZIF-8 with Guar gum and Polyvinylpyrrolidone polymer was used to prepare binary (GG/ZIF-8 (GZ) and PVP/ZIF-8 (PZ)) and ternary (GG/PVP/ZIF-8 (GPZ)) biocomposites and used to remove the cationic dye (Basic Blue 41 (BB41)). The structure and morphology of the materials were investigated using XRD, FTIR, Raman, BET, and SEM. The removal efficiencies obtained under optimal conditions, including pollutant concentration of 50 mg/L, pH = 4.5, contact time of 120 min, and adsorbent dose of 0.004 g, were obtained for PZ, GZ, and GPZ adsorbents, 67.7 %, 66.6 %, and 86.6 %, respectively. Also, the experimental adsorption capacity for 0.001 g of adsorbent was 1166.07 mg/g for GZ, 1064.01 mg/g for PZ, and 1634.01 mg/g for GPZ. The obtained data from the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic showed high coefficient values. Also, GG/PVP/ZIF-8 had high reusability after three cycles (79 %). It could be concluded that GPZ is an efficient adsorbent for BB41 adsorption from water due to its easy synthesis, high adsorption capacity, remarkable efficiency, biocompatibility, and biodegradability.

Abstract:Carboxymethylated lignin (CML), a water-soluble lignin derivative with more carboxylic groups introduced by chemical modification, can be used as dispersant in industry. In this paper, using the methods of zeta potential measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV spectroscopy, natural graphite (NG) and high-purity graphite (HPG) were selected to investigate the adsorption characteristics of CML at the hydrophobic solid/water interface. The adsorption isotherm of CML on HPG was more suitable for the Langmuir model than the Freundlich model, whereas the opposite result was obtained for the adsorption of CML on NG. Moreover, the amounts adsorbed of CML on HPG increased with higher ionic strength and lowering solution pH. However, the uptake of CML on NG increased dramatically with adding NaCl under acidic condition, while the ionic strength had no obvious influence on the adsorption under neutral condition. With increasing solution pH, the amounts of CML adsorbed on NG were dropped under acidic condition followed by increases under alkaline condition. It is suggested that the interactions between CML and the minor metallic impurities on NG surface probably contribute considerably to the differences between adsorption behaviors of CML on NG and HPG in varying solution conditions. Moreover, the results showed that the adsorption mechanism of CML at graphite/water interface could be described by Lennard-Jones potential.
Increasing surface hydrophilicity with biopolymers: a combined single bubble collision, QCM-D and AFM study

Abstract:Hypothesis: Naturally extracted polysaccharides, such as guar gum, are promising candidates for environmentally friendly flotation reagents. It is hypothesized that the kinetics of collision of sub- to millimeter gas bubbles with a hydrophobic graphite surface, and the stability of thin liquid film formed between the bubble and surface is affected by an adsorbed layer of guar gum. Experiments: A combination of gravimetric (quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation) and imaging (atomic force microscopy) techniques was used to investigate the adsorption of guar gum on graphite surface, while high-speed camera imaging allowed for direct observation of the bubble collision process with guar gum-modified graphite surfaces with millisecond resolution. Findings: Atomic force microscope topography images revealed a guar gum concentration-dependent interconnected network of guar gum molecules adsorbed at graphite surface. These adsorbed molecules at low surface coverage, changed the wettability of the graphite surface, resulting in a film drainage time longer by an order of magnitude, while at higher surface coverage successfully prevented bubble attachment to the graphite surface. Most importantly, the adsorbed layer changed the strength of the bubble's bouncing off the graphite surface. This enhanced bubble bouncing can be correlated with the film drainage time and used to predict a successful bubble-particle attachment.

Abstract:In this study, ClayFF and Dreiding force fields are jointed to model the adsorption of amine surfactants or their hydrolysate species on the solvated quartz surface under a wide range of pH values. As two case studies, cationic surfactant DDA (dodecylamine) and amphoteric surfactant LAO (N,N-Dimethylaminopropyldodecylamide oxide) are respectively selected as typical surfactants in molecular dynamic simulations. The simulation results demonstrate that DDA and LAO have excellent adsorption under natural conditions, but they have different adsorption mechanisms owing to their different polar groups. The polar group (-RN+H3) of hydrolysis DDA can penetrate the first hydration layer and perpendicularly adsorb on the quartz surface via strong electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonds. Compared with DDA, the hydrolysis LAO has a larger polar group consisting of R2N+→OH and -C(=O)NH– and its polar group lay horizontally around the first hydration layer rather than penetrate it. Besides, the adsorption of amine surfactants on quartz is inferred as multilayer based on the partial density distributions (PDD) analysis results. Subsequently, we determined the adsorption amounts, adsorption configurations and interaction energy that agreed with the quartz recovery in flotation test with a wide range of pH values.
