Abstract:PURPOSE:High-density electroencephalographic source imaging (HD-ESI) has emerged as a useful tool for pre-surgical epilepsy workup. However, it is not routinely used in clinical evaluations due to several factors, one of which is the challenge associated with creating anatomically accurate head models. Reasonable solutions now exist and the present study aims to evaluate the use of these highly resolved individual head models in pre-surgical epilepsy evaluation.METHODS:Nine patients with intractable epilepsy who were candidates for resective epilepsy surgeries participated in the study. For each patient, 256-channel electroencephalography data were acquired along with individual structural MRI data that was used to construct individual finite difference models (iFDM). Accuracy of HD-ESI based on iFDM (HD-ESI-iFDM) was evaluated using multiple criteria, including concordance with intracranial electroencephalography (icEEG) and location of surgical resection. Performance of HD-ESI-iFDM was also compared against MRI and positron emission tomography (PET) results.RESULTS:In all but one patient resective surgeries resulted in seizure-free outcome. Source locations derived from HD-ESI-iFDM demonstrated concordance with surgical resection and with icEEG data, when available. The HD-ESI-iFDM also contributed to the planning of intracranial electrodes implantation. Compared to MRI or PET, HD-ESI-iFDM provided more accurate localization of the epileptogenic zone.CONCLUSION:When acquired with high-density sensor arrays and source imaging is performed with anatomically accurate head models, electroencephalography can contribute meaningfully to epilepsy pre-surgical workup for localization of the epileptogenic zone. Now that both high-density electroencephalography and individualized FDM models can be routinely obtained, it can be incorporated as part of clinical practice.

Abstract:ObjectiveMRI‐negative (MRI–) pharmacoresistant focal epilepsy (PFE) patients are most challenging for epilepsy surgical management. This study utilizes a voxel‐based MRI postprocessing technique, implemented using a morphometric analysis program (MAP), aiming to facilitate detection of subtle focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) in MRI– patients. Furthermore, the study examines the concordance between MAP‐identified regions and localization from magnetic source imaging (MSI).MethodsIncluded in this retrospective study were 25 MRI– surgical patients. MAP was performed on T1‐weighted MRI, with comparison to a normal database. The pertinence of MAP+ areas was confirmed by MSI, surgical outcome and pathology. Analyses of MAP and MSI were performed blindly from patients' clinical information and independently from each other.ResultsThe detection rate of subtle changes by MAP was 48% (12/25). Once MAP+ areas were resected, patients were more likely to be seizure‐free (p = 0.02). There were no false positives in the 25 age‐matched normal controls. Seven patients had a concordant MSI correlate. Patients in whom a concordant area was identified by both MAP and MSI had a significantly higher chance of achieving a seizure‐free outcome following complete resection of this area (p = 0.008). In the 9 resected MAP+ areas, pathology revealed FCD type IA in 7 and type IIB in 2.InterpretationMAP shows promise in identifying subtle FCD abnormalities and increasing the diagnostic yield of conventional MRI visual analysis in presurgical evaluation of PFE. Concordant MRI postprocessing and MSI analyses may lead to the noninvasive identification of a structurally and electrically abnormal subtle lesion that can be surgically targeted. Abstract:Objective: This study evaluated the localization precision of 256-channel dense array electroencephalographic source imaging (dESI) in comparison to conventional noninvasive tools. In addition, the study was designed to analyze the relationship between the 256-channel dESI source patterns and surgical outcome.Methods: Forty-three patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) who underwent one-stage resective surgeries were recruited in this study. We compared dESI with other noninvasive evaluation methods by comparing results with resections that eliminate or significantly reduced seizures according to sub-lobule and lobule criteria. Sensitivity and specificity of multiple evaluation methods were calculated. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between source patterns and surgical outcome.Results: dESI showed the best sensitivity (sub-lobule, 91.4%; lobule, 97.1%) and specificity (75%) for both sub-lobule and lobule criteria. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that cases with "single source'' had better prognosis than with "multiple sources'' (p < 0.05); cases of "sources within resection'' showed better surgical prognosis than cases of "sources outside resection'' (p < 0.05).Conclusion: In this study, 256-channel dESI provided a higher clinical yield than the other most broadly used noninvasive presurgical workup tools. dESI results with "single source'' correlated strongly to good prognosis, while cases with "multiple sources'' may cautiously be considered as candidates for one-stage resective surgeries. The resection of the irritative zone identified by interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) was related to good surgical prognosis in TLE.Significance: In the presurgical workup of TLE, the clinical yield of 256-channel dESI is high. Patterns of dESI results are related to surgical prognosis, and they can be instructive for presurgical planning. Validating EEG source imaging using intracranial electrical stimulation

Abstract:Abstract Electrical source imaging is used in presurgical epilepsy evaluation and in cognitive neurosciences to localize neuronal sources of brain potentials recorded on EEG. This study evaluates the spatial accuracy of electrical source imaging for known sources, using electrical stimulation potentials recorded on simultaneous stereo-EEG and 37-electrode scalp EEG, and identifies factors determining the localization error. In 11 patients undergoing simultaneous stereo-EEG and 37-electrode scalp EEG recordings, sequential series of 99–110 biphasic pulses (2 ms pulse width) were applied by bipolar electrical stimulation on adjacent contacts of implanted stereo-EEG electrodes. The scalp EEG correlates of stimulation potentials were recorded with a sampling rate of 30 kHz. Electrical source imaging of averaged stimulation potentials was calculated utilizing a dipole source model of peak stimulation potentials based on individual four-compartment finite element method head models with various skull conductivities (range from 0.0413 to 0.001 S/m). Fitted dipoles with a goodness of fit of ≥80% were included in the analysis. The localization error was calculated using the Euclidean distance between the estimated dipoles and the centre point of adjacent stimulating contacts. A total of 3619 stimulation locations, respectively, dipole localizations, were included in the evaluation. Mean localization errors ranged from 10.3 to 26 mm, depending on source depth and selected skull conductivity. The mean localization error increased with an increase in source depth (r(3617) = [0.19], P = 0.000) and decreased with an increase in skull conductivity (r(3617) = [−0.26], P = 0.000). High skull conductivities (0.0413–0.0118 S/m) yielded significantly lower localization errors for all source depths. For superficial sources (<20 mm from the inner skull), all skull conductivities yielded insignificantly different localization errors. However, for deeper sources, in particular >40 mm, high skull conductivities of 0.0413 and 0.0206 S/m yielded significantly lower localization errors. In relation to stimulation locations, the majority of estimated dipoles moved outward-forward-downward to inward-forward-downward with a decrease in source depth and an increase in skull conductivity. Multivariate analysis revealed that an increase in source depth, number of skull holes and white matter volume, while a decrease in skull conductivity independently led to higher localization error. This evaluation of electrical source imaging accuracy using artificial patterns with a high signal-to-noise ratio supports its application in presurgical epilepsy evaluation and cognitive neurosciences. In our artificial potential model, optimizing the selected skull conductivity minimized the localization error. Future studies should examine if this accounts for true neural signals.

Abstract:Presurgical evaluations to plan intracranial EEG implantations or surgical therapies at most epilepsy centers in the United States currently depend on the visual inspection of EEG traces. Such analysis is inadequate and does not exploit all the localizing information contained in scalp EEG. Various types of EEG source modeling or imaging can provide sublobar localization of spike and seizure sources in the brain, and the software to do this with typical long-term monitoring EEG data are available to all epilepsy centers. This article reviews the fundamentals of EEG voltage fields that are used in EEG source imaging, the strengths and weakness of dipole and current density source models, the clinical situations where EEG source imaging is most useful, and the particular strengths of EEG source imaging for various cortical areas where spike/seizure sources are likely.

Impact of high-density EEG in presurgical evaluation for refractory epilepsy patients

Abstract:Objective: Electrical source localization (ESI) can help to identify the seizure onset zone or propagation zone, but it is unclear how dipole localization techniques influence surgical planning. Methods: Patients who received a high density (HD)-EEG from 7/2014-7/2019 at Stanford were included if they met the following inclusion criteria: (1) adequate epileptiform discharges were recorded for source localization analysis, (2) underwent surgical treatment, which was at least 6 months before the survey. Interictal ESI was performed with the LORETA method on age matched MRIs. Six neurophysiologists from the Stanford Epilepsy Program independently reviewed each case through an HIPPA-protected online survey. The same cases were presented again with additional data from the HD-EEG study. Ratings of how much the HD-EEG findings added value and in what way were recorded. Results: Fifty out of 202 patients met the inclusion criteria, providing a total of 276 h of HDEEG recordings. All patients had video EEG recordings and at least one brain MRI, 88 % had neuropsychological testing, 78 % had either a PET or SPECT scan. Additional HD-EEG information was rated as helpful in 83.8 %, not useful in 14.4 % and misleading in 1.8 % of cases. In 20.4 % of cases the HD-EEG information altered decision-making in a major way, such as choosing a different surgical procedure, avoidance of invasive recording or suggesting placement of invasive electrodes in a lobe not previously planned. In 21.5 % of cases, HD-EEG changed the plan in a minor way, e.g., extra invasive electrodes near the previously planned sites in the same sub-lobar region. In 42.3 % cases, HD-EEG did not change their plan but provided confirmation. In cases with normal MRI, additional HD-EEG information was more likely to change physicians' decision making during presurgical process when compared to the cases with MRI-visible lesions (53.3 % vs. 34.3 %, p = 0.002). Among patients achieving Engel class I/II outcome, the concordance rate of HD-EEG and resection zone was 64.7 % versus 35.3 % with class III/IV (p = 0.028). Conclusion: HD-EEG assists presurgical planning for refractory epilepsy patients, with a higher yield in patients with non-lesional MRIs. Concordance of HD-EEG dipole analysis localization and resection site is a favorable outcome indicator.
Diagnostic added value of electrical source imaging in presurgical evaluation of patients with epilepsy: A prospective study

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the diagnostic added value of electrical source imaging (ESI) in presurgical evaluation of patients with drug resistant focal epilepsy. Methods: Eighty-two consecutive patients were included. We analyzed both low density (LD) and high density (HD) EEG recordings. LD ESI was done on interictal and ictal signals recorded during long-term video-EEG monitoring (LTM), with standard 25 electrodes and age-matched template head models. HD ESI was done on shorter recordings (90-120 min), with 256 electrodes, using individual head model. The multidisciplinary team made decisions first blinded to ESI (based on all other modalities) and then discussed the results of the ESI. We considered that ESI had diagnostic added value, when it provided non-redundant information that changed the patientś management plan. Results: ESI had diagnostic added value in 28 patients (34%). In most cases (85.7%), these changes were related to planning of the invasive recordings. In nine out of 13 patients, invasive recordings confirmed the localization. Out of eight patients in whom the ESI source was resected, six became seizure-free. Conclusions: ESI provides non-redundant information in one third of the patients undergoing presurgical evaluation. Significance: This study provides evidence for the diagnostic added value of ESI in presurgical evaluation.
Source localization of ictal epileptic activity based on high-density scalp EEG data

Abstract:Objective: Electrical source imaging (ESI) is a well-established approach to localizing the epileptic focus in drug-resistant focal epilepsy. So far, ESI has been used primarily on interictal events. Emerging evidence suggests that ictal ESI is also feasible and potentially useful. We aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of ESI on ictal events using high-density electroencephalography (EEG). Methods: We performed ictal ESI on 14 patients (9 with temporal lobe epilepsy) admitted for presurgical evaluation who presented seizures during a long-term (≥18 h) high-density EEG recording (13 with 256 electrodes and one with 128 electrodes), and subsequently 8 of them underwent epilepsy surgery (postoperative follow-up >1 year). Artifact-free EEG epochs at ictal οnset were selected for further analysis. The predominant ictal rhythm was identified and filtered (±1 Hz around the main frequency). ESI was computed for each time point using an individual head model and a distributed linear inverse solution, and the average across source localizations was localized. For validation, results were compared with the resection area and postoperative outcome. Results: Ictal ESI correctly localized the epileptic seizure-onset zone in the resection area in five of six postoperatively seizure-free patients. Interictal and ictal ESI were concordant in 9 of 14 patients and partially concordant in additional 4 of 14 patients (93%). Divergent solutions were found in only one of the 14 patients (7%). Significance: Ictal ESI is a promising localization technique in focal epilepsy.

Abstract:For children with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), seizure freedom relies on the delineation and resection (or ablation/disconnection) of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) while preserving the eloquent brain areas. The development of a reliable and noninvasive localization method that provides clinically useful information for the localization of the EZ is, therefore, crucial to achieving successful surgical outcomes. Electric and magnetic source imaging (ESI and MSI) have been increasingly utilized in the presurgical evaluation of these patients showing promising findings in the delineation of epileptogenic as well as eloquent brain areas. Moreover, the combination of ESI and MSI into a single solution, namely electromagnetic source imaging (EMSI), performed on simultaneous high-density electroencephalography (HD-EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings has shown higher source localization accuracy than either modality alone. Despite these encouraging findings, such techniques are performed in only a few tertiary epilepsy centers, are rarely recorded simultaneously, and are underutilized in pediatric cohorts. This study illustrates the experimental setup for recording simultaneous MEG and HD-EEG data as well as the methodological framework for analyzing these data aiming to localize the irritative zone, the seizure onset zone, and eloquent brain areas in children with DRE. More specifically, the experimental setups are presented for (i) recording and localizing interictal and ictal epileptiform activity during sleep and (ii) recording visual-, motor-, auditory-, and somatosensory-evoked responses and mapping relevant eloquent brain areas (i.e., visual, motor, auditory, and somatosensory) during visuomotor task, as well as auditory and somatosensory stimulations. Detailed steps of the data analysis pipeline are further presented for performing EMSI as well as individual ESI and MSI using equivalent current dipole (ECD) and dynamic statistical parametric mapping (dSPM).

Abstract:Ictal EEG source imaging (ESI) is an advancing and growing application for presurgical epilepsy evaluation. For far too long, localization of seizures with scalp EEG has continued to rely on visual inspection of tracings arranged in a variety of montages allowing, at best, rough estimates of seizure onset regions. This most critical step is arguably the weakest point in epilepsy localization for surgical decision-making in clinical practice today. This review covers the methods and strategies that have been developed and tested for the performance of ictal ESI. It highlights practical issues and solutions toward sound implementation while covering differing methods to tackle the challenges specific to ictal ESI—noise and artifact reduction, component analysis, and other tools to increase seizure-specific signal for analysis. Further, validation studies to date—those with both high and low density numbers of electrodes—are summarized, providing a glimpse at the relative accuracy of ictal ESI in all types of focal epilepsy patients. Finally, given the added noninvasive information (greater degree of spatial resolution compared with standard ictal EEG review), the role of ictal ESI and its clinical utility in the presurgical evaluation is discussed.

Abstract:Stereoelectroencephalography is a powerful intracerebral EEG recording method for the presurgical evaluation of epilepsy. It consists in implanting depth electrodes in the patient's brain to record electrical activity and map the epileptogenic zone, which should be resected to render the patient seizure-free. Stereoelectroencephalography has high spatial accuracy and signal-to-noise ratio but remains limited in the coverage of the explored brain regions. Thus, the implantation might provide a suboptimal sampling of epileptogenic regions. We investigate the potential of improving a suboptimal stereoelectroencephalography recording by performing source localization on stereoelectroencephalography signals. We propose combining independent component analysis, connectivity measures to identify components of interest, and distributed source modelling. This approach was tested on two patients with two implantations each, the first failing to characterize the epileptogenic zone and the second giving a better diagnosis. We demonstrate that ictal and interictal source localization performed on the first stereoelectroencephalography recordings matches the findings of the second stereo-EEG exploration. Our findings suggest that independent component analysis followed by source localization on the topographies of interest is a promising method for retrieving the epileptogenic zone in case of suboptimal implantation.

Ictal ESI correctly localized the epileptic focus in the resection area in all operated and seizure-free patients (6/6).ConclusionIctal ESI is a promising localization technique in focal epilepsy.

Abstract:Background: The precise localization of epileptic foci is an unavoidable prerequisite for epilepsy surgery. Simultaneous EEG-fMRI recording has recently created new horizons to locate foci in patients with epilepsy and, in comparison with single-modality methods, has yielded promising results although it is still subject to a few limitations such as the lack of access to information between interictal events. This study assessed its potential added value in the presurgical evaluation of patients with complex source localization. Adult candidates considered ineligible for surgery on account of an unclear focus and/or presumed multifocality based on EEG underwent EEG-fMRI. Objectives: Adopting a component-based approach, this study attempted to identify the neural behavior of the epileptic generators and detect the components of interest to be later used as inputs in the GLM model, substituting the classical linear regressor. Methods: Nine IED sets from five patients were analyzed. These patients were rejected for surgery because of an unclear focus in two, presumed multifocality in one, and a combination of both in two of them. Results: Component-based EEG-fMRI improved localization in three out of four patients with unclear foci. In patients with presumed multifocality, component-based EEG-fMRI advocated one of the foci in five patients and confirmed multifocality in one out of five patients. In two patients, component-based EEG-fMRI opened new prospects for surgery. In these complex cases, component-based EEG-fMRI either improved source localization or corroborated a negative decision regarding surgical candidacy. Conclusion: As supported by the statistical findings, the developed EEG-fMRI method led to a more realistic estimation of localization than the conventional EEG-fMRI approach, making it a tool of high value in the presurgical evaluation of patients with refractory epilepsy.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the use of interictal spikes to localize epileptogenic brain from noninvasive scalp EEG recordings in patients with medically intractable epilepsy.Methods: Source reconstructions were performed using a high density electrode montage and a low density electrode montage by means of a distributed source modeling method. The source of interictal spike activity was localized using both a realistic geometry boundary element method (BEM) head model and 3-shell spherical head model.Results: In the analysis of 7 patients, the high density electrode montage was found to provide results more consistent with the suspected region of epileptogenic brain identified for surgical resection using intracranial EEG recordings and structural MRI lesions, as compared to the spatial low density electrode montage used in routine clinical practice. Furthermore, the realistic geometry BEM head model provided better source localization.Conclusions: Our results indicate the merits of using high density scalp EEG recordings and realistic geometry head modeling for source localization of interictal spikes in patients with partial epilepsy.Significance: The present results suggest further improvement of source localization accuracy of epileptogenic brain from interictal EEG recorded using high density scalp electrode montage and realistic geometry head models. All-in-one interictal presurgical imaging in patients with epilepsy: single-session EEG/PET/(f)MRI

Abstract:Purpose: In patients with pharmacoresistant focal epilepsy, resection of the epileptic focus can lead to freedom from seizures or significant improvement in well-selected candidates. Localization of the epileptic focus with multimodal concordance is crucial for a good postoperative outcome. Beyond the detection of epileptogenic lesions on structural MRI and focal hypometabolism on FDG PET, EEG-based Electric Source Imaging (ESI) and simultaneous EEG and functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) are increasingly applied for mapping epileptic activity. We here report presurgical multimodal interictal imaging using a hybrid PET/MR scanner for single-session FDG PET, MRI, EEG-fMRI and ESI. Methods: This quadrimodal imaging procedure was performed in a single session in 12 patients using a high-density (256 electrodes) MR-compatible EEG system and a hybrid PET/MR scanner. EEG was used to exclude subclinical seizures during uptake of the PET tracer, to compute ESI on interictal epileptiform discharges and to guide fMRI analysis for mapping haemodynamic changes correlated with interictal epileptiform activity. Results: The whole multimodal recording was performed in less than 2 hours with good patient comfort and data quality. Clinically contributory examinations with at least two modalities were obtained in nine patients and with all modalities in five patients. Conclusion: This single-session quadrimodal imaging procedure provided reliable and contributory interictal clinical data. This procedure avoids multiple scanning sessions and is associated with less radiation exposure than PET-CT. Moreover, it guarantees the same medication level and medical condition for all modalities. The procedure improves workflow and could reduce the duration and cost of presurgical epilepsy evaluations.

Abstract:The electroencephalograph (EEG) source imaging (ESI) method is a non-invasive method that provides high temporal resolution imaging of brain electrical activity on the cortex. However, because the accuracy of EEG source imaging is often affected by unwanted signals such as noise or other source-irrelevant signals, the results of ESI are often incongruous with the real sources of brain activities. This study presents a novel ESI method (WPESI) that is based on wavelet packet transform (WPT) and subspace component selection to image the cerebral activities of EEG signals on the cortex. First, the original EEG signals are decomposed into several subspace components by WPT. Second, the subspaces associated with brain sources are selected and the relevant signals are reconstructed by WPT. Finally, the current density distribution in the cerebral cortex is obtained by establishing a boundary element model (BEM) from head MRI and applying the appropriate inverse calculation. In this study, the localization results obtained by this proposed approach were better than those of the original sLORETA approach (OESI) in the computer simulations and visual evoked potential (VEP) experiments. For epilepsy patients, the activity sources estimated by this proposed algorithm conformed to the seizure onset zones. The WPESI approach is easy to implement achieved favorable accuracy in terms of EEG source imaging. This demonstrates the potential for use of the WPESI algorithm to localize epileptogenic foci from scalp EEG signals.

Electrical Source Imaging of Somatosensory Evoked Potentials from Intracranial EEG Signals

Abstract:Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) records electrical brain activity with intracerebral electrodes. However, it has an inherently limited spatial coverage. Electrical source imaging (ESI) infers the position of the neural generators from the recorded electric potentials, and thus, could overcome this spatial undersampling problem. Here, we aimed to quantify the accuracy of SEEG ESI under clinical conditions. We measured the somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) in SEEG and in high-density EEG (HD-EEG) in 20 epilepsy surgery patients. To localize the source of the SEP, we employed standardized low resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) and equivalent current dipole (ECD) algorithms. Both sLORETA and ECD converged to similar solutions. Reflecting the large differences in the SEEG implantations, the localization error also varied in a wide range from 0.4 to 10 cm. The SEEG ESI localization error was linearly correlated with the distance from the putative neural source to the most activated contact. We show that it is possible to obtain reliable source reconstructions from SEEG under realistic clinical conditions, provided that the high signal fidelity recording contacts are sufficiently close to the source of the brain activity.

Abstract:Interictal electrical source imaging (ESI) determines the neuronal generators of epileptic activity in EEG occurring outside of seizures. It uses computational models to take anatomic and neuronal characteristics of the individual patient into account. The presented article provides an overview of application and clinical value of interictal ESI in patients with pharmacoresistant focal epilepsies undergoing evaluation for surgery. Neurophysiological constraints of interictal data are discussed and technical considerations are summarized. Typical indications are covered as well as issues of integration into clinical routine. Finally, an outlook on novel markers of epilepsy for interictal source analysis is presented. Interictal ESI provides diagnostic performance on par with other established methods, such as MRI, PET, or SPECT. Although its accuracy benefits from high-density recordings, it provides valuable information already when applied to EEG with only a limited number of electrodes with complete coverage. Novel oscillatory markers and the integration of frequency coupling and connectivity may further improve accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:How to reduce the risk of damaging the epilepsy patient's vital function areas during resection of epileptic focus remains a challenge for neurosurgeon. Clinically used electrical cortical stimulation (ECS) method shows limits on accuracy, efficiency and reliability. In this study, a cortical function mapping method with 3Dvisualization was implemented by analyzing and projecting the power change of high gamma (HG) oscillation in ECoG on patient's own MRI brain model. The method was tested on epilepsy patients with subdural electrodes for three tasks (hand movement, tongue movement and silent reading). The proposed 3D cortical function mapping on the patient's individual brain structure provides direct and accurate reference for resection surgery planning.

Abstract:Recent studies have revealed the importance of high-frequency brain signals (>70 Hz). One challenge of high-frequency signal analysis is that the size of time-frequency representation of high-frequency brain signals could be larger than 1 terabytes (TB), which is beyond the upper limits of a typical computer workstation's memory (<196 GB). The aim of the present study is to develop a new method to provide greater sensitivity in detecting high-frequency magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals in a single automated and versatile interface, rather than the more traditional, time-intensive visual inspection methods, which may take up to several days. To address the aim, we developed a new method, accumulated source imaging, defined as the volumetric summation of source activity over a period of time. This method analyzes signals in both low- (1 similar to 70 Hz) and high-frequency (70 similar to 200 Hz) ranges at source levels. To extract meaningful information from MEG signals at sensor space, the signals were decomposed to channel-cross-channel matrix (CxC) representing the spatiotemporal patterns of every possible sensor-pair. A new algorithm was developed and tested by calculating the optimal CxC and source location-orientation weights for volumetric source imaging, thereby minimizing multi-source interference and reducing computational cost. The new method was implemented in C/C++ and tested with MEG data recorded from clinical epilepsy patients. The results of experimental data demonstrated that accumulated source imaging could effectively summarize and visualize MEG recordings within 12.7 h by using approximately 10 GB of computer memory. In contrast to the conventional method of visually identifying multi-frequency epileptic activities that traditionally took 2-3 days and used 1-2 TB storage, the new approach can quantify epileptic abnormalities in both low- and high-frequency ranges at source levels, using much less time and computer memory.
