Abstract:Instantaneous outbursts in underground coal mines involve catastrophic ejection of coal and large quantities of gas, coal and rock, creating a major potential mining hazard for underground miners. The catastrophic phenomena have posed a challenge to coal mine safety experts and plagued underground mining operations of gassy coal seams in many countries for over a century. Since the first reported instantaneous outbursts, considerable efforts to understand the mechanical behaviours and mechanisms of instantaneous outbursts have been paid by the many researchers all over the world, and descriptions of the dynamic phenomenon can be found in many mining literatures including a number of monographic studies. In a number of studies, attempts have been made to provide an explanation to the complex instantaneous outbursts. The precise mechanisms of an instantaneous outburst are still unresolved but must consider the effects of stress, gas content and physico-mechanical properties of the coal. Other factors such as mining methods and geological features can combine to exacerbate the problem. In this paper, a quantitative model for the coupled problem of gas flow and medium deformation associated with instantaneous outbursts is proposed. In the present model, three components including a gas flow description, a stress description and a failure description were respectively formulated in mathematical language. Based on the finite element formulations of the mathematical model, a gas pressure incorporated RFPA2D code was developed and improved to investigate the instantaneous outbursts and attempt to gain insight into the mechanisms of outbursts.
