Abstract:Perovskite crystal film quality is critical for obtaining efficient perovskite solar cells. Anti-solvent processing was used for fast crystallization of perovskite precursor film, which can form dense perovskite film. However, the crystals from this method are usually small due to the fast crystal growth process, which could lead to grain boundary recombination. Here, element chloride is introduced to enhance the perovskite layer crystallinity via slowing down the perovskite crystallization process by simultaneous introduction of methylammounium chloride (MACl) and cesium chloride (CsCl) into precursor solution. As a result, we achieve high quality of pin-hole free perovskite film with large crystal size. A power conversion efficiency of 21.55% with free of hysteresis of the device is obtained, which is among the highest efficiency of planar structure perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:To improve the performance of the polycrystalline thin film devices, it requires a delicate control of its grain structures. As one of the most promising candidates among current thin film photovoltaic techniques, the organic/inorganic hybrid perovskites generally inherit polycrystalline nature and exhibit compositional/structural dependence in regard to their optoelectronic properties. Here, we demonstrate a controllable passivation technique for perovskite films, which enables their compositional change, and allows substantial enhancement in corresponding device performance. By releasing the organic species during annealing, PbI2 phase is presented in perovskite grain boundaries and at the relevant interfaces. The consequent passivation effects and underlying mechanisms are investigated with complementary characterizations, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), time-resolved photoluminescence decay (TRPL), scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM), and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). This controllable self-induced passivation technique represents an important step to understand the polycrystalline nature of hybrid perovskite thin films and contributes to the development of perovskite solar cells judiciously.
Enhanced charge carrier transport and defects mitigation of passivation layer for efficient perovskite solar cells

Abstract:Surface passivation has been developed as an effective strategy to reduce trap-state density and suppress non-radiation recombination process in perovskite solar cells. However, passivation agents usually own poor conductivity and hold negative impact on the charge carrier transport in device. Here, we report a binary and synergistical post-treatment method by blending 4-tert-butyl-benzylammonium iodide with phenylpropylammonium iodide and spin-coating on perovskite surface to form passivation layer. The binary and synergistical post-treated films show enhanced crystallinity and improved molecular packing as well as better energy band alignment, benefiting for the hole extraction and transfer. Moreover, the surface defects are further passivated compared with unary passivation. Based on the strategy, a record-certified quasi-steady power conversion efficiency of 26.0% perovskite solar cells is achieved. The devices could maintain 81% of initial efficiency after 450 h maximum power point tracking.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have shown unprecedented development in efficiency and progressed relentlessly in improving stability. All the achievements have been accompanied by diverse passivation strategies to circumvent the pervasive defects in perovskite materials, which play crucial roles in the process of charge recombination, ion migration, and component degradation. Among the tremendous efforts made to solve these issues and achieve high-performance PSCs, we classify and review both well-established and burgeoning passivation strategies to provide further guidance for the passivation protocols in PSCs, including chemical passivation to eliminate defects by the formation of chemical bonds, physical passivation to eliminate defects by strain relaxation or physical treatments, energetic passivation to improve the stability toward light and oxygen, and field-effect passivation to regulate the interfacial carrier behavior. The subtle but non-trivial consequences from various passivation strategies need advanced characterization techniques combining synchrotron-based X-ray analysis, capacitance-based measurements, spatially resolved imaging, fluorescent molecular probe, Kelvin probe force microscope, etc. , to scrutinize the mechanisms. In the end, challenges and prospective research directions on advancing these passivation strategies are proposed. Judicious combinations among chemical, physical, energetic, and field-effect passivation deserve more attention for future high-efficiency and stable perovskite photovoltaics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) alternating cation (ACI) perovskite surface defects, especially dominant iodine vacancies (V I ) and undercoordinated Pb 2+ , limit the performance of perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). To address the issue, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoro-methane-sulfonate (BMIMOTF) and its iodide counterpart (BMIMI) are utilized to modify the perovskite surface respectively. We find that BMIMI can change the perovskite surface, whereas BMIMOTF shows a nondestructive and more effective defect passivation, giving significantly reduced defect density and suppressed charge-carrier nonradiative recombination. This mainly attributes to the marked passivation efficacy of OTF − anion on V I and undercoordinated Pb 2+ , rather than BMIMI + cation. Benefiting from the rational surface-modification of BMMIMOTF, the films exhibit an optimized energy level alignment, enhanced hydrophobicity and suppressed ion migration. Consequently, the BMIMOTF-modified devices achieve an impressive efficiency of 21.38% with a record open-circuit voltage of 1.195 V, which is among the best efficiencies reported for 2D PVSCs, and display greatly enhanced humidity and thermal stability.

Abstract:Inorganic metal halide perovskite solar cells have achieved incredible progress in recent years. However, the power conversion efficiency of the inorganic perovskite solar cells is still low compared with their hybrid counterparts due to the inescapable nonradiative losses from the charge recombination. Herein, a strategy is demonstrated to minimize the nonradiative recombination loss in CsPbI2Br solar cells by establishing a synergetic passivation from the mutual effect of alkali‐ and alkylammonium‐salt. Accordingly, a sequential passivation process employing KBr and phenethylammonium chloride overcomes their limited passivation effect in one single step. This dual passivation is beneficial to an improved CsPbI2Br film with reduced trap defects, enlarged grain size, as well as to form an ultrathin low‐dimensional perovskite surface layer. As a result, a very high power conversion efficiency of 16.9% is obtained for inorganic CsPbI2Br solar cells. The proposed dual passivation scheme provides a feasible route not only for the design of high‐efficiency perovskite solar cells but also for other perovskite‐related optoelectronic devices.
Multifunctional Organic Potassium Salt Additives as the Efficient Defect Passivator for High‐Efficiency and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The researchers introduce a multifunctional potassium 4‐chlorophenyltrifluoroborate salt as additives for perovskite precursor to improve the performance perovskite solar cells by passivating defects, promoting crystallization process of the perovskite film and suppressing non‐radiative recombination in the film. The optimal devices show an enhanced efficiency of 24.50% with remarkable thermal and long‐term stability. Despite the rapid developments are achieved for perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the existence of various defects in the devices still limits the further enhancement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and the long‐term stability of devices. Herein, the efficient organic potassium salt (OPS) of para‐halogenated phenyl trifluoroborates is presented as the precursor additives to improve the performance of PSCs. Studies have shown that the 4‐chlorophenyltrifluoroborate potassium salt (4‐ClPTFBK) exhibits the most effective interaction with the perovskite lattice. Strong coordination between BF3−/halogen in anion and uncoordinated Pb2+/halide vacancies, along with the hydrogen bond between F in BF3− and H in FA+ are observed. Thus, due to the synergistic contribution of the potassium and anionic groups, the high‐quality perovskite film with large grain size and low defect density is achieved. As a result, the optimal devices show an enhanced efficiency of 24.50%, much higher than that of the control device (22.63%). Furthermore, the unencapsulated devices present remarkable thermal and long‐term stability, maintaining 86% of the initial PCE after thermal test at 80 °C for 1000 h and 95% after storage in the air for 2460 h.

Abstract:Defects in perovskite films are one of the main factors that affect the efficiency and stability of halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Uncoordinated ions (such as Pb2+, I−) act as trap states, causing the undesirable non-radiative recombination of photogenerated carriers. The formation of Lewis acid–base adducts in perovskite directly involves the crystallization process, which can effectively passivate defects. In this work, 4-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-imidazole (THI) was introduced into the perovskite precursor solution as a passivation agent. THI is a typical amphoteric compound that exhibits a strong Lewis base property due to its lone pair electrons. It coordinates with Lewis acid Pb2+, leading to the reduction in defect density and increase in crystallinity of perovskite films. Finally, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSC increased from 16.49% to 18.97% due to the simultaneous enhancement of open-circuit voltage (VOC), short circuit current density (JSC) and fill factor (FF). After 30 days of storage, the PCE of the 0.16 THI PSC was maintained at 61.9% of its initial value, which was 44.3% for the control device. The working mechanism of THI was investigated. This work provides an attractive alternative method to passivate the defects in perovskite.

Abstract:Modifying perovskites with functional additives has proven effective in refining the crystallization process and passivating the defects of perovskite films, thereby ensuring high photovoltaic efficiencies. However, conventional methods that involve pre-mixing additives into the precursor solution often face challenges due to discrepancies in the spatial distribution of slow-diffused additives relative to dynamically formed defect sites, resulting in limited passivation effectiveness. To address this issue, this study innovatively proposes a dynamic passivation strategy that utilizes a pre-passivator to gradually release active additives during the thermal crystallization process of perovskite films. By leveraging the principle of energy minimization, these timely-released additives can interact precisely and selectively with the high-energy defect sites generated during crystallization, thus facilitating efficient additive utilization and in situ real-time defect passivation. Through analysis of crystallization kinetics and carrier dynamic, it is demonstrated that this dynamic passivation approach significantly improves film quality and prolongs carrier lifetime, outperforming traditional pre-mixing tactics. Consequently, the final perovskite solar cell achieves an impressive solar conversion efficiency of 25.33%, along with exceptional stability. This work provides strong support of tailored additive strategies aimed at further enhancing the efficiency of perovskite solar cells and their subsequent commercial applications.

Abstract:Stability, as an important factor limiting the practical application of perovskite solar cells, has attracted many scientists. Herein, we introduce a hydrophobic molecule of thiosalicylic acid as a passivator to enhance the device stability. The strategy not only improves the thermal stability and anti-moisture of the perovskite film by double anchoring of functional groups to uncoordinated lead ions and the hydrophobicity of the aromatic ring, but also enhances the electronic properties by removing deep trap states of the perovskite film. Further research on the perovskite solar cells with thiosalicylic acid passivation shows that the efficiency of the device can reach 18.07% and good stability. When stored in the air with a relative humidity of 30% for 15 days, the efficiency can still maintain 89.98% of the initial value. The present work offers a simple and effective strategy in fabrication of stable and efficient perovskite solar cells.
Enhancing Performance and Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells through Surface Defect Passivation with Organic Bidentate Lewis Bases

Abstract:Organic Lewis bases [2,2'-bipyridine (BPY), 4-hydroxy-1,5-naphthyridine-3-carbonitrile (DQCN), and thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTFA)] with bi-coordination sites of N and O were employed as perovskite surface defect passivants to address the efficiency and stability issues of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), with typical phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI) and piperazinium iodide (PI) passivants as reference. The surface properties of the perovskite films before and after passivation were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared, ultraviolet-visible, photoluminescence (PL), and time-resolved PL spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The characterizations reveal that BPY, DQCN, or TTFA forms coordination bonds with exposed "Pb2+", leading to a slight decrease in the highest occupied molecular orbital or lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level and bandgap. These passivants (especially TTFA) can passivate the perovskite surface defects to inhibit non-radiative recombination while having almost no influence on the grain size and surface morphology. Utilizing the passivated perovskite as the light absorption layer, solar cells with an inverted configuration of indium tin oxide/NiO x /passivated MAPbCl x I3-x /C60/BCP/Ag have been fabricated, and power conversion efficiencies of 19.22, 17.85, 16.49, 16.31, and 17.88% have been achieved from PEAI, PI, BPY, DQCN, and TTFA, respectively. All the device performance based on passivated perovskite is superior to that of the control (15.75%) owing to the reduced carrier recombination. The device from TTFA exhibits almost comparable efficiency to that of PEAI and PI controls, indicating that TTFA has an equal excellent passivation effect to state-of-the-art PEAI and PI. Furthermore, the devices based on BPY, DQCN, and TTFA show superior long-term stability with an efficiency loss of only 13.2, 16.7, and 12.9%, respectively, after being stored for 40 days in a ∼12% humidity, low-oxygen level environment, which is 45.4, 38.8, and 44.4% for the control, PEAI, and PI devices, respectively, primarily due to the improved hydrophobicity of the perovskite surface. Our results demonstrate that it is feasible to achieve high-efficiency and long-term-stable perovskite solar cells via selecting the appropriate molecules to passivate perovskite surface defects.

Abstract:In recent times, mixed cation-based perovskite has gained a lot of popularity in high-performance solar cells. However, the mixed cations based on the FA x MA1–x PbI3 absorber layer still exhibit a higher trap state density, which decreases the overall performance, especially in the open-circuit voltage (V OC) and fill factor (FF). Herein, we show that surface passivation by the organic halide PEACl is an effective way to reduce the trap state density. This efficient PEACl treatment reduces the halide deficiency present at the perovskite surface and reduces surface defects and nonradiative recombination. The resultant perovskite solar cell exhibits a higher V OC (1.15 V), 92% of the Shockley-Queisser limit (1.25 V), and a higher FF than standard perovskite.

Abstract:Charge carrier recombination caused by the buried interface defects in perovskite solar cells is widely accepted as a challenge that seriously degrades device performance and stability. Herein, we devise a facile method to passivate the buried titanium dioxide (TiO2)/perovskite interface using potassium hydroxide (KOH) through a wet chemical process. OH– and K+ can coordinate with the undercoordinated Ti and O on the TiO2 surface, respectively. Meanwhile, due to the strong interaction between K+ and Br–, Br– in the MAPbI2.85Br0.15 perovskite would be attracted and thus migrate toward the TiO2/perovskite interface during the formation process. Hence, KOH can not only passivate the interface but also effectively glue the TiO2 electron transfer layer and the perovskite layer together to generate a tightly integrated interface, which effectively reduces interface defects. Moreover, KOH at the interface can mediate the nucleation process and promote the formation of the perovskite layer with less defects. Thus, improved charge carrier extraction and reduced nonradiative recombination are achieved. As a result, the perovskite solar cell with KOH interface passivation demonstrates an increase in power conversion efficiency from 17.12 to 19.19%, associated with a good improvement of stability.

Abstract:Benefiting from favorable interaction via coordination and hydrogen bonds, an organic potassium perfluorobutyl sulfonate achieves the target passivation of surface defects of FAPbI3 perovskite films and improved interfacial charge transfer. With such effective defect engineering, champion efficiencies of 25.11%, 24.17%, and 20.18% are demonstrated for small‐sized and centimeter‐sized solar cells and 5 cm × 5 cm solar mini‐modules, as well as good stability. Passivating surface defects on perovskite films with tailored functional materials has emerged as one of the most effective strategies for achieving high‐performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Among existing material selections, potassium salts stand out for their effective passivation of defects surrounding perovskite grain boundaries. However, the widely used potassium salts are inorganic and only soluble in highly polar solvents, which limits their practical application for surface passivation. Herein, a novel organic potassium salt (KCFSO), with multiple organic functional groups and good solubility in low polar isopropanol, is reported to function as a post‐treatment agent for perovskite. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculations, the formed multiple intermolecular interactions between KCFSO and perovskite are revealed to play a vital role in determining the defect passivation effect. Thus, the KCFSO‐modified film shows a more uniform surface potential distribution, dramatically decreased defect density, and improved charge transfer, leading to a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.11%, and good stability for the derived PSCs. As a demonstration of scalability, the centimeter‐sized PSCs and 5 cm × 5 cm mini‐modules also demonstrate impressive PCEs of 24.17% and 20.18%, respectively. These findings provide insights into passivator design principles to achieve efficient and stable perovskite photovoltaics.

Post‐Treatment Passivation by Quaternary Ammonium Chloride Zwitterion for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been booming for more than a decade. Defect passivation strategies play an important role in updating the efficiency record. Herein, a posttreatment strategy is proposed to passivate the defects in PSCs by quaternary ammonium chloride (QAC) salts. The tetramethylammonium chloride (TC) molecule shows the best achievement among those passivation agents. Enhanced crystallinity and reduced defects of TC‐treated perovskite result in promotion of the open‐circuit voltage of the device from 1.06 to 1.12 V, thus largely improving the conversion efficiency from 19.8% to 21.7% for the FA0.95MA0.05PbI2.85Br0.15 perovskite component. Moreover, the TC‐based device retains 93.2% of its initial power conversion efficiency after storage in drying cupboard (relative humidity 20%≈30%) for more than 30 days. By the verification of various characterization techniques (transient resolved photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, light intensity dependent voltage, and transient absorption spectroscopy), the enhanced performance results from the less recombination retarded by QAC in the treated device compared with the control device. Additionally, X‐ray photoelectronic spectroscopy proves the interaction between TC molecule and Pb in perovskite. This system of selection will definitely provide a novel way to search for effective passivators to promote performance of PSCs. Four different quaternary ammonium chloride salts have been studied for posttreatment passivation strategy. Tetramethylammonium chloride (TC) shows the best passivation effect. Due to alleviation of metallic lead on the perovskite surface, it increases the efficiency of the device from 19.7% to 21.7% by largely promoting the open‐circuit voltage from 1.06 to 1.12 V with enhanced stability.

Abstract:Non-radiative recombination has a negative impact on the device performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and defect passivation can suppress the non-radiative recombination sufficiently. Herein, an innovative and effective synergistic passivation strategy is reported by introducing three kinds of maleic anhydride derivatives serving as Lewis base additives to the PbI2 precursor solution to obtain modified perovskite films and systematically investigating the synergistic effect of functional group passivation defects. Studies found that the electronic effect of the maleic anhydride derivatives would affect their interaction with defects. For example, the electrostatic interaction between the −CH3 positively charged by the conjugation effect and iodine(I) in 2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride (M-MAH) enhances the coordination strength of the CO bond with antisite lead (Pb) defects. Such synergetic passivation of M-MAH improves crystallinity and orientation and reduces defect state density. This modification also causes the edge of the perovskite band to bend upward, facilitating hole extraction and transport. These advantages enable the M-MAH-modified PSCs a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.61% and significant environmental stability. Our findings not only provide new insights into the synergistic passivation associated with electrostatic interaction but also propose a simple strategy for fabricating high-performance perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Hybrid halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as the next-generation photovoltaic technology. Compared to steady silicon solar cells, PSCs are facilely processable but easily generate defects/traps during the thin-film fabrication from the solution. To passivate these defects, which have been considered as the origin of PSC instability, numerous large-sized organic cations (LSOCs) were applied via post-treatment methods. Unfortunately, along with the passivation on defects, these LSOCs could also react with regular perovskite phases and convert them into layered perovskite phases with poorer optoelectronic performances. Herein, we have designed carbazole ethylammonium iodide (CzEAI), a LSOC salt which exhibits a variation from monovalent to divalent state. Importantly, unlike traditional LSOC passivators in monovalent states mostly consumed by a regular perovskite phase and merely affecting the upper domain in thin films, CzEA in monovalent state could penetrate through the whole domain in perovskite films and then accurately convert into a divalent state at defect sites and thus realize a full-scale passivation in PSCs. Both simulation and experimental results proved that a CzEA passivator could overcome the formation of poor optoelectronic layered perovskite phases. As a result, the CzEA passivated PSC demonstrated an optimized photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.14% together with a significantly improved long-term stability over 5000 h.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic halide perovskite photovoltaic devices have advanced rapidly in recent years, and the photoelectric conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has exceeded 25%. However, the defects from the crystallization process become nonradiation recombination centers and hinder the performance and the stability of PSCs. Defect passivation by tuning grain size and grain boundary (GB) is an effective strategy to reduce the defects on GBs and film surface. Herein, recent progress in the passivation strategy for perovskite films is summarized, including nonstoichiometric passivation, iodide vacancies filling, dimensional engineering, passivation with crosslink, physical passivation, and other passivation methods. These passivation strategies play an important role in improving the quality of perovskite films, adjusting the energy band structure, reducing the density of defect states, and suppressing the nonradiative recombination of carriers. Finally, this review puts forward the development direction of passivation strategies to further improve the performance of PSCs.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites and double perovskites are both perovskite materials that have attracted much attention recently due to their excellent photoelectric properties. Hybrid perovskites have suitable band gaps but poor intrinsic stability. In contrast, double perovskites have a wide band gap but excellent stability. Therefore, we developed a strategy to modify hybrid-perovskite solar cells by utilizing double- perovskite (Cs2AgBi0.1In0.Cl-9(6)) nanocrystals to improve the stability of the devices. We have demonstrated that this strategy can effectively suppress nonradiative recombination, and reduce defects without affecting the absorption of the absorption layer. The performance and stability of MAPbI(3) solar cells fabricated by this strategy have been significantly improved. In addition, the FAPbI(3) solar cells prepared by this strategy show better performance, indicating that this strategy has a certain universality.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted much attention because of their high photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) and simple preparation process. At present, one of the major factors limiting the further improvement of PSCs' performance is defects in perovskite active layers. Herein, we report an effective surface post-treatment method for perovskite active layers, which uses potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) to passivate multiple defects, improve photovoltaic performance and reduce the hysteresis. It is demonstrated that not only S=O and S–N bonds but also charged K+ and FSI− ions in KFSI contribute to the passivation of multiple defects in perovskite films via Lewis acid-base interaction and/or forming ionic bonds. After the optimized KFSI treatment, the trap density of the perovskite film decreased from 8.41×1015cm−3 to 3.97×1015cm−3, which significantly suppressed trap-assisted nonradiative recombination of carriers in perovskite films and/or at perovskite/hole transport layer interface. The KFSI treated device achieved a PCE of ∼19.00% with less hysteresis, appreciably outperforming the control device (17.22%). At the same time, the performance reproducibility among the fabricated solar cells was remarkably improved. This work provides a facile way to passivate multiple defects in perovskite films and further enhance the performance of perovskite solar cells.
