Abstract:Defects are significant for graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN) in photocatalytic applications. Defective CN not only accelerate charge separation but also extend spectral response. Engineering carbon or nitrogen defects in CN has been achieved by variety of strategies, but it is still a long-term interest to develop a simple and controllable route for engineering defects in CN. Herein, we present tuning the nitrogen defects in CN by either changing the heating rate or prolonging the pyrolysis time during polymerization melamine sulfate. It was found that either lower heating rate or longer pyrolysis time lead to the formation of more N vacancies and suspended terminal amino. As a result, an optimal photocatalytic H2 yield rate (? > 420 nm) of 905 ?mol g-1 h-1 was reached, which was 2 times higher than that of CN prepared with a heating rate of 1 ?C/min and pyrolysis at 600 ?C for 4 h.

Therefore, the modified g-C3N4 material show a ten times higher photocatalytic hydrogen amount than the pristine one and the corresponding apparent quantum efficiency under 405 and 420 nm are 32.30 % and 17.94 %, respectively. In this work, the defect assemblage into g-C3N4 shows the potential of synergistic effect of different defects on enhancing photocatalytic performance, which can pave a new avenue for the defect engineering in photocatalysis.

Abstract:The precise molecular tunability strategy is deemed to have great potential to improve the photocatalytic performance of metal-free photocatalysts for applying in hydrogen evolution but remains a formidable task. We herein cover a logical design for integrating N defect engineering and pi-conjugation structure into g-C3N4. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of up to 1541.6 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) is acquired over the optimum DCN350, which has 7.5-fold increase over primal g-C3N4 (205.9 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)). The experimental study and density functional theory (DFT) investigations confirm that DCN350 with N defects not only can shorten band gaps for expanding the light absorption range via optimizing the electronic band structure, but also act as active sites for facilitating hydrogen evolution reaction. Besides, the -C=N as strong electron-withdrawing functional group can make the isolated valence electrons delocalized to drive the charge spatial separation. Therefore, the light absorption capacity and charge separation/transfer of g-C3N4 can be flexibly mastered via changing calcination temperature of g-C3N4 and NaBH4. Overall, this study provides an opportunity for having a deep understanding the role of structural defects on ameliorating the photocatalytic evolution hydrogen activity.

Abstract:Graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is widely recognized as a remarkable material for both the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production. In this study, we reported a method to obtain a broken hollow carbon nitride with nitrogen defects and hydroxyl groups, prepared from melamine and cyanuric acid through self-assembly. It demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic performance, achieving a 99.35% removal of Rhodamine B, 88.08% degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride, and a hydrogen production rate of 1671.12 mu mol g- 1 h-1, all of which are superior to the performance of bulk g-C3N4. The superior redox performance was attributed to the significant increase in specific surface area and the synergistic effects of nitrogen defects and hydroxyl groups. These modifications effectively altered the built-in electric field, electronic structure, and redox potential of g-C3N4. Experimental and theoretical analyses revealed that photogenerated electrons were enriched in nitrogen vacancies, while holes were captured by hydroxyl groups, resulting in the rapid transfer and separation of charge carriers. On this basis, possible synthesis pathways and photocatalytic mechanisms of the catalyst were proposed. This work provides a promising method for preparing modified carbon nitride with excellent photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The g-C3N4 nanosheets with N-defects were fabricated by a sample oxidative reaction via H2O2, which can generate hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) to destruct the bonds of g-C3N4. The existence of center dot OH was confirmed by PL (photoluminescence spectroscopy) and HPIC (high-pressure ion chromatography). The N-defects were confirmed by the concentration of nitrate in solution increasing from 1.04 to 4.65 mg/L. Further, the source of N-defects was speculated as the destruction of C=N-C due to its lower bond-energy and decreasing ratio of C=N-C (CASTEP, XPS). As a result, the obtained N-defective g-C3N4 improved the photocatalytic degradation efficiency to Methylene blue (MB) from 53.1% (g-C3N4) to 100.0% under visible light. This result was ascribed by the N-defect narrowed the bandgap from 2.71 to 2.67 eV, accelerated the separation and transfer of photo-generated carriers. This work provides a new strategy to construct defects in a catalyst improving photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The large surface area providing more reactive sites and the fitting energy-band structure accelerating electron migration over photocatalysts are indispensable in controlling the photocatalytic activity via the morphology modulation and optimized electronic structures. For enhancing the photocatalytic performance, herein, nitrogen vacancies with ultrathin porous polymeric carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were synthesized by conventional polymerization combined with melamine and sublimation sulfur under the N2 atmosphere. During this process, the escape of gas (NH3 and CO2) generates the porous structure, while the presence of sublimated sulfur carries away the N atoms of the framework to create unsaturated carbon sites, resulting in N vacancies. The ultrathin mesoporous system would increase the specific surface area of g-C3N4 and reduce the transfer distance of the photoinduced carriers. Additionally, the optimal nitrogen defects might slightly enhance the visible light response activity and decrease the recombination of photoinduced electron–holes. These results led to a superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate at 3.16 mmol/g/h, which was increased by 57.45-fold compared with pristine g-C3N4 (0.055 mmol/g/h). The present research provides helpful insight into designing an effective and low-cost method for fabricating promising photocatalysts using sublimation sulfur as a defective forming agent to obtain a novel photocatalyst with both ultrathin vacancies and porous structure.

Abstract:By heating g-C3N4 powder in the hydrogen atmosphere, nitrogen defects were introduced into the framework of g-C3N4 where the nitrogen atoms in g-C3N4 were reacted and partially removed with hydrogen. The effects of nitrogen defects on the electronic structure, optical properties, generation of reactive oxygen species and photocatalytic NO oxidation of g-C3N4 were investigated by combining experimental characterization and DFT theoretical calculations. The N defect is located at N-2C sites and can be tuned by the H-2 treating temperature. The obtained N defective g-C3N4 products possessed narrower bandgap adjusted by surface N defects and were able to promote the separation of photoexcited charge carries and produce reactive oxygen species more efficiently than pristine g-C3N4. The NO+ reaction intermediate was formed on the N defects sites and enabled an accelerated photocatalytic reaction that contributed to enhanced photocatalytic NO removal. The NO removal ratio on N defects g-C3N4 obtained at 600 degrees C (CH-H-600) was 2.6 times that of pristine g-C3N4 under visible light irradiation. The present work could provide new insights into the understanding of the role of N-defects in g-C3N4 and application of photocatalytic technology for efficient air purification.
Tailoring Advanced N-Defective and S-Doped g-C3 N4 for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Abstract:Although challenges remain, synergistic adjusting various microstructures and photo/electrochemical parameters of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are the keys to alleviating the energy crisis and environmental pollution. In this work, a novel nitrogen-defective and sulfur-doped g-C3 N4 (S-g-C3 N4 -D) is designed elaborately. Subsequent physical and chemical characterization proved that the developed S-g-C3 N4 -D not only displays well-defined 2D lamellar morphology with a large porosity and a high specific surface area but also has an efficient light utilization and carriers-separation and transfer. Moreover, the calculated optimal Gibbs free energy of adsorbed hydrogen (ΔGH* ) for S-g-C3 N4 -D at the S active sites is close to zero (≈0.24 eV) on the basis of first-principle density functional theory (DFT). Accordingly, the developed S-g-C3 N4 -D catalyst shows a high H2 evolution rate of 5651.5 µmol g-1 h-1 . Both DFT calculations and experimental results reveal that a memorable defective g-C3 N4 /S-doped g-C3 N4 step-scheme heterojunction is constructed between S-doped domains and N-defective domains in the structural configuration of S-g-C3 N4 -D. This work exhibits a significant guidance for the design and fabrication of high-efficiency photocatalysts.
Enhancing hydrogen evolution of g-C 3 N 4 with nitrogen vacancies by ethanol thermal treatment

Abstract:A highly photoactive nitrogen-deficient g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst with porous frame work has been prepared by a simple, effective, and environmental-friendly method of ethanol thermal treatment. It is found that the as-synthesized catalyst exhibits an enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity for H 2 evolution. The H 2 -evolution rate on the treated g-C 3 N 4 is 4.2 times higher than the untreated-C 3 N 4 . The treated g-C 3 N 4 and untreated g-C 3 N 4 are characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL), UV-Vis absorption (UV-Vis), photocurrent measurement, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Characterization results show that the ethanol thermal treatment induces nitrogen vacancies and hierarchical porous structure in g-C 3 N 4 . Such a structural reconstruction is beneficial for improving optical absorption and hindering photoinduced charger recombination on g-C 3 N 4 , resulting in the enhanced photocatalytic activity. Abstract:Nitrogen defect engineering has been deemed to be a promising strategy to overcome the inherent shortcomings, i.e., sluggish charge separation and limited spectral response range, of g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst. Herein, the construction of nitrogen-deficient g-C 3 N 4 has been developed via a simple approach of modulating the type of urea precursor. The experimental investigation and theoretical calculations reveal that this novel route endows g-C 3 N 4 with distinctive nitrogen defects, accompanying the decreased bandgap and the formation of midgap states under the conduction band edge, thus remarkably broadening the visible-light harvesting capability. Furthermore, the N defect also results in enhanced electrical conductivity, which greatly improves the charge carrier transfer and separation for photoredox reaction. As a result, the novel g-C 3 N 4 , named DCN, delivers a significantly high visible-light-responsive H 2 evolution rate of 6.0 mmol h −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation, which is >5 times higher than that of the g-C 3 N 4 (CN) synthesized using the common urea precursor. This work opens a novel avenue to fabricate nitrogen defect-regulated g-C 3 N 4 for highly efficient H 2 evolution and must intrigue a new wave of research upsurge on this kind of photocatalyst.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been demonstrated as a promising non-metal material for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE), while its photocatalytic activity is greatly limited due to the narrow visible light response-ability and the intrinsic severe charge deep trapping and recombination effects. Herein, a co-functionalized g-C3N4 system by Se doping and nitrogen vacancies modification is developed through a Se vapor-assisted-chemical vapor deposition synthetic strategy. Advanced characterization results revealed that Se dopants promote the visible-light absorption ability of g-C3N4, while nitrogen defects-induced shallow trap states are constructive to improving charge separation/transportation efficiency by effectively retarding the detrimental charge deep trapping and recombination. As a result, the synergistic effect of the Se dopants and nitrogen defects leads to a highly efficient PHE performance of g-C3N4. The integrated engineering strategy and mechanism understanding provided in this work may offer new insights into developing other novel photocatalysts for various applications.

Abstract:Unreacted amino groups (NHx) existed in the bulk g-C3N4 always act as charge trap sites which resulting in low photocatalytic activity. In this paper, the hydrogenated deficient gC(3)N(4) (HDCN) was prepared by calcining bulk g-C3N4 with NaBH4 under an inert atmosphere. It was found that NHx groups were absolutely reduced into both nitrogen vacancies and the cyano groups (C.N groups) in the frameworks of g-C3N4 after this surface hydrotreating. Therefore, the photo-induced carrier recombination is suppressed dues to the disappeared NHx groups. As a result, the HDCN sample displayed a higher photocatalytic H-2 evolution activity than the bulk g-C3N4.

Abstract:One of the most important methods for modifying semiconductors is defect engineering, but only the right quantity of defects in the right chemical environment can produce desirable results. Heat treatment processes associated with g-C3N4 are occasionally carried out in N-2 atmosphere, however, the catalytic performance of g-C3N4 produced by direct condensation of only nitrogen-rich precursors in N-2 atmosphere is often unsatisfactory. This is typically attributed to the introduction of numerous defects, but the actual relationship between the formation of defects and the N-2 atmosphere is rarely explained, and the resulting quantity of defects is difficult to control. We propose that the melam to melem transition is restricted due to the lack of O-2 during the heat treatment of the nitrogen-rich precursor of g-C3N4 in N-2 atmosphere, which leads to a substantial quantity of defects in the synthesized g-C3N4. To enhance its photocatalytic property, we propose a method to reduce the quantity of defects due to calcinating in N-2 atmosphere by protonating the precursor in a way that increases the polymerization of the product. The test analysis indicated that only a moderate quantity of defects that contribute to electron excitation and enhance the separation efficiency and density of photogenerated carriers were retained, and the hydrogen evolution performance of the prepared catalyst was significantly improved.
Nitrogen-Defective Protonated Porous C3N4 Nanosheets for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production under Visible Light

Abstract:Defect engineering with morphology control is strategy to tailoring photocatalytic performance of carbon nitride (C3N4) for producing clean hydrogen (H2). Herein, a kind of protonated C3N4 porous nanosheets with nitrogen-defects of N1-vacancy and cyano group (named C3N4-ND) was simple synthesized. In the process, the strong oxidizing nitric acid was used skillfully to introduce N1-vacancy and -CN group into C3N4 and achieves protonation. The nitrogen-defects engineering can shorten band gap, improve the separation of photogenerated carriers. And the defect site, can used as active center and effectively adsorb H+ for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Simultaneously, the porous nanosheets greatly increase specific area enhanced contact with light and reaction fluids and more reactive sites than bulk C3N4 (BCN). Thus, the C3N4-ND can obtain brilliant photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Typically, C3N4-ND1.7 exhibits excellent photocatalytic H2 evolution rate up to 1.12mmol·g-1·h-1 for photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) and 39.18mmol·g-1·h-1 for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE, 0.5vol.% TEOA as sacrificial agent) under visible light, which has 22.4 and 75.34 times increase over BCN, respectively. This work confirmed the positive effect of defect and morphology engineering on improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of C3N4.

Abstract:Defect design and crystallinity engineering can greatly promote the charge carrier transfer and separation of carbon nitride (CN). Herein, we develop an efficient strategy for synthesizing a defect-rich crystalline CN with both improved surface and bulk carrier separation for superior solar-driven hydrogen evolution. This process is realized by the rationally designed CN photocatalyst with high bulk crystallinity and abundant surface nitrogen defects via a two-step alkali treatment coupled to a molten salt method. Molten salt synthesis yields highly crystalline carbon nitride and substantially promotes bulk photocarrier separation. The following KOH treatment creates abundant nitrogen vacancies and cyano groups on the surface of CN while preserving high crystallinity in the bulk, which act as effective electron sinks to trap photogenerated electrons, leading to promoted surface and bulk carrier separation and accelerated charge migration from the bulk to surface. Through tailoring the KOH concentration, the levels of nitrogen defects can be flexibly tuned. As a result, the overall photocarrier separation is promoted by the synergistic action of high crystallinity and a surface defect structure. The optimally modulated photocatalyst achieves a remarkably boosted hydrogen production rate by 4.7 times compared to pristine bulk CN under visible light irradiation and maintains high activity after a prolonged reaction of 35 h. This study provides a facile and efficient route to facilitate carrier dynamics of CN and helps us to understand the relationship between defect, crystallinity, and photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Herein, the high efficiency of carbon nitride photocatalysis for hydrogen evolution in visible light is achieved by an S‐modified double‐deficient site (N‐vacancy, cyano) strategy. The cyano group acts as an electron trap to capture photoexcited electrons, providing the active site for the reduction of H+ to hydrogen. The accumulation of charge at the cyano provides a strong driving force for the directional transfer of photogenerated carriers. Graphitic carbon nitride (gC3N4) is an attractive photocatalyst for solar energy conversion due to its unique electronic structure and chemical stability. However, gC3N4 generally suffers from insufficient light absorption and rapid compounding of photogenerated charges. The introduction of defects and atomic doping can optimize the electronic structure of gC3N4 and improve the light absorption and carrier separation efficiency. Herein, the high efficiency of carbon nitride photocatalysis for hydrogen evolution in visible light is achieved by an S‐modified double‐deficient site strategy. Defect engineering forms abundant unsaturated sites and cyano (─C≡N), which promotes strong interlayer C─N bonding interactions and accelerates charge transport in gC3N4. S doping tunes the electronic structure of the semiconductors, and the formation of C─S─C bonds optimizes the electron‐transfer paths of the C─N bonding, which enhances the absorption of visible light. Meanwhile,C≡N acts as an electron trap to capture photoexcited electrons, providing the active site for the reduction of H+ to hydrogen. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency of SDCN (1613.5 μmol g−1 h−1) is 31.5 times higher than that of pristine MCN (51.2 μmol g−1 h−1). The charge separation situation and charge transfer mechanism of the photocatalysts are investigated in detail by a combination of experimental and theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The intrinsic high charge recombination and narrow light absorption seriously affect the performance of g-C3N4 toward photocatalytic hydrogen generation. In this work, this problem is partially overcome by a dual-gas-phase treatment protocol, first ammonia and followed by phosphine annealing. Owing to facilitated contact between gas precursor and layered g-C3N4, the ammonia annealing created N vacancies provide cross-plane diffusion channels for efficient bulk charge separation and more active sites due to decreased aggregation. Despite the band gap broadening being accompanied by ammonia annealing, the introduction of a secondary impurity (P atom) in corner carbon sites narrows down the band gap to 2.56 eV. The combination of N defects (amine groups) and P dopants (carbon defects) allows capturing as many atomic Pt as possible as cocatalyst, with weakened binding energy between Pt and H atom by 0.42 V when compared to Pt–H binding in pristine g-C3N4. This leads to a low overpotential for materials to efficiently break energy barriers in the process of interfacial charge transfer. As a result, the target material beyond the one obtained by traditional solid or liquid doping delivers a hydrogen evolution rate up to 1959 μmol·h–1·g–1 under visible light (λ > 420 nm), nearly 8 times higher than that of pristine g-C3N4/Pt (250 μmol·h–1·g–1). The results demonstrate the success of our dual-gas-phase activation strategy and the importance of rational dual-defect engineering for improving the photocatalytic activity of layered materials, not limited to g-C3N4.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN) with nitrogen vacancies was synthesized by a controlled thermal etching method in a semi-closed air-conditioning system. The defect-modified g-C3N4 shows an excellent photocatalytic performance demonstrated by water splitting under visible light irradiation. With proper heat-treatment durations such as 2 h (CN2) and 4 h (CN4) at 550 °C, the hydrogen production rates significantly increase to 100 μmol h−1 and 72 μmol h−1, which are 11 times and 8 times the rate of the pristine CN (8.8 μmol h−1) respectively. The excellent hydrogen production performance of nitrogen defect modified CN2 is due to the synergy effect of the decreased band gap, enlarged specific surface area and increased separation/migration efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers. This simple defect engineering method provides a good paradigm to improve the photocatalytic performance by tailoring the electronic and physical structures of g-C3N4.
