Abstract:In a dense crowd, the interactions between pedestrians will be predictable and frequent when the crowd density is rather high. Evidence shows that the macroscopic state of the crowd may be influenced by the physical interactions between individuals. However, the current assumptions about contact forces are too simple, so much so that they deviate from the true facts of crowd simulation. Therefore, a series of controlled experiments on the collision dynamics in a queue of pedestrians were conducted and the independent forces collected form five pressure sensors were combined to restore the complete successive collision process. The characteristics of the collision force pulse are described based on the experimental data, and the single collision force pulse resulting from the interactions between pedestrians approximately obeys the specific numerical relationships. Moreover, the collision phenomenon will transmit along the queue of pedestrians continuously and unidirectionally, resembling the domino effect. Hence, the collision dynamics models were established theoretically from the perspective of a wave equation with pedestrians as medium. These equations can be used to derive the impulse transmitted along the queue with reasonable parameters obtained by fitting the experimental data. The impulse transmitted from the pedestrian to others is usually not equal to that exerted on him during the collision. The additional portion mainly results from the body leaning forward, and the diminishing portion mainly results from the adjustment of the body. Moreover, the active hand contact may intensify the impulse transmitted among the crowd, and the impulse will keep growing as the collision transmits on the staircase compared to that on a flat surface.
