Abstract:•We construct the structural path analysis model of water footprint (WF).•Coastal provinces have more WFs, while underdeveloped provinces have less WFs.•The WFs of water-scarce provinces are mainly composed of external WFs (EWFs).•Inner-province Agriculture → Inner-province Household is the critical path of IWF.•Other provinces Agriculture → Inner-province Household is the critical path of EWF.
