Abstract:In this paper, we report distinct enhancement of surface-state emissions (SSEs) of colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) via coupling to localized plasmons (LPs) in Ag nanostructures. The roles of oleic acid (OA) ligand on QDs in the formation of Ag nanostructures and in the intense enhancement of SSEs of CdSe QDs are explored. We find that OA ligand on CdSe QDs plays a critical role in modifying the morphology of the contacted Ag, which consequently impacts the coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag. A systematic study of size effect of QDs on coupling of SSEs with LPs shows that as-deposited small Ag particles favorably enhance the SSEs of small-size CdSe QDs. The OA ligand on QDs yields better Ag crystallinity and clear corners during the annealing process; therefore, it promotes reshaping of small Ag particles into larger ones, favorable to enhance the SSEs of large-size CdSe QDs. The annealed QDs/Ag hybrid structures are more stable than the unannealed ones due to the loss of the OA ligand in the heating process. The selective coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag nanostructures allows feasible realization of microscale fluorescent color patterns. The approach of OA-assisted modification of plasmonic properties of Ag nanostructures provides a new route to synthesizing bright luminescence materials and devices that use colloidal QDs.
Synthesis and Characterization of Monodisperse CdSe Quantum Dots with Zinc Blende Structure

Abstract:Monodisperse CdSe quantum dots were synthesized by TOPO assisted reaction in nonaqueous solution.The samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy,X-ray powder diffraction,size distribution histograms,UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra.The results indicate that the monodisperse quantum dots exhibit zinc blende(cubic)diffraction patterns and high PL quantum yield.Moreover,the mechanism of formation of zinc blende structure was preliminarily discussed.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for the realization of future optoelectronic technologies, thanks to their size-tunable electronic and optical properties. Among various types of QDs, colloidal "giant" QDs (g-QDs, core/thick-shell) have been widely used in different applications, such as solar cells, light emitting devices, luminescent solar concentrators and photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production. However, g-QDs have a thick-shell which serves as a physical barrier for electron and hole transfer, leading to a slow charge transfer rate. In this work, we synthesized CdSe/CdSexS1-x/CdS core/shell/shell g-QDs with an intermediate CdSexS1-x alloyed layer. The presence of this interfacial layer largely improves the absorption of CdSe/CdS QDs, particularly in the 300-650 nm range. By engineering the interfacial layer, the holes can leak more into the CdS shell region compared to that of CdSe/CdS QDs. PEC devices based on alloyed g-QDs exhibit a 20% higher saturated photocurrent density (11 ± 0.5 mA cm-2) compared to CdSe/CdS QDs. In addition, after one-hour illumination (100 mW cm-2), the PEC cell based on alloyed g-QDs still exhibits a photocurrent density of 7.5 mA cm-2, maintaining 70% of its initial value. Such alloyed g-QDs are very promising for several emerging optoelectronic applications, where charge separation, transfer and transport play a critical role for the realization of high performance devices.

Abstract:With CdSe nanocrystals stabilized with very weak ligands (pyridine) as the starting materials, NMR techniques were applied to distinguish the bonded and free alkylamine ligands in an equilibrated adsorption/desorption system for the CdSe-amine nanocrystal-ligand pair. NMR and photoluminescence (PL) measurements were further correlated to identify the linear relationship between PL intensity and the surface ligand coverage of the amine-coated CdSe nanocrystals. For 3.5 nm CdSe nanocrystals and octylamine ligands, the chemical equilibrium constant (K) of the CdSe-amine nanocrystal-ligand adsorption/desorption process was found to be around 50-100, and the corresponding Delta(r)G degrees was calculated as 9.8-11.5 kJ/mol. With a proposed mathernatic method, the corresponding chemical kinetic constants for the desorption (k(d)) and adsorption (k(a)) processes were measured to be 0.01 s(-1) and 0.5 L mol(-1) s(-1), respectively. K, k(d), and k(a) obtained here are generally 2-4 magnitudes different from those estimated in literature. Analysis indicates that these constants are well consistent with the existing experimental observations.

Abstract:Band alignments of ZnO/CdSe nanocrystal quantum-dots (NQDs) heterojunctions are determined by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation source. To obtain ideal heterojunction interface, 1,2-ethanedithiol was used for CdSe NQDs as a ligand substitute. A type II band alignment of the ZnO/CdSe NQDs heterojunctions with changeable band offsets by varying the sizes of CdSe NQDs is concluded. The tunable band alignment of ZnO/CdSe NQDs heterojunctions is beneficial to the improvement of the design and fabrication of quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Physical approaches to tuning the luminescence color patterns of colloidal quantum dots

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and photoactivation (PA) effects are combined for the tuning of fluorescent colors of colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs). It is found that LSPR with QD emitters intensely enhances surface state emission, accompanied by a remarkable red-shift of fluorescent colors, while PA treatment with colloidal QDs leads to a distinct enhancement of band-edge emission, accompanied by a peak blue-shift. Furthermore, the LSPR effect on QD emitters can be continuously tuned by the PA process. The combination of the post-synthetic approaches allows feasible realization of multi-color patterns from one batch of QDs and the approaches can also be compatible with other micro-fabrication technologies of QD embossed fluorescent patterns, which undoubtedly provides a way of precisely tuning the colors of light-emitting materials and devices that use colloidal QDs.

Abstract:The impact of alkali metal carboxylates on the synthesis of colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) was investigated. Through a ligand removal experiment, we demonstrated that due to its high hydrophilic nature, sodium oleate dispersed in n-octadecene (ODE) with the formation of micelles with the help of other polar molecules, which resulted in reduced concentration of oleic acid and cadmium oleate both in the solution and on the surface of CQDs. These effects allow for control the size of CdSe CQDs in a wide range when synthesizing them by solely changing the amount of sodium oleate, under either cation-rich or anion-rich conditions. Additionally, enhanced ligand dynamics promote morphology transformation and suppress size deviation caused by different morphologies' existence in CQDs synthesis. Alkali metal oleate not only stabilized anion-rich CdSe CQDs but also results in highly crystallized wurtzite structure of CdSe CQDs when synthesizing them with excess anions. Furthermore, under anion-rich synthetic condition, anisotropic growth can be realized, leading to nanorods and nanoplatelets based on the alkali metal ions used. Given their outstanding effects and widely applicable synthetic conditions, alkali metal carboxylates offer new possibilities for designing efficient methods for synthesizing CQDs.

Fabrication of the CdSeTe Alloyed and CdSeTe/ZnS Core-Shell Quantum Dots

Abstract:The near-infrared (NIR)-emitting quantum dots (Qdots) have great potential for the use in biological imaging and diagnostic applications. In our work, a facile method was developed for the preparation of high quality, water-soluble, and NIR-emitting CdSeTe alloyed Qdots (A-Qdots) with L-cysteine (L-cys) as capping agent. By changing the size and the composition of the A-Qdots, the photoluminescent quantum yields (QYs) can reach as high as 53% and the emission color can be tuned between visible and NIR regions. Based on the fluorescence of the A-Qdots selectively quenched in the presence of Cu2+, the NIR-emitting CdSeTe A-Qdots were applied in ultrasensitive Cu2+ sensing. Furthermore, the prepared CdSeTe A-Qdots have been successfully applied for cell imaging, glucose and cholesterol assay, which demonstrates the great potential of the Qdots for biological applications. In order to improve the biocompatibility of the CdSeTe A-Qdots, new water-soluble CdSeTe/ZnS core-shell Qdots (CS-Qdots) with excellent NIR emission were synthesized in aqueous solution. The prepared CS-Qdots not only possessed high QYs but also exhibited excellent photobstability and favorable biocompatibility. Moreover, the CS-Qdots showed high electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) signal. These characteristics showed their potential applications in cell imaging and biosensing with high sensitivity.
Electronic structure and optical properties of CdSe/HgSe/CdSe quantum dot quantum well

Abstract:Core-shell structured CdSe/HgSe/CdSe quantum dot quantum well (QDQW) nanocrystals were synthesized and well controlled by a colloidal chemical method. The results of optical absorption studies show that with appropriate HgSe well thickness (from 0.9 nm to 0), it is possible to tailor the 1s-1s transition energy of QDQW nanocrystals from 1.8 to 2.1 eV. The enhancement and blue shift of photoluminescence peak was observed, which was attributed to the quantum confinement effect of carriers in HgSe well. The 1s-1s transition energies of QDQW nanocrystals have been estimated by the effective mass approximation method. The results are compared with the experimentally determined 1s-1s energies. It is shown that the general trend observed in the experiments is well reflected in the calculation.

Abstract:This work explored possibilities to obtain colloidal quantum dots (QDs) with ideal photoluminescence (PL) properties, i.e., monoexponential PL decay dynamics, unity PL quantum yield, ensemble PL spectrum identical to that at the single-dot level, single-dot PL nonblinking, and antibleaching. Using CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs as the model system, shell-epitaxy, ligand exchange, and shape conversion of the core/shell QDs were studied systematically to establish a strategy for reproducibly synthesizing QDs with the targeted properties. The key synthetic parameter during epitaxy was application of entropic ligands, i.e., mixed carboxylate ligands with different hydrocarbon chain length and/or structure. Well-controlled epitaxial shells with certain thickness (∼3-8 monolayers of the CdS shells) were found to be necessary to reach ideal photoluminescence properties, and the size of the core QDs was found to play a critical role in determining both photophysical and photochemical properties of the core/shell QDs. Effects of shape of the core QDs were unnoticeable, and shape of the core/shell QDs only affected photophysical properties quantitatively. Surface ligands, amines versus carboxylates, were important for photochemical properties (antiblinking and antibleaching) but barely affected photophysical properties as long as entropic ligands (mixed carboxylate ligands with distinguishable hydrocarbon chain lengths) were applied during epitaxy. Chemical environment (in polymer or in air), coupled with surface ligands, determined photochemical properties of the core/shell QDs with a given core size and shell thickness.
A Two-Step Synthetic Strategy Toward Monodisperse Colloidal Cdse and Cdse/Cds Core/Shell Nanocrystals

Abstract:CdSe magic-size clusters with close-shell surface and fixed molecular formula are well-known in the size range between similar to 1 and 3 nm. By applying high concentration of cadmium alkanoates as ligands, a conventional synthetic system for CdSe nanocrystals was tuned to discriminate completion from initiation of atomic flat facets. This resulted in similar to 4-13 nm CdSe nanocrystals with hexahedral shape terminated with low-index facets, namely three (100), one (110), and two (111) facets. These low-symmetry (C-s group with single mirror plane) yet monodisperse hexahedra were found to be persistent not only in a broad size range but also under typical synthetic temperatures for growth of both CdSe and CdS. Atomic motion on the surface of the nanocrystals under enhanced ligand dynamics initiated intraparticle ripening without activating interparticle ripening, which converted the hexahedral nanocrystals to monodisperse spherical ones. This new synthetic strategy rendered optimal color purity of photoluminescence (PL) of the CdSe and CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals, with the ensemble PL peak width comparable with that of a corresponding single dot.

Abstract:Abstract For their ultra-wide color gamut, high efficiency, robustness, and solution processability, Cd-based alloy semiconductor quantum dots (AQDs) continue to proliferate by driving innovations in the fields of optoelectronics, photovoltaics, multiplex bio-imaging, and cancer research. Herein, non-toxic, low-cost isopropyl alcohol vapor-based oxidative treatment protocol is developed and applied to tune the light emission spectrum of crystalline core–shell CdSe 1−x S x /ZnS quantum dots. As evidenced by the results of structural investigations, these AQDs when exposed to vapors produced ultrasonically from 10:1 isopropyl alcohol-to-water mix undergo an isotropic, diameter non-specific size reduction at the rate of ∼1.3 Å min −1 . Nonlinear time-dependent spectral shifts, revealed experimentally, are consistent with the results of the effective-mass approximation treatment. The emission yields are seen to undergo an initial drop, yet to plateau as the etch time increases. The study opens a door to a soft, top-down monotonic tailoring of the light emission characteristics and opto-electronic response of stoichiometrically- and hierarchically-complex core–shell constructs in technologically-viable group II–VI nano-semiconductors as well as AQD-based catalytic conversion of organic compounds.

Abstract:Multinary quantum dots (QDs), owing to the large degree of freedom in their structure and composition, have a wide tunability in their bandgap and show an increased indeterminacy and complexity in their optical properties. In this work, a facile microwave-assisted aqueous route using sodium citrate and thioglycolic acid (TGA) as dual stabilizer was utilized to synthesize Cu-In-S/ZnS (CIS/ZnS) core/shell QDs. The effects of the shell thickness, refluxing time, pH value, temperature, Cu/In ratio and stabilizer on the morphology and optical properties of the CIS/ZnS QDs have been systematically investigated. The results show that the morphology-controllable alloyed CIS/ZnS QDs with tunable emission from 533 nm to 666 nm and long PL lifetime can be obtained by varying the molar ratio of sodium citrate to TGA. The proposed microwave-assisted aqueous synthesis method for alloyed QDs is simple, rapid, with comparatively low reaction temperature. The as-prepared QDs with the size of 3.8 nm are promising materials for lighting and biological applications. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals of II-VI semiconductor materials has been refined in recent decades and their size dependent optoelectronic properties have been well established. Here we report a facile synthesis of CdSe-CdS core-shell heterostructures using a two-step hot injection process. Red-shifts in absorption and photoluminescence spectra show that the obtained quantum dots have quasi-type-II alignment of energy levels. The obtained nanocrystals have a heterostructure with a large and highly faceted tetrahedral CdS shell grown epitaxially over a spherical CdSe core. The obtained morphology as well as high resolution electron microscopy confirms that the tetrahedral shell have a zinc blende crystal structure. A phenomenological mechanism for the growth and morphology of the nanocrystals is discussed.

Abstract:Due to their unique optical properties, I-III-VI alloyed quantum dots (QDs) have attracted significant attention. By cationic alloying and composition adjusting, quaternary and quintuple alloyed QDs could be synthesized and the optical properties could be further investigated by adjusting the synthesis parameters. In this study, we synthesized CuZnGaSSe (CZGSSe) QDs using a one-pot method and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) could reach 72.2%. The effects of the capping ligands, the halogen ions in Zn precursors and the reaction temperatures were explored and the growth mechanism of the CZGSSe QDs was discussed. Finally, by adjusting the S/Se ratio and Cu/Ga ratio, the prepared QDs exhibited tunable emission wavelengths ranging from 469 nm to 599 nm. This study is of significance for researching the growth sequence and guiding the synthesis of efficient quintuple QDs.

Abstract:Spindle-liked ZnSe and Mn:ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) were formed via an optimized greener approach, which may be attributed to the amine ligands adhering asymmetrically to the crystal facets. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that the ZnSe and Mn: ZnSe QDs have a zinc blende cubic crystal structure. The crystallite size of ZnSe was calculated to be about 4 nm from the (1 1 1) peak width using the Scherrer equation, which was in agreement with the HRTEM findings. The fluorescence emission peak of as-prepared ZnSe and Mn: ZnSe QDs was 431 nm and 580 nm respectively. We investigated the effect of the reaction temperature, reflux time, precursor solvent, size of MnSe core and overcoating temperature of ZnSe layer on the optical properties of ZnSe and Mn: ZnSe QDs. It is shown that the precursor solvent plays a key role in the formation of the magic-sized QDs (MSQDs). And as a result, doped quantum dots (d-dots) showed a large Stokes shift and enhanced photoluminescence, and smaller size of the MnSe core and suitable overcoating temperature of ZnSe shell were identified as two key parameters for obtaining the high quality d-dots. Abstract:Achieving superior solar cell performance based on the colloidal nanocrystals remains challenging due to their complex surface composition. Much attention has been devoted to the development of effective surface modification strategies to enhance electronic coupling between the nanocrystals to promote charge carrier transport. Herein, we aim to attach benzenedithiol ligands onto the surface of CdSe nanocrystals in the "face-on" geometry to minimize the nanocrystal-nanocrystal or polymer-nanocrystal distance. Furthermore, the "electroactive" π-orbitals of the benzenedithiol are expected to further enhance the electronic coupling, which facilitates charge carrier dissociation and transport. The electron mobility of CdSe QD films was improved 20 times by tuning the ligand orientation, and high performance poly[2,6-(4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']-dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT):CdSe nanocrystal hybrid solar cells were also achieved, showing a highest power conversion efficiency of 4.18%. This research could open up a new pathway to improve further the performance of colloidal nanocrystal based solar cells.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) exhibit size-dependent optical properties, where both the absorption and fluorescence energy levels vary with QD size. However, this dependence results in a discontinuity of intrinsically accessible energy levels for the bandgap, posing challenges in achieving precise energy tuning within a specific range. Herein, we demonstrate emission energy control of QDs with identical absorption energy levels by manipulating the spatial arrangement of QDs within QD–polymer complexes through hydrophobic interactions. The phase behavior of the QD–polymer complexes was modulated by adjusting the mass fraction of hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks in the block copolymer, utilizing two types of amphiphilic block copolymers and varying temperatures. The QDs were spontaneously trapped within the hydrophobic region of the polymer template in water, resulting in spherical, cylindrical, and vesicle structures of QD–polymer complexes, corresponding to spherical, cylindrical, and layered assemblies of QDs, respectively. Depending on the QDs’ location within the QD–polymer complex, the surface area in contact with water varied, leading to different degrees of oxidation and, consequently, a change in the fluorescence energy level of QDs. This study introduces a novel method to fine tune the emission energy (<15 eV) of QDs by adjusting the polymer form factor without complicated procedures.

Abstract:Localization of exciton wavefunctions away from the inorganicorganic interface is proposed for synthesizing colloidal spheroidal quantum dots (QDs) with an ultranarrow photoluminescence (PL) peak width. This strategy is demonstrated by synthesizing uniform-alloy CdxZn1-xSe and CdxZn1-xSe/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell QDs. For blue-emitting QDs, the ensemble PL full width at halfmaximum (fwhm) reaches 10.2 nm and the corresponding single-dot PL fwhm is 5.2 nm. The ensemble and single-dot PL fwhm values for green-emitting QDs are 16.3 and 9.7 nm, respectively. These record-low PL fwhm values for spheroidal QDs are close to the requirements for ideal displays. To control the composition homogeneity, the synthetic scheme is separated into four consecutive steps, namely, nucleation of monodisperse CdSe core QDs, epitaxial growth of thickness-controlled CdSe/ZnSe core/shell QDs with a low degree of spontaneous alloying, Cu-catalyzed alloying for uniform-alloy QDs, and additional epitaxy of outer ZnSe and ZnS shells onto uniform-alloy CdxZn1-xSe QDs. Among all metal ions tested, copper ions are identified to be the best catalysts for forming uniform-alloy CdxZn1-xSe QDs, which can enter a QD rapidly to initiate alloying and effectively exit a QD after the alloying process under the experimentally feasible conditions.
