Abstract:The ever increasing space debris poses a great threat to the working spacecraft on orbit, and the active removal operations are urgently required. The motion of space debris, such as defunct satellites and rocket upper stages, would turn into tumbling states after years of freely floating in space accompanying with the perturbation torques from solar pressure, gravity gradient and residual angular momentum before failure. To minimize the collision risk during capture, a non-contact detumbling system made by a permanent magnet array is put forwarded to stabilize the target rotational motion before capturing. The structure of the permanent magnetic (PM) detumbling end effector is introduced and the characteristics of electromagnetic force are analyzed. The relative motion dynamic of the electromagnetic detumbling system is been built, and the simulation results show that the eddy current force could damp the target rotational motion in a reasonable time with a proper initial relative velocity. An experimental setup is designed to demonstrate the eddy current effect and measure the eddy current force at the same time. The results show that the eddy current thrust force of one hundred milllinewton could be generated by the rotational PM array at a separation distance of 0.1m.
