Abstract:Current potentiometric sensing methods are limited to detecting nitrate at parts-per-billion (sub-micromolar) concentrations, and there are no existing potentiometric chemical sensors with ultralow detection limits below the parts-per-trillion (picomolar) level. To address these challenges, we integrate interdigital graphene ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) with a nitrate ion-sensitive membrane (ISM). The work aims to maximize nitrate ion transport through the nitrate ISM, while achieving high device transconductance by evaluating graphene layer thickness, optimizing channel width-to-length ratio (RWL), and enlarging total sensing area. The captured nitrate ions by the nitrate ISM induce surface potential changes that are transduced into electrical signals by graphene, manifested as the Dirac point shifts. The device exhibits Nernst response behavior under ultralow concentrations, achieving a sensitivity of 28 mV/decade and establishing a record low limit of detection of 0.041 ppt (4.8 × 10-13 M). Additionally, the sensor showed a wide linear detection range from 0.1 ppt (1.2 × 10-12 M) to 100 ppm (1.2 × 10-3 M). Furthermore, successful detection of nitrate in tap and snow water was demonstrated with high accuracy, indicating promising applications to drinking water safety and environmental water quality control.

Abstract:An all-solid-state nitrate-selective electrode with the implementation of graphene as the ion-to-electron transducer was reported. The charge-transfer process was examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscope and the hydrophobic nature of the graphene film was characterized via the potentiometric water layer test. The analytical performance of the nitrate-selective electrode was investigated by the determination of nitrate in drinking water. The obtained results showed that graphene can significantly facilitate the ion-to-electron transducer and prevent the formation of water layer between the ion-selective membrane and the graphene layer. The fabricated nitrate-selective electrode displayed a Nernstian slope of 57.9mV per decade of nitrate concentration, a low detection limit of 3×10−5M and a rapid response time (within 10s) for concentration upon 10−4M. The determination of real samples indicated that the constructed nitrate-selective electrode was capable of monitoring nitrate in drinking water, providing a handy alternative for routine analysis.

Abstract:This paper reports a novel micro sensor which used self-assembled graphene microelectrode arrays to selectively detect nitrate solutions. Graphene microelectrode arrays were utilized to sensitively detect the change of ion density. Self-assembly technique provided an effective 3-dimensional platform for sensing applications. An ion selective ionophore film was deposited upon graphene surface to make the sensor selectively sensitive for nitrate ions. As a result, the self-assembled graphene microelectrode arrays showed superb sensing performance for pH with advantages of low cost and label free. After decorating nitrate ionophore film. the selective sensor demonstrated high sensitivity and reproducibility for nitrate ions. This simple, low-cost and selective sensor could lead to wide applications in environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Increasing food safety awareness in our daily life has called for the establishment of rapid toxic nitrite detection techniques. In this work, we reported on a facile, quick laser processing method for the preparation of N, O co doped porous graphene, which was patterned using a computer-controlled system to directly engrave a commercial polyimide (PI) tape, and subsequently used as an electrode for electrochemical nitrite detection. The laser-induced graphene (LIG) was characterized using various physical methods, and the electrochemical performance of the LIG sensing electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and chronoamperometry (CA). The designed electrode exhibited outstanding sensing ability toward nitrite oxidation. The peak current of the DPV curve had a good linear relationship with analyte concentrations ranging from 5 to 450 mu mol/L, and the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 0.8 mu mol/L (S/N = 3). None of the common cations and anions yielded a positive current response, demonstrating that the electrode showed superior selectivity for electrochemical nitrite recognition. Furthermore, we observed and elucidated the pH dependence of electrocatalytic activity, which was attributed to the synergy of the surface functional groups derived from N, O co-doped graphene. Owing to its fast response and anti-interference capacity, this new LIG electrode offers great potential as a nitrite electrochemical sensor for environmental applications.

Abstract:In this work, we firstly developed a laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode modified by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and glycine-modified nanocarbon (Gly-C), and used it to detect nitrite by linear scanning voltammetry. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of the electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle analysis. Our findings demonstrated that the electrocatalytic oxidation of nitrite can be enhanced by the successful loading of AuNPs, and Gly-C enhances electrode hydrophilicity and promotes nitrite adsorption capacity of the electrode surface. Under optimal conditions, the linear of the sensor is 7 - 700 & mu;g/L and 700 - 1050 & mu;g/L, and the detection limit is 0.84 & mu;g/L. The anti-interference, repeatability, and stability of this sensor are outstanding. Recovery rates of the sensor in the actual groundwater and tap water varied from 94 to 123 %, and the relative standard deviation was less than 6.06 %. Our findings offer a potentially effective method for on-site monitoring of nitrite in aquatic environments.

Abstract:Field-effect transistor (FET) sensors based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for detecting chemical species provide a number of distinct advantages, such as ultra-sensitivity, label-free, and real-time response. However, without a passivation layer, channel materials directly exposed to an ionic solution could generate multiple signals from ionic conduction through the solution droplet, doping effect, and gating effect. Therefore, a method that provides a passivation layer on the surface of rGO without degrading device performance will significantly improve device sensitivity, in which the conductivity changes solely with the gating effect. In this work, we report rGO FET sensor devices with Hg2+-dependent DNA as a probe and the use of an Al2O3 layer to separate analytes from conducting channel materials. The device shows good electronic stability, excellent lower detection limit (1nM), and high sensitivity for real-time detection of Hg2+ in an underwater environment. Our work shows that optimization of an rGO FET structure can provide significant performance enhancement and profound fundamental understanding for the sensor mechanism.
Real-time Electronic Sensor Based on Black Phosphorus/aunps/dtt Hybrid Structure: Application in Arsenic Detection

Abstract:Field-effect transistor (FET)-based sensors are now attracting increasing attention due to their high sensitivity, low-cost, convenient fabrication, and portability. Black phosphorus (BP) nanosheet, due to its unique structure and excellent electronic properties, becomes a promising candidate for high-performance sensing material in an FET sensor. Here, we report an FET sensor using hybrid structure of BP and dithiothreitol (DTT)-functionalized gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) for the detection of Arsenic (As) in water. The performance of the as-fabricated sensor is outstanding with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 1 nM, which is much lower than the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for As ions in drinking water (130 nM) advised by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The sensor also shows a rapid response (within 1-2 s) and good selectivity against other metal ions (e. g., Hg2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, etc.). The rapid, selective, sensitive and stable sensing performance suggests a strong potential of this sensor platform for in-situ detection of As in water, either as a standalone device or being assembled into existing water equipment to continuously monitor water pollutants. Abstract:Boron (B) doping plays a critical role in adjusting the electronic properties of carbon materials. In this work, B-doped porous graphene (B-PG) was successfully prepared by a simple strategy and used as an advanced electrode material for the detection of nitrite (NO2-) in food. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to characterize this B-PG. Due to the ideal doping of boron atoms, the material has good conductivity and exhibits excellent electrochemical catalytic performance. NO2- was used as the representative analytes to demonstrate the sensing performance of B-PG. It is found that the B-PG modified GCE exhibited a linear response over the concentration range from 3 mu M - 3 mM and 3 mM - 15 mM, with a detection limit of 1.1 mu M. The designed electrochemical sensor has good analytical performance, such as high sensitivity, good reproducibility and acceptable accuracy, and can be successfully applied to the accurate and precise detection of residual NO2- in food.

Abstract:We describe a highly sensitive and selective amperometric sensor for the determination of nitrite. A glassy carbon electrode was modified with a composite made from gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and sulfonated graphene (SG). The modified electrode displays excellent electrocatalytic activity in terms of nitrite oxidation by giving much higher peak currents (at even lower oxidation overpotential) than those found for the bare electrode, the AuNPs-modified electrode, and the SG-modified electrode. The sensor has a linear response in the 10 μM to 3.96 mM concentration range, a very good detection sensitivity (45.44 μA mM −1 ), and a lower detection limit of 0.2 μM of nitrite. Most common ions and many environmental organic pollutants do not interfere. The sensor was successfully applied to the determination of nitrite in water samples, and the results were found to be consistent with the values obtained by spectrophotometry. Abstract:An ultrasensitive and highly efficient assay for real-time monitoring of nitric oxide (NO) at single-cell level based on a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and iron-porphyrin-functionalized graphene (FGPCs) field-effect transistor (FET) biosensor is reported. A layer-to-layer assembly of RGO and FGPCs on a prefabricated FET sensor surface through π-π stacking interaction allowed superior electrical conductivity caused by RGO, and highly catalytic specificity induced by metalloporphyrin, ensuring the ultrasensitive and highly specific detection of NO. The results demonstrated that the RGO/FGPCs FET biosensor was capable of real-time monitoring of NO in the range from 1 pM to 100 nM with the limit of detection as low as 1 pM in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and 10 pM in the cell medium, respectively. Moreover, the developed biosensor could be used for real-time monitoring of NO released from human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) at single-cell level. Along with its miniaturized sizes, ultrasensitive characteristics, and fast response, the FET biosensor is promising as a new platform for potential biological and diagnostic applications.
Enabling Quick Response to Nitrogen Dioxide at Room Temperature and Limit of Detection to Ppb Level by Heavily n-Doped Graphene Hybrid Transistor

Abstract:Sensitive detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is of significance in many areas for health and environmental protections. In this work, we developed an efficient NO2 sensor that can respond within seconds at room temperature, and the limit of detection (LOD) is as low as 100 ppb. Coating cyano-substituted poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (CN-PPV) films on graphene (G) layers can dope G sheets effectively to a heavy n state. The influences of solution concentrations and annealing temperatures on the n-doping effect were investigated in detail. The CN-PPV–G transistors fabricated with the optimized parameters demonstrate active sensing abilities toward NO2. The n-doping state of CN-PPV–G is reduced dramatically by NO2, which is a strong p-doping compound. Upon exposure to 25 ppm of NO2, our CN-PPV–G sensors react in 10 s, indicating it is almost an immediate response. LOD is determined as low as 100 ppb. The ultrahigh responding speed and low LOD are not affected in dry air. Furthermore, cycling use of our sensors can be realized through simple annealing. The superior features shown by our CN-PPV–G sensors are highly desired in the applications of monitoring the level of NO2 in situ and setting immediate alarms. Our results also suggest that transfer curves of transistors can react very promptly to the stimulus of target gas and, thus, are very promising in the development of fast-response sensing devices although the response values may not reach maximum as a tradeoff.

Abstract:Meeting the increasing demand for sensors with high sensitivity, high selectivity, and rapid detection presents many challenges. In the last decade, electronic sensors based on field-effect transistors (FETs) have been widely studied due to their high sensitivity, rapid detection, and simple test procedure. Among these sensors, two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial-based FET sensors have been demonstrated with tremendous potential for the detection of a wide range of analytes which is attributed to the unique structural and electronic properties of 2D nanomaterials. This comprehensive review discusses the recent progress in graphene-, 2D transition metal dichalcogenide-, and 2D black phosphorus-based FET sensors, with an emphasis on rapid and low-concentration detection of gases, biomolecules, and water contaminants.

Abstract:Graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) sensors are an attractive analytical tool for the detection of water pollutants. Unfortunately, this application has been hindered by the sensitivity of such sensors to nonspecific disturbances caused by variations of environmental conditions. Incorporation of differential designs is a logical choice to address this issue, but this has been difficult for GFET sensors due to the impact of fabrication processes and material properties. This paper presents a differential GFET affinity sensor for the selective detection of water pollutants in the presence of nonspecific disturbances. This differential design allows for minimization of the effects of variations of environmental conditions on the measurement accuracy. In addition, to mitigate the impact of the fabrication process and material property variations, we introduce a compensation scheme for the individual sensing units of the sensor, so that such variations are accounted for in the compensation-based differential sensing method. We test the use of this differential sensor for the selective detection of the water pollutant 17β-estradiol in buffer and tap water. Consistent detection results can be obtained with and without interferences of pH variations, and in tap water where unknown interferences are present. These results demonstrate that the differential graphene affinity sensor is capable of effectively mitigating the effects of nonspecific interferences to enable selective water pollutant detection for water quality monitoring.
Facile fabrication of a graphene-based chemical sensor with ultrasensitivity for nitrobenzene

Abstract:Chemical sensors have a wide range of applications in a variety of industries, particularly for sensing volatile organic compounds. This work demonstrates the fabrication of a chemical sensor based on graphene deposited on Cu foils using low-pressure chemical vapor deposition, following its transfer on oxidized silicon through a wet etching method. Scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy of the transferred graphene were performed. A device was fabricated by simply connecting the strips of a Cu tape along the two opposite edges of graphene, which acted as a chemical sensor. The sensor was exposed to different analytes, namely acetone, propanol, benzyl chloride, nitrobenzene, carbon tetrachloride and acetic acid. A relative change in the resistance of the device was observed, which was attributed to the interaction of analytes with graphene as it changes charge concentrations in the graphene lattice. The fabricated sensor showed a notable sensitivity and response time for all analytes, particularly a sensitivity as high as 231.1 for nitrobenzene and a response time as short as 6.9 s for benzyl chloride. The sensor was also tested for analyte leakage from containers for domestic, laboratory and industrial applications.

Abstract:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets were self-assembled onto the surfaces of electrospun polymer nanofibers to form an ultrathin coating. These rGO/polymer composite nanofibers were used to fabricate nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensor. This sensor can be performed at room temperature, and it exhibited a high sensitivity of 1.03 ppm(-1) with excellent selectivity and good reversibility. Furthermore, the limit of detection was experimentally measured to be as low as 150 ppb, and this value is much lower than the threshold exposure limit proposed by American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (200 ppb).

Abstract:Accurate water content detection is crucial for optimizing chemical reactions, ensuring product quality in pharmaceutical manufacturing, and maintaining food safety. In this study, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene quantum dots (R-GQDs) were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method using o-phenylenediamine as the carbon source. The synthesis conditions, including reaction time, temperature, o-phenylenediamine concentration, and H2SO4/water ratio, were optimized using the Box-Behnken response surface methodology. The R-GQDs exhibited excellent fluorescence stability and distinct solvent-dependent characteristics, alongside a broad linear detection range and high sensitivity, making them highly suitable for dual-mode water content detection (colorimetric and fluorescent). To enhance the accuracy of visual detection, R-GQDs were incorporated into portable test strips with smartphone-assisted analysis, compensating for the human eye's limitations in distinguishing subtle color changes. The sensor's practical utility was validated through spiked recovery experiments in food samples, and the R-GQDs demonstrated good biocompatibility for in vivo imaging in shrimp. These findings highlight a novel strategy for developing portable, real-time water content sensors with potential applications in both portable detection systems and biological imaging.

Abstract:Potassium (K) doping plays a critical role in adjusting the electronic properties of carbon materials. In this work, K-doped graphene, as a new electrode material, was used to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the simultaneous determination of nitrite (NO2−) and sulfite (SO32−) under neutral conditions. The advantages of K-doped graphene/GCE are illustrated from comparison with the graphene/GCE, K-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)/GCE, MWNTs/GCE, graphite/GCE and bare/GCE for electrocatalytic and sensing applications. It exhibited a linear response over the concentration range from 0.5μM to 3.9mM, with a detection limit of 0.2μM (S/N=3) for NO2− and a corresponding linear range of 2.5μM to 10.3mM, with a detection limit of 1.0μM (S/N=3) for SO32−. The proposed sensor could be successfully applied in the simultaneous detection of residual NO2− and SO32− in polluted water accurately and precisely.
