Facile Synthesis of Amorphous Ternary Metal Borides-Reduced Graphene Oxide Hybrid with Superior Oxygen Evolution Activity

Abstract:Metal borides represent an emerging family of advanced electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we present a fast and simple method of synthesizing iron-doped amorphous nickel boride on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets. The hybrid exhibits outstanding OER performance and stability in prolonged OER operation. In 1.0 M KOH, only 230 mV is required to afford a current density of 15 mA cm-2 with a small Tafel slope of 50 mV dec-1. DFT calculations lead to a suggestion that the in situ formation of MO xH y during electrochemical activation acts as active sites for water oxidation. The superior OER activity of the as-prepared catalyst is attributed to (i) its unique amorphous structure to allow abundant active sites, (ii) synergistic effect of constituents, and (iii) strong coupling of active material and highly conductive rGO. This work not only provides new perspectives to design a highly effective material for OER but also opens a promising avenue to tailor the electrochemical properties of metal borides, which could be extended to other materials for energy storage and conversion technologies.

Abstract:By the combination of theoretical calculations and experimental validations, it is demonstrated that hexagonal boron nitride, albeit often being considered inert, can generate boron‐active radicals at defective sites by forming van der Waals heterogeneous structures with graphene‐containing point vacancies, leading to a substantial electron delocalization and charge transfer, indicating a superior oxygen evolution reaction catalytic activity. Developing highly efficient earth‐abundant alternatives to traditional noble metal catalysts is essential for clean and sustainable energy‐conversion and energy‐storage technologies, yet still challenging in limited active sites and weak resistance to electrochemical corrosion. Herein, density‐functional theory calculations demonstrate that hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN), albeit often being considered inert, can generate boron‐active radicals at defective sites by forming heterogeneous structures with graphene‐containing point vacancies, leading to a substantial electron delocalization and charge transfer, indicating a superior catalytic activity. Experimentally, the van der Waals heterostructure is rationally designed with h‐BN nanosheets (BNNs) anchored on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as strongly coupled composite catalysts. Despite the poor conductivity in BN and lower catalytic activity in rGO, the created heterostructures demonstrate unexpected, improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with excellent stability in alkaline electrolyte. Qualitative analysis of the valence band offset and theoretical calculation reveal that the formation of heterostructures can significantly drive the electron transfer between C and B atoms near the vacancies across the interface and cause a half‐metallic property of BN, decreasing the free energy barrier of four‐electron OER kinetics. Herein, the synthetic schemes of h‐BNNs are guided as highly active metal‐free OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal-free carbon-based materials are considered to be one of the most promising alternatives to precious metal Pt-based electrocatalysts. However, the electrocatalytic activity of heteroatom-modulated carbon rarely reaches the level of metal-based electrocatalysts. Here, electron-rich carbon and abundant pyridinic-N adjacent to C vacancies decorated with carbon nanosheets (E-NC-V) are synthesized and used as the host for boosting efficient oxygen reduction reaction. Rich pyridinic-N structures adjacent to C vacancies work in synergy with electron-rich carbon, which promotes the sharp decrease of |Delta G(O*)|, resulting in the balanced adsorption and dissociation of oxygen intermediates, and thus activating O(sic)O. This can be attributed to the abundant vacancies and d-p orbital hybridization between Zn and N/C. The E-NC-V catalyst drives the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via a 4e(-) transfer-dominated pathway with a half-wave potential of 0.87 V versus RHE in the alkaline solution, even superior to Pt/C. The assembled Al-air battery exhibits a high peak power density of 113 mW cm(-2). This promising strategy sheds light on the design and fabrication of robust, rich-density, and high-performance active sites for the ORR. The work is expected to inspire future work on the role of electronic structure modulation and defect engineering for enhanced reaction kinetics.

Abstract:Graphene oxide, with sufficient oxygen-containing groups, is integrated with electronically conductive carbon nanotubes to be explored as an efficient metal-free catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction. Preliminary theoretical calculations with the density functional theory method indicate that the existence of graphene oxide is favorable for the adsorption and subsequent four-electron reduction reactions of O-2. Furthermore, this oxygen-enriched hybrid material was tested as a cathode in aprotic/aqueous hybrid electrolyte Li-air batteries. The hybrid material exhibited a very low overpotential (the voltage gap at 0.1 mA cm(-2) is only 0.17 V) and better electrocatalytic performance owing to abundant oxygen containing groups and its excellent electroconductivity. These experimental and theoretical demonstrations should provide an important mechanistic insight into carbon-based metal-free catalysts in fuel cells and metal-air battery applications. We believe that the demonstrations shown in this paper provide a promising strategy to investigate highly efficient metal-free catalysts for advanced energy devices.

Abstract:We developed a facile method to synthesize nanocomposites of cobalt loaded nitrogen doped graphene (Co-N-rGO), acting as a highly active non-precious metal catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In alkaline media, the Co-N-rGO catalyst displayed a low overpotential, larger current density, better durability, and methanol tolerance ability toward ORR. Kinetic parameter analysis showed a high selectivity to an apparent four-electron transfer process on the Co-N-rGO catalyst for ORR with an average electron transfer number of 3.97. The excellent activity of the Co-N-rGO catalyst (0.44% Co) may result from its well-constructed porosity with high specific surface area and a synergistic effect between the N-rGO and cobalt oxide species.

Abstract:Developing high performance and low cost electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is pivotal for the commercial viability of fuel cells. In this context, great effort has been devoted to developing non-precious metal catalysts or even metal-free catalysts for ORR. Here, we successfully prepared nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (NRGO) with high surface area via KOH activation, followed by thermal treatment under ammonia gas for the incorporation of nitrogen into the carbon lattice. The NRGO catalyst exhibited high electrocatalytic activity towards ORR as compared to commercial Pt/C catalyst, suggesting that it might be possible to develop NRGO into a cost-effective and highly active catalyst, as an alternative to the Pt-based catalysts.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key bottleneck in the performance of fuel cells. The rational design of efficient and inexpensive ORR electrocatalysts is a common goal for the large-scale application of fuel cells. Herein, by means of density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that two-dimensional (2D) biphenylene (BPN) with doping B/N are metal-free single-atom catalyst candidates with the overpotentials comparable to those noble metal benchmark catalysts. The B/N doping effectively modulates the charge distribution in BPN sheets, promotes the electron transfer between doped BPN and the oxygen-containing intermediates, which results in enhancing their binding strength, and facilitating their electrochemical ORR catalytic activity. This work not only provides metal-free single-atom catalysts for ORR, but also promotes BPN nanomaterials for single-atom catalysts development and practical applications.

Abstract:The development of carbon-based metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for large-scale commercial applications of fuel cells. Using density functional theory computations, we explore the potentials of a novel boron-doped graphene nanoribbon (BGNR) as an excellent electrocatalyst for ORR in an acidic environment. The plausible reaction pathways are studied, and the optimal reaction mechanism is identified. Our results show that ORR at BGNR prefers to proceed through a four-electron OOH pathway. The overpotential for ORR on BGNR is calculated to be 0.38 V, which is lower than that on the Pt-based catalysts (0.45 V). For comparison, we study the catalytic activity of the single B-doped graphene nanoribbon (S-BGNR) and B-doped graphene (BG) for ORR. Remarkably, the para-B distribution on BGNR leads to high affinity for O2 adsorption and excellent catalytic activity, which is superior to S-BGNR and BG. Abstract:Herein, we for the first time demonstrate the synthesis of exfoliated C4N nanosheets via a top–down approach and exploit their use as a new class of organic polymeric catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The obtained C4N nanosheets are semi–conductive with a small band gap of 1.41 eV and contain abundant pyrazine–nitrogen moieties uniformly distributed throughout C4N. Density function theory calculations reveal that the intramolecular charge transfer induced by pyrazine–nitrogen in C4N enables effective charge redistribution to activate the conjugated structure and facilitate the oxygen adsorption, while the exfoliated sheet–like C4N formation renders improved electrochemical active surface area and results in high exposure of active sites. As a result, despite the bulk C4N is not active, the sheet–like C4N yield markedly improved ORR performance, even on a par with the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Our recent findings not only enrich the family members of two–dimensional conjugated polymer nanosheets but also open up new opportunity to explore new metal–free organic polymeric materials for efficient oxygen reduction catalysis and beyond.

Abstract:Development of efficient, low-cost and stable electrocatalysts as the alternative to platinum for the oxygen reduction reaction is of significance for many important electrochemical devices, such as fuel cells, metal–air batteries and chlor-alkali electrolysers. Here we report a highly active nitrogen-doped, carbon-based, metal-free oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst, prepared by a hard-templating synthesis, for which nitrogen-enriched aromatic polymers and colloidal silica are used as precursor and template, respectively, followed by ammonia activation. Our protocol allows for the simultaneous optimization of both porous structures and surface functionalities of nitrogen-doped carbons. Accordingly, the prepared catalysts show the highest oxygen reduction reaction activity (half-wave potential of 0.85 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode with a low loading of 0.1 mg cm −2 ) in alkaline media among all reported metal-free catalysts. Significantly, when used for constructing the air electrode of zinc–air battery, our metal-free catalyst outperforms the state-of the-art platinum-based catalyst.

Abstract:Bamboo structured nitrogen doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been helically unzipped, and nitrogen doped graphene oxide nanoribbons (CNx-GONRs) with a multifaceted microstructure have been obtained. CNx-GONRs have then been codoped with nitrogen and boron by simultaneous thermal annealing in ammonia and boron oxide atmospheres, respectively. The effects of the codoping time and temperature on the concentration of the dopants and their functional groups have been extensively investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicate that pyridinic and BC3 are the main nitrogen and boron functional groups, respectively, in the codoped samples. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) properties of the samples have been measured in an alkaline electrolyte and compared with the state-of-the-art Pt/C (20%) electrocatalyst. The results show that the nitrogen/boron codoped graphene nanoribbons with helically unzipped structures (CNx/CBx-GNRs) can compete with the Pt/C (20%) electrocatalyst in all of the key ORR properties: onset potential, exchange current density, four electron pathway selectivity, kinetic current density, and stability. The development of such graphene nanoribbon-based electrocatalyst could be a harbinger of precious metal-free carbon-based nanomaterials for ORR applications.

Abstract:Cost-effective production of metal-free catalysts for the oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR), to supersede Pt-based catalysts, is challenging. Here, a three-dimensional nanocatalyst was prepared by compounding multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with easily modified and doped carbon dots (CDs) as sources of B and N. The catalyst has high conductivity and a large specific surface area similar to the MWCNTs, allowing exposure of many CDs with rich edge active sites and enhancing electron transfer. The catalyst exhibits excellent ORR performance, with 0.92 V of Eonset vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The E1/2 value exhibits a reduction of 50 mV compared with that of Pt/C (0.85 V) with a limited current density of 5.95 mA cm−2. The enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to the synergy of pyridine N and BC3. This work describes a simple and economical strategy for metal-free catalysts, and promotes the development of such catalysts for metal-air batteries and fuel cells.

Abstract:The reversible oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are proton-coupled/decoupled four-electron reactions requiring multi-type active centers for catalysis. Herein, porous nanosheets codoped with a carbon-encapsulated FeNi alloy, metal-N species, and N defects (FeNi-N/PCN) were synthesized through a facile and environmentally friendly molten NaCl template method. The obtained FeNi-N/PCN achieved impressive performances as an oxygen electrocatalyst for the ORR and OER in alkaline (E1/2 of 0.88 VRHE, Ej=10 of 1.57 VRHE) and acidic electrolytes (E1/2 of 0.78 VRHE, Ej=10 of 1.76 VRHE). Furthermore, this FeNi-N/PCN catalyst achieved an impressive power density of 224 mW cm−2 and a specific capacity of 691 mA h g−1 in a Zn-air battery, which are 1.34- and 1.20-fold higher than that of the Pt and RuO2 catalysts, respectively. These outstanding performances are due to the layered carbon nanosheet with multi-type active sites, including a carbon-encapsulated FeNi alloy, N defects, and metal-N sites (M-Nx).

Abstract:The heteroatom doped carbon-based materials have a promising application in fuel cell electrocatalysis. However, current metal-free catalyst always suffers drawbacks of slow dynamic rate and limited energy conversion efficiency. Here, nitrogen-doped graphene (N-G) with layered structure has been successfully in situ synthesized via magnesium reduction of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) at 800 °C. Due to its excellent structure and properties including high BET surface area (437 m2 g−1), plenty of graphitized nitrogen and pyridine nitrogen on the surface, and remarkable conductivity, the obtained 10N-G-800 demonstrates a prominent catalytic efficiency in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via mainly four-electron pathway. In addition, an obviously better long-term catalytic stability and methanol tolerance than commercial platinum-carbon counterparts are also determined for our 10N-G-800 catalyst. The 10N-G-800 exhibits high power density (203 mW cm−2), long-term durability and high rate capacity as the air electrode catalyst of Zn-air battery. This article provides a novel and efficient approach for the design of metal-free ORR catalyst.

Abstract:A simple method for the mechanochemical synthesis of an effective metal-free electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction was demonstrated. A nitrogen-doped carbon material was obtained by grinding a mixture of graphene oxide and melamine in a planetary ball mill. The resulting material was characterized by XPS, EPR, and Raman and IR spectroscopy. The nitrogen concentration on the N-bmGO surface was 5.5 at.%. The nitrogen-enriched graphene material (NbmGO has half-wave potential of −0.175/−0.09 V and was shown to possess high activity as an electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction. The electrocatalytic activity of NbmGO can be associated with a high concentration of active sites for the adsorption of oxygen molecules on its surface. The high current retention (93% for 12 h) after continuous polarization demonstrates the excellent long-term stability of NbmGO.

Abstract:Sheet-like carbon-nitrogen (CN x )/graphene composites with a high content of nitrogen (x ⩽ 0.15) was prepared by the carbonization of polypyrrole (PPy)/reduced-graphene-oxide (rGO) composite at 600–800°C. We used rGO instead of graphene oxide (GO) sheets as a template and a substrate to immobilize PPy since the PPy/GO composite agglomerates easily because of the dehydration of excess oxygen-containing groups on the GO sheets during the drying process. The dried PPy/rGO intermediate and its derived CN x /graphene products retain their high dispersion and loose-powder features. The as-prepared CN x /graphene composites have a total nitrogen content of about 10 at% and their nitrogen state is mainly of pyridinic and graphitic type. CN x /graphene composites exhibit excellent performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in terms of electrocatalytic activity, stability and immunity towards methanol crossover and CO poisoning, suggesting their potential as metal-free electrocatalysts for the ORR.
