Abstract:The trace amount of water in organic solvents can affect the progress of chemical reactions, which will adversely affect chemical production in many industries, resulting in a doubling of costs. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) with abundant polar groups were synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The prepared CDs showed superior dispersibility and fluorescence performance compared to the CDs that have been reported for the detection of water content in organic solvents. It can realize the fluorescence detection of trace water in several water-soluble organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide, ethanol and methanol with wide linear range (0 %-100 %) and high sensitivity. This will provide a powerful tool for the rapid detection of water content in organic solvents in chemical production.

Abstract:In this work, a type of carbon dots (CDs) which can be well dispersed in organic solvents but precipitated in neutral aqueous solution was synthesized by using one-step hydrothermal heating treatment of o-phenylenediamine in H2SO4 solution. Although the emissions of the CDs in different organic solvents are excitation independent, solvatochromism is observed for the CDs since the emission wavelength is red shifted with an increase in the polarity of solvents. The optical properties suggest that the emission of the CDs is controlled by molecular state. According to aggregation induced quenching effect and solvatochromism caused by an increase in the solvent polarity with the content of H2O increasing, detection methods of H2O in the organic solvents were developed by using the CDs as a probe. The spiked H2O in acetone and methanol could be recovered in the range of 98.2% to 101.7%, which indicates that the as-proposed method has a high potential for the determination of H2O in organic solvents.
Solvatochromism of high-efficient and long-wavelength emissive carbon dots for wide-range water-sensing in organic solvents

Abstract:A novel solvent-dependent fluorescent CDs (R-CDs) were prepared by solvothermal method from neutral red and urea precursors. The multicolor emissions ranging from blue to red from R-CDs could be achieved by tuning the solvents polarity. The highest quantum yield of 61.11% is achieved in R-CDs acetone solution with bright yellow emission at 565 nm. The solvent-dependent fluorescence is ascribed to the variation of CDs’ band-gap and surface potential, which are induced by polarity. R-CDs were used as a quantitative fluorescent sensor for detecting water in different solvents. An excellent linear relationship between water content (0–90%) and emission intensity is found in ethanol, methanol, acetonitrile, isopropanol, DMSO, and acetone. The limit of detection (LOD) is 1.55%, the recoveries range from 95% and 110%, and the relative standard deviations (RSD) are 0.15%–5.43%. All results indicate that our R-CDs for water sensing exhibit good linear relationship and accuracy.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have been regarded as novel heavy-metal-free fluorescent materials because of their prominent optical features. In this work, one type of amphipathic CDs is prepared by facile one-step solvothermal treatment of p-Phenylenediamine. The obtained CDs own numerous surface function groups which endow them prominent dispersibility in different solvents. Absorption, steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy have been adopted to investigate the mutual influence between the surface groups and different solvent molecules on the optical properties of the CDs. Strong solvatochromic behavior with tunable emission from blue to green and strict excitation-independent emission characteristic can be observed when the as-prepared CDs are dissolved in different solvents, suggesting their feasible sensing applications as an alternative of solvatochromic dye molecules. Furthermore, highly selective detection of Cu2+ ions using the as-synthesized CDs as sensing probes is achieved. It is expected that the investigated CDs with solvent-dependent optical properties as well as selective Cu2+ detection may have broad application prospects in bioimaging and biodetecting.

Abstract:In this work, hydroquinone, o-phenylenediamine and terephthalic acid were used as reaction precursors to synthesize carbon dots (h-CDs) by a one-step solvothermal method. Our experimental results demonstrated the as-prepared functionalized h-CDs have not only excellent optical properties but also interestingly chemical and physical properties. The emission peak of the obtained h-CDs shifts gradually towards the red region with increasing water content in organic solvent. This was visually manifest as a change in color. Therefore, the h-CDs can be used as the colorimetric fluorescent probe to detect water content in organic solvents. Moreover, it is also particularly sensitive to Cu2+ and thus could be used as fluorescent probe to detect Cu2+ content in water with detection limit of 1.8 × 10−4 mmol. This investigation provides a new way for the development of carbon dots (CDs) as multifunctional fluorescent probes.

Abstract:In this work, efficient orange emissive N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were synthesized through a facile one-step solvothermal route using 1,4-phenylene diisocyanate as the only raw precursor. The as-prepared N-CDs exhibited strict excitation independent luminescence with a maximum emission peak at 581 nm. The absolute photoluminescence quantum yield was up to 38%. A reasonable formation process of N-CDs was explored in detail. Interestingly, the N-CDs was sensitive to water and thus, could be exploited as an excellent fluorescent probe directly for quantitative detection of water in organic solvents. Moreover, various orange-emitting N-CDs/polymer composites were achieved by simply incorporating the N-CDs into different polymer matrices. The N-CDs could be better uniformly dispersed in polyurethane (PU) matrix through the in situ polymerization technique, and the emission intensity of N-CDs/PU composite films could be linearly modulated by changing the N-CDs concentration. These investigations broaden promising application potentials of CDs in sensor and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity are of paramount importance in surface chemistry. In this study, a solvent-controlled synthesis of hydrophilic and hydrophobic carbon dots (CDs) was prepared via a solvothermal process using pentafluorobenzyl alcohol as the carbon source in either deionized water or N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF) medium. By simply varying the reaction solvent to control the doping of nitrogen and fluorine elements, the hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity of the CDs could be regulated. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic CDs showed blue and green light under a UV lamp, respectively. Besides, we regulated the volume ratio of water/DMF (1 : 2, 1 : 1 and 2 : 1) in the reaction solvent to prepare amphiphilic CDs and further studied their hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the sensitivity of hydrophobic CDs to water was investigated. In water detection, the photoluminescent intensity of the blue peak and green peak showed high linearity within the water content of 4–80% and 10–80%, respectively (limit of detection = 0.08%, v/v, in DMF).

Abstract:Carbon nanodots, the luminescent nanoparticles of carbon with size restriction below 10 nm, have attracted inordinate attention in materials science due to their widespread applications in optoelectronic and biological fields. Low toxicity and facile synthesis pathways render them favourites in the above-mentioned areas in the context of green chemistry. This work presents fine applications of p -phenylenediamine-derived carbon nanodots (PD-CNDs) achieved via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. Adequate characterization using X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic and microscopic studies confirmed spherical particles with an average particle size of 2.8 nm, functionalised with amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups. The carbon framework was functionalised with pyridinic and pyrrolic nitrogens. Upon 365 nm UV light illumination, an aqueous dispersion of PD-CNDs showed red-orange fluorescence. Detailed spectral analysis using UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy identified edge states and surface groups as luminescent centres, with a significant contribution arising from the latter. The investigation conducted using a collection of solvents, categorized into polar and nonpolar, indicated the potential of the system for applications based on its solvatochromic nature. The feature enabled the determination of different polarity parameters of the solvents, as well as dielectric constants of solvents and solvent mixtures, with considerable accuracy. The system was potent for predicting the composition of a given pair of solvents. The service of the system is also extended for moisture sensing in organic solvents within an error percentage < 1. High quantum yield values (0.61) combined with solvent composition-dependent optical features ensure broader applications of the system to probe solvent interactions.

Abstract:N, Cl-doped carbon dots (N, Cl-CDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method from rhodamine B (RhB) and ethylenediamine (EDA). The resulting N, Cl-CDs exhibited fascinating solvent dependence and strict excitation independence. As the polarity of the solvent increased (from tetrahydrofuran (THF) to water), the emission spectrum of N, Cl-CDs was redshifted and the fluorescence efficiency decreased, which were attributed to hydrogen bond-induced aggregation. Taking advantage of these attributes, the N, Cl-CDs were used as suitable probes for fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode detection of water in THF. The linear relationship was 0.5–100% water with the detection limit down to 0.093%. Moreover, the sensing platform was converted into a paper-based sensor for handy, real-time, and visible humidity sensing. N, Cl-CDs/PVA films were fabricated and realized continuously tunable solid-state fluorescence, further expanding their practical application.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted widespread attention because of their excellent properties and various preparation methods. Solvothermal methods have the advantages of simple operations, high product yields, and low costs, which have become the most commonly used methods to synthesize CDs. Understanding the effects of the solvent on the properties of CDs will allow the advantages of CDs to be fully utilized and promote their applications. This review summarizes the effects of reaction solvents on the morphology and properties of CDs, as well as the regulation mechanism of the dispersion solvent on the optical properties of CDs. On this basis, the applications of solvent-engineered CDs in sensing, imaging, optoelectronics and photocatalysis are introduced. Furthermore, we discuss the existing problems and prospects of solvent-engineered CDs.

A novel fluorescent sensor for water in organic solvents based on dynamic quenching of carbon quantum dots

Abstract:In this study, a simple and straightforward method has been developed to prepare carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with ultrahigh absolute fluorescence quantum yields (96.9%). The fluorescence peak of CQDs remains the same (565 nm) due to their homogeneous surface structure, when the excitation wavelength was changed from 300 nm to 500 nm. It was found that the as-prepared CQDs exhibit excellent fluorescent properties in organic solvents, but could be quenched by water. As a result, the as-prepared CQDs are promising fluorescent probes for the detection of water in organic solvents without any modification. To our knowledge, this is the first time that CQDs have been adopted as water-sensitive fluorescent probes in organic solvents (ethanol, tetrahydrofuran, and 1,4-dioxane) with a limit of detection as low as 0.01% (V/V). What is more, the dynamic quenching mechanism of the CQDs–water system was clarified by UV-vis absorption spectrometry and time-resolved fluorescence spectrometry.

Novel solution and solid-state emissive long-wavelength carbon dots for water sensing and white LED applications

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are among the most popular nanomaterials due to their remarkable fluorescent and electronic properties, as well as their good biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. Currently, CDs with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) are relatively rare and have become a significant research hotspot. This is because most conventional CDs suffer from severe quenching in a solid state. Herein, novel CDs with both solution and solid-state emissions were obtained using a facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis. Specifically, the CDs exhibit yellow solvent-dependent fluorescence in solution state (λem = 580 nm) and red AIE emission in solid state (λem = 640 nm). CDs powder is utilized as a red phosphor for light-emitting diode (LED). The resulting fabricated white LEDs (WLEDs) demonstrate good performance metrics, including a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 89.5, Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) of 3876 K, and commission Internationale d'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.350, 0.331). Furthermore, the solvent-dependent phenomenon observed in AIE-CDs can be exploited to apply their solution as a highly sensitive fluorescence sensor for quantitatively detecting amounts of water in various organic solvents. The method offers both high accuracy and sensitivity, with R2 values varying from 0.853 to 0.994 and a low detection limit ranging from 0.296 to 3.23 % across a wide linear range. This inherent versatility makes the CDs suitable for a wide range of applications, including sensing and LED devices.
One-pot Synthesis of High-performance Green-emitting Carbon Dots for Cd2+ Sensing and Anti-counterfeiting Applications

Abstract:This study presents a facile one-pot solvothermal synthesis of high-performance green fluorescent carbon dots (G-CDs) using o-phenylenediamine and ethylenediamine as precursors. The G-CDs show excellent optical, temporal, and chemical stability. Notably, they exhibit the highest quantum yield of 24.2% in ethanol and a strong green emission peaking at 546¬Ýnm under 440‚Äì490¬Ýnm excitation. In addition, G-CDs have outstanding salt resistance and multi-solvent compatibility. Due to its bright photoluminescence, G-CDs can be used as a secure ink for anti-counterfeiting. More remarkably, Cd 2+ ions can efficiently quench the fluorescence of G-CDs with a detection limit of 0.152 ¬μmol/L, enabling accurate quantification of Cd 2+ in water systems. The simple synthesis of high-performance G-CDs expands their applicability in sensing and bioimaging.

Abstract:Selective and sensitive water content measurement in organic solvents is extremely significant for both industrial use and laboratory preparation. Carbon nanodots are promising carbon nanomaterials with unique and novel properties and thus have drawn growing attention. However, the hydrothermal approach for the preparation of carbon dots always uses water as solvent, and consequently, the development of carbon dots from biomass materials for fluorescence detection of water content remains unexplored. Here, carbon dots were prepared from gallic acid via a cheap and facile one-step method. The as-prepared carbon dots present excellent sensitivity and selectivity toward water content and exhibits good linear relationships with water content in range of 0–10%. The carbon dots demonstrated a strong antioxidation capacity and colour-reaction of Fe3+ like gallic acid. The carbon dots also showed solid-state lighting.

Abstract:The conventional hydrothermal bottom-up synthesis for preparing carbon dots (CDs) usually requires stringent conditions and high energy consumption, whereas the quantum yield (QY) of CDs remains at a relatively low level. Herein, CDs exhibiting strong blue photoluminescence (PL) with an ultra-high QY (up to 94.4%) were prepared via a simple one-step microwave-assisted route using citric acid (CA) and o-phenylenediamine (o-PD) as precursors. The operating conditions, including reaction time, solvent species, amount of solvent, and precursor molar ratio, were optimized. The CDs synthesized within 3.5 min of microwave heating in ethylene glycol (EG) at a CA-to-PD molar ratio of 5:1 exhibited the highest QY (94.4%). A synergistic PL mechanism of the molecule state and carbon core state emissive centers was proposed according to the characterization results of CDs. Moreover, the proof-to-concept H2O2 fluorescent detection performances of the prepared CDs confirmed their great application potential as probe materials. Through directly mixing the CD products and H2O2, a strong PL response could be rapidly detected after merely 1 min, and the detection limit was calculated to be as low as 8.6 nM. Besides, the CDs exhibited high biocompatibility, making them suitable for in-vivo detection of H2O2. Therefore, this work provides a novel and efficient approach for synthesis of ultra-high QY CDs that can be directly applied in biological detection.

Abstract:The presence of trace water impurities in organic solvents can significantly influence chemical reactions and product quality; thus, the accurate detection of water content in these solvents is a critical requirement for industrial applications. Accordingly, an eco-friendly, effective, and economical sensor for detecting trace quantities of miscible water in organic solvents is required for industrial applications. In this study, we synthesized biomass-derived multi-atom-doped carbon dots (MACDs) as fluorescent probes and employed them for the detection of trace amounts of water impurities in several water-miscible organic solvents. The MACDs exhibited stable dual-color fluorescence emission under ultraviolet light irradiation and red and blue emissions in organic solvents and water. The fluorescence quantum yield was approximately 11 %, which indicates an excited intraparticle proton transfer response due to an increase in the water content within a wide response range from 0 % to 100 % (v/v) in organic solvents. The intensity of the red emission signal at 670 nm gradually decreased with an increase in the water content in the organic solvent. The MACDs could detect water with an instant response time of 55 s, a high sensitivity, and low limits of detection of 0.08 %, 1.36 %, 0.03 %, 0.04 %, 0.12 %, and 0.05 % (v/v) in ethanol, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, methanol, isopropanol, and tetrahydrofuran, respectively. Hence, biomass-derived MACDs can serve as efficient and eco-friendly water sensors in organic solvents.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have garnered extensive interest in basic physical chemistry as well as in biomedical applications due to their low cost, good biocompatibility, and great aqueous solubility. However, the synthesis of multi-functional carbon dots has always been a challenge for researchers. Here, we synthesized novel CDs with a high quantum yield of 28.2% through the straightforward hydrothermal method using Diaminomaleonitrile and Boc-D-2, 3-diaminopropionic acid. The size, chemical functional group, and photophysical properties of the CDs were characterized by TEM, FTIR, XPS, UV, and fluorescence. It was demonstrated in this study that the prepared CDs have a high quantum yield, excellent photostability, and low cytotoxicity. Regarding the highly water-soluble property of CDs, they were proven to possess selective and sensitive behavior against Cu2+ ions (linear range = 0-9 μM and limit of detection = 1.34 μM). Moreover, the CDs were utilized in fluorescent ink in anti-counterfeiting measures. Because of their low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, the CDs were also successfully utilized in cell imaging. Therefore, the as-prepared CDs have great potential in fluorescence sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and bioimaging.
