Abstract:The nucleation process of iron-exchanged zeolite Fe-ZSM-5, from the assembly of distorted tetrahedrally coordinated iron species and silicate rings in the precursor to the final Fe-ZSM-5 crystals, as well as variations in the coordination environment of iron, were studied by UV resonance Raman spectroscopy and complementary techniques.The entire sequence of crystallization events of Fe-ZSM-5 was monitored by UV Raman spectroscopy in combination with HRTEM, UV/Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns, and periodic DFT calculations. Fe-ZSM-5 was synthesized by an organic-free method to avoid signal interference from the organic template in Raman spectra. Framework iron atoms with resonance Raman bands at 516, 1115, and 1165 cm(-1), and a Raman band at 1016 cm(-1) are detected for Fe-ZSM-5. In the early stage of Fe-ZSM-5 synthesis, the precursor contains iron atoms in distorted tetrahedral coordination and five- and six-membered silicate rings. Nucleation by aggregation of the precursor species was monitored by UV Raman spectroscopy based on the resonance Raman effect, and confirmed by periodic DFT calculations. Evolution of iron species on the surface and in the bulk phase was monitored by UV Raman spectroscopy with excitation at 244 and 325 nm, as well as HRTEM. Nucleation takes place first in the core of the amorphous particles, and crystalline nuclei with Fe-ZSM-5 structure are formed in the core by consuming the amorphous shell. Finally the amorphous particles are completely transformed into Fe-ZSM-5 crystals.

Abstract:Zeolites have many applications in the petrochemical and fine chemical industry and their functionalization does expand the spectrum of potentials. However, the integration of functional nanocrystals into zeolite frameworks with controlled size, dispersion, and crystallization behavior still remains a significant challenge. Here, a new synthesis of magnetic functioned ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts via a CoFe2O4 nanocrystal mediated crystallization strategy is reported. It is found that high crystallinity of CoFe2O4 nanocrystals results in a well-dispersed encapsulation of them into a single-crystal of ZSM-5 due to non-further-grown nanocrystals during the fast ZSM-5 growth. On the contrary, low crystallinity of CoFe2O4 nanocrystals leads to the polycrystalline zeolite growth due to the secondary growth of nanocrystals accompanied by the zeolite crystallization and large lattice mismatch between them. The successful encapsulation of small CoFe2O4 nanocrystals (approximate to 4 nm) into single crystals lies on the preattachment of them into solid silica gel. During the growth of ZSM-5 crystals, no secondary growth of nanocrystals happens and its motion is restricted. The encapsulation of magnetic CoFe2O4 nanocrystals not only endows magnetic function into zeolites for the first time, but also does not impact catalytic performance of ZSM-5 in acetalization of cyclohexanone with methanol, which is highly promising in catalytic industries.

Abstract:A facile vapor-assisted conversion strategy has been developed to prepare mechanically robust spherical ferrierite zeolite, in which millimeter-sized commercial silica spheres doped with Na and Al were utilized as the precursor and cheap ethylenediamine (EDA) aqueous solution as the liquid phase. Characterization results demonstrated that the shape of the spheres can be well maintained after crystallization, and their interior is solid with compact crystal intergrowth. The ferrierite content in the resultant spheres can reach as high as 100%. More interestingly, the as-synthesized ferrierite spheres are Na+-free, and proton-form product can be directly obtained after simple calcination. The crystallization process of spherical ferrierite and the influence factors on the synthesis were investigated. It was revealed that control of the Na amount on the spherical precursor was critical for the crystallization, and a Na/Si ratio in the range of 0.10–0.13 facilitated the achievement of binder-free ferrierite spheres.

Abstract:UV-Raman and NMR spectroscopy, combined with other techniques, have been used to characterize crystallization of zeolite A. In situ UV-Raman spectroscopy shows that the starting gel for crystallization of zeolite A contains a lot of four-ring (4R) building units and the appearance of six-ring (6R) building blocks is the signal for crystal formation. Si-29 NMR spectroscopy results suggest that the starting gel is double four-ring (D4R) rich and during crystallization of zeolite A both alpha and beta cages appear. Al-27 NMR spectroscopy results indicate the absence of Al (2Si) species in the starting gel, suggesting the absence of single 4R building units in the starting gel. Furthermore, composition analysis of both solid and liquid samples shows that the solid rather than liquid phase predominates for the crystallization of zeolite A. Therefore, it is proposed that the crystallization of zeolite A mainly occurs in the solid phase by self-assembly or rearrangement starting from the zeolite building units mainly consisting of D4R. The essential role of D4R is directly confirmed by successful conversion from a solution of D4R to zeolite A in the presence of NaCl, and the importance of solid phase is reasonably demonstrated by the successful synthesis of zeolite A from a dry aluminosilicate gel. By considering that the solid phase has a major contribution to crystallization, a novel route was designed to synthesizing zeolite A from the raw materials water glass (Na2SiO3 in aqueous solution) and NaAlO2, without additional water and NaOH; this route not only simplifies synthetic procedures, but reduces water consumption.

Abstract:Mesocrystal zeolite with well-defined morphology owns mesoporous channels and single crystal characteristics, which could promote diffusion efficiency, stability and catalytic activity. Thus, we performed the controllable synthesis of ZSM-5 mesocrystal without special additives and complex methods. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) showed diffraction spots regardless of crystallization time, which indicated the well oriented feature of synthesized ZSM-5 zeolites. The crystallization process was further investigated. The oriented particle attachment (OPA) effectively guided the synthesis process of mesocrystals, which followed the nonclassical crystallization mechanism. The crystallinity curve exhibited valley-like shape, which manifested that the crystallization pathway went through three stages: fast precipitation, deconstruction and reorganization. The plausible formation mechanism was proposed, which might be useful for the fabrication of ZSM-5 mesocrystal. The prepared zeolites showed superior catalytic performance in aldol condensation reaction between benzaldehyde and 2-hydroxyacetophenone, obtaining 93% of the conversion.

Abstract:Nanosized zeolites with larger external surface area and decreased diffusion pathway provide many potential opportunities in adsorption, diffusion, and catalytic applications. Herein, we report a designer synthesis of ultra-fine Fe-LTL zeolite nanocrystals under very mild synthesis conditions. We prepared Fe-LTL zeolite nanocrystals synthesized using L precursor. The precursor is aging at room temperature to obtain zeolite L nuclei. In order to investigate more details of Fe-LTL zeolite nanocrystals, various characterizations including X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, confirm the tetrahedral Fe3+ species in the zeolite framework. Besides, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) indicate that the average particle size of Fe-LTL zeolite crystals is approximately 30 nm. Thus, ultra-fine Fe-LTL zeolite with large external surface area and shorter diffusion pathway to the active sites might have great potential in the near future.

Abstract:It is of great significance to develop a novel strategy to synthesize hollow zeolite without using mesoporogens due to its extremely short diffusion length. Ferric nitrate as a common iron source and structure direction agent has been used for synthesizing Fe-doped zeolite. However, the effect of ferric nitrate on the morphology of zeolite has not yet been elaborated. Here, we successfully synthesized hollow MFI zeolite with a framework iron-rich surface by using ferric nitrate as an iron source and seed-assistant strategy. It is the first time to propose that inorganic iron has the hollow structure-directing effect. Herein, by comparatively investigated the effect of iron content on the structure and evolution process of hollow zeolite, a novel crystallization mechanism has been proposed based on the competitive relationship between crystallization and dissolution rates. When the Si/Fe ratio reaches 25, the internal dissolution rate of seeds is faster than the surface crystallization rate of zeolite, the hollow structures are acquired. The obtained Fe-doped hollow zeolite exhibits superior catalytic performance for the reaction of phenol degradation. In this reaction, the higher effectiveness factor (η) close to 1 of Fe-doped hollow zeolite confirmed by calculations indicates its superior mass transferability.

Abstract:Interzeolite transformation (IZT) has been used to produce zeolite with novel structure and composition. How-ever, the complicated interactions between synthesis parameters and the resultant zeolites remained ambiguous. Herein, we synthesized zeolite SSZ-13 via an IZT strategy by using coal fly ash-derived analcime as parent zeolite. The effects of feeding H2O/SiO2, OH-/SiO2, and SiO2/Al2O3 ratios on the crystallization of zeolite SSZ-13 were examined. The crystallinity, pore structure, building units, and chemical environment of the products were investigated by XRD, SEM, XRF, N2 adsorption-desorption, FT-IR, and NMR, respectively. Zeolite SSZ-13 with high crystallinity and regular pore structure can be obtained under feeding H2O/SiO2 ratios of 17.5-25, OH-/SiO2 ratios of 0.2-0.6, and Al2O3/SiO2 ratios of 30-40. The absence of external water limited the mass transfer between reactants. While excessive water lessened the driving force for synthesizing zeolite SSZ-13 with regular structure. Small amounts of OH- ions triggered the dissociation of zeolite analcime. But high concentrations of OH- ions blocked the condensation of Si reactants and nucleation of zeolite SSZ-13. Increasing SiO2/Al2O3 ratio boosted the nucleation frequency. Insufficient contents of external Si species delayed nucleation and formed amorphous aluminosilicate impurities. The superfluous SiO2/Al2O3 ratio caused the overgrowth of zeolite SSZ-13 with irregular structures. Our findings benefited in understanding the interaction among synthesis parameters and the crystallization mechanism of IZT. It also gained new strategies for synthesizing high-silica zeolite using Al-rich natural and industrial aluminosilicate solid wastes.
Directional design and synthesis of high-yield hollow Fe-MFI zeolite encapsulating ultra-small Fe2O3 nanoparticles by using mother liquid

Abstract:How to directionally design the hollow zeolite via a green route is of great significance. Here, we successfully synthesized the hollow Fe-silicate-1 encapsulated ultra-small Fe2O3 nanoparticles (2.5 nm) with higher yield (85.2%) by mother liquid than traditional dissolution-recrystallization for the first time, which was achieved by precisely regulating the number and distribution of defects in zeolite and cleverly utilizing the TPAOH and nuclei in mother liquor. The effects of synthetic temperature, synthetic period and addition amount of parent zeolite on the formation of hollow zeolite have been investigated and the effect of synthetic conditions on the defects in parent zeolite has been also firstly quantified. The corresponding formation mechanism has been proposed. The abundant inner defects provided by the zeolite synthesized at 130 °C for 1 day and large amount of TPAOH remaining in mother liquid are conducive to the formation of hollow zeolite. Meanwhile, both parent zeolite and nuclei (4-, 5-member rings and structure units) in mother liquid obtained at 130 °C play the crucial roles in enhancing the zeolite yield. Notably, Fe2O3 nanoparticles could decompose into small fragments by the interaction with nuclei in mother liquid. Partial ultra-small Fe2O3 nanoparticles would be encapsulated in cavity and the rest could be inserted in the zeolite framework, which is significantly different from the conventional dissolution-recrystallization mechanism. The obtained encapsulated catalyst shows the superior catalytic performance and stability in phenol and tetracycline degradation reactions.

Abstract:Whereas one-dimensional, 10-membered ring zeolites are typically used forhydroisomerization, Fe3+-containing SSZ-70 (Fe-SSZ-70) shows remarkable isomerizationselectivity for a zeolite containing 12- and partially blocked 14-membered rings, in addition to10-membered rings. Fe-SSZ-70 was compared to Al3+-containing SSZ-70 (Al-SSZ-70) inconstraint index andn-decane hydrocracking tests. Fe-SSZ-70 exhibited a 74% total isomeryield (64% yield of monobranched isomers and 10% cracking yield) at 85% conversioncompared to 49% total isomer yield (41% yield of monobranched isomers and 36% crackingyield) for Al-SSZ-70 at the same conversion. The selectivity to isomerization is attributed tothe weaker acid strength of Fe-SSZ-70 over Al-SSZ-70. Fe-SSZ-70 was directly synthesizedwith Fe3+isomorphously substituted in tetrahedral positions. The coordination environmentof the Fe3+was characterized using Mo??ssbauer, electron paramagnetic resonance, and diffusereflectance UV-vis spectroscopies. The physicochemical properties were further probed withinductively coupled plasma atomic emissionspectroscopy, temperature-programmeddesorption of isopropylamine, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. The Fe3+was tetrahedrally coordinated in the as-madematerials and became partially octahedrally coordinated upon calcination; enough Fe3+remained in the framework after calcinationfor Fe-SSZ-70 to remain catalytically active.
A Novel Method for Synthesis of Mesoporous ZSM-5 from Iron Ore Tailings

Abstract:Mesoporous ZSM-5 was prepared from iron ore tailings (IOT) using a two-step process. Mesoporous MCM-41 was first synthesized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as mesoporous template and IOT as silica source. The CTAB in the as-synthesized MCM-41 was used as the mesoporogen to produce the mesoporous ZSM-5, by recrystallizing the amorphous walls of MCM-41 with tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) as the structure-directing agent via solid-phase conversion. To evaluate the textural properties of mesoporous ZSM-5, the as-synthesized samples were characterized using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, 29Si, 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption. The results show that phase separation between the surfactant and zeolite crystals was avoided in the solid-phase conversion process, which transforms the as-synthesized MCM-41 to mesoporous zeolite. Therefore, the synthetic route presented herein provides a novel method for the synthesis of mesoporous ZSM-5 from IOT.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of FER zeolite using commercially available 4-(aminomethyl)pyridine as organic structure-directing agent(OSDA). FER zeolites were prepared in mixtures with SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios in a narrow range and the resultant products possessed a typical flake-shaped morphology. The crystallization of FER zeolite was tracked in order to better understand the formation mechanism and the products obtained at different crystallization time were systematically characterized using multiple techniques. It showed that a majority of Si atoms and nearly all the Al atoms transformed into the solid phase during the hydrothermal synthesis. The rearrangement of inorganic species gave rise to zeolitic 5-membered rings(5-MRs) and 6-membered rings(6-MRs). Consequently, FER zeolite crystals were formed by the consumption of amorphous bulky gel/solid matrix. Tracking the synthesis process of FER can help.

Abstract:Much more attention has been paid to zeolite nanocrystals due to their use as catalysts and zeolite membranes as well as composites and hierarchical structures. Recently, zeolite nanocrystals of several structures have been successfully obtained, but rational synthesis of these zeolite nanocrystals is still challenging. Here, we report a theoretical prediction to synthesize zeolite nanocrystals from classical equations. According to the new equation, we finally obtained ultrafine zeolite L nanocrystals in accordance with the theoretical prediction. The smallest zeolite L we synthesized exhibits the crystals with a [100] length of 18 +/- 5 nm and a [001] width of 8 +/- 2 nm. After loading Pt species (0.5 wt %), this zeolite L supported Pt catalyst is very active and selective for the formation of isomers and cracking products in the region of 260-280 and 320-340 degrees C in n-dodecane hydroisomerization, showing adjustable catalytic properties by temperature control over one catalyst in the same bed reactor. The new equation in this work might offer a good opportunity for rational synthesis of expanded zeolite nanocrystals in the near future.
Synthesis and characterization of a single phase zeolite A using coal fly ash

Abstract:Zeolitization of coal fly ash (CFA) provides a potential alternative for creating high-added-value products from this hazardous solid waste. In this work, a single phase zeolite A with high crystallinity was successfully synthesized from CFA via the alkali fusion hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, N-2 physisorption, and solid-state MAS NMR spectra were applied to characterize as-synthesized zeolites. Results indicated that the type and purity of zeolite were closely related to the synthesis conditions and parameters. A well-defined cubic shape of zeolite A with a specific surface area of 43.7 m(2) g(-1) was obtained at a low temperature of 75 degrees C during hydrothermal treatment for 18 h. The ammonium cation exchange capacity (CEC) test showed an impressive value of 232.2 mmol 100 g(-1) over prepared zeolite A, which was about 22 times that of the original CFA and close to commercial zeolite A. These results pave the way for the exploitation and utilization of the CFA.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate a novel and efficient route for fast crystallization of MFI zeolites of silicalite-1 and ZSM-5 with enhanced silica condensation in the presence of CO2-in-water microemulsions. Compared to the conventional synthesis method, this new technique needs a very short time for the crystallization of MFI zeolites (4–8h) in the presence of compressed CO2. Furthermore, the synthesis of MFI zeolites containing mesoporosity (mesoporous MFI zeolites) under compressed CO2 condition does not require any organotemplate, which is of great economic importance to industrial application. Interestingly, ZSM-5 synthesized in the presence of compressed CO2 possessed uniform chain-like crystal morphology, while silicalite-1 synthesized in the presence of compressed CO2 exhibited monodispersed crystals as characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We have extended the CO2-in-water microemulsions route to synthesize other zeolites such as TS-1, Beta and Y. This newly developed method opens a new avenue for the fast synthesis of template-free mesoporous zeolites.
Understanding Of The Dissolution-Crystallization Fabrication Strategy Towards Macro/Microporous Zsm-5 Single Crystals

Abstract:In this study, detailed investigations about a novel dissolution-crystallization synthetic route for the fabrication of hierarchically macro/microporous ZSM-5 single crystals were conducted. During the fabrication, pre-prepared mesoporous aluminosilicate spheres (MASS) acted not only as raw materials but also as quasi scaffold templates simultaneously to construct additional macropores. Factors like the amount of alkali sodium hydroxide (NaOH), crystallization temperature and Si/Al ratios of MASS could affect the successful fabrication of such hierarchical zeolites via varying either the dissolution behaviors of precursors or the crystallization of zeolite crystals. Generally, only with suitable amounts of alkali NaOH that matched the Si/Al ratios of precursors and at appropriate crystallization temperature could the balance between the dissolution and crystallization of MASS precursors be achieved and thus the intracrystalline macropores be constructed. Owing to the introduction of rich intracrystalline macropores, the diffusional properties of the hierarchical ZSM-5 crystals were significantly enhanced, which has also been well proved through the toluene adsorption experiment with an intelligent gravimetric analyzer. Thus, with a similar Zn-modification, all the three hierarchical samples with different Si/Al ratios exhibited a much longer lifetime and higher aromatics selectivity in the MTA reactions than the conventional microporous sample.

Abstract:The aluminosilicate zeolite ZSM-43 (where ZSM = Zeolite Socony Mobil) was first synthesized more than 3 decades ago, but its chemical structure remained unsolved because of its poor crystallinity and small crystal size. Here we present optimization of the ZSM-43 synthesis using a high-throughput approach and subsequent structure determination by the combination of electron crystallographic methods and powder X-ray diffraction. The synthesis required the use of a combination of both inorganic (Cs+ and K+) and organic (choline) structure-directing agents. High-throughput synthesis enabled a screening of the synthesis conditions, which made it possible to optimize the synthesis, despite its complexity, in order to obtain a material with significantly improved crystallinity. When both rotation electron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging techniques are applied, the structure of ZSM-43 could be determined. The structure of ZSM-43 is a new zeolite framework type and possesses a unique two-dimensional channel system limited by 8-ring channels ZSM-43 is stable upon calcination, and sorption measurements show that the material is suitable for adsorption of carbon dioxide as well as methane.

Abstract:ZSM-5 zeolite has good hydrothermal stability and is widely used in fields such as hydrocarbon catalytic cracking and nitrogen oxide removal. In this study, a simple crystal seed solution assisted method was developed for the synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite without template from solid waste. The perlite tailings are not suitable for traditional perlite industrial production due to their small particle size. It was used as the main silicon source and the sole aluminum source to synthesis ZSM-5 zeolite. The effects of synthesis conditions, such as SiO2/Al2O3, Na2O/SiO2 and H2O/SiO2 molar ratios, on the properties of the products were investigated, and the best preparation conditions were optimized. The crystallization mechanism of the crystal seed solution assisted method to synthesis ZSM-5 zeolite from the perlite tailings was explored. In addition, the Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst was prepared by copper ion exchange method, and its performance of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx was studied. The experimental results showed that the product ZSM-5 zeolite has a high degree of crystallization and typical hexagonal pyramid morphology. The as-synthesized ZSM-5 zeolite had a large specific surface area, and it had both micropores and mesopores. The as-synthesized Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst had a wide denitrification activity window of 230-500 degrees C (denitrification efficiency of more than 90%) and N2 selectivity was over 96% in the temperature range of 100-540 degrees C. The crystal seed solution induced crystallization strategy can be used to prepare zeolites catalysts with high silica-alumina ratio from pearlite waste by one-step method. This method has a good industry application prospect due to simple steps and lower cost.
