Abstract:We report an unprecedented assembling performance of amide-containing, homo-structured poly(N-alkylacrylamide)s, through which they can assemble into discrete spherical particles with size ranging from tens of nanometres to several micrometres. For a specific polymer, a facile control over topology and scale of assembled structures can be accomplished via solvent conditions. Assembling using appropriate solvent gives rise to capsule-like assemblies. The molecular structure of polymers, such as the side chain chemistry and topology display striking impact on the size and morphology of resulting assemblies. These polymers might function as novel model systems for investigating complex functions performed by amide moieties in proteins, while this assembling offers a simple, facile but powerful and cost-effective manufacturing route for nano- or microstructured materials that may find great potential in diverse applications varying from cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, to biotechnology.
Hierarchical self-assembly of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane end-capped stimuli-responsive polymer: from single micelle to complex micelle.

Abstract:Responsive polymeric micelles have been widely studied because of their potential use in nanocontainers and nanocarriers. In this study, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) end-capped poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (POSS-PDMAEMA), a stimuli-responsive organic-inorganic hybrid polymer, was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using POSS-Br as a macroinitiator. The self-assembly behaviors of POSS-PDMAEMA in aqueous solution were studied by fluorescence probe, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed two self-assembly processes of POSS-PDMAEMA. First they self-assembled into a single micelle with the POSS molecules forming a crystal core and the PDMAEMA chains stretching as a corona. Then the single micelles, as building blocks, were able to reversibly form a hierarchical micelle-on-micelle structure (complex micelle) under external stimuli.

Abstract:In the field of materials science, one of the current challenges is to organize nanoparticles with various sizes, geometries and compositions into specific structures for constructing functional materials and devices. In this research, the self-assembly of the monotailed single-chain nanoparticles with different charge densities was investigated. Poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (PDMAEMA-b-PS) was synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, and amphiphilic monotailed PDMAEMA single-chain nanoparticles were prepared by intramolecular cross-linking of PDMAEMA blocks. The cross-linking degree was controlled at about 20%. The surface charge densities on the single-chain nanoparticles were controlled by reactions of the single-chain nanoparticles with varying amounts of iodomethane. The surface charge density has a significant influence on the selfassembly of the monotailed single-chain nanoparticles. The monotailed single-chain nanoparticles made from PDMAEMA74-b-PS100 self-assemble into spherical micelles in aqueous solutions, and the average size of the micelles increases with the charge density. With an increase in the charge density, the morphology of the aggregates self-assembled by the monotailed single-chain nanoparticles changes from spherical micelles to vesicles, and to a mixture of worm-like cylinders and vesicles. In a cyclohexane-THF mixture, the monotailed single-chain nanoparticles made from PDMAEMA74-b-PS297 self-assemble into bunchy micelles, or a mixture of vesicles and large compound vesicles, depending on the charge densities.

Abstract:ABCD star quaterpolymers acquired by precision synthesis may provide us with insights into self-assembly due to their fused architectures of different arm segments and a central core. Considering the crucial role of external stimuli in smart materials, the aims of this study are the facile synthesis of a pH/redox-responsive 4-arm miktoarm star and the study of its stimuli-dependent aggregation behaviors. A click reaction between azide/bromine-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polystyrene (PEG-b-PSt) and alkyne/disulfide-functionalized poly(e-caprolactone)-block-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PCL-b-PtBA) and subsequent selective hydrolysis were used to synthesize the target star with bromomethyl and disulfide functionalities in the core and a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) segment. The PEG-PSt-PCL-PAA star can self-assemble into nanocapsules with hollow caves; the sizes and morphologies of these assemblies are dependent on pH and reductive stimuli due to stimuli-tunable destabilization and reassembly. By virtue of polyion and hydrogen bonding complexation using a partly quaternized copolymer, the nanocapsules can be further converted into versatile coaggregates such as compound vesicles and micelles, multicompartment vesicles, and hyperbranched micelles. Our research affords a robust method to synthesize core-functionalized stimuli-labile multicomponent miktoarm stars; these stimuli-responsive nanocapsules hold great promise in smart biomedical and interfacial materials.

Abstract:A novel and facile method was developed for morphological controlling of self-assemblies prepared by Crystallization induced self-assembly of crystalline-coil copolymer depending on the combination effect of crystallization and micellization. The morphological evolution of the self-assemblies of alternating poly(p-dioxanone)-b/ock-poly(ethylene glycol) (PPDO PEG) multiblock copolymer prepared by different solvent mixing methods in aqueous solution were investigated. "Chrysanthemum"-like and "star anise"-like self-assemblies were obtained at different rates of solvent mixing. The results suggested gradually change in solvent quality (slowly dropping water into DMF solution) leaded to a hierarchical micellization-crystallization process of core-forming PPDO blocks, and flake-like particles were formed at the initial stage of crystallization. Meanwhile, crystallization induced micellization process occurred when solvent quality changed drastically. Shuttle-like particles, which have much smaller size than those of flake-like particles, were formed at the initial stage of crystallization When quickly injecting water into DMF solution of the copolymer. Therefore, owing to the different changing rate of solvent quality, which may result in different combination effect of crystallization and micellization during self-assembly of the copolymer, PPDO PEG self-assemblies with different hierarchical morphology in nano scale could be obtained.

Abstract:Control of polymer assemblies in solution is of great importance to determine the properties and applications of these polymer nanostructures. We report a novel co-self-assembly strategy to control the self-assembly outcomes of a micelle-forming amphiphilic block copolymer (BCP) of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate] (PTMSPMA), PEO114-b-PTMSPMA228. With a reactive and hydrophobic additive tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), the assembly nanostructures of PEO114-b-PTMSPMA228 are tunable. The swelling of the PTMSPMA block by hydrophobic TEOS increases the hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic ratio that enables a continuous morphological evolution from spherical micelles to vesicles and eventually to large compound vesicles. TEOS that co-hydrolyzes with the PTMSPMA block can further stabilize and fix these hybrid nanostructures. Abstract:Amphiphilic polymers can self-assemble into various nanostructures in solution, which can find applications in many fields such as nanotechnology, drug delivery, and template synthesis. Herein, we report the controlled self-assembly and dual stimuli-responsive nanostructure transition of a class of three-arm branched amphiphilic polymers (AzoFcPEO) containing ferrocene (Fc) and azobenzene (Azo) moieties in aqueous solution. These amphiphilic polymers were synthesized by an esterification reaction of a variety of polyethylene oxide methyl ethers (Me-PEO) with 3-(6-ferrocenyhexyloxyl)-5-(6-azobenzenehexyloxy) benzoic acid. Both the isomerization of Azo and redox of Fc moieties can respectively change the amphiphilicity of these polymers to different degrees. Consequently, these amphiphilic polymers in aqueous solution can self-assemble into various nanostructures, such as spherical micelle, worm-like micelle, spherical compound micelle, rod-like compound micelle and vesicle dependent on the PEO molecular weight, applied stimuli, and polymer concentration. This work can offer tremendous possibilities not only for the fundamental science of the controlled self-assembly but also for establishing a suitable method for regulating the nanostructures of amphiphilic polymers in aqueous solution.

Abstract:A novel POSS-containing methacrylate monomer (HEMAPOSS) was fabricated by extending the side chain between polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) unit and methacrylate group, which can efficiently decrease the steric hindrance in free-radical polymerization of POSS-methacrylate monomer. POSS-containing homopolymers (PHEMAPOSS) with a higher degree of polymerization (DP) can be prepared using HEMAPOSS monomer via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. PHEMAPOSS was further used as the macro-RAFT agent to construct a series of amphiphilic POSS-containing poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers, PHEMAPOSS-b-PDMAEMA. PHEMAPOSS-b-PDMAEMA block copolymers can self-assemble into a plethora of morphologies ranging from irregular assembled aggregates to core-shell spheres and further from complex spheres (pearl-necklace-liked structure) to large compound vesicles. The thermo-and pH-responsive behaviors of the micelles were also investigated by dynamic laser scattering, UV spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM. Abstract:Two triarmed organicinorganic hybrid materials based on carboxylic acid-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (APOSS) with/without PS linkers are designed and synthesized (tri-PS-APOSS and tri-APOSS). They can both self-assemble into hollow spherical nanostructures in water/organic mixed solvents, as confirmed by light scattering and TEM techniques, yet they possess completely different mechanisms and driving forces. With the PS linkers, the hybrid forms bilayer vesicles similar to surfactants; while without the PS linkers, the hybrid behaves like hydrophilic macroions and assembles into single-layered, vesicle-like "blackberry"-type structure. Consequently, the trend of the assembly size in response to the change of the solvent polarity is different for the two scenarios. This work shows a simple, universal approach of controlling the mechanism and product of the self-assembly process via minor adjustment of the organic-inorganic hybrid structures.

Abstract:Peptide self-assembling materials have recently emerged as one of the most promising biomaterials. In this study, we synthesized three amphipathic cyclopeptides (CPs1-3) with systematically modified side chains to control the morphologies of self-assembly. Owing to the varying modifications of the side chains, various micro/nanostructures were achieved because of different driving forces. The obtained morphologies were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Apart from hydrogen bond interactions for CPs, CP1 self-assembles into spindle-like aggregates with an average diameter of 70 nm and a length of 300 nm owing to the salt-bridge interactions in a neutral medium. CP2 can form micro/nanotubes with the diameters ranging from 750 nm to 2 mm via the hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions between the cyclopeptide ring and the alkyl chain. While CP3 forms solid nanospheres with an average diameter of 516 nm through aromatic-aromatic pi-pi interactions. This approach can lead to the fabrication of new functional supramolecular assemblies and materials and broaden the insights for the mechanism of the self-assembly.

Abstract:It is centrally important for self-assembly research to construct new building blocks and attain new functionalities. We made some progress in these two topics in 2013. Anisotropic particles are new building blocks for self-assembly, which greatly enrich the scope of self-assembly and provide a new toolbox to construct highly ordered and complex self-assemblies. However, most of the reported anisotropic particles are limited in microscopic or submicroscopic scale. Recently, we have extended it into the molecular level, and found new self-assembly behaviors can be realized from these building blocks. For instance, we constructed a Janus hyperbranched polymer by the noncovalent coupling between a hydrophobic hyperbranched poly(3-ethyl-3-oxetanemethanol) with an apex of an azobenzene (AZO)group and a hydrophilic hyperbranched polyglycerol with an apex of a β-cyclodextrin (CD) group through the specific AZO/CD host?guest interactions. This amphiphilic supramolecular polymer can further self-assemble into unilamellar bilayer vesicles with narrow size distribution, which could further aggregate into colloidal crystal-like close-packed arrays under freeze-drying conditions. Such a well-defined and uniform vesicle structure has seldom been observed. Besides, we also focused on the functionalities of self-assemblies. For example, in cytomimetic chemistry, most of the works are concentrated on the structure mimics of cells but seldom involve the functionalities therein. Recently, we produced a pH-responsive polymer vesicle through the aqueous self-assembly of an amphiphilic diblock copolymer consisting of many fluorescent chromophores of dimethylaminoazobenzene. They exhibited pH-responsive breathing behavior involving the swelling and shrinkage of the vesicles. Furthermore, in analogy with jellyfish, the fluorescence is quenched when the vesicles breathe in, whereas a strong green fluorescence is emitted when the vesicles breathe out. Such a cytomimetic behavior in combination with the structure and functionality express has seldom been observed before.
New Approaches to Stimuli-Responsive Polymeric Micelles and Hollow Spheres

Abstract:This article briefly describes some new approaches to stimuli-sensitive polymeric micelles and hollow spheres, which were developed in the authors’ laboratory in recent years. (1) Self-assembly of component polymers to non-covalently connected micelles (NCCM) driven by specific interactions. For example, in water, PCL and PAA formed core-shell nanospheres due to interpolymer hydrogen bonding. After crosslinking the PAA shell and removing the PCL core, “nanocages” made of PAA network were obtained. This hollow structure shows perfect reversible size-pH dependence. (2) Simultaneous in-situ polymerization of monomers and self-assembly of the polymers. In this approach, PNIPAM network was formed by radical polymerization covering PCL particles. Hollow spheres of PNIPAM network were then obtained by biodegradation of the PCL core. Both the core-shell spheres and hollow spheres show reversible size dependence on temperature change because of the phase transition of PNIPAM around 32°C. (3) Complexation-induced micellization and transition between the micelles and hollow spheres. Graft copolymers of hydroxylethyl cellulose (HEC) and PAA were prepared by free radical polymerization. The copolymers showed pH dependent micellization, i.e., micelles formed when pH of the graft copolymer solution decreased to around 3. The micellar structure could be locked by crosslinking the PAA grafts. The resultant cross-linked micelles undergo pH-dependent transition between the micelles and hollow spheres, which accompanies a remarkable particle size change. Both the micellization and the structure transition were found to be reversible and associated with H-bonding complexation between the main chain and grafts.
Morphology Evolution of Polymeric Assemblies Regulated with Fluoro-Containing Mesogen in Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Abstract:Mesogen-containing amphiphilic block copolymers have shown extremely abundant self-assembly behaviors because of the liquid crystalline (LC) alignment within the assemblies. However, development of an understanding of the self-assembly behaviors of these amphiphilic LC polymers is still constrained by the low assembly concentration and complex kinetic effects. Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a powerful technique to prepare polymer assemblies at high solids content with good repeatability. Taking advantage of PISA, we systematically study the self-assembly behaviors of a series of mesogen-containing triblock copolymers poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(benzyl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-perfluorooctylethyl methacrylate) (PDMA-b-PBzMA-b-PFMA), which are prepared by seeded reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer dispersion polymerization of FMA with PDMA-b-PBzMA micelles or vesicles as the seeds. When PDMA-b-PBzMA micelles are used, the morphology of the PDMA-b-PBzMA-b-PFMA assemblies evolves from spheroid to phase-segregated sphere, followed by phase-segregated spheroid, and eventually to cylinder, while the assemblies undergo a vesicle-to-micelle transition with a framboidal intermediate when PDMA-b-PBzMA vesicles are used as the seeds. These spherical micelles further fuse to cylinders or large spheres depending on the DPs of PBzMA and PFMA blocks. The LC ordering of the PFMA blocks is examined by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction; the microphase segregation between PFMA and PBzMA blocks is studied with TEM and atomic force microscopy. These experiments evince that the formation of the ellipsoidal and cylindrical micelles is driven by the LC alignment of PFMA blocks, while the microphase segregation between PFMA and PBzMA blocks complicates the ultimate morphology through modulating the size of PFMA nanodomains. The interplay of the hydrophobic interaction among PBzMA blocks, lipophobic interaction, and LC ordering of PFMA blocks thus generates the above self-assembly behaviors.
Controllable multicompartment morphologies from cooperative self-assembly of copolymer-copolymer blends.

Abstract:Multicompartment nanostructures, such as microcapsules with clearly separated shell and core, are not easily accessible by conventional block copolymer self-assembly. We assess a versatile computational strategy through cooperative assembly of diblock copolymer blends to generate spherical and cylindrical compartmentalized micelles with intricate structures and morphologies. The co-assembly strategy combines the advantages of polymer blending and incompatibility-induced phase separation. Following this strategy, various nanoassemblies of pure AB, binary AB/AC and ternary AB/AC/AD systems such as compartmentalized micelles with sponge-like, Janus, capsule-like and onion-like morphologies can be obtained. The formation and structural adjustment of microcapsule micelles, in which the shell or core can be occupied by either pure or mixed diblock copolymers, were explored. The mechanism involving the separation of shell and core copolymers is attributed to the stretching force differences of copolymers which drive the arrangement of different copolymers in a pathway to minimize the total interfacial energy. Moreover, by adjusting block interactions, an efficient approach is exhibited for regulating the shell or core composition and morphology in microcapsule micelles, such as the transition from the "pure shell/mixed core" morphology to the "mixed shell/pure core" morphology in the AB/AC/AD micelle. This mesoscale simulation study identifies the key factors governing co-assembly of diblock copolymer blends and provides bottom-up insights towards the design and optimization of new multicompartment micelles.
Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Asymmetric Comb-Like Copolymers with Responsive Rigid Side Chains

Abstract:Amphiphilic asymmetric comb-like copolymers (AACCs) possess distinct self-assembly behaviours due to their unique architecture. However, the synthetic difficulties of well-defined AACCs have prohibited a systematic understanding of the architecture-morphology relationships. In this work, we conducted dissipative particle dynamics simulations to investigate the self-assembly behaviours of AACCs with responsive rigid side chains in selective solvents. The effects of side chain length, number of branches, and spacers on the morphology of aggregates were investigated by mapping out morphology diagrams. Besides, the numbers and surface areas of aggregates clearly depicted the morphological transitions during the self-assembly process. Moreover, the rod-to-coil conformation transitions were simulated to explore the stimuli-responsive behaviour of the AACCs with responsive rigid side chains by adjusting the bond angle parameter of the rigid chains. The results indicated that without the support of the rigid chains, the assembly structure collapsed, leading to the tube-to-channelized micelles and one-compartment-to-multicompartment vesicle morphology transformations. The simulation results are consistent with earlier experimental results, which can provide theoretical guidance for assembly toward desired nanostructures.

Abstract:The morphological control of polymer micellar aggregates is an important issue in applications such as nanomedicine and material science. Stimuli responsive soft materials have attracted significant attention for their well-controlled morphologies. However, despite extensive studies, it is still a challenge to prepare nanoscale assemblies with responsive behaviors. Herein, a new chiral liquid crystal (LC) aliphatic polycarbonate with side chain bearing diosgenyl mesogen, named mPEG43-PMCC25-P(MCC-DHO)15, was synthesized through the ring-opening polymerization and coupling reaction. The self-assembled behavior of the LC copolymer was explored. In aqueous solution, the functionalized copolymer could self-organize into different nanostructures with changing pH value, such as nanospheres and nanofibers. This would offer new possibilities in the design of nanostructured organic materials.

Abstract:Intelligent polymers, due to their sensitive stimuli response to changes in the environment, have gained increasing amounts of attention over recent years and have become a popular topic in polymer materials science. In this study, the aggregation behaviors and stimuli responses of the stimuli-responsive diblock polyampholyte poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PDMAEMA-b-PAA) are conveniently tunable by introducing pH changes, temperature changes, salt addition and surfactant neutralization. Under different pH values, either globular or fractal self-assemblies can be observed in which the latter have crystal properties. Salts and alkalis can promote the fractal aggregation growth because their deposited crystals can act as nucleation sites for the polyampholyte chains. A combination of fluorescence spectroscopy, atom force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the presence of anionic surfactants in the PDMAEMA-b-PAA solutions promoted the solubility of the polyampholyte, consequently leading to a more homogeneous distribution of the polymer chains on the solid substrate upon drying the mixtures. The fractal formation was suppressed for the studied Gemini surfactants, and a higher surfactant hydrophobicity results in an earlier start of the formation of the fractal pattern.

Abstract:The co-assembly of polymers has attracted increasing attention due to the ability of generating diverse assembly morphology. This paper describes the synthesis and self-assembly of several novel amphiphilic block copolymers (PMnEOS-b-PAA, n=1-3) as well as co-assembly of PMDEOS-b-PAA with typical polystyrene-b-polyacrylic acid (PS-b-PAA). Namely, these block copolymers were fabricated by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of functionalized styrene bearing different glycol units on the para-position and acrylic acid, and characterized by H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum (H-1 NMR). The thermo-responsive and pH-responsive properties of these block copolymers were then investigated, and they showed good thermo- and pH- responsiveness. Furthermore, as a comparison, the self-assembly actions of these block copolymers were also examined in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/H2O and THF/toluene (PhMe) , respectively. It was found that the different block copolymers with different glycol units displayed various morphologies, especially in two different solvent systems. More interestingly, the co-assembly action of PMDEOS-b-PAA/PS-b-PAA( mass ratio 1: 1) in a mixture of THF-PhMe( volume ratio 2: 1) was detaily studied and a new spherical nanoparticle with uniformly distributed internal channel and smooth surface was found. Also, this coassembly morphology could be well repeated. The corresponding self- and co-assembly mechanisms were also proposed. This novel co-assembly mode would have potential application for further supporting catalysts, small molecules recognition and release in industry.

Abstract:Two asymmetric conjugated monomers of AB(2)-1 and AB(2)-2 with both dibenzo-24-crown-8 and dibenzylamine groups can self-assemble to form micellar and vesicular aggregates under acidic conditions, during which supramolecular hyperbranched polymers form controllably via host-guest recognition between dibenzo-24-crown-8 and dibenzylammonium groups.

Abstract:In this report, multiple-stimulus-responsive materials were synthesized via supramolecular self-assembly. One-dimensional nanorods were constructed by the self-aggregation of 4-(phenyl-azo)benzoic acid (PBA) molecules in aqueous solution at pH 3.2. As the pH of the solution was increased to 6.5, these nanorods transformed into two-dimensional polygons. Upon UV irradiation, the as-prepared nanorods disappeared completely, and nanospheres were subsequently obtained. On the basis of the weak interactions between PBA and additive molecules, for example, N-alkyl-N'-carboxymethyl imidazolium bromide, beta-cyclodextrin, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, materials with various morphologies were also fabricated by a surfactant-assistant self-assembly strategy. Noteworthy is that Salvia officinalis-shaped material is among them. To the best of our knowledge, this type of microstructured material has been rarely reported. In addition, slender fibers, sphere-like particles, and aggregates of spheres were also observed. These results suggest that the rational fabrication of materials with desired shapes and sizes can be achieved by changing external environments during the self-aggregation of PBA molecules. Both cyclic voltammogram experiments and density functional theory calculations exhibit the optoelectronic behavior of these materials, which is expected to have potential applications in the fabrication of photoelectronic nanodevices.
