Abstract:The effects of the environment on the energy storage of supercapacitors as well as the underlying mechanisms have long been neglected. This paper reports that the capacitance of hexagonal-phase tungsten oxide (h-WO3)-based supercapacitors increases by approximate to 17% under solar light. Thorough analyses of the wavelength dependence of the enhancement, capacitive mechanism, energy storage dynamics, and impedance reveal that: i) photoexcited electrons are responsible for the enhancement; ii) the insertion of protons into the large hexagonal tunnels of h-WO3, instead of a surface capacitive process, is greatly facilitated by the photoexcited electrons; iii) the theoretical light-induced capacitance enhancement can reach up to 38% for a h-WO3-based supercapacitor. Moreover, as an application of this finding, a self-powered photodetector based on a h-WO3 supercapacitor is fabricated, wherein the photoexcited electrons serve as the signal for detecting solar light. The device works without an external power source and can be considered as an ultimately integrated power source-sensor system. This work sheds light on the interaction between solar light and a semiconductor-based supercapacitor as well as the concrete mechanisms behind the phenomenon. These efforts also open the door to the design of highly integrated, brand-new power source-sensor systems.

Abstract:A biomimetic structural graphene quantum dots/MXene photothermal supercapacitor inspired by the light‐trapping effect of wide‐leaf spiral grass is developed. The novel bionic structural supercapacitor achieves remarkable photothermal response (surface temperature of 67.6 °C under one‐sun illumination) and record‐high solar thermal‐driven pseudo‐capacitance enhancement (up to 304% at high rate) that will open new frontiers for the application of solar thermal energy. Solar‐thermal conversion is considered as a green and simple means to improve the performance of energy storage materials, but often limited by the intrinsic photothermal properties of materials and crude structure design. Herein, inspired by the unique light trapping effect of wide leaf spiral grass during photosynthesis, a biomimetic structural photothermal energy storage system is developed, to further promote the solar thermal‐driven pseudo capacitance improvement. In this system, three‐dimensional printed tortional Kelvin cell arrays structure with interesting light trapping property functions as "spiral leaf blades" to improve the efficiency of light absorption, while graphene quantum dots/MXene nanohybrids with wide photothermal response range and strong electrochemical activity serve as "chloroplast" for photothermal conversion and energy storage. As expected, the biomimetic structure‐enhanced photothermal supercapacitor achieves an ideal solar thermal‐driven pseudo capacitance enhancement (up to 304%), an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 10.47 F cm−2, remarkable photothermal response (surface temperature change of 50.1 °C), excellent energy density (1.18 mWh cm−2) and cycling stability (10000 cycles). This work not only offers a novel enhancement strategy for photothermal applications, but also inspires new structure designs for multifunctional energy storage and conversion devices.

Abstract:While flexible supercapacitors with high capacitance and energy density is highly desired for outdoor wearable electronics, their application under low-temperature environments, like other energy storage devices, remains an urgent challenge. Solar thermal energy converts solar light into heat and has been extensively applied for solar desalination and power generation. In the present work, to address the failure problem of energy storage devices in a cold environment, solar thermal energy was used to improve flexible supercapacitor performance at low temperature. As a proof of concept presented here, a typical all-solid-state supercapacitor composed of activated carbon electrodes and gel polymer electrolyte was coated by a carbonized melamine sponge. Due to the ability of photothermal conversion of carbonized melamine sponge, the capacitance of the supercapacitor was greatly enhanced, which could be further improved by adding surface plasmonic nanomaterials, for example, Ag nanowires. Compared with the device without photothermal conversion layers, the specific capacitance increased 3.48 times at -20 °C and retained 87% capacitance at room temperature and the specific capacitance increased 6.69 times at -50 °C and retained 73% capacitance at room temperature. The present work may provide new insights on the application of solar energy and the design of energy storage devices with excellent low-temperature resistance.

Abstract:The relatively low specific capacitance of flexible carbons hinders their practical application for fabricating high-performance flexible supercapacitors. In this work, a surface engineering method is proposed to boost the supercapacitive performance of the flexible carbon. In this method, a flexible carbon was fabricated from carbon felt via co-activation with potassium argininate and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as activators, and the resulting material is abbreviated as AKCF. Unlike traditional KOH activation processes, the addition of potassium argininate can produce a micro-graphitized carbon layer to be the outer layer of AKCF fibers for achieving better electronic transfer. Due to the improved conductivity and lower charge transfer resistance endowed by a thin micro-graphitized carbon layer, the capacitance of the AKCF-0.1 (0.1 M arginine was used) electrode obtained by the co-activation process is elevated to a 1.8-fold higher value of 403 C.g(-1) (2583 mC.cmz) relative to the AKCF-0 (0 M arginine was used) electrode prepared by KOH activation alone (222 C.g(-1) or 1369 mC.cmz). Moreover, this AKCF-0.1 electrode also displays satisfactory rate capability (66% capacitance retention after a 20-fold current increase) and highly stable cycling performance (no capacitance decline after 20,000 cycles). In addition, the asymmetric supercapacitors constructed with this AKCF-0.1 electrode as the flexible negative electrode expresses high energy densities of 68.4 Wh.kg(-1) and 0.139 mWh.cm(-2) in aqueous and gel electrolytes, respectively. Abstract:Photoassisted energy storage is a promising approach to realizing the utilization of solar power, and the reasonable design of a photoassisted supercapacitor with photosensitive materials is one of the efficient ways to realize solar power conversion and storage. Herein, we design a photoassisted supercapacitor electrode (TiO2/CF) by integrating a photoelectrode (TiO2) and a capacitive electrode (CF) together, which achieves photoelectric synergistic charge storage. It is found that spherical TiO2 precursors will crash, expand, integrate, stretch, and tear, forming a reticulated structure. Reticulated TiO2 guarantees illumination, which can boost the utilization of solar power. The TiO2/CF electrode exhibits a considerable (1.9-fold) increase in capacitance performance under light conditions as compared to dark conditions. Furthermore, this TiO2/CF photoassisted supercapacitor electrode exhibits an excellent cycle stability of about 99.19% after 5000 cycles. Moreover, the enhancement mechanism is elaborated as follows: these high-energy photoelectrons will participate in charge transfer to increase the total energy of the process, thereby enhancing capacitance performance. In addition, these photoelectron-hole pairs act as additional charge carriers to favor charge accumulation. This work may offer new prospects for developing photoassisted energy supply systems for the utilization of solar power.

Abstract:Supercapacitors based on environmentally friendly electrode materials have attracted great interest for energy storage devices with wide applications in high-power systems and miniaturized electronic devices, owing to the fast charge/discharge capability and excellent cycling stability. It is highly desired yet challenging to effectively improve the capacitances of TiO2, especially via a facile route. Herein, we demonstrate a surface fluorine modification strategy to greatly improve the capacitance of anatase TiO2 up to 6.4 times. Density functional theory calculations show that the surface F modification can transform the surface storage sites and the diffusion paths for lithium ions. Thus, the diffusion barrier is reduced from 1.46 eV to 0.39 eV, which is confirmed by the experimental results of the significant enhance in diffusion coefficient. This work could provide a new avenue to the design of high-performance electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage and other surface -diffusion-related fields.

Abstract:Low-grade heat recovery through ion redistribution ( i.e., Soret effect) in electric double-layer capacitors is a recent emergence for the conversion of thermal energy into electrical energy. A popular approach to improving the performance of such devices is optimizing the composition of the electrolyte. However, in addition to the thermodiffusion behavior of electrolyte ions, the electrode-electrolyte interactions also play a vital role in determining the ionic Seebeck coefficient, although it has not been clearly investigated. In this work, the crucial role of electrode-electrolyte interactions in thermoelectric conversion efficiency is demonstrated by employing vertical graphene as a base material for surface modification. After the surface modification via ozone treatment, oxygen-containing functional groups are enriched on graphene sheets. After improving the interfacial interactions between vertical graphene electrode and electrolyte, the ionic Seebeck coefficient is largely enhanced by 4.6-fold (up to 1 mV K-1) while the capacitance is improved by 1.29 times. Density functional theory calculations reveal that such a high thermal response originates from the stronger ion-electrode interaction and the higher charge transfer efficiency via oxygen-containing functional groups. In addition, the energy stored in supercapacitors can be extracted by discharging through a resistor. The findings of this study can help us to better understand the role of electrode-electrolyte interactions in increasing the ionic Seebeck coefficient, providing a new strategy for improved heat-to-electric conversion.

Abstract:Energy storage devices for example supercapacitors suffer from severe capacitance decay at low temperature, which limits their application in extreme conditions. In spite of great efforts dedicated to develop a low-temperature-resistant electrolyte, the problem is still not solved satisfactorily. In this work, to address the problem, black TiO2/carbonized melamine sponge (CMF) was designed and prepared by adjusting the band gap of TiO2 nanoparticles due to the excellent photothermal conversion ability of black TiO2 nanoparticles. Benefiting from its excellent photothermal conversion ability, the performance of flexible supercapacitors at low temperatures has been greatly improved. A supercapacitor based on activated carbon electrodes is encapsulated in black TiO2/CMF serving as a photothermal conversion layer at low temperature. The specific capacitance of a supercapacitor is improved by 287.67% at −15 °C and improved by 187.51% at −50 °C under solar illumination. The proposed photothermal conversion material in this work shows great potential under a low-temperature environment and can be extended to other energy storage devices.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are currently attracting intensive attention because they can provide energy density by orders of magnitude higher than dielectric capacitors, greater power density, and longer cycling ability than batteries. The main challenge for supercapacitors is to develop them with high energy density that is close to that of a current rechargeable battery, while maintaining their inherent characteristics of high power and long cycling life. Consequently, much research has been devoted to enhance the performance of supercapacitors by either maximizing the specific capacitance and/or increasing the cell voltage. The latest advances in the exploration and development of new supercapacitor systems and related electrode materials are highlighted. Also, the prospects and challenges in practical application are analyzed, aiming to give deep insights into the material science and electrochemical fields.
Photocatalysis-Assisted Co3O4/g-C3N4p-n Junction All-Solid-State Supercapacitors: A Bridge Between Energy Storage and Photocatalysis

Abstract:Supercapacitors with the advantages of high power density and fast discharging rate have full applications in energy storage. However, the low energy density restricts their development. Conventional methods for improving energy density are mainly confined to doping atoms and hybridizing with other active materials. Herein, a Co3O4/g-C(3)N(4)p-n junction with excellent capacity is developed and its application in an all-solid-state flexible device is demonstrated, whose capacity and energy density are considerably enhanced by simulated solar light irradiation. Under photoirradiation, the capacity is increased by 70.6% at the maximum current density of 26.6 mA cm(-2)and a power density of 16.0 kW kg(-1). The energy density is enhanced from 7.5 to 12.9 Wh kg(-1)with photoirradiation. The maximum energy density reaches 16.4 Wh kg(-1)at a power density of 6.4 kW kg(-1). It is uncovered that the lattice distortion of Co3O4, reduces defects of g-C3N4, and the facilitated photo-generated charge separation by the Co3O4/g-C(3)N(4)p-n junction all make contributions to the promoted electrochemical storage performance. This work may provide a new strategy to enhance the energy density of supercapacitors and expand the application range of photocatalytic materials.
Photoirradiation-Induced Capacitance Enhancement in the h -WO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 Submicron Rod Heterostructure under Simulated Solar Illumination and Its Postillumination Capacitance Enhancement Retainment from a Photocatalytic Memory Effect

Abstract:Recently, photoassisted charging has been demonstrated as a green and sustainable approach to successfully enhance the capacitance of supercapacitors with low cost and good efficiency. However, their light-induced capacitance enhancement is relatively low and is lost quickly when the illumination is off. In this work, a novel active material system is developed for supercapacitors with the photoassisted charging capability by the decoration of a small amount of Bi2WO6 nanoparticles on an h-WO3 submicron rod surface in situ, which forms a typical type II band alignment heterostructure with a close contact interface through the co-sharing of W atoms between h-WO3 submicron rods and Bi2WO6 nanoparticles. The photogenerated charge carrier separation and transfer are largely enhanced in the h-WO3/Bi2WO6 submicron rod electrode, which subsequently allows more charge carriers to participate in its photoassisted charging process to largely enhance its capacitance improvement under simulated solar illumination than that of the h-WO3 submicron rod electrode. Furthermore, the h-WO3/Bi2WO6 submicron rod electrode could retain its photoinduced capacitance enhancement in the dark for an extended period of time from the photocatalytic memory effect. Thus, our work provides a solution to the two major drawbacks of reported supercapacitors with the light-induced capacitance enhancement property, and supercapacitors based on active materials with the photocatalytic memory effect could be utilized in various technical fields.

Abstract:Solar energy is clean, open, and infinite, but solar radiation on the earth is fluctuating, intermittent, and unstable. So, the sustainable utilization of solar energy needs the complementary combination of high-efficient energy conversion and low-loss energy storage technologies. Hence, a photocapacitor integrated with photo-electrical conversion and electric-chemical storage functions in single device is a cost-effective, volume-effective and functional-effective optimal choice. However, the highest reported conversion storage efficiency of single device is less than 13 %. Here, we investigate the relationship among various efficiencies of photocapacitors during conversion storage process, and propose a function portfolio management concept. Accordingly, a three-terminal photocapacitor integrated with perovskite solar cell and symmetrical supercapacitor units is designed. By harmonizing the energy matching between conversion and storage units and seeking the maximum power points coincide and the maximum efficiency points synchronize, the solar energy conversion storage efficiency of the integrated photocapacitor surpasses milestone of 20 %.

Abstract:Thermally-induced self-charging of electrochemical capacitors is a recently reported phenomenon, whereby a change in the temperature of a supercapacitor can lead to the generation of a voltage difference across the device. The temperature change is induced for all the device or only some of its components, unaided by or in combination with other voltage-inducing effects. This phenomenon is based on old and known physical concepts, whose use for energy generation became possible due to the advent of nanomaterials. The purpose of this article is to present the research conducted on this phenomenon, and offer a prospective direction for further progress in the field. First, we briefly introduce the existing heat-to-electricity conversion technologies, and their underlying principles. Then, we examine the main thermally-induced phenomena occurring in the environment of an ionic electrolyte, and/or a solid-liquid interface. After that, we review the studies conducted on thermally-induced self-charging in electrochemical capacitors, and the performance factors investigated so far. Finally, we present the future prospects of this field in the form of questions to address, additional factors to inspect, and materials of potential benefit for the design of thermally-chargeable supercapacitors.
Tuning Interfacial Ion Distribution to Improve Energy Density of Supercapacitors

Abstract:Supercapacitors as energy carriers have the advantages of high-power efficiency and long-term stability. An improvement of their energy density promises a solution to make up for the weakness of secondary batteries at a high rate of applications. Here we report an attempt to improve the energy density of supercapacitor by tuning ions arrangement at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Upon the theoretical analysis with classical density functional theory (CDFT), we find that the capacitance of the supercapacitor is maximized at a mediate con-centration of electrolytes, i.e., 1.0 M, where ions accumulate near the electrode surface and display a few multilayered oscillatory distributions. Further, by adjusting the dielectric constant of electrolyte solution and the electrode surface voltage, the interfacial ion distribution is tuned to optimize the energy density of super -capacitors. The theoretical results are corroborated by designed experiments, confirming the role of interfacial ion distribution in specific capacitance. This study shows that an appropriate interfacial ion distribution is beneficial to obtaining high capacitance, highlighting an unusual solution to improve the energy density of supercapacitors.

Abstract:Thermoelectric generators (TEGs), which harness and convert solar-thermal energy into electrical energy, possess immense potential within the field of photothermal conversion (PTC). However, the widespread adoption of conventional TEGs in PTC domain has encountered some obstacles, which represent that TEGs have poor inherent PTC performance, resulting in low solar-thermoelectric conversion efficiency, and this solar-thermal-electric conversion method lacks the capability of electrical energy storage. Hence, an urgent imperative exists to develop integrated and synergistic energy technologies that can respond to these underlying challenges. Herein, we reported a novel strategy for employing spinel-type Cu1.5Mn1.5O4 PTC coating to adorn conventional TEG to construct the solar-thermoelectric generator (STEG) which exhibited excellent solar-thermoelectric conversion capability, and then integrating the STEG in series with a supercapacitor composed of synthetic ionic liquid electrolytes and carbon electrodes to fulfill the conversion and storage of solar-thermal energy into electrical energy. The results indicated that, when compared to a conventional TEG, the STEG attained a drastically elevated internal temperature difference due to the excellent PTC capability of spinel-type coating. As a result, remarkable enhancements were observed in both the steady-state voltages (V oc) and maximum output power density (P max) of the STEG, exceeding a 6-fold and 40-fold increase, respectively. Furthermore, we conducted experimental validation to ascertain the viability of the solar-driven STEG to charge a supercapacitor, thereby achieving the conversion and storage of solar-thermal energy into electrical energy, and the working mechanism of this integrated system has been revealed. This study offers invaluable insights into the development of highly efficient solar-thermal energy conversion and storage methods.

Abstract:Supercapacitors with the advantages of high power density and fast discharging rate have full applications in energy storage. However, the low energy density restricts their development. Conventional methods for improving energy density are mainly confined to doping atoms and hybridizing with other active materials. Herein, a Co3O4/g‐C3N4 p–n junction with excellent capacity is developed and its application in an all‐solid‐state flexible device is demonstrated, whose capacity and energy density are considerably enhanced by simulated solar light irradiation. Under photoirradiation, the capacity is increased by 70.6% at the maximum current density of 26.6 mA cm−2 and a power density of 16.0 kW kg−1. The energy density is enhanced from 7.5 to 12.9 Wh kg−1 with photoirradiation. The maximum energy density reaches 16.4 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 6.4 kW kg−1. It is uncovered that the lattice distortion of Co3O4, reduces defects of g‐C3N4, and the facilitated photo‐generated charge separation by the Co3O4/g‐C3N4 p–n junction all make contributions to the promoted electrochemical storage performance. This work may provide a new strategy to enhance the energy density of supercapacitors and expand the application range of photocatalytic materials.

A Solar-Driven Flexible Electrochromic Supercapacitor

Materials

Abstract:Solar-driven electrochromic smart windows with energy-storage ability are promising for energy-saving buildings. In this work, a flexible photoelectrochromic device (PECD) was designed for this purpose. The PECD is composed of two flexible transparent conductive layers, a photocatalytic layer, an electrochromic material layer, and a transparent electrolyte layer. The photocatalytic layer is a dye-sensitized TiO2 thick film and the electrochromic layer is a WO3 thin film, which also possesses a supercapacitive property. Under illumination, dye-sensitized TiO2 thick film realizes photo-drive electrochromism that the WO3 changes from colorless to blue with large optical modulation. Meanwhile, the PECD has an electrochemical supercapacitance showing an energy storage property of 21 mFcm(-2) (114.9 Fg(-1) vs the mass of WO3), stable mechanical performance and long cycle performance. The PECD can effectively adjust the transmittance of visible and near-infrared light without any external power supply, realizing zero energy consumption, and can convert solar energy into electrical energy for storage.
