Abstract:Ce and Mn modified TiO2 sorbents (CeMnTi) were prepared by a co-precipitation method, and their ability to remove elemental mercury from coal gas in a fixed bed reactor was studied. Based on results of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies, the modification mechanisms of the CeMnTi sorbents are discussed. Mn doping improved the specific surface area and dispersion of cerium oxides on the sorbent surface, while Ce doping increased the proportion of Mn4+ in manganese oxides by a synergetic effect between manganese oxides and cerium oxides. The effects of the active component, temperature, and coal gas components on the mercury removal performance of the sorbents were investigated. The results showed that the CeMnTi sorbents exhibited high mercury removal efficiency. Ce0.2Mn0.1Ti adsorbed 91.55% elemental mercury from coal gas at 160 °C. H2S and O2 significantly improved the ability of sorbents to remove mercury. Part of the H2S formed stable sulfates or sulfites through a series of oxidation reaction chains on the sorbent surface. HCl also improved the mercury removal performance, but reduced the promotion effect of H2S for mercury removal when coexisting with H2S. CO and H2 had a minor inhibitory effect on mercury adsorption. The recycling performance of the sorbents was investigated by thermal regeneration. The thermal decomposition of the used sorbents indicated that mercury compounds were present mainly in the form of HgO and HgS, and higher temperature was beneficial for regeneration. The formation of sulfates and sulfites in the presence of H2S led to a decrease in mercury removal efficiency.

Abstract:A series of CeO2-TiO2 (CeTi) sorbents with different CeO2/TiO2 mass ratios were prepared by an impregnation method and employed to remove elemental mercury (Hg(0)) in simulated syngas. The CeTi sorbents with a CeO2/TiO2 mass ratio of 0.2 exhibited superior Hg(0) removal efficiency from 80 to 150 °C, which could be ascribed to the greater amount of surface chemisorbed oxygen resulted from Ce(3+) on the sample surface. H2S was the most effective syngas component responsible for Hg(0) removal. The use of 400 ppm H2S resulted in 98% Hg(0) removal efficiency under the experimental conditions. H2 and CO had a negligible effect on the efficiency of Hg removal. In the presence of H2S, a prohibitive effect of HCl and NH3 on Hg(0) removal was observed because of the consumption of the surface oxygen. Water vapor also inhibited Hg(0) removal due to competitive adsorption with H2S. Hg(0) removal over CeTi sorbents was proposed to follow the Eley-Rideal mechanism, in which active surface sulfur reacts with gas-phase Hg(0). This large oxygen storage capacity of CeTi sorbents is quite favorable to H2S catalytic oxidation and Hg(0) emission control in an extremely reducing environment, such as when there is a deficiency of O2.

Abstract:CuCl2-impregnated sorbents were employed to remove elemental mercury from flue gas. Three carriers including neutral Al2O3, artificial zeolite, and activated carbon have been investigated in this research. The performances of these prepared sorbents have been tested in a bench-scale fixed-bed reactor under different simulated flue gas atmospheres and temperatures (333-573 K). CuCl2-impregnated activated carbon showed the best adsorption ability. However, CuCl2-impregnated neutral Al2O3 and zeolite have demonstrated an adsorption rate similar to that of CuCl2-impregnated activated carbon in the early stage of the tests (5 min), and they achieved relatively high mercury oxidation efficiencies. These non-carbon sorbents could remarkably enhance the technoeconomical properties of mercury removal in coal-fired power plants and have great potentials in industrial application. The appropriate mercury capture temperature for these sorbents is 333-473 K. The possible mechanisms of elemental mercury oxidation have been discussed.
Effects of CO and CO2 on the Removal of Elemental Mercury over Carbonaceous Surfaces

Abstract:Coal gasification is a popular method for the optimization of coal utilization and the reduction of environmental pollutant emissions. However, the reductive atmosphere of its products is disadvantageous for removing elemental mercury (Hg-0). Activated cokes (AC) was employed in this work for mercury capture in a reducing atmosphere. The high-temperature heating decreases the mercury-removal capability of carbon sorbents because the carbonaceous surface is becoming oxygen-depleted and micropore-decreased after the heating treatment. The mechanism of mercury adsorption in pure nitrogen follows the Mars-Maessen mechanism over the carbon sorbents. To identify the effects of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) on Hg-0 removal, the Hg-0-adsorption and thermal desorption experiments were carried in a fixed-bed reaction system. CO inhibits both the chemisorption and physisorption of Hg-0. CO2 competes for the active sites, lactone groups and hydroxyl groups, and occupies the micropores, which is beneficial to adsorb Hg-0 physically. When CO and CO2 coexisted, the removal efficiencies show steadier than those in monocomponent gas (only CO or CO2). CO2 can resist the negative effect of CO on Hg-0 removal, to some extent, because CO2 can inhibit the oxidation and disproportionation of CO. This experimental study provides practical guidance for the development of mercury-removal technology with carbon materials in the coal gasification plant.
Elution of Hg-containing Substances from CeO2-MnO2/TiO2 Adsorbent in H2S Atmosphere by CuCl2 Solution

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) pollution in syngas has received increasing attention. The adsorbent can effectively remove Hg from syngas, and the removal of Hg-containing substances before the landfill of spent adsorbent can avoid Hg secondary pollution effectively. H2S was the main resource for the generation of stable and insoluble HgS in syngas. In this work, the elution of Hg-containing substances from the spent CeO2-MnO2/TiO2 (Ce-Mn/Ti) adsorbent in H2S atmosphere by CuCl2 solution was studied. The optimum temperature for Ce-Mn/Ti to remove Hg0 in H2S atmosphere was 160 degrees C. The Hg-containing substances were HgS (black), HgS (red), and HgO (yellow), in which both the proportion and elution difficulty followed the descending order of HgS(black) > HgS (red) > HgO(yellow). The elution was basically completed within 2 min with excellent efficiency of 98.38 %. Higher concentration, higher temperature, and lower pH were conducive to the elution, and the optimum concentration and temperature were 1.0 mol/L and 45 degrees C respectively. The elution followed the first-order two -domain model, in which HgO and HgS were the rapid and slow part respectively. The elution not only retained the favorable mesoporous structure, but also enabled the eluted Ce-Mn/Ti adsorbent to have a higher efficiency and a better stability on Hg removal by loading the active component of CuCl2. This study demonstrated that CuCl2 could be a good eluent for the elution of Hg-containing species and the reutilization of metal oxide-based adsorbent.
Synergetic Removal of Elemental Mercury and NO over TiCe0.25Sn0.25Ox Catalysts from Flue Gas: Performance and Mechanism Study

Abstract:A novel TiCe0.25Sn0.25Ox catalyst was designed and prepared by a sol-gel method for synergetic removal of NO and elemental mercury (Hg-0) from flue gas. The as-designed TiCe0.25Sn0.25Ox catalyst achieved a synergetic removal efficiency of NO (NH3-SCR) and Hg-0 (Hg-0 oxidation) of 95%, 85% and 70%, 65% (after 300 ppm SO2 and 6 vol% H2O were injected) at 200 degrees C under simulated flue gases conditions, respectively. Moreover, the mercury, which gathered on the surface of TiCe0.25Sn0.25Ox after adsorption and oxidation, could be released and collected by the thermal decomposition method, avoiding the secondary pollution by mercury. The mechanism underlying the synergetic removal of NO and Hg-0 was also investigated using various characterization techniques. The synergistic catalysis between redox and solid acid contributed to the synergetic removal of NO and Hg-0 over TiCe0.25Sn0.25Ox. The results of XRD and XPS revealed that the lattice oxygen was a key factor for Hg-0 oxidation reaction. The results of N-2-physisorption, NH3-TPD, H-2-TPR and Py-IR illustrated that TiCe0.25Sn0.25Ox possessed the mesopores structure, suitable particle sizes, the excellent redox and weak acid (Lewis sites) properties, contributing to its high NO and Hg-0 removal efficiency. Furthermore, the removal of NO and Hg-0 showed a synergetic effect. The analysis of Hg-TPD and (NO + O-2)-TPD had confirmed that the mid-product NO2 of NH3-SCR reaction was favorable for Hg-0 oxidation. In summary, the TiCe0.25Sn0.25Ox possesses not only good synergetic removal performance for NO and Hg-0 but also satisfactory anti-sulfur performance, which is a promising candidate for the effective and economical removal of NO and Hg-0 in the cement and steel industries.

Abstract:The characteristics of mercury desorption on spent CeO2-TiO2 (CeTi) sorbents were investigated to improve the cyclic regeneration removal activity. Mercury was significantly released in the form of elemental mercury at temperatures ranging from 250 to 280 °C. Mercury desorption had a significant correlation with regeneration temperature, but was independent of the heating rate and regeneration conditions. The optimal regeneration temperature was 500 °C. The CeTi sorbents could be easily restored by simple heating and exhibited superior activity over several capture- regeneration cycles. The amount of released mercury almost equaled the adsorbed mercury on the surface of the CeTi sorbent, indicating that most of the adsorbed mercury was released during the heating process.
Elemental Mercury Capture from Syngas by Novel High-Temperature Sorbent Based on Pd–Ce Binary Metal Oxides

Abstract:CeO2 was doped into Pd/Al2O3 using an impregnation method to suppress the interference of H2S and to improve the ability to capture elemental mercury (Hg-0) from syngas at high temperatures. As a result, the Hg-0 capture performance was generally enhanced by the incorporation of Ce as a result of the consumption of H2S. The individual presence of H-2 or CO resulted in the formation of Pd metal responsible for Hg-0 capture and active ceria in reduced form for H2S removal, thus promoting the Hg-0 removal. Meanwhile, H2S could react with CO to form COS, which competed with Hg-0 for active sites, hence inhibiting Hg-0 capture. The effect of HCl on Hg-0 capture over PCA sorbents was found to be slightly promotional, because a small amount of Hg-0 was oxidized to HgCl2. More importantly, the spent PCA sorbents could be easily reactivated, indicating that this material is a prospective candidate for Hg-0 control from syngas.

Abstract:High -concentration mercury capture at high temperatures poses a significant challenge during the periodic shutdown of raw meal mills in cement clinker production. This study synthesized CuOx-CeOx-WO3/TiO2 nanomaterials for mercury removal using wet impregnation, laminar premixed flame (-1800 K), and flame spray pyrolysis (FSP, - 2800 K). The performance of the synthesized sorbents was evaluated for mercury removal at temperatures above the typical shutdown conditions, specifically at 450 degrees C. The results demonstrated that the FSP-synthesized sorbent maintained an adsorption efficiency of over 95 % even after 30 days of continuous absorption, while the wet -impregnated sorbent reached saturation after only 50 h. To gain insights into the adsorption mechanism, various physicochemical properties of the sorbents were characterized, including surface area, pore volume, average pore diameter, phase composition, morphology, and valence states of surface elements. The findings revealed that the FSP-synthesized sorbent exhibited a larger specific surface area and smaller primary particle sizes compared to the wet -impregnated sorbent. Furthermore, Cu atoms were dispersed within the FSP-synthesized sorbent, while CuO clusters were supported on CeO2 in the wet -impregnated sorbent. Based on the XPS results, it was determined that the FSP-synthesized sorbent utilized adsorbed molecular oxygen as the oxidizing species, whereas the wet -impregnated sorbent relied on active oxygen on the CeO2 surface.

Abstract:A novel class of magnetically responsive catalytic sorbents are proposed and synthesized with a potential application to simultaneous removal of Hg0 and NO at low temperature from the flue gases of coal-fired power plants. The catalytic sorbent consists of magnetite (Fe3O4), molecular sieve (HZSM-5), supported silver nanoparticles and catalytically reactive component of V2O5. Each of these materials provides a unique function for the purpose of capturing mercury, removing NO, and separation from fly ash. After separation from the fly ash, the spent sorbent can be regenerated and reused, leaving an uncontaminated fly ash product. The successful synthesis as designed was confirmed and properties of the catalytic sorbent were characterized by several methods. The synthesized catalytic sorbent was able to completely capture Hg0 at 150°C with a capture capacity as high as 32.4μg·g−1, while achieving 84% removal of NO at 150°C. Even at a relatively high space velocity, the catalytic sorbent achieved 97% Hg0 and 80% NO removal simultaneously, while maintaining a good stability after repetitive regeneration and recycle. The magnetically responsive catalytic composite was shown to be a promising candidate for multi-pollutant emission control from coal-fired power plants.
Elemental Mercury Removal from Flue Gas over Silver-Loaded CuS-Wrapped Fe 3 O 4 Sorbent

Abstract:In this study, CuS-wrapped Fe3O4 was selected as the support for Ag loading to prepare a recyclable magnetic Ag-based sorbent for zero-valent mercury (Hg0) removal. The synthesized Ag/3O4 sorbent showed outstanding Hg0 removal activity and SO2 resistance at 50 °C. The Hg0 capture capacity of Ag/3O4 was 18.72 μg g–1 for 5 min, which was about 3.40 and 1.11 times higher than those of bare Fe3O4 and 3O4. Exposure of Ag/3O4 to the simulated gas containing SO2 (0.05 v/v%) at 50 °C achieved the Hg0 removal efficiency of >84% during 3 h activity test. Characterization results indicated that both Cu and S sites of CuS were active sites in the reaction process, providing high Hg0 capture capacity. Meanwhile, the Ag species not only provided new activity sites but also improved the reactive activity of Cu sites due to the formation of ternary amalgam. In addition, the S sites were supplemented by SO2, which prevented the Ag active sites from being destructed by the formation of Ag2S.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Mercury Removal Mechanism of AC Prepared by One-Step Activation with ZnCl2

Abstract:In this work, activated carbon with ZnO laden on the surface was prepared by ZnCl2-one-step activation of different types of biomass (corn straw, bamboo powder and sawdust) and employed for mercury removal in the coal gas. During the activation, a part of ZnCl2 is converted into ZnO and laden on activated carbon, which greatly promotes the mercury removal performance with the presence of H2S. The ZnO content varies greatly with the content of SiO2 in the biomass due to its inactivation of ZnO and formation of Zn2SiO4. Carbonyl, which is important to mercury removal is largely retained after the activation at 500 degrees C and the amount of carbonyl seems to be positively correlated with the specific surface area (related to the lignin content). The temperature programmed desorption method was applied to further analyse the mercury adsorption in the coal gas. The results showed that ZnO and carbonyl play an important role in mercury removal, while the physisorption is not significant and only accounts for approximately 7% at 130 degrees C. The mechanism study showed that ZnO serves as a catalytic active site and catalyses the Hg-0 into HgS with the presence of H2S. While the C=O group of carbonyl acts as adsorption sites and turns into C-O after the adsorption. This study provided a promising preparation method of mercury sorbents in the coal gas, and the influence of surface functional groups was also investigated in detail.

Abstract:This research targets on the development of low-cost,high-efficiency sorbents for mercury capture in flue gas.The experiments were carried out via a bench-scale fixed-bed reactor system under 140 ℃ in N2.Six non-carbon-based carriers and various impregnating substances have been investigated.The non-carbon-based carriers themselves possess little mercury removal capability.However,their mercury removal capabilities have been extensively improved after impregnation.Some sorbents have demonstrated higher mercury capture capabilities than those of commercial active carbon sorbents (Norit Darko LH).The much enhanced performance is the joint efforts of both carrier and activation substance,among which NaI,CuCl2,CuBr2 and FeCl3 can significantly improve the mercury removal rate of sorbents.Bentonite as the carrier has distinguished ion exchange and inter-layer adsorption capacity,which enables the high mercury removal rate for most bentonite-based sorbents.Virtually 100% mercury has been removed by Al2O3-based sorbent impregnated by CuCl2 or CuBr2.The non-carbon-based sorbents have demonstrated significant application potentials.
Effect of H2S/HCl on the Removal of Elemental Mercury in Syngas over CeO2–TiO2

Abstract:CeTi sorbent (CeO2 supported on TiO2) was employed to remove elemental mercury (Hg-0) from syngas when H2S and/or HCl are present. CeTi sorbents exhibited higher Hg-0 removal efficiency compared with S-impregnated activated carbon. H2S and HCl were the most effective syngas components responsible for Hg-0 removal when they were employed separately. When 400 ppm H2S and 10 ppm HCl were introduced separately with a balance of dry N-2, over 97% of the Hg-0 was removed under the experimental conditions. However, the combination of H2S and HCl exerted a prohibitive effect on Hg-0 removal, which could be attributed to two causes: (1) the HCl consumed the surface oxygen active for Hg-0 removal, hence limiting Hg-0 removal by H2S; and (2) the H2S competed with Hg-0 for active adsorption sites, limiting the Hg-0 removal by HCl. On the basis of the temperature-programmed decomposition (TPD) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization of the sorbents, a Hg-0 removal mechanism in the presence of H2S over CeTi sorbents was proposed, suggesting that surface oxygen on the of CeTi sorbent supported the transformation of H2S to active surface sulfur, through which Hg-0 could be captured resulting in the formation of HgS. Efficient Adsorption and Desorption of Elemental Mercury by Ordered Mesoporous Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Derived from Ce-based Metal–organic Frameworks

Abstract:Metal oxide-based adsorbents not only exhibit effective elemental mercury (Hg0) removal capacity but also offer suitability for wet desorption, which is a green treatment method to avoid secondary contamination of deactivated adsorbents. Nevertheless, the limited dispersing capacity of the carrier restricts the loading of active substances, hindering further enhancement of adsorption capacity. The pore structure of adsorbent is also a key factor for wet desorption. In this work, we synthesized a hollow cerium-based metal-organic framework (CemesoMOF) as a sacrificial precursor to obtain ordered mesoporous cerium oxide (OM-CeO2) via a mesoporous genetic pyrolysis-oxidation mechanism. OM-CeO2 inherits the excellent structural properties of mesoporous MOF with better catalytic activity, exhibiting strong adsorption capacity in various atmospheres (97.6 % in pure N2, 98.8 % in N2 + H2S). Wet desorption of Hg compounds and reduction of the active site can be synergized in Na2S2O3 solution. The octahedral structure with an ordered mesoporous shell greatly facilitates the mass transfer process, as evidenced by the strong adsorption capacity and fast kinetic parameters of OM-CeO2. Density functional theory analysis reveals that the conversion reaction of adsorbed Hg has a low energy barrier on the pyrolytic-oxidized OM-CeO2 and the inhibitory effect of reactive S for Hg0 adsorption transforms into a facilitating effect. This study leverages the structural advantages of ordered mesoporous MOFs in the field of Hg adsorption and imparts reactivity through modification for efficient adsorption-desorption.

Abstract:The titania nanotubes (TNTs) which generated by hydrothermal method has been used for the removal of elemental mercury (Hg0) in the flue gases. Synergistic photocatalytic oxidation and adsorption were observed in this system, which resulted in an increasing tendency of removal efficiency. Results from the Hg0 removal experiments demonstrated that TNTs was a wonderful catalyst and adsorbent for the removal of elelmental mercury and the removal efficiency was controlled by both morphology and crystal form of the TNTs. With calcination temperature of 500 °C, the TNTs showed the best removal performance for elemental mercury.
Mercury removal efficiencies of copper halide impregnated non-carbon sorbents

Abstract:We developed mercury sorbents from 6 non-carbon based carriers with high specific surface areas. CuCl2 and CuBr2 were selected as the active substances. Sorbents developed from Al2O3, zeolite and bentonite achieved high mercury removal efficiencies in pure N2. Moisture decreased the mercury removal; while SO2 could inhibit mercury adsorption of non-carbon sorbents, especially for CuBr2 impregnated sorbents and bentonite-based sorbents. The effects of NO were related to carrier type. The mercury removal efficiencies of CuCl2 impregnated sorbents or bentonite-based sorbents was reduced by adding HCl into the flue gas. The overall effect of actual flue gas on mercury removal was a combination of the effects of the individual gas species. Among all the sorbents, CuCl2 impregnated Al2O3 demonstrated the most promising mercury capture capability and a high mercury oxidation rate in all tested gas atmospheres.

Abstract:A series of Cu-ZSM-5 molecular sieve adsorbents were prepared by the impregnation method. The experimental results revealed that the mercury removal efficiency of the 2.5 wt% CuCl2-ZSM-5 can reach up to 99%. Furthermore, both the crystal type and pore size distribution of the ZSM-5 molecular sieve remain the same after the process of copper-based active materials impregnated modification, and its specific surface area decreases as the load increases. Importantly, the surface of ZSM-5 modified by CuCl2 equips many more Cu-O functional groups, which are beneficial to the catalytic oxidation of mercury and can even oxidize Hg0 to Hg2+. The adsorption process strictly follows the Mars–Maessen reaction mechanism.

Abstract:Mercury emitted from human activities has received increasing attention because of its extreme toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation. The development of highly-efficient sorbent with abundant active sites that exhibit high affinity toward Hg0 is the key challenge for elemental mercury capture at low temperature. Herein, Cu-In spinel-type sulfides were synthesized through a hydrothermal synthesis. The Hg0 removal performance of CuxIn2-xS2 sorbents was evaluated in the temperature range of 75 °C to 175 °C. The synthesized CuxIn2-xS2 sorbents showed excellent performance for Hg0 removal at low temperatures, which perfectly matches the optimal temperature of flue gas at the downstream of desulfurization system. Hg0 removal efficiency of CuxIn2-xS2 sorbents significantly improved as the Cu proportion increased. CuInS2 sorbent showed superior mercury removal performance, the mercury removal efficiency reached 99.6% at 125 °C. O2 and NO showed a slight inhibition on Hg0 capture. The coexistence of SO2 and H2O showed no obvious negative effects on Hg0 removal. The CuInS2 sorbent displayed a superior tolerance to SO2 and H2O. TPD and XPS analyses demonstrated that the adsorbed mercury mainly existed in the form of mercuric sulfides (HgS). Hg0 adsorption over CuInS2 sorbent occurred via the Mars-Maessen mechanism. In this mechanism, Hg0 vapor was physically adsorbed on CuInS2 sorbent and then converted to HgS. This study provides future potential for applying CuxIn2-xS2 sorbents to capture gaseous mercury at low temperature.

Abstract:Nano-ZnO sorbents synthesized by a homogeneous precipitation method were characterized by BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), XRD (X-ray diffraction) as well as XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis. The adsorption of elemental mercury by nano-ZnO under nitrogen and simulated gas atmosphere was studied on a bench-scale fixed-bed apparatus. The effect of various gases on Hg0 removal performance by nano-ZnO was analyzed. The results show that the mercury removal efficiency of the nano-ZnO is relatively poor in nitrogen atmosphere. The presence of H2S promotes the Hg0 removal by nano-ZnO observably and the mercury removal efficiency can be maintained for a long time even after stopping pass into H2S. The presence of CO and H2 promote the Hg0 removal by promotion of nano-ZnO desulfurization. As the temperature increases, the formation of elemental sulfur in the surface of the nano-ZnO gradually reduces, leading to suppress the removal of Hg0.
