Abstract:S and N co-doped, few-layered graphene oxide is synthesized by using pyrimidine and thiophene as precursors for the application of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The dual-doped catalyst with pyrrolic/graphitic N-dominant structures exhibits competitive catalytic activity (10.0 mA cm(-2) kinetic-limiting current density at -0.25 V) that is superior to that for mono N-doped carbon nanomaterials. This is because of a synergetic effect of N and S co-doping. Furthermore, the dual-doped catalyst also shows an efficient four-electron-dominant ORR process, which has excellent methanol tolerance and improved durability in comparison to commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) exhibit exciting properties in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for ample electrocatalytic edging and N-doped active sites. However, low yield and high dispersity of N-GQDs prohibit their direct application as the electrocatalyst. In this paper, two facile hydrothermal progress were developed to synthesize the high-yield N-GQDs with the diameter of ca. 2-6nm and the hybrid of N-GQDs/Reduced Graphene Oxide (N-GQDs/r-GO). The results demonstrated that the N-GQDs/r-GO display remarkable electrocatalytic activity. Moreover, it can be found that the pyridinic-N plays a major role in ORR. Both the average electron transfer number and the onset potential depend on the content of pyridinic-N. The proposed synthesis strategy is facile and low-cost, serving as a feasible method for the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Various S-bonding configurations existing in sulfur-doped reduced graphene oxide (S-rGO) show different electronic structures and physiochemical properties. Thus, understanding the properties of unique S-bonding configurations requires the construction of S-rGO with only single configuration. Here, we synthesized S-rGO with a pure thiophene-sulfur configuration through a simple and low-cost hydrothermal method by simply controlling the oxidation degree of the graphene oxide (GO) precursor. Through the use of a GO precursor with a high content of C-O groups, pure doping of the thiophene-sulfur configuration in the rGO can be achieved. Further electrochemical characterization reveals an increased electrocatalytic activity of the pure thiophene-sulfur-doped S-rGO in the oxygen reduction reaction, indicating the important role of thiophene-sulfur. The present work deepens the understanding of the functions of doped nonmetal elements in carbon materials in electrocatalysis and helps in the design of high performance electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Nanostructured FeS dispersed onto N, S dual-doped carbon nanotube-graphene composite support (FeS/N,S:CNT-GR) was prepared by a simple synthetic method. Annealing an ethanol slurry of Fe precursor, thiourea, carbon nanotube, and graphene oxide at 973 K under N2 atmosphere and subsequent acid treatment produced FeS nanoparticles distributed onto the N, S-doped carbon nanotube-graphene support. The synthesized FeS/N,S:CNT-GR catalyst exhibited significantly enhanced electrochemical performance in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared with bare FeS, FeS/N,S:GR, and FeS/N,S:CNT with a small half-wave potential (0.827 V) in an alkaline electrolyte. The improved ORR performance, comparable to that of commercial Pt/C, could be attributed to synergy between the small FeS nanoparticles with a high activity and the N, S-doped carbon nanotube-graphene composite support providing high electrical conductivity, large surface area, and additional active sites.

Abstract:As a widely investigated category of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), metal-N-x-C materials are gaining increasing attention both in the rational synthesis of catalysts and in the study of structure-activity relationships. Carbon supports are important to the performance of these catalysts toward the ORR. Graphene has been used in many electrocatalysts due to its notable characteristics, such as large specific surface area, and high conductivity, but it is further limited by the tendency to agglomerate. Here, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were employed to effectively suppress the agglomeration of graphene. The binary carbon complex was loaded with iron phthalocyanine (FePc), achieving better activity than commercialized Pt/C (30 wt%) with a positive shift of half-wave potential of 20 mV after heat-treatment at 750 degrees C. SEM, TEM, XPS and XAS measurements revealed that the insertion of CNTs not only suppressed the stacking of graphene layers, but also enhanced the catalytic performance during the RRDE and Zn-air battery tests in alkaline electrolyte by exposing more ORR active sites in the Fe-Nx structure. Abstract:The commercial application of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) technology challenges the development of new electrocatalysts with excellent performance, high stability and low cost. Non-metallic materials, especially graphene-based catalysts, have become potential electrocatalysts for ORR due to their source richness and good stability. Here, we report a simple one-step hydrothermal method to synthesize S, N dual-element doped reduced graphene oxide (S, N-rGO) for ORR using graphene oxide as carbon source, thiourea as both sulfur-nitrogen source and reducing agent. The ORR performance is effectively enhanced by heteroatoms doping that increases the active sites of edge defects, introduces new S and N active sites, and adjusts the electronic struc-ture of rGO. The 0.05-S, N-rGO catalyst shows the optimal ORR activity under alkaline conditions with the onset potential of 0.793 V vs RHE, good stability and anti-tolerance toward methanol. The calculated electron transfer number of about 3.1 +/- 0.1 suggests that both the two-electron and four-electron processes occur on the catalyst.

Abstract:Replacement of rare and precious metal catalysts with low-cost and earth-abundant ones is currently among the major goals of sustainable chemistry. Herein, we report the synthesis of S, N dual-doped graphene-like carbon nanosheets via a simple pyrolysis of a mixture of melamine and dibenzyl sulfide as efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The S, N dual-doped graphene-like carbon nanosheets show enhanced activity toward ORR as compared with mono-doped counterparts, and excellent durability in contrast to the conventional Pt/C electrocatalyst in both alkaline and acidic media. A high content of graphitic-N and pyridinic-N is necessary for ORR electrocatalysis in the graphene-like carbon nanosheets, but an appropriate amount of S atoms further contributes to the improvement of ORR activity. Superior ORR performance from the as-prepared S, N dual-doped graphene-like carbon nanosheets implies great promises in practical applications in energy devices.

Abstract:Here we propose, for the first time, a new and green ethanol-thermal reaction method to synthesize high-quality and pure thiophene-sulfur doped reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which establishes an excellent platform for studying sulfur (S) doping effects on the physical/chemical properties of this material. We have quantitatively demonstrated that the conductivity enhancement of thiophene-S doped rGO is not only caused by the more effective reduction induced by S doping, but also by the doped S atoms, themselves. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the S doping is more effective in enhancing conductivity of rGO than nitrogen (N) doping due to its stronger electron donor ability. Finally, the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSCC) employing the S-doped rGO/TiO2 photoanode exhibits much better performance than undoped rGO/TiO2, N-doped rGO/TiO2 and TiO2 photoanodes. It therefore seems promising for thiophene-S doped rGO to be widely used in electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:To address aggravating environmental and energy problems, active, efficient, low-cost, and robust electrocatalysts (ECs) are actively pursued as substitutes for the current noble metal ECs. Therefore, in this study, we report the preparation of graphene flakes (GF) doped with S and N using 2-5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (S3N2) as precursor followed by the immobilization of cobalt spinel oxide (Co3O4) or manganese spinel oxide (Mn3O4) nanoparticles through a one-step co-precipitation procedure (Co/S3N2–GF and Mn/S3N2–GF). Characterization by different physicochemical techniques (Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD)) of both composites shows the preservation of the metal oxide spinel structure and further confirms the successful preparation of the envisaged electrocatalysts. Co/S3N2–GF composite exhibits the best ORR performance with an onset potential of 0.91 V vs. RHE, a diffusion-limiting current density of −4.50 mA cm−2 and selectivity for the direct four-electron pathway, matching the results obtained for commercial Pt/C. Moreover, both Co/S3N2–GF and Mn/S3N2–GF showed excellent tolerance to methanol poisoning and good stability.

Graphene Quantum Dots Doped PEDOT and Its Electrocatalytic Performance for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is key issue for fuel cells because it always produces large polarization thus result in decrease of fuel cell performance. Herein, poly( 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was explored as an efficient ORR catalyst. GQDs with size of 3-5 nm were prepared by thermal reduction at 200 degrees C. The PEDOT and GQDs@PEDOT were prepared by electropolymerization. Morphology and structure of catalysts were characterized by TEM and Raman. The catalytic activity and stability were investigated by CV, LSV, RDE and CA. Physical characterization indicated that PEDOT had a catenulate structure and GQDs were successfully combined with PEDOT. The results of electrochemical tests showed that the reduction peak current density of ORR was clearly increased after GQDs doping. Calculated by the KL equation, the number of transferred electrons at -0.6 V increased from 2.66 to 3.57, which closed to the theoretical value 4. CA tests indicated that the current density on GQDs@PEDOT electrode was 0.26 mA center dot cm(-2). The hybrid of GQDs with PEDOT can enhance the catalytic activity and stability for ORR.

Abstract:Transition metal-carbon-nitrogen catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are promising and challenging. Cu is a potential transition metal to form efficient ORR catalysts for fuel cells. Herein, a facile method is developed to synthesize a highly dispersed Cu-N-X and N-doped graphene (Cu-N-G) catalyst. The Cu-N-G catalyst shows a half-wave potential (E-1/2) of 0.859 V, which is comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.856 V), and is among the best compared with the previously reported Cu-based materials. In addition, such a catalyst shows good stability and methanol tolerance in alkaline media. A synergy of doped N (pyridinic and graphitic N) and Cu-N-X moieties as well as the pore structure are revealed to account for the enhanced ORR activity.
Electrocatalyst of Co Metal Atom Dispersed on N and S Co-Doped Tremelliform Carbon with Excellent Properties for Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Abstract:The introduction of sulfur is beneficial to regulate the electronic structure of M-Nx active site, thus improving oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) catalytic activity. Herein, we adopted a hydrogel method to synthesize ORR catalyst of Co metal atom dispersed on N and S co-doped tremelliform carbon (Co/NSTFC). The as-synthesized catalyst was characterized by TEM, XRD and BET, and results demonstrated that cobalt atoms are highly dispersed on porous N and S co-doped tremelliform carbon, and the specific surface area is as high as 1613 m2 g−1. And XPS analysis confirms the formation Co-Nx coordination bond, while the sulfur atom is successfully doped on the carbon support. The XPS analysis of N 1s and Co 2p prove that the introduction of sulfur atoms can improve the efficiency of electron transferring to graphite nitrogen, and to the vicinity of Co-Nx, thus increasing d-band center of Co metal atoms, consequently improving the oxygen reduction activity. The Co/NSTFC catalyst exhibits high-efficient ORR activity with half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.882 V in 0.1 M KOH. Furthermore, the measured number of electron transfer is close to 4, and a low yield of hydrogen peroxide and superior stability were confirmed with the Co/NSTFC catalyst. This study provides new insights into the design and synthesis of high the performant ORR catalysts and promoting the development of energy conversion.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), as metal-free carbon nanomaterials, have potential applications in electrochemical fields due to their strong chemical inertness, oxygen-rich functional groups and remarkable quantum confinement and edge effects. Herein, we demonstrate that a novel metal-free electrode composed of GQDs and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) exhibits a significant synergistic effect on enhanced catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Compared to commercially available Pt/C catalysts, enhanced electrocatalytic activity, improved long-term stability and excellent resistance to crossover effect were observed for the novel composite electrode. Interestingly, the amount of GQDs introduced is found to have an apparent effect on the positions of the reduction peaks of the electrodes.
A Comparison Study of the Electrocatalytic Sulfur Reduction Activity on Heteroatom‐Doped Graphene for Li–S Battery

Abstract:The complicated multielectron and multiphase electrocatalytic sulfur reduction reaction (SRR) occurring in the Li–S battery is demonstrated, which strongly influences the performances of this battery chemistry. Effective candidates for SRR are often based on heteroatom‐doped carbon‐based electrocatalysts. However, the electrocatalytic sulfur reduction activity of these catalysts is so far insufficiently explored. Herein, a series of graphene doped with nonmetal elements (nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur) are designed and synthesized. It is shown that nitrogen‐doped graphene has a superior SRR catalytic activity with highest electrochemical reversibility and best electrochemical kinetics for the liquid–solid two‐phase conversion from long‐chain soluble Li2Sx (4 ≤ x ≤ 8) and the solid‐state Li2S2 to Li2S conversion. The considerably improved kinetics of the liquid–solid and solid–solid phases conversion reduces the continued accumulation of lithium polysulfides in electrolyte and the passivation of the electrode, thus resulting in a significant improvement in electrochemical performance of Li–S cells. Density‐functional theory calculations demonstrates that the highest SRR performance of N/G is originated from the strongest adsorption of the sulfur species and lowest energy barriers for Li2S decomposition among three doped graphene samples. This study is believed to guide the design of efficient electrocatalysts to exceed the performance of the benchmark for Li–S battery.

Abstract:Developing highly superior precious-metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are challenging and great significance. In this study, it is reported that an efficient ORR catalysts with N and S co-doped carbon nanotubes anchored to copper (Cu) nanoclusters by mechanical grinding and high temperature heat treatment. The obtained Cu-S1-N-C electrocatalysts exhibited a high ORR performance with an onset potential (Eonest) of 0.989 V and a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.905 V (vs. RHE) in alkaline electrolyte, which was superior to that of commercial Pt/C catalyst. In contrast to N doping alone, the defect structures and active species of the catalysts were optimized by precise modulation of S-atom doping, and moreover, the introduction of S-atoms provided more thiophene-sulfur active sites. This study provides an innovative idea for designing excellent ORR catalysts.
Enhanced Electrocatalytic Performance Of Graphene Via Incorporation Of Sio2 Nanoparticles For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Close-packed graphene suffers from a low surface area, which limits its electrocatalytic activity as the counter electrode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). We report herein the synthesis of a porous graphene/SiO2 nanocomposite converted from graphene oxide mixed with SiO2 nanoparticles (similar to 12 nm) through facile hydrazine hydrate reduction. Graphene and graphene/SiO2 films prepared by drop-casting the suspensions without organic binder or surfactant onto the conductive glass substrates at room temperature without heat treatment have been applied directly as counter electrodes in DSSCs. As compared to the nonporous graphene film, the porous graphene/SiO2 composite film demonstrates much better electrocatalytic performance for the reduction of triiodide in DSSCs due to the remarkably enhanced surface area. As a consequence, the incorporation of SiO2 nanoparticles in the graphene film improves the fill factor and power conversion efficiency by 65% and 69%, respectively. With a 2.5 mu m-thick graphene/SiO2 composite film as the counter electrode, the power conversion efficiency of the DSSC achieves 6.82%, which is comparable to that for the DSSC with a Pt counter electrode.

Abstract:In this Letter, for the first time, we demonstrated the preparation of a highly efficient electrocatalyst, spinel CuCo2O4 nanoparticles supported on N-doped reduced graphene oxide (CuCo2O4/N-rGO), for an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under alkaline media. The hybrid exhibits higher ORR catalytic activity than CuCo2O4 or N-rGO alone, the physical mixture of CuCo2O4 nanoparticles and N-rGO, and Co3O4/N-rGO. Moreover, such a hybrid affords superior durability to the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Abstract:Graphene with an intrinsic sp2-conjugated carbon framework is inactive to the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) because of the weak adsorption of oxygenated species at the electroneutral carbon site. The heteroatom doping such as N into graphene is an efficient strategy to facilitate it, but most N-doped electrocatalysts are still inferior to transition metal-based catalysts because it is difficult endowing them with enough electrons to achieve a superb performance. Herein, we successfully tune carbon atoms into near-optimal adsorption sites for ORR by injection of extra electrons from a combined electron-rich source to change the π electron occupancy at carbon sites in a rationally designed core–shell structure. Ag nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped graphitized carbon shells exhibit an excellent performance of a half-wave potential of 906 mV and limited current density of 6.10 mA cm–2 in alkaline media, which is superior to most N-doped electrocatalysts. Plasmonic-Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction of Silver/Graphene Electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of paramount importance in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells due to its sluggish kinetics. In this work, a plasmon-induced hot electrons enhancement method is introduced to enhance ORR property of the silver (Ag)-based electrocatalysts. Three types of Ag nanostructures with differently localized surface plasmon resonances have been used as electrocatalysts. The thermal effect of plasmonic-enhanced ORR can be minimized in our work by using graphene as the support of Ag nanoparticles. By tuning the resonance positions and laser power, the enhancement of ORR properties of Ag catalysts has been optimized. Among these catalysts, Ag nanotriangles after excitation show the highest mass activity and reach 0.086 mA/mu g(Ag) at 0.8 V, which is almost 17 times that of a commercial Pt/C catalyst after the price is accounted. Our results demonstrate that the hot electrons generated from surface plasmon resonance can be utilized for electrochemical reaction, and tuning the resonance positions by light is a promising and viable approach to boost electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:We demonstrate here a Fe, N, and S functionalized carbon (Fe/N/S-C) derived from an iron incorporated and p-toluenesulfonate doped polypyrrole precursor on a carbon support as an efficient catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Such a strategy could effectively suppress the formation of inferior activity metal species and less active oxidized type sulfur species. The as-synthesized Fe/N/S-C catalyst exhibited a highly catalytic activity for ORR which is comparable to the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst at low overpotential range while have a better catalytic activity at the fuel cell operation potential range. In addition, this catalyst showed a higher durability and better tolerance to alcohol fuel than Pt/C catalyst.
