Abstract:Recently, photocatalytic technology has been widely used as a sustainable method to address environmental pollution issues. Herein, BiOCl/Bi-MOF (BOC/Bi-MOF) based semiconductor photocatalysts with S-scheme heterojunction were fabricated by an in situ growth method, and the photocatalytic activity of the materials was explored for CO2 reduction and pollutant degradation. As confirmed by density functional theory calculations and physiochemical characterizations, the established S-scheme heterojunction confers enhanced carrier separation efficiency and retention of redox capability to the BOC/Bi-MOF. Through an improved combination of charge separation and surface reactions, the prepared BOC/Bi-MOF efficiently reduces CO2 solely to CO. The heterojunction as catalyst is more durable and effective than any of its single component. The CO evolution rate of the optimized composite catalyst was 7.66 and 33.10 times of those of BiOCl and Bi-MOF, respectively. In addition, BOC/Bi-MOF exhibits a high efficiency in the photocatalytic degradation of the pollutant rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous environments, and the pollutant was completely removed within 20 min. Due to the generation of interfacial potential differences, the internal electric field (IEF) generation at heterogeneous interfaces facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenic charges. This work demonstrated a practical and effective route for in situ growth of S-scheme heterojunctions with high efficiencies in CO2 reduction and RhB degradation.
Constructing a Novel Bi2SiO5/BiPO4 Heterostructure with Extended Light Response Range and Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:To further extend the light response range of BiPO4 and meanwhile keep its strong photocatalytic oxidation ability, the design of a type-II heterojunction by coupling BiPO4 with a narrower band gap semiconductor of Bi2SiO5 as a novel and efficient photocatalytic catalyst has been successfully realized through a simple co-precipitate method. Moreover, under 365 nm UV light irradiation, pure BiPO4 shows no photo-activity, whereas the optimal Bi2SiO5/BiPO4 heterostructure exhibits highly enhanced photocatalytic activity than pure Bi2SiO5 in systems of photo-degradation over phenol and MB, which is 4.36 times and 1.13 times the values of pure Bi2SiO5. Experimental results reveal that the superior photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the synergetic effect of the evidently improved charge separation ability via the heterojunction, good crystallinity, expanded light absorbance and the moderate BET specific surface area.
Anion-exchange Engineering of Cookie-Like Bi2S3/Bi2MoO6 Heterostructure for Enhanced Photocatalytic Activities and Gas-Sensing Properties.

Abstract:Developing efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts will advance alternative energy technologies, ultimately curbing the environmental pollution associated with fossil fuels. In this work, Bi2S3/Bi2MoO6 photocatalysts with a heterogeneous cookie-like structure were prepared for the first time by in-situ anion exchange at relatively low temperatures. The catalysts exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity, which we attributed to the photocurrent response, a diminished recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and the existence of a large heterojunction interface. These governing factors were discerned by photoelectrochemical measurements, calculated energy band positions and photoluminescence spectra. Bi2S3/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites also exhibit better performance in response to gas than bare Bi2MoO6 according to gas sensing tests. Our work, in relaying a feasible method to synthesize Bi2S3/Bi2MoO6-based heterojunction superstructures, and documents a universal preparation method of synthetic heterogeneous complexes, and provides necessary groundwork for the development of next generation semiconductor photocatalytic technology and gas sensor.
A High-Performance Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 P-N Heterojunction Photocatalyst Induced by Phase Transition of Bi2O3

Abstract:In this work, Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated via a facile one-step synthesis using Bi(NO3)(3) and nano-SiO2 as precursors. With the increasing amount of SiO2, alpha-Bi2O3 gradually transferred into beta-Bi2O3, and Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 p-n heterojunction was obtained at the same time. The as-prepared samples were systematically characterized by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 heterojunction photocatalysts exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than alpha-Bi2O3 on the degradation of organic pollutants under simulated sunlight irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the larger specific surface area, the larger contact angle, the formation of beta-Bi2O3 and construction of p-n heterojunction. More importantly, the phase transition mechanism of Bi2O3 in Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 heterojunction photocatalyst was proposed, which is significant for the theoretical study and application of photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Construction of vertical heterostructures by stacking two‐dimensional (2D) layered materials via chemical bonds can be an effective strategy to explore advanced solar‐energy‐conversion systems. However, it remains a great challenge to fabricate such heterostructures based on conversional oxide‐based compounds, as they either do not possess a 2D layered structure or are not suitable for epitaxial growth due to large lattice mismatch. Here, a vertical heterostructure of bismuth oxyhalide semiconductors fabricated through a heteroepitaxial anion exchange method is reported. Monolayer Bi2WO6 is epitaxially grown on the exposed surface of BiOI to inhibit photocorrosion and introduce active sites. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that electrons generated under visible‐light irradiation can directly transfer to surface coordinatively unsaturated (CUS) Bi atoms, which contribute to the adsorption and activation of reactant molecules. As a result, the Bi2WO6/BiOI vertical heterostructures exhibit significantly enhanced visible‐light‐driven NO oxidation activity compared with BiOI and Bi2WO6.
Enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance of a novel heterostructured Bi4O5Br2/Bi24O31Br10/Bi2SiO5 photocatalyst

Abstract:A novel Bi4O5Br2/Bi24O31Br10/Bi2SiO5 heterostructure photocatalyst was synthesized successfully by in situ ion exchange reaction using BiOBr microspheres as the starting material for the first time. The heterostructured semiconductor showed superior photocatalytic activity in visible light degradation of phenol compared to pure BiOBr and other reported Bi-based photocatalysts. The exceptional photocatalytic activity of the heterostructured system can be attributable to the well-aligned straddling band-gap structures which can promote the flow of charge carriers via the heterojunction, extended light absorbance and a large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area. The present work also proves that engineering of heterojunctions with high matching of lattices and well-aligned straddling band-structures is a significantly efficient way to achieve photocatalysts with high photocatalytic activity. Ion Exchange Synthesis of Bi2MoO6/BiOI Heterojunctions for Photocatalytic Degradation and Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:In this study, flower-like Bi2MoO6/BiOI heterostructure photocatalysts were synthesized via an anion exchange method using BiOI as precursor. The composition of Bi(2)MoO6(/)BiOI can be easily controlled by adjusting the MoO42-/I- molar ratio. Photocatalytic activity studies based on the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) show that Bi2MoO6/BiOI=50% photocatalyst exhibited the best performance under visible light excitation. The radical scavengers test demonstrated that holes was the main reactive species for the degradation of RhB, and center dot O2- also took part in the photodecomposition process. Photoelectrochemical measurement reveals that the Bi2MoO6/BiOI=50% exhibit enhanced carrier densities, charge separation and photocurrent compared with the original Bi2MoO6 and BiOI. Our results show that bismuth-based heterojunctions fabricated through the anion exchange method could be a cost-effective approach to improve the photocatalytic activity and photoelectrochemical performance of BiOI.

Abstract:A novel Bi2SiO5/Bi12SiO20 heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized by microwave hydrothermal synthesis using Bi(NO3)3 and nano-SiO2 as precursors. The as-prepared Bi2SiO5/Bi12SiO20 heterojunction exhibited more efficient charge separation and higher ultraviolet (UV) light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of rhodamine B (Rh-B) and methylene blue (MB). The optimal reaction rate constant of the Bi2SiO5/Bi12SiO20 heterojunction photocatalyst is 3 and 4.3 times higher than that of Bi12SiO20, respectively. Experimental results reveal that the high photocatalytic performance of Bi2SiO5/Bi12SiO20 could be attributed to its larger specific surface area, good crystallinity, smaller particle morphology, and remarkable improvement of charge separation ability via the heterojunctions. The influence of Bi2SiO5/Bi12SiO20 on the charge separation efficiency and optical properties was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and photocurrent analysis. Basis on DMPO-ESR spin trapping and radical scavenger experiments, the active species produced from the Bi2SiO5/Bi12SiO20 heterojunction under UV light irradiation were superoxide radicals (O2 −) and holes (h+). Additionally, the possible photocatalytic mechanism of the Bi2SiO5/Bi12SiO20 heterojunction was discussed, and finally, a photocatalytic degradation mechanism based on multiple charge transfer channels was proposed. Furthermore, the Bi2SiO5/Bi12SiO20 heterojunction sample still displayed a high photochemical stability even after 5 times of recycling.

Abstract:Constructing a heterojunction photocatalyst is a significant method to enhance photocatalytic activity because it can promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. Herein, amorphous/crystalline contact Bi2S3/Bi4O7 heterostructure was successfully synthesized by in-situ sulfidation of Bi4O7. The amorphous Bi2S3 is diffused on the surface of Bi4O7 rod, enhancing the visible light response and improving the transport of photogenerated carriers. Various characterizations confirm that the rapid separation of photogenerated carriers leads to increased photocatalytic performance. The optimized Bi2S3/Bi4O7 heterostructure photocatalyst (BiS-0.15) exhibits the highest Cr(VI) reduction (0.01350 min−1) and RhB oxidation (0.08011 min−1) activity, which is much higher than that of pure Bi4O7 and Bi2S3/Bi4O7 mixture under visible light irradiation. This work provides new insights into the construction of efficient novel photocatalysts.

Abstract:In this work, we provide a facile method to synthesize Bi2O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction by a two-step hydrothermal. Bi2O4 micro-rods are in-situ generated on the surface of Bi2WO6 microspheres. Compared to pure Bi2WO6, the photocatalytic activity for the Bi2O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction was enhanced 5 folds in degradation of Rhodamine B. In the degradation of Methyl Orange, the enhanced factor could reach to 90 folds under visible light. The superior activity could be attributed to the rapid separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carries, which could be proved by photocurrent test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Moreover, the active material trapping experiments proved that ·O2− and h+ are the main active species in the degradation process. The present work provides a new sight for the fabricating of visible light-driven photocatalyst with high efficiency.

Abstract:Bismuth-based nanostructured materials have attracted great interest in a wide range of applications. In the present work, 3D (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical microspheres self-assembled by nanosheets were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. By using a facile anion-exchange strategy, (BiO)(2)CO3/amorphous Bi2S3 heterostructures were constructed through the controlled chemical reaction between (BiO)(2)CO3 microspheres and Na2S in an aqueous solution. The as-prepared samples were systematically characterized by XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, UV-vis DRS and PL techniques. The heterostructured samples were applied for photocatalytic removal of ppb-level NO in air under visible light irradiation. The pure (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical microspheres exhibited decent visible light photocatalytic activity due to the surface reflecting and scattering effect. Amorphous Bi2S3 showed no photocatalytic activity due to narrow band gap. By hybridization of (BiO)(2)CO3 microspheres with amorphous Bi2S3 on the surface, 3D hierarchical (BiO)(2)CO3/amorphous Bi2S3 heterostructures were constructed, which demonstrated increased solar light absorption and highly enhanced visible photocatalytic activity and stability. The enhanced performance can be directly ascribed to the increased visible light utilization, promoted charge separation arising from the well-matched band structure and accelerated reactants transfer resulting from special 3D hierarchical structure. The present work opens a new avenue for modification of wide-band gap semiconductor with amorphous components, which could reduce the further thermal treatment and production cost.

Abstract:Novel, one-dimensional Bi2O3-Bi14MoO24 heterostructures with high interface quality were synthesized by high temperature calcination of Bi2MoO6-Bi(OHC2O4)center dot 2H(2)O precursors in air at 400 degrees C for 2 h. Bi14MoO24 grew on the Bi2O3 porous rods by crystallographic-oriented epitaxial growth, which increased the interface quality and then provided the smallest penetration barrier for electron-hole pair transfer between Bi2O3-Bi14MoO24 interfaces. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared products was evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and phenol under solar/visible light irradiation. The results show that Bi2O3-Bi14MoO24 heterostructures display higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure phase Bi2O3 and Bi14MoO24, and 100% phenol (10 mg L-1) can be degraded in 80 min under visible light irradiation using the Bi2O3-Bi14MoO24 (DS-2) heterostructure as photocatalyst. This enhanced photocatalytic performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of the suitable band alignment of the Bi2O3 and Bi14MoO24, high interface quality and one-dimensionally ordered nanostructure. Radical scavenger experiments proved that the photogenerated holes and O-center dot(2)- play key roles during the photodegradation process. This work offers an effective route to the design and fabrication of the junction structures with high interface quality for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:It is very significant to develop CH3COO(BiO) (denoted as BiOAc) based photocatalysts for the removal of pollutants due to its non-toxicity and availability. We previously reported that BiOAc exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under UV light irradiation. Herein, by an ion exchange approach, BiOI/BiOAc heterojunction could be easily obtained. The as-prepared heterojunction possessed enhanced photodegradation activity for multiple dyes including RhB and methyl orange (MO) under visible light illumination in comparison with individual materials. Good visible-light photocatalytic activity of the heterojunction could be attributed to the increased visible light response, effective charge transfer from the modified band position and close interfacial contact due to partial ion exchange method. Abstract:Novel Bi-based photocatalysts play an increasing role in dealing with environmental pollution and resource shortages. Among these Bi-based materials, BiOBr and Bi2WO6 have gained intensive attraction due to the appropriate energy band alignments and their anisotropic crystal structure. 0D/2D BiOBr/Bi2WO6 heterojunction was constructed by depositing BiOBr nanoparticles on few-layer Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The structure, optical property, and micromorphology of samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, UV-vis DRS, SEM, TEM, and AFM. The photoluminescence, photocurrent density, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as well as the transient surface photovoltage (TSPV) were performed to explore the transfer of photoinduced charge carriers. The photocatalytic efficiency of the heterojunction is much improved, about 2.67 folds higher than that of pristine Bi2WO6. The fast separation and migration and the prolonged lifetime of photogenerated carriers in the BiOBr/Bi2WO6 heterojunction are validated by photoelectrochemical tests. The influence factors, versatility, and reusability of the heterojunction are also evaluated. Radical trapping test reveals that h(+) and O-2(-) are predominant active species and make a major contribution to the photoactivity of the BiOBr/Bi2WO6 heterojunction. The formed energy-band bending, the built-in electric field, and the S-scheme charge transfer strategy are thermodynamically and kinetically favorable for the photoactivity and stability of the heterojunction.

Abstract:Heterojunction composite construction has been considered as a viable method to improve photocatalytic performance. In this study, a kind of highly efficient 2D/0D Bi2WO6/BiOCl p-n heterojunction film with boosted photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance was synthesized on Bi plate via in-situ electrochemical ion-exchange hydrothermal method. Furthermore, the XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM and other techniques were carried out to evaluate as-synthesized films. Our findings indicate that Bi2WO6/BiOCl composite film, with close border contact between Bi2WO6 and BiOCl surfaces, should be conducive to achieve excellent separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Finally, the formation mechanism of p-n heterostructure is demonstrated using XPS core-level alignment method. This work should offer new perspectives into the immobilization method of efficient powder catalysts and the photocatalytic CO2 reduction mechanism of p-n heterojunction films.

Abstract:One of the basic challenges of CO2 photoreduction is to develop efficient photocatalysts, and the construction of heterostructure photocatalysts with intimate interfaces is an effective strategy to enhance interfacial charge transfer for realizing high photocatalytic activity. Herein, a novel UiO-66/Bi4O5Br2 heterostructure photocatalyst was constructed by depositing UiO-66 nanoparticles with octahedral morphology over the Bi4O5Br2 nanoflowers assembled from the Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets via an electrostatic self-assembly method. A tight contact interface and a built-in electric field were formed between the UiO-66 and the Bi4O5Br2, which was conducive to the photo-electrons transfer from the Bi4O5Br2 to the UiO-66 and the formation of a type-II heterojunction with highly efficient charge separation. As a result, the UiO-66/Bi4O5Br2 exhibited improved photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance with a CO generation rate of 8.35 μmol h−1 g−1 without using any sacrificial agents or noble co-catalysts. This work illustrates an applicable tactic to develop potent photocatalysts for clean energy conversion.
Construction of novel BiOIO3/MoS2 2D/2D heterostructures with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Abstract:A novel BiOIO3/MoS2 (BM-x) 2D/2D heterostructure was firstly constructed by hybridizing BiOIO3 with MoS2 through solvothermal process. The formation of BM-x 2D/2D heterostructure with higher specific surface area and larger interfaces can offer ample channel for the transmission of charge, confirmed by SEM, TEM, BET and EIS. Introduction of MoS2 could improve light harvesting abilities of BM-x composites, which was demonstrated by DRS. Moreover, a staggered type-Ⅱ heterojunction and built-in electric field between BiOIO3 and MoS2 were formed, facilitating the separation of photogenerated carriers, proven via transient photocurrent response and PL. The BM-x composites could be applied to the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Above properties endow BM-x composites enhanced photocatalytic efficiencies for degradation of RhB than pure BiOIO3 under simulated solar-light irradiation, and the BM-1.0 composite showed the optimized degradation rate constant (0.04189 min−1), which is 5.2 times higher than that of pristine BiOIO3 (0.00811 min−1). Free radical scavenging experiments reveal that h+ and •O2 − are primarily responsible for the photocatalytic degradation of RhB in this system, and a possible type-Ⅱ heterojunction mechanism with dye sensitization was proposed.

Abstract:For enhancing the photocatalytic performance, efficient separation and rapid migration of photogenerated charge carriers are essential. This study adopted a hydrothermal technique followed by calcination to remove the template to prepare a novel IOBi2WO6/Bi2O3 S-scheme heterojunction with a distinctive inverse opal (IO) structure. Under simulated solar irradiation, the obtained IOBi2WO6/Bi2O3 heterojunction demonstrated improved photocatalytic performance toward photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution. Among all the samples, the IOBi2WO6/15Bi2O3 possessed the highest photocatalytic H2 evolution activity and reached up to 312.56 mol g-1h−1, which was 9.7 and 3.4 times higher than that of the pristine Bi2WO6 (32.15 mol g-1h−1) and IOBi2WO6 (92.15 mol g-1h−1), respectively. Moreover, the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of IOBi2WO6/15Bi2O3 is 8.9 % at 420 nm.The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the synergy between the formation of the Bi2WO6/Bi2O3 S-scheme heterojunction and the construction of the IO structure. Based on the S-scheme mechanism, the mechanism and driving force of charge carriers’ transfer and separation in this study were investigated and discussed in detail by a density functional theory (DFT) calculation. This study demonstrates a very promising protocol to prepare the three-dimensional efficient charge carriers’ separation and fast migration heterojunction photocatalyst for practical applications.

Abstract:Novel, one-dimensional Bi2O3–Bi14MoO24 heterostructures with high interface quality were synthesized by high temperature calcination of Bi2MoO6–Bi(OHC2O4)·2H2O precursors in air at 400 °C for 2 h. Bi14MoO24 grew on the Bi2O3 porous rods by crystallographic-oriented epitaxial growth, which increased the interface quality and then provided the smallest penetration barrier for electron–hole pair transfer between Bi2O3–Bi14MoO24 interfaces. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared products was evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and phenol under solar/visible light irradiation. The results show that Bi2O3–Bi14MoO24 heterostructures display higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure phase Bi2O3 and Bi14MoO24, and 100% phenol (10 mg L−1) can be degraded in 80 min under visible light irradiation using the Bi2O3–Bi14MoO24 (DS-2) heterostructure as photocatalyst. This enhanced photocatalytic performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of the suitable band alignment of the Bi2O3 and Bi14MoO24, high interface quality and one-dimensionally ordered nanostructure. Radical scavenger experiments proved that the photogenerated holes and ˙O2− play key roles during the photodegradation process. This work offers an effective route to the design and fabrication of the junction structures with high interface quality for photocatalytic applications.
