Abstract:Uniform temperature distribution within solid catalyst particles is important to achieving low coke formation in a high-temperature reaction. However, the issue of uneven temperature distribution exists in most fixed-bed catalytic reaction systems. Here, we developed a microwave-assisted system and used it in catalytic dehydration of glycerol for sustainable production of acrolein. A coated microwave absorbing catalyst WO3/ZrO2@SiC was prepared and employed in the catalytic reactions. The effects of reaction temperature, ZrO2/SiC ratio, and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) on glycerol conversion and arcolein selectivity were examined. Experimental results showed that the microwave heating proved to be more effective than the conventional electric heating for glycerol dehydration to acrolein at lower temperature. The acrolein selectivity reached over 70% with complete glycerol conversion at 250 degrees C by microwave heating. The catalyst acidity was greatly influenced by ZrO2/SiC ratio, which in turn determined the acrolein selectivity. More importantly, much better catalyst stability was obtained in the microwave-heating process than the electric-heating process. In addition, the microwave-heating system was effective for the in-situ regeneration of deactivated catalyst.

Abstract:Conventional fixed-bed reactors have the issue of uneven temperature distribution within the catalyst bed, which influences product selectivity and catalyst stability. Microwave irradiation can realize uniform and bulk heating due to its unique penetration capability. Here, a microwave fixed-bed reactor was developed and applied in a gas-phase glycerol dehydration reaction. Nine microwave-absorbing binary metal oxide catalysts were used to verify the versatility of microwave reactors in gas-solid reactions. Compared with an electric-heating reactor, much better catalyst stability was obtained in a microwave reactor for all of the catalysts. Moreover, no obvious change in catalyst stability was observed with increasing reactor size. Numerical simulation was adopted to explore the intensification mechanism of microwave heating. The largest temperature difference in the microwave reactor was around 10 degrees C, much smaller than that in the electric-heating reactor which reached 57 degrees C. The electric field distribution within the penetration depth of microwave irradiation was homogeneous, resulting in uniform temperature distribution in the microwave reactor and hence good catalyst stability.

Abstract:Microwave heating represents a potentially faster and more efficient and selective technology for the hydrothermal treatment of biomass in comparison to conventional heating based technologies. Specifically, microwave heating allows not only achieving a better process control, but also lower temperatures to be used. Furthermore, as water is highly effective in microwave energy absorption, the combination of hydrothermal conditions together with microwave assisted heating offers an interesting new technology for the design and development of novel hydrothermal processes. Herein, this work summarises some recent advances achieved at the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence, Chemistry Department, University of York (UK) (https://www.york.ac.uk/chemistry/research/green/research/publications/), regarding the use of microwave technology for the valorisation of biomass under hydrothermal conditions, including microwave-assisted hydrothermal liquefaction (MA-HTL), decomposition (MA-HTD) and fractionation (MAF). These processes are very timely and the work conducted represents a step-change in biomass preprocessing technologies, helping the development of novel routes for biomass valorisation.

Abstract:The increase in biodiesel production worldwide makes valorisation of the by-product of this process (glycerol) essential for economic sustainability. Hence, conversion of bioglycerol to platform chemicals such as (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methanol (solketal), a fuel additive, is highly desirable. In this study, glycerol is converted to solketal using a sulfonic acid-functionalized aromatic carbonaceous material (SAFACAM) bearing ancillary hydrophilic groups and acting as a heterogeneous catalyst under microwave irradiation. For the production of solketal by acetalization, an optimal glycerol:acetone molar ratio of 1:5 was recorded. Using a catalyst dosage of 8 wt% at 70 °C for just 10 mins under microwave irradiation (50 W, 100 psi) returned a 98.1 ± 0.4 % conversion of bioglycerol with 100 % selectivity to solketal. The activation energy of the acetalization reaction was determined to be 35.8 kJ mol −1 . Catalyst recovery was probed over six cycles, with a modest loss in activity (82.3 ± 0.2 % conversion in the sixth cycle) resulting from limited active site leaching, as confirmed by EDS data.

Abstract:Catalytic hydration of acrolein to 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA) is a key step for the chemical pro-duction of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) from renewable glycerol. However, a main issue of low reaction rate and long reaction time exists in the conventional hydration process. Here, we developed a microwave-assisted system for the efficient conversion of acrolein to 3-HPA. Simultaneous cooling method was adopted to maintain continuous microwave irradiation and meanwhile stable temperature during the reaction. The effects of catalyst type, temperature, catalyst loading and microwave power on acrolein conversion and 3-HPA selectivity were examined. Kinetic study showed that microwave irradi-ation could help for the reduction in activation energy, which led to acceleration in reaction rate during the acrolein hydration process. In addition, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the adsorption and reaction behavior of reactants molecules on the catalyst are consistent with the experi-mental results, which confirm the intensification effect of the microwave field.(c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This work firstly explores the feasibility of using a novel microwave-assisted, catalysed, hydrothermal process for the valorisation of brewers' spent grains (BSGs), examining the effects of the temperature (180-250 degrees C), pressure (50-130 bar), reaction time (0-2 h) and catalyst amount (Ni-Co/Al-Mg, 0-0.25 g cat/g biomass). This route turned out to be a very promising approach for the production of bio-fuels (bio-oil and bio-char) and platform chemicals (sugar rich aqueous solutions) in a single unit, helping the development of an innovative bio-refinery around BSGs. The overall conversion and the yields to gas, aqueous fraction and bio-oil varied by 31-68%, 10-33%, 9-48% and 4-14%, respectively. The bio-oil was made up a complex mixture of phenols (0-26%), ketones (0-80%), aldehydes (0-57%), carboxylic acids (0-18%) and nitrogen compounds (0-76%). The proportions of C, H, N and O in the bio-oil varied as follow: 15-61 wt%, 5-10 wt%, 1-6 wt% and 26-77 wt%, respectively, which shifted its higher heating value (HHV) between 9 and 27 MJ/kg. The liquid fraction comprised a mixture of DP > 6 oligosaccharides (67-98 C-wt.%), DP2-6 oligosaccharides (0-10 C-wt.%), saccharides (0.2-7 C-wt.%), carboxylic acids (0-7 C-wt.%) and furans (0-27 C-wt.%). The spent solid after the experiments resembled an energetic like bio-char product, whose proportions of C, H, O and N varied by 35-72 wt%, 4-8 wt%, 1-4 wt% and 18-57 wt% and its HHV shifted between 9 and 32 MJ/kg. The optimisation of the process revealed that using a temperature of 250 degrees C and a pressure of 125 bar for 2 h, it is possible to convert the original material into high-energy biofuels: (8%) bio-oil (26 MJ/kg) and (35%) bio-char (32 MJ/kg); together with a (31%) saccharide-rich (> 99 C-wt.%) aqueous solution, thus converting this process into a very promising approach to achieve an environmentally-friendly and integral valorisation of brewers' spent grains.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) or hydrous pyrolysis is a thermochemical de-polymerisation process in conversion of wet biomass into bio-crude oil and chemicals at moderate temperatures and high pressures. The notable applications of these bio-oils are in boilers, engines and turbines for generation of heat and power or for extraction of chemicals. In this HTL process, experiments were conducted using rice straw as biomass, glycerol as co-solvent and sodium carbonate as catalyst. The effect of temperature (220°C, 240°C, 260°C, 280°C), reaction time (15 min, 30 min, 45 min, 60 min), catalyst dosage (5wt%, 12.5wt%), biomass to water ratio (1:5, 1:10) and glycerol to water ratio (0:10, 5:5) were systematically studied and analysed for evaluation of process performance in terms of yield and selectivity of bio-oil. Central composite design (CCD) was further used to optimize the process variables like temperature, reaction time, catalyst, solvent and co-solvent. Finally, the optimal operating conditions of 12.5 wt% of Na2CO3 at 260°C for 60 min at equal ratios of water and glycerol are established using CCD and were experimentally verified. The obtained product was analysed using elemental analysis, FTIR, GC-MS for determination of properties and it was found that the main compounds constitute ketones, alcohols, phenolics and aldehydes as main compounds in the HTL process.

Abstract:Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to propylene glycol represents one of the most promising technologies for biomass conversion to chemicals. However, conventional hydrogenolysis processes are often carried out under harsh H-2 pressures and temperatures, leading to intensive energy demands, fast catalyst deactivation, and potential safety risks during H-2 handling. Catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) displays high energy and atom efficiency. We have studied a series novel solid catalysts for CTH of glycerol. In this work, detailed studies have been conducted on energy optimization, tech-economic analysis, and environmental impact for both processes. The key finding is that relatively less energy demands and capital investment are required for CTH process. CO2 emission per production of propylene glycol is much lower in the case of transfer hydrogenolysis. The outcome of this study could provide useful information for process design and implementation of novel hydrogenolysis technologies for other energy and environmental applications.
Green Synthesis of Biobased Glycerol Levulinate Ketal in a Continuous Flow Reactor: Optimization, Kinetics and Simulation

Abstract:The development of novel biobased chemicals is of great research significance in promoting the high -value utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. Methyl levulinate glycerol ketal (MLK) as a novel biobased chemical can be used as a solvent and applied in the fields of polyurethane and coatings. In this paper, the process of continuous preparation of MLK from methyl levulinate (ML) and glycerol (GLY) was studied. The effects of different factors on the yield of MLK and the conversion of GLY were investigated, and the optimum reaction conditions were reaction temperature 140 degrees C, catalyst HZSM-5 0.50 g, ML to GLY molar ratio 4:1 and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 1.34 h-1. Under these conditions, the conversion of GLY was 97.00% and the yield of MLK reached 94.70%. The kinetic experiments were further carried out at the temperature range of 130 degrees C to 150 degrees C, and the kinetic results showed that the activation energy and the pre -exponential factor were 64.26 kJ & sdot;mol-1 and 9.05 x 109 mol & sdot;g- 1 & sdot;s- 1, respectively. Meanwhile, the production efficiency in the continuous process was 1.91 g & sdot;h-1 with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 9.00 h- 1, suggesting a higher catalytic efficiency and catalytic activity than that in the batch process. On this basis, a process simulation of the continuous MLK preparation process was further conducted, and the techno-economic evaluation of the process was performed to provide a theoretical reference for the development of the biobased MLK process.

Abstract:Abstract The photocatalytic process is a possible way for obtaining value-added chemicals from glycerol (Gly). The kinetic and mechanism of transformation of glycerol are explored as a function of several operating parameters (type of the catalyst, pH, substrate concentration, fluorination of the catalyst surface). Different transformation rates are observed for glycerol on pristine P25 and Merck powders. By use of Degussa P25, the phototransformation rate shows a sharp maximum at low glycerol concentration, thus deviating from Langmuir-Hinshelwood behavior. Abstract:Glycerol is an oversupplied commodity from biodiesel production with beneficial properties for the synthesis of versatile utility biochemicals. The functional properties of glycerol with three hydroxyl groups could be tailored toward producing fuels such as hydrogen, syngas, C1-C3 hydrocarbon fuel, bio-oil and methane. This study elucidates the reported thermochemical pathways such as pyrolysis, gasification, combustion, steam and aqueous reforming, and supercritical water gasification for fuel production from biodiesel-derived glycerol. The mechanism of these pathways, process conditions, catalytic integration, and limitations were investigated. Also, reactor strategies such as fixed bed reactors, fluidized bed, and solar reactor strategies used for the thermochemical valorization of glycerol was discussed. The studies revealed that hydrogen up to 70% yield could be generated from glycerol using noble metals and nickel-based catalysts. Catalyst deactivation due to coking could be minimized by the addition of alkaline metals, which discourages methanation reaction. Reaction parameters such as temperature, catalyst amount, time on stream, and glycerol/water or steam ratio influence the product distribution. The glycerol steam reforming is more energy-intensive and requires temperatures in the range of 450–1000 °C, whereas the aqueous reforming is propagated in the range of 180–250 °C. The circulating fluidized bed reactors limit coking due to self-regeneration of the catalysts in situ, however, they are cost-intensive. Life cycle assessment analysis revealed that supercritical water reforming (SCWR) of glycerol offers a sustainable pathway to reduce CO2 by 95% and integration of SCWR in biodiesel plants to produce hydrogen for heating can realize a net present value between 7.70 and 15.70 million USD. Further studies to analyze the economic impact of the individual pathways to optimize the production of fuels from glycerol are required. It is hoped that this study will engage industries and researchers to increasingly use glycerol as a substrate for the production of fuels for transportation.

Abstract:Current biorefineries are predominantly based around single feedstock sources, extensively hydrolysed using multiple unit operations. The hydrolysate is generally converted to a single product by one of a few well-characterised organisms. Here, we report on a new approach to the biorefinery, combining a rapid, microwave heated, one-step depolymerisation process, with a yeast, Metschnikowia pulcherrima which is able to metabolise an array of oligo- and monosaccharides. During the investigation it was found that the microwave hydrolysis process was able to solubilize upto 50% wheat straw biomass by weight, mainly as oligosaccharides though also containing mixtures of pentose, hexose and anhydro-sugars with concentrations of up to 2 g L-1. However, a fine balance between elevated monosaccharide yields and the production of inhibitive compounds had to be struck with optimal microwave hydrolytic conditions found to be 190 °C. Further testing utilizing several different types of lignocellulosic biomass demonstrated it was possible to attain ~65% carbon efficiency in the conversion of Laminaria saccharina to hydrolysis products. The system was scaled to 600 mL using DDGS successfully solubilizing 66% of the feedstock, producing 33 g L-1 hydrolysate. M. pulcherrima grew well on this hydrolysate in a controlled stirred tank bioreactor (2L), yielding 8.38 g L-1 yeast biomass, a yeast biomass coefficient of 0.25. This presents an exciting, feedstock agnostic, pathway to the energy efficient production of a wide variety of commercially valuable chemical products without the need for extensive pre and post processing technologies.

Abstract:•Microwave pyrolysis can be successfully applied to a wide range of lignocellulosic biomass types.•The production of volatile organic matter takes place at those temperatures coinciding with a maximal rate of heating.•The mild conditions at which microwave pyrolysis occurs preserves largely the functionality of obtained chemicals.•Through a microwave-assisted hydrolysis of biomass a range of products can be recovered in a minimal amount of steps.•Through carbon and mass balances the sustainability metrics of the pyrolysis are determined.

Abstract:This study presents a continuous-flow process for the valorization of glycerol, a byproduct of the biofuel industry, into glycidol and its derivatives. The method ensures safety and allows for easy production of glycidol on a gram scale, even in the presence of hazardous substances such as hydrogen chloride and acetic acid. Moreover, this continuous-flow method can be easily integrated with downstream synthetic steps to produce value-added derivatives, which have potential applications in the fields of medicinal and polymer chemistry. The comprehensive evaluation of sustainability metrics, encompassing green indicators, a techno-economic analysis, and a life cycle assessment, substantiates the environmental benefits of the technology, and showed that the method is environmentally friendly and has the potential to enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability in industrial processes.
