Waste and Biomass Valorization
Abstract:Microalgae have been regarded as a sustainable feedstock to produce biofuel to meet the serious problems arising from the depletion of fossil fuels. However, the pure cultivation of microalgae for biofuel production is commercially infeasible due to the high costs associated with culturing and harvesting microalgae in this way. The coupling of microalgae biofuel production with wastewater treatment provides a method of circumventing this deadlock and highlights the necessity of research on the interactions between microalgae and wastewater-borne microorganisms. This paper reviews the interactions between microalgae and other microorganisms, such as microzooplankton, bacteria, fungi, algae, and viruses, and the mechanisms involved in these interactions that have been identified in recent years. Several factors affecting the outcomes of co-culture and wastewater-culture are involved. At present, the interactions between microalgae and wastewater-borne microorganisms are still unclear and merit further study.
