Research on the Effect of High-Speed Rail Network on the Industrial Division of Labor in Chinese Urban Agglomerations

Abstract:The ideal of urban agglomeration in China can be traced back to the 1980s, when the Yangtze River Delta, Bohai Rim, and Zhujiang Delta economic zones were proposed, but the development of urban agglomeration entered the national strategic level after 2006. As the main form of future urbanization, the development of urban agglomerations is often given more meanings, such as promoting coordinated regional development, forming regional forms of industrial competitiveness and participating in global competition, or forming diverse urban forms to meet people’s living needs. Therefore, this paper selects the prefecture-level city data of 13 urban agglomerations in China from 2006 to 2018, China Statistical Yearbook, China Urban Statistical Yearbook, China Regional Economic Statistical Yearbook, and other relevant data, and uses the entropy value assignment method and double difference method to investigate the effect of the high-speed rail network on the industrial division of labor in China's urban agglomerations. The results show that: compared with the city pairs without the high-speed railway, the level of the industrial division of labor in the city pairs with high-speed railway increases by 1.07%; the opening of the high-speed railway promotes the level of the industrial division of labor in n urban agglomerations with more than three nodes; the 100-200km range is the optimal radius for the opening of the high-speed railway to promote the level of the industrial division of labor among cities. In addition, we propose to accelerate the layout of the transportation network in urban agglomerations, pay attention to the siphoning effect of large cities on peripheral cities, and focus on the development of small and medium-sized cities in urban agglomerations adjacent to large cities or remote areas, to help improve the industrial division of labor in urban agglomerations.
