Abstract:The solar-driven coproduction of hydrogen (H-2) fuel and value-added chemicals from biomass derivatives represents a promising strategy to address the energy and environment issues. Herein, the Ni-Au bimetal modified g-C3N4 photocatalyst was synthesized by a step-by-step photodeposition method and used to promote the photocatalytic coproduction of H-2 and furfural from furfural-alcohol aqueous solution. In the designed Ni Au/g-C3N4 photocatalyst, g-C3N4 was the main light-harvesting material for generating electron-hole pairs which were separated efficiently by metal/g-C3N4 interface, plasmonic Au nanoparticles further increased the light utilization efficiency, and Ni acted as both electron trap and the active sites for H-2 evolution. Beneficial from the synergy of three components, the Ni-Au/g-C3N4 photocatalyst exhibited 3-folds activity of Au/CN sample toward photocatalytic coproduction of H-2 and furfural. Both photoluminescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical measurements demonstrated the more efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers in Ni-Au/g-C3N4 photocatalyst. In situ electron spin resonance revealed the generations of hydroxyl radical and carbon center radical in the photocatalytic reaction. Based on the systematic characterizations, a photocatalytic mechanism was proposed and discussed. This work provides a rational construction of photocatalysts for coproduction of H-2 and value-added chemicals from biomass derivatives as well as explores the synergistic effect of bimetallic cocatalyst on enhancing the photocatalysis. Abstract:The solar-driven H2 production from water splitting with efficient photocatalysts is a sustainable strategy to meet the clean energy demand and alleviate the approaching environmental issues caused by fossil fuel consumption. Among various semiconductor-based photocatalysts, the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has attracted much attention due to its advantages of long term-stability, visible light response, low cost, and easy preparation. However, the intrinsic Coulombic attraction between charge carriers and the interlayer electrostatic barrier of bulk g-C3N4 result in severe charge recombination and low charge separation efficiency. This perspective summarizes the recent progress in the development of g-C3N4 photocatalytic systems, and focuses on three main modification strategies for promoting charge transfer and minimizing charge recombination, including structural modulation, heterojunction construction, and cocatalyst loading. Based on these progress, we conclude current challenges of further improving photocatalytic efficiency to fulfill commercial requirements, and propose some recommendations for the design of novel and satisfactory g-C3N4 photocatalysts, which is expected to move forward the solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is considered as an attractive and appropriate material to split water and produce hydrogen (H-2) under visible light. Nevertheless, the H-2 evolution rate of g-C3N4 is low due to the rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs. In this context, we develop a novel g-C3N4 system combined with N-hydroxyphthalimide (denoted as NHPI) through pi-pi interactions and hydrogen bonds at the interface for circumventing this issue. NHPI conjugated small molecules act as an efficient hole mediator to reduce the recombination of electron-hole pairs and enhance the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. Under visible light excitation, the redox couple NHPI/NHPI+ serves as a redox shuttle, which can facilitate the transfer of holes from g-C3N4 to triethanolamine (TEOA), and the electrons can be shuttled to a Pt cocatalyst. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), photoelectrochemical (PEC) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements exhibit that the introduction of NHPI on g-C3N4 boosts the visible-light photocatalytic activity through accelerating spatial separation of the electron-hole pairs. Upon introducing optimal 2 wt% NHPI, the photocatalytic H-2 production rate of the g-C3N4/2 wt% NHPI (CN/2 wt% NHPI) composite is significantly enhanced up to 1145.4 mu mol h(-1) g(-1), exceeding that of pristine g-C3N4 (274.0 mu mol h(-1) g(-1)) by 4.2 times. Moreover, the reusability test shows that no obvious loss of activity is observed over the CN/2 wt% NHPI sample. Overall, an excellent stable and highly efficient photocatalyst of the CN/NHPI heterostructure has been obtained, which could find potential application in solar-to-fuel conversion.
Highly Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Evolution from Water Using Visible Light and Structure‐Controlled Graphitic Carbon Nitride

Abstract:AbstractThe major challenge of photocatalytic water splitting, the prototypical reaction for the direct production of hydrogen by using solar energy, is to develop low‐cost yet highly efficient and stable semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, an effective strategy for synthesizing extremely active graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) from a low‐cost precursor, urea, is reported. The g‐C3N4 exhibits an extraordinary hydrogen‐evolution rate (ca. 20 000 μmol h−1 g−1 under full arc), which leads to a high turnover number (TON) of over 641 after 6 h. The reaction proceeds for more than 30 h without activity loss and results in an internal quantum yield of 26.5 % under visible light, which is nearly an order of magnitude higher than that observed for any other existing g‐C3N4 photocatalysts. Furthermore, it was found by experimental analysis and DFT calculations that as the degree of polymerization increases and the proton concentration decreases, the hydrogen‐evolution rate is significantly enhanced.

Abstract:Accelerating the charge separation and transfer as well as increasing the visible light absorption is of great importance for photocatalysts to realize efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution via water splitting. Herein, for the first time, we fabricated in-plane graphited nanocarbon-conjugated polymeric carbon nitride (GNC-C3N4) nanosheet heterostructure photocatalyst from melamine and hexaketocyclohexane octahydrate mixture via an amino-carbonyl reaction. The incorporation of GNC into conjugate network of C3N4 can not only dramatically enhance the light harvesting but also significantly promote the charge separation and transfer by the built-in electric field and intimate interface in the coplanar GNC-C3N4 heterostructure. Accordingly, the optimal GNC-C3N4 photocatalyst demonstrates a more than 15-fold enhancement for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water under visible light irradiation, compared to C3N4.
G-C3n4 Hydrogen-Bonding Viologen for Significantly Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic H-2 Evolution

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has recently emerged as a promising metal-free photocatalytic material for the conversion of solar energy into chemical energy under visible-light irradiation. Unfortunately, the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 is still unsatisfactory due to the serious recombination of photo generated electron-hole pairs. Here, we develop a strategy to construct a type of g-C3N4-based composite photocatalyst (C3N4/ CBV2+), a g-C3N4 surface coupled with a viologen redox mediator (1,1'-bis(4-carboxylatobenzy1)-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride, denoted as CBV2+ through hydrogen bonds, for enhanced H, production from water under visible-light irradiation. The CBV2+ molecules not only provide sites for metal particle formation but also act as an efficient electron transfer mediator to transfer the photoinduced electrons from g-C3N4 to platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs). The vectorial charge transfer results in an efficient spatial separation of electrons and holes in the C3N4/CBV2+ composite photocatalyst and facilitates the photogenerated charge carriers for direct photocatalytic water splitting. When 1 wt % CBV2+ is introduced, the hydrogen production rate of C3N4/CBV2+ dramatically increases up to 41.57 mu mol h(-1), exceeding 85 times the rate over unmodified g-C3N4 (only 0.49 mu mol 11'). It is noted that a negligible loss of photocatalytic activity was observed over continuous irradiation up to 20 h, demonstrating its good stability. The combination of the two emerging functional materials represents a simple but economical and powerful approach for highly effective photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light irradiation. This study opens a window to rationally develop cost-acceptable materials for more efficient solar energy conversion applications.
CNT/g-C3N4 Photocatalysts with Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Ability for Water Splitting Based on a Noncovalent Interaction

Abstract:Graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a novel photocatalyst has attracted growing attention, but its photocatalytic efficiency should be further improved. Based on the large work function and fast electron conductivity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), here CNT/g-C3N4 photocatalysts with improved H-2 evolution ability and stable water splitting ability were synthesized. The improvement was attributed to the synergistic effect between CNTs and g-C3N4. As for the mechanisms, CNTs strongly attracted photoelectrons and, because of excellent conductibility, rapidly transferred photoelectrons from the catalyst interface. Thereby, the photoelectron migration rate and the photogenerated charge separation and the use efficiency of photoelectrons in g-C3N4 were improved, which largely enhanced the hydrogen production ability. Moreover, the addition of CNTs improved the service life and stability of g-C3N4-based photocatalytic H-2 production. After 10hours of visible light irradiation, the maximum H-2 yield from the 12-mg/L CNT/g-C3N4 (CG12) was 138.7 times larger than that of g-C3N4 (6548.4 vs 47.2mol/g), and the H-2 evolution rate was 138.7 times that of g-C3N4 (654.8 vs 4.72mol/g/h). After 50hours, the apparent quantum efficiency of CG12 was up to 37.9%, indicating that the addition of CNTs improved the photocatalytic splitting and stability of g-C3N4. The mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen production and the roles of CNTs in improving water splitting were discussed through characterization and activity experiments. It was found that the addition of CNTs accelerated the migration, separation, and utilization of photoelectrons and thereby significantly enhanced the photocatalytic performance.
Hydrogen Bonds in Heterojunction Photocatalysts for Efficient Charge Transfer

Abstract:A hydrogen bond-based heterojunction photocatalyst, g-C3N4/melamine-cyanurate (gMC), was synthesized by a facile alkaline hydrothermal approach. The hydrogen bonds between the two substrates (N-HO=C) provide not only an ultrafast pathway (hundreds of femtoseconds) but also an inner electric field for hole transfer from C3N4 to melamine-cyanurate. Although only the g-C3N4 moiety acts as a photocatalyst, the optimized composite presents approximately 5.4, 3 and 2.5 times higher photocatalytic activity than bulk g-C3N4 in the decomposition of acetaldehyde and 2-propanol and the generation of H-2 by water splitting, respectively. In this paper, we demonstrate that hydrogen bonds can not only lower the interfacial barrier and separate redox sides but also control the direction of charge transfer, which enables the design of the photocatalytic mechanism.

Under irradiation of visible light (λ>420 nm), the hybrid shows a high durability and superior hydrogen production rate of 2066.2 μmol g-1 h-1 from water splitting, which is approximately three times greater than that of bulk g-C3 N4 because of the effective separation of photo-excited charge carriers by two narrow band gap semiconductors, tightly coupled with the Z-Scheme structural feature.

Abstract:The availability of low-cost noble-metal-free photocatalyst is vital for sustainable and large-scale hydrogen production. Herein, N-doped-carbon coated Co3W3C nanocrystallines (NC-Co3W3C), a novel cocatalyst, are anchored onto g-C3N4, forming a (NC-Co3W3C@g-C3N4) composite photocatalyst for application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Under visible light irradiation, NC-Co3W3C@g-C3N4 photocatalyst shows a remarkable photocatalytic HER rate of 1332 μmol h−1 g−1, achieving 148 times higher than pristine g-C3N4 photocatalyst and 89.22% as high as Pt/g-C3N4 photocatalyst (the expensive noble-metal-based catalyst). The mechanism investigation via systematic experimental and theoretical analysis (Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation) suggests that the high photocatalytic efficiency could be attributed to boosted light absorption and accelerated HER kinetic that is resulted from the enhanced conducitity, reinforced stability, and the suitable H adsorption free energy introduced by the cocatalyst. This work suggests the construction of highly efficient catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is chemically and economically viable for the green hydrogen economy.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production via water splitting in the absence of sacrificial agents is a promising strategy for producing clean and sustainable hydrogen energy from solar energy. However, the realization of a photocatalytic pure water splitting system with desirable efficiency is still a huge challenge. Herein, visible light photocatalytic H2 production from pure water splitting was successfully achieved using a g-C3N4/CoTiO3 S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst in the absence of sacrificial agents. An optimum hydrogen evolution rate of 118 μmol·h−1·g−1 was reached with the addition of 1.5 wt% CoTiO3. The remarkably promoted hydrogen evolution rate was attributed to the intensified light absorption coupled with the synergistic effect of visible light responsive CoTiO3, the promoted efficiency in charge separation, and the reserved strong redox capacity induced by the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This work provides an alternative to visible light-responding oxidation photocatalysts for the construction of S-scheme heterojunctions and high-efficiency photocatalytic systems for pure water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water splitting presents an attractive prospect in dealing with the energy crisis, but the low efficiency of charge separation and migration still seriously hinders its further practical application. Here, an acidified boron-doped g-C3N4 (HBCNN) and cobalt porphyrin metal organic frameworks (CoPMOF) self-assembled two-dimensional and two-dimensional (2D/2D) hybrid photocatalyst is fabricated successfully. The resultant HBCNN/CoPMOF with optimum ratio exhibits a superior H2 evolution rate of 33.17 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 3.04 and 100.50 times higher than the single HBCNN and CoPMOF, respectively. It is found that a coordination connection has formed between CoPMOF and HBCNN through Co-N bond, and the interfacial Co-N bond then forms a pseudo-gap in the up-spin channel of electronic states, establishing an electron-hole separation mechanism. It is this electron-hole separation mechanism that contributes to a Z-scheme transport mode of photogenerated carriers, which greatly promotes the photocatalytic H2 production performance of HBCNN/CoPMOF heterostructure. This work may provide an idea for the design of heterojunction to improve the photocatalytic performance by constructing electron-hole separation through interfacial bond.

Abstract:The main existing issues in graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) based photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) production include poor separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers and low optical absorption. Thus, the construction of a multicomponent co-catalyst and its integration with g-C 3 N 4 to facilitate the transport and separation of photoexcited charge carriers are regarded as a promising approach for augmenting the photocatalytic H 2 production activity. In this study, we report CoZnS@NSC- X /g-C 3 N 4 (where X indicates sulfidation times of 15, 30, 45, and 60 min) nanocomposites constructed from a CoZn-MOF derived CoS 2 , Co 3 S 4 and ZnS intercalated nitrogen/sulfur-doped carbon (CoZnS@NSC) nanoparticle co-catalyst and g-C 3 N 4 for H 2 production from water splitting. The maximum photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate (610.8 μmol h −1 g −1 ) of the CoZnS@NSC-15/g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure, with an optimized CoZnS@NSC loading of 10 wt% and 15 min sulfidation, is nearly 3.7 and 290.9 times higher than those of unsulfidated CoZn@NC/g-C 3 N 4 and bare g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. This significantly boosted photocatalytic performance is attributed to the efficient separation and transfer of electron–hole (e − /h + ) pairs and electronic conductivity caused by the appropriate sulfidation time and loading amount of CoZnS@NSC nanoparticles. This work offers a facile approach to designing metal–organic framework derived co-catalyst modified semiconductor-based photocatalysts for high-performance in practical applications.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a promising photocatalyst for solar H-2 generation, but the practical application of g-C3N4 is still limited by the low separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, we report the construction of ternary g-C3N4/graphene/MoS2 two-dimensional nanojunction photocatalysts for enhanced visible light photocatalytic H-2 production from water. As demonstrated by photoluminescence and transient photocurrent studies, the intimate two-dimensional nanojuction can efficiently accelerate the charge transfer, resulting in the high photocatalytic activity. The g-C3N4/graphene/MoS2 composite with 0.5% graphene and 1.2% MoS2 achieves a high H-2 evolution rate of 317 mu mol h(-1) g(-1), and the apparent quantum yield reaches 3.4% at 420 nm. More importantly, the ternary g-C3N4/graphene/MoS2 two-dimensional nanojunction photocatalyst exhibits much higher photocatalytic activity than the optimized Pt-loaded g-C3N4 photocatalyst.
Preparation and Application of a Novel S-Scheme Nanoheterojunction Photocatalyst (LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3/g-C3N4)

Abstract:Rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes affects the performance of a semiconductor device and limits the efficiency of photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production. The use of an S-scheme nanoscale heterojunction catalyst for the separation of photogenerated charge carriers is a feasible approach to achieve high-efficiency photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Therefore, we synthesized a three-dimensional S-scheme nanoscale heterojunction catalyst (LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3/g-C3N4) and investigated its activity in photocatalytic water splitting. An analysis of the band structure (XPS, UPS, and Mott-Schottky) indicated effective interfacial charge transfer in an S-scheme nanoscale heterojunction composed of two n-type semiconductors. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirmed that the light-induced charge transfer followed the S-scheme mechanism. Based on the capture test (EPR) of •OH free radicals, it can be seen that the enhanced activity is attributed to the S-scheme carrier migration mechanism in heterojunction, which promotes the rapid adsorption of H+ by the abundant amino sites in g-C3N4, thus effectively generating H2. The 2D/2D LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3/g-C3N4 heterojunction has a good interface and produces a built-in electric field, improving the separation of e- and h+ while increasing the oxygen vacancy. The synergistic effect of the heterostructure and oxygen vacancy makes the photocatalyst significantly better than LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3 and g-C3N4 in visible light. The hydrogen evolution rate of the composite catalyst (LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3/g-C3N4-70 wt %) was 34.50 mmol·h-1·g-1, which was 40.6 times and 9.2 times higher than that of the catalysts (LaNiO3 and g-C3N4), respectively. After 25 h of cyclic testing, the catalyst (LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3/g-C3N4-70 wt %) composite material still exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution performance and photostability. It was confirmed that the synergistic effect between abundant active sites, enriched oxygen vacancies, and 2D/2D heterojunctions improved the photoinduced carrier separation and the light absorption efficiency of visible light. This study opens up new possibilities for the logical design of efficient photodecomposition using 2D/2D heterojunctions combined with oxygen vacancies.
Promotion of intramolecular electron transfer in g-C3N4 tubes by introducing pyridine structure to accelerate photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:The design of highly efficient photocatalysts for water splitting is critical to the production of hydrogen energy. Reducing carrier recombination and increasing intramolecular charge transfer are considered to be the keys to improving the performance of photocatalysts. In this work, a tubular polymer network containing a carbon-rich π-electron conjugated system (defined as VPPX-CN) was constructed by supramolecular self-assembly using pyridine-containing nicotinamide and melamine as precursors. Through various characterization methods and mechanism analysis, the performance and structure of the synthesized samples were thoroughly investigated. It is found that the intramolecular charge is effectively separated, and the special tubular structure has a large specific surface area, which reduces the rebinding of carriers. The average hydrogen production rate of the optimal sample VPP0.3-CN was 2316.2 μmol g−1 h−1, which was 4 times higher that of PCN. After 5 times of recycling within 25 h, the photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst remained stable. This study provides a solution to the problems of high carrier recombination rate and low charge transfer rate in photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The photocatalytic evolution of hydrogen (H-2) from water splitting is considered a promising route to overcome the energy crisis, and the key lies in the preparation of efficient photocatalysts. Herein, superior ordered sponge-like carbon self-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets (SCCNS) were prepared via a combined strategy of melamine-cyanuric acid complex supramolecular pre-assembly and solvothermal pre-treatment using ethylene glycol (EG) aqueous solutions (EG:water = 50:50 vol.%) as a solvent and carbon doping source. The following pyrolysis converts the naturally arranged melamine-EG-cyanuric acid supramolecular intermediates to highly crystalline SCCNS with large specific surface areas. The optimal SCCNS-180 exhibits superior photocatalytic H-2 evolution activities (similar to 4393 and 11 320 mu mol h(-1) g(-1)) when irradiated with visible light and simulated sunlight; these values are up to similar to 17- and similar to 18-fold higher than that of bulk g-C3N4. The quantum efficiency of SCCNS-180 at lambda = 420 nm can reach 6.0%. The excellent photocatalytic performance of SCCNS-180 derives from its distinct ordered sponge-like nanosheet structure with highly crystallinity and the carbon doping, leading to its improved optical absorption, accelerated photoinduced electron-hole pair transfer and separation rate and enlarged specific surface area (134.4 m(2) g(-1)).
Carbon doping and bridging oxygen benefit for g-C3N4 to photocatalytic H2 production from methanol/water splitting: Experiments and theoretical calculations

Abstract:Water-based homogeneous pre-assembly and thermal polycondensation were used to prepare carbon-doped oxygen-bridged layer-twisted graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) heterojunction for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). Despite the narrow band gap of around 0.91 eV, g-C3N4 heterojunction exhibited an excellent hydrogen evolution rate (563.87 μmolg−1h−1) in 30 % methanol/water solution without precious metal assisting catalysts, 36.85 times higher than g-C3N4. C doping in heptazine ring and bridging O caused the adjacent layer of g-C3N4 to twist by 11° in three-dimensional space. Noticeably, carbon doping in triazine ring was favorable to the establishment of build-in electric field between adjacent layers owing to the delocalized large π bonds. Bridging oxygen acted as a conversion switch for electron storage and transport of photogenerated charge from innerlayer (unmodified layer) with high Fermi level to outlayer (modified layer) with low Fermi level. This work provided an insightful guidance to novel layer-twisted g–C3N4–based photocatalysts for efficient H2 production.

Abstract:The use of photocatalysis to address environmental pollution and energy shortage is an attractive choice. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel 3D interconnected porous carbon-rich g-C3N4 catalyst via facile thermal polymerization to enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production and photodegradation of dye contaminants. Enhanced hydrogen evolution (1956.23 μmol g−1 h−1) and photocatalytic RhB degradation (96.74%) efficiency were achieved with the as-obtained catalysts. Based on the photocatalytic experimental data and characterization analyses, an enhancement mechanism was proposed. The 3D interconnected porous structure endowed the g-C3N4 with numerous active sites and a large specific surface area, and the carbon modification facilitated the separation and transfer of the photoinduced charge carriers. Nanoshape engineering and the carbon-rich structure showed a synergetic effect in increasing photocatalytic performance. This study offers an applicable methodology for the exploitation of an economical catalyst to alleviate environmental pollution and energy shortages.
