Abstract:Zn metal has received immense interest as a promising anode of rechargeable aqueous batteries for grid-scale energy storage. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and surface parasitic reactions greatly retard its practical implementation. Herein, we demonstrate a seamless and multifunctional metal-organic framework (MOF) interphase for building corrosion-free and dendrite-free Zn anodes. The on-site coordinated MOF interphase with 3D open framework structure could function as a highly zincophilic mediator and ion sifter that synergistically induces fast and uniform Zn nucleation/deposition. In addition, the surface corrosion and hydrogen evolution are significantly suppressed by the interface shielding of the seamless interphase. An ultrastable Zn plating/stripping is achieved with elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% over 1000 cycles and prolonged lifetime of 1100 h at 10 mA cm-2 with a high cumulative plated capacity of 5.5 Ah cm-2. Moreover, the modified Zn anode assures the MnO2-based full cells with superior rate and cycling performance.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine batteries are emerging high-safety and cost-effective technology for large-scale energy storage. However, the high solubility of discharge species polyiodide in aqueous electrolyte is the major challenge for iodine cathode. Herein, the polyiodide doped conductive polymer cathode is proposed to suppress the dissolution of active materials in electrolyte. High reversible capacity of 160 mAh/g and remarkable cycling stability with capacity retention of 79% after 700 cycles at 1.5 A/g are achieved.

Abstract:Most reported cathode materials for rechargeable aqueous Al metal batteries are based on an intercalative-type chemistry mechanism. Herein, iodine embedded in MOF-derived N-doped microporous carbon polyhedrons (I2@ZIF-8-C) is proposed to be a conversion-type cathode material for aqueous aluminum-ion batteries based on "water-in-salt" electrolytes. Compared with the conventional Al–I2 battery using ionic liquid electrolyte, the proposed aqueous Al–I2 battery delivers much enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of specific capacity and voltage plateaus. Benefitting from the confined liquid–solid conversion of iodine in hierarchical N-doped microporous carbon polyhedrons and enhanced reaction kinetics of aqueous electrolytes, the I2@ZIF-8-C electrode delivers high reversibility, superior specific capacity (≈219.8 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1), and high rate performance (≈102.6 mAh g−1 at 8 A g−1). The reversible reaction between I2 and I−, with I3− and I5− as intermediates, is confirmed via ex situ Raman spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, solid-state hydrogel electrolyte is employed to fabricate a flexible Al–I2 battery, which shows performance comparable to batteries using liquid electrolyte and can be integrated to power wearable devices as a reliable energy supply.

Abstract:The multi-electron transfer I-/IO3- redox couple is attractive for high energy aqueous batteries. Shifting from an acidic to an alkaline electrolyte significantly enhances the IO3- formation kinetics due to the spontaneous disproportionation reaction, while the alkaline environment also offers more favorable Zn anode compatibility. However, sluggish kinetics during the reduction of IO3- persists in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes, compromising the energy efficiency of this glorious redox couple. Here, we establish the fundamental redox mechanism of the I-/IO3- couple in alkaline electrolytes for the first time and propose that Bi/Bi2O3 acts as a redox mediator (RM) to "catalyze" the reduction of IO3-. This mediation significantly reduces the voltage gap between charge/discharge from 1.6 V to 1 V with improved conversion efficiency and rate capability. By pairing the Zn anode and the Bi/Bi2O3 RM cathode, the full battery with I-/IO3- redox mechanism achieves high areal capacity of 12 mAh cm-2 and stable operation at 5 mAh cm-2 for over 400 cycles.

Abstract:Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) have been highlighted as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage due to the abundant reserve, low cost, high specific capacity, and good safety of aluminum. However, the development of AIBs is hindered by the usage of expensive, corrosive, and humidity-sensitive AlCl3-based ionic liquid electrolytes. Herein, we develop a low-cost, non-corrosive, and air-stable ternary hydrate eutectic electrolyte (HEE) composed of aluminum nitrate hydrate, manganese nitrate hydrate, and N,N-dimethylacetamide for cathode-free AIBs. The solvation structure of metal cations and water state in the electrolyte are regulated through the coordination of both water and N,N-dimethylacetamide molecules. The unique structural features of the HEE enables reversible deposition/stripping of AlxMnO2 on the cathodic current collector that are confirmed by various in-situ and ex-situ characterizations, ultimately realizing cathode-free AIBs. The architected cathodefree AIB delivers a discharge specific capacity of 361 mAh g- 1 and shows good cycling stability and high air stability. This study provides a valuable insight into the design of rechargeable multi-valent metal ion batteries for advanced large-scale energy storage systems.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-iodine batteries have received extensive attention due to their inherent advantages such as low cost, flame retardancy and safety. To address the safety concern associated with Zn dendrites, tin functional layer is introduced to the Zn surface via a spontaneous galvanic replacement reaction. This provides rapid deposition kinetics, thereby achieving the uniform Zn plating/stripping with a low overpotential (13.9 mV) and good stability for over 900 h. Importantly, the coupling of the advanced Zn anode with iodine in Zn-I2 battery exhibits a high specific capacity of 196.4 mAh·g−1 with high capacity retention (90.7%). This work provides a reliable strategy to regulate the reversible redox of zinc for advanced rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Due to the natural abundance of iodine, cost‐effective, and sustainability, metal‐iodine batteries are competitive for the next‐generation energy storage systems with high energy density, and large power density. However, the inherent properties of iodine such as electronic insulation and shuttle behavior of soluble iodine species affect negatively rate performance, cyclability, and self‐discharge behavior of metal‐iodine batteries, while the dendrite growth and metal corrosion on the anode side brings potential safety hazards and inferior durability. These problems of metal‐iodine system still exist and need to be solved urgently. Herein, we summarize the research progress of metal‐iodine batteries in the past decades. Firstly, the classification, design strategy and reaction mechanism of iodine electrode are briefly outlined. Secondly, the current development and protection strategy of conventional metal anodes in metal‐iodine batteries are highlighted, and some potential anode materials and their design strategies are proposed. Thirdly, the key electrochemical parameters of state‐of‐art metal‐iodine batteries are compared and analyzed to solve critical issues for realizing next‐generation iodine‐based energy storage systems. Therefore, the aim of this review is to promote the development of metal‐iodine batteries and provide guidelines for their design.

Abstract:Zinc-based batteries are gaining prominence as promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in the pursuit of Net-Zero goals, owing to their cost-effectiveness, scalability, and reduced resource dependency. Aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine (Zn-I 2 ) batteries, in particular, are emerging as an enticing choice for future energy storage systems, thanks to their eco-friendly nature, impressive theoretical capacity, and impressive energy/power density. Nevertheless, several challenges, including the well-known polyiodide shuttling phenomenon, suboptimal thermodynamic stability, and issues like corrosion and dendrite formation on Zn metal anodes, impede their practical implementation. Tremendous progress has been achieved to circumvent these issues in recent years, though a comprehensive review article for both entry-level and experienced researchers is still lacking up to date. This review aims at discussing the fundamentals, challenges, and solutions to enable the understanding of electrochemistry mechanisms, and systematically summarizing the past, present, and future technologies and strategies involving iodine cathode design and modification, interlayer construction/separator modification, electrolytes optimization, and Zn metal anodes protection. Additionally, based on recent achievements, some promising directions and efforts for developing high-performance Zn−I 2 batteries are proposed to accelerate commercial applications.

Abstract:The N element appears to gradient distribution in cathode, by strategy of the NH3 heat treatment. The refilling of N can reduce the formation energy of oxygen vacancies resulting to more stable oxygen vacancies. Simultaneously, the distinctive configuration of gradient N‐filling leads to minimal fluctuations in internal oxygen vacancy concentration, ensuring stable electrochemical performance. Aluminum ion batteries (AIBs) are widely regarded as the most potential large‐scale metal ion battery because of its high safety and environment‐friendly characteristics. To solve the problem of weak electrical conductivity of organic materials, different structures of cyano organic molecules with electrophilic properties are selected as the cathode materials of aluminum batteries. Through experimental characterization and density functional theory theoretical calculation, Phthalonitrile is the best cathode material among the five organic molecules and proved that the C≡N group is the active site for insertion/extraction of AlCl2+ ions. The first cycle‐specific capacity of the assembled flexible package battery is as high as 191.92 mAh g−1, the discharge‐specific capacity is 112.67 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles, and the coulombic efficiency is ≈97%. At the same time, the influences of different molecular structures and functional groups on the battery are also proved. These research results lay a foundation for selecting safe and stable organic aluminum batteries and provide a new reference for developing high‐performance AIBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable aluminum ion batteries (RABs) have attracted much attention because of their high charge density, low cost, and low flammability. However, the traditional cathodes used in RABs had limited intercalation ability of Al3+ ion, leading to a low capacity. We report for the first time a rechargeable aluminum/iodine (Al/I-2) battery. The unique conversion reaction mechanism of the Al/I-2 battery chemistry avoids the cathode material disintegration during repeated charge-discharge processes, and this system successfully suppresses the shuttle of dissolved polyiodide in ionic liquid because of the hydrogen-bonding interaction, resulting in a robust rechargeable RAB system. The rechargeable Al/I2 battery based on the I-3(-)/I-redox chemistry is demonstrated to be highly reversible in Al3+ ion storage, providing a high capacity of >200 mAh g(-1) at 0.2C and high stability for even over 150 cycles at 1C. This work provides a new insight into designing a RAB system based on redox chemistry.

Abstract:The high performance of aqueous zinc–iodine batteries is limited by the soluble polyiodide shuttling and sluggish redox kinetics. Various strategies have been proposed to address these issues, but most of these optimizing strategies either add additional hurdles to the manufacturing process or require materials that are not currently commercially available. Herein, we take advantage of commercial 1,2-dimethyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide to serve as a redox reaction catalyst for the activation of iodine cathodes without any other material modification. Due to the strong bonding coordination between 1,2-dimethyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide and the polyiodides, the as-prepared cell has a high specific capacity (147 mA h g −1 ) at 50C, and ultralong cycling performance (20 000 cycles) with better capacity retention. This work introduces an effective and commercial material that enables bringing aqueous rechargeable zinc iodine batteries to the practical energy market.

Abstract:Highlights The I 3 − additive promoted in situ formation of zincophilic Cu nanoclusters on commercial Cu foil, which achieves uniform Zn deposition with ultralow nucleation overpotential and high reversibility. The Zn-rich ZnI 2 cathode confined by graphene/polyvinyl pyrrolidone heterostructure shows enhanced conductivity and shuttle effect suppression, providing sufficient Zn 2+ for the anode stably. The assembled anode-free Zn-iodine battery exhibits attractive features for commercialization: low cost, fast production, significantly increased energy density and durable cycle stability under practical application conditions.

Abstract:The rechargeable zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) battery is a promising energy-storage system due to its low cost and good security, but the practical use of the battery is largely constrained by the shuttle effect and high dissolvability of iodides. Here a multifunctional iodine host, constructed with nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanocages (NCCs) by the polymerization carbonization activation method, is exploited to improve the electrochemical performance and lifespan of the Zn-I2 battery, achieving a high specific capacity of 259 mAh g-1, a good rate performance (maintaining 50.6% expanding 50 times), and a high cycle stability (retention of 100% after 1000 cycles). On the basis of the experimental results and theoretical calculations, NCCs via the introduction of N doping and nanosized porous structure can simultaneously provide rich and robust anchoring and catalytic sites to carry out the electrostatic adsorption of iodides and facilitate the reversible conversion between iodine and iodides. This work shows a novel and efficient strategy to develop high-performance and long-life Zn-I2 batteries.

Abstract:Compared with lithium-ion battery, aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine is of interest due to their high safety and low cost. Unfortunately, the host material's low conductivity, small specific surface area, shuttling effect, and high soluble iodine species (I 2 , I - , and I 3 - ) are inhibiting its wide development. In this work, a dual strategy of fixing iodine active material with nanotubular microporous carbon (MCN) and modified cotton fiber separator (MCN@CF) is employed to solve the above-mentioned problem. The Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) assembled with an MCN/I 2 cathode and MCN@CF separator show up to 162 mA h g -1 of reversible initial capacity with 85 % capacity retention at 100 mA g -1 after 100 cycles. Moreover, besides featuring excellent long-term cyclability, MCN@CF battery delivers a Coulombic efficiency of 99 % over 2000 cycles with a current density of 1 A g -1 . This study would lead to opening of a new paradigm for the development of highly reversible aqueous rechargeable ZIBs.

Due to the poor reversibility and conductivity of traditional electrode materials, the development of aluminum-ion batteries has been greatly hindered. In this paper, a new stable WS2/WO3 cathode for aluminum-ion batteries was prepared by the coprecipitation method. The introduction of the WS2/WO3 heterojunction greatly enhances the electron transfer rate between the material interfaces, and the large specific surface area of the material also provides more active sites for the electrochemical reaction. The WS2/WO3 cathode retained a high specific capacity of 200 mAh/g with a capacity retention of 80% at 1000 mA/g after 100 cycles.
