Abstract:The response of colloidal particles to a light-controlled external temperature field can be harnessed for opto-thermophoretic manipulation of the particles. The thermoelectric effect is regarded as the driving force for thermophoretic trapping of particles at the light-irradiated hot region, which is thus limited to ionic liquids. Herein, we achieve opto-thermophoretic manipulation of colloidal particles in various non-ionic liquids, including water, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and 1-butanol, and establish the physical mechanism of the manipulation at the molecular level. We reveal that the non-ionic driving force originates from a layered structure of solvent molecules at the particle-solvent interface, which is supported by molecular dynamics simulations. Furthermore, the effects of hydrophilicity, solvent type, and ionic strength on the layered interfacial structures and thus the trapping stability of particles are investigated, providing molecular-level insight into thermophoresis and guidance on interfacial engineering for optothermal manipulation.

Abstract:Directed migration of particles and molecules in a temperature gradient field, which is known as thermophoresis or the Soret effect, is of fundamental importance for mass transfer in colloid science and life sciences. However, thermophoretic tweezers that enable versatile particle manipulation have remained elusive due to the complex underlying physical forces in thermophoresis and the lack of general thermophilic particles above room temperature. Herein, we exploit entropic response and permittivity gradient at the particle-solvent interface to optically generated thermal gradient to achieve the thermophoretic trapping and dynamic manipulation of charged particles over an optothermal-responsive substrate. Engineering the interfacial properties, i.e., the surface charge of particles and the ionic strength of the solvent, further enhances the trapping efficiency. Through the rational design of optothermal potential profiles and substrate geometries, we have achieved various tweezing functionalities, including particle assembly, alignment, rotation and guiding, as well as precise transport of single nanoparticles. Based on the general concept of entropic change of polarized molecules structured at the particle-solvent interlayer, the thermophoretic tweezers are applicable to various types of particles, biological cells, and molecules and a wide range of solvents.
Opto-Thermophoretic Attraction, Trapping, and Dynamic Manipulation of Lipid Vesicles.

Abstract:Lipid vesicles are important biological assemblies, which are critical to biological transport processes, and vesicles prepared in the lab are a workhorse for studies of drug delivery, protein unfolding, biomolecular interactions, compartmentalized chemistry, and stimuli-responsive sensing. The current method of using optical tweezers for holding lipid vesicles in place for single-vesicle studies suffers from limitations such as high optical power, rigorous optics, and small difference in the refractive indices of vesicles and water. Herein, we report the use of plasmonic heating to trap vesicles in a temperature gradient, allowing long-range attraction, parallel trapping, and dynamic manipulation. The capabilities and limitations with respect to thermal effects on vesicle structure and optical spectroscopy are discussed. This simple approach allows vesicle manipulation using down to 3 orders of magnitude lower optical power and at least an order of magnitude higher trapping stiffness per unit power than traditional optical tweezers while using a simple optical setup. In addition to the benefit provided by the relaxation of these technical constraints, this technique can complement optical tweezers to allow detailed studies on thermophoresis of optically trapped vesicles and effects of locally generated thermal gradients on the physical properties of lipid vesicles. Finally, the technique itself and the large-scale collection of vesicles have huge potential for future studies of vesicles relevant to detection of exosomes, lipid-raft formation, and other areas relevant to the life sciences.

Abstract:Single particle analysis is essential for a better understanding of the particle transformation process and to predict its environmental impact. In this study, we developed an aerosol optical tweezer (AOT) Raman spectroscopy system to investigate the phase state and morphology of suspended aerosol droplets in real time. The system comprises four modules: optical trapping, reaction, illumination and imaging, and detection. The optical trapping module utilizes a 532 nm laser and a 100 × oil immersion objective to stably trap aerosol droplets within 30 s. The reaction module allows us to adjust relative humidity (RH) and introduce reaction gases into the droplet levitation chamber, facilitating experiments to study liquid–liquid phase transitions. The illumination and imaging module employs a high-speed camera to monitor the trapped droplets, while the detector module records Raman scattering light. We trapped sodium chloride (NaCl) and 3-methyl glutaric acid (3-MGA) mixed droplets to examine RH-dependent morphology changes. Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) occurred when RH was decreased. Additionally, we introduced ozone and limonene/pinene to generate secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles in situ, which collided with the trapped droplet and dissolved in it. To determine the trapped droplet's characteristics, we utilized an open-source program based on Mie theory to retrieve diameter and refractive index from the observed whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in Raman spectra. It is found that mixed droplets formed core–shell morphology when RH was decreased, and the RH dependence of the droplets' phase transitions generated by different SOA precursors varied. Our AOT system serves as an essential experimental platform for in situ assessment of morphology and phase state during dynamic atmospheric processes.
Trapping polar molecules by surface acoustic waves

Abstract:We propose a method to trap polar molecules with the electrical force induced by the surface acoustic wave (SAW) on piezoelectric materials. In this approach, the electrical force is perpendicular to the moving direction of the polar molecules, and is used to control the positions of trapped polar molecules in the direction orthogonal to the acoustic transmission. By virtue of an external electrical force, the SAW-induced electrical field can trap the polar molecules into single-layer or multi-layer lattices. The arrangement of molecules can affect the binding energy and localization of the molecule array. Then the one- or two-dimensional trapped polar molecule arrays can be used to construct the Bose-Hubbard (BH) model, whose energy and dynamics are affected by the localizations of the trapped molecules. We find that the phase transitions between the superfluid and Mott insulator based on trapped polar molecule BH model can be modulated by the SAW induced electrical potential.

Microwave-Mediated Magneto-Optical Trap for Polar Molecules

Abstract:Realizing a molecular magneto-optical trap has been a dream for cold molecular physicists for a long time. However, due to the complex energy levels and the small effective Lande g-factor of the excited states, the traditional magneto-optical trap (MOT) scheme does not work very well for polar molecules. One way to overcome this problem is the switching MOT, which requires very fast switching of both the magnetic field and the laser polarizations. Switching laser polarizations is relatively easy, but fast switching of the magnetic field is experimentally challenging. Here we propose an alternative approach, the microwave-mediated MOT, which requires a slight change of the current experimental setup to solve the problem. We calculate the MOT force and compare it with the traditional MOT and the switching MOT scheme. The results show that we can operate a good MOT with this simple setup.

Abstract:Optical traps are devices used to micromanipulation microscopic objects using a focused laser beam in an optical microscope field of view. Trapping such objects is possible only when their refractive index is higher than the environment's. Typically, trapping experiments are carried out in aqueous solutions, exploiting the low refractive index of water. Experiments in different pure organic solvents were also reported, showing not very good dependence of the optical-trap force constant on the solvent refractive index. In this study, we carry out optical trapping experiments in mixed water:organic solvents where the organic components are dimethyl sulfoxide, ethylene glycol, and glycerol. Trends of corner frequencies measured in these mixtures follow the theoretical calculations well for all the studied systems in the whole molar-fraction range, indicating their dominant dependence on the refractive index. The conversion of the corner frequencies to the force constants of the trap is strongly influenced by the differences in viscosity throughout the molar-fraction range that emphasizes experimental errors in the regions where it is high. In addition, the force-constant and corner-frequency curves can serve as an indicator of ideality of the potential profile of the optical trap.

Abstract:Opto-thermophoretic manipulation is an emerging field, which exploits the thermophoretic migration of particles and colloidal species under a light-controlled temperature gradient field. The entropically favorable photon–phonon conversion and widely applicable heat-directed migration make it promising for low-power manipulation of variable particles in different fluidic environments. By exploiting an optothermal substrate, versatile opto-thermophoretic manipulation of colloidal particles and biological objects can be achieved via optical heating. In this paper, we summarize the working principles, concepts, and applications of the recently developed opto-thermophoretic techniques. Opto-thermophoretic trapping, tweezing, assembly, and printing of colloidal particles and biological objects are discussed thoroughly. With their low-power operation, simple optics, and diverse functionalities, opto-thermophoretic manipulation techniques will offer great opportunities in materials science, nanomanufacturing, life sciences, colloidal science, and nanomedicine.

Abstract:Arrays of optically levitated nanoparticles with fully tunable light-induced dipole-dipole - dipole interactions have emerged as a platform for fundamental research and sensing applications. However, previous experiments utilized two optical traps with identical polarization, leading to an interference effect. Here, we demonstrate light-induced dipole-dipole - dipole interactions using two orthogonally polarized optical traps. Furthermore, we achieve control over the strength and polarity of the optical coupling by adjusting the polarization and propose a method to simultaneously and stably measure conservative and non-conservative coupling rates. Electrokinetics of Polar Liquids in Contact with Non-Polar Surfaces

Abstract:Zeta potentials of several polar protic (water, ethylene glycol, formamide) as well as polar aprotic (dimethyl sulfoxide) liquids were measured in contact with three non-polar surfaces using closed-cell electro-osmosis. The test surfaces were chemisorbed monolayers of alkyl siloxanes, fluoroalkyl siloxanes and polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) grafted on glass slides. All these liquids exhibited substantial electrokinetics in contact with the non-polar surfaces with these observations: the electrokinetic effect on the fluorocarbon-coated surface is the strongest; and on a PDMS grafted surface, the effect is the weakest. Even though these hygroscopic liquids contain small amounts of water, the current models of charging based on the adsorption of hydroxide ions at the interface or the dissociation of preexisting functionalities (e.g., silanol groups) appear to be insufficient to account for the various facets of the experimental observations. The results illustrate how ubiquitous the phenomenon of electro-kinetics is with polar liquids contacting such apparently passive non-polar surfaces. We hope that these results will inspire further experimental and theoretical studies in this important area of research that has potential practical implications.

The manipulating ability of OTs is traditionally characterized by stability factor (S), which can only indicate an empirical " hit-or-miss " process. Additionally, the current quantitative models for trapping stability rarely consider the influence of external flow. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis to quantify the optical trapping stability in a perturbed asymmetric potential well is presented from the perspective of statistics, especially for weak trapping scenarios. Our analytical formulation takes experimentally measurable parameters including particle size, optical power, and spot width as inputs and precisely outputs a statistically relevant mean trapping time. Importantly, this formulation takes into account general and realistic cases including fluidic flow velocity and other perturbations. To verify the model, a back-focal-plane-interferometer-monitored trapping experiment in a flow is set up and the statistical characteristics of trapping time demonstrate good agreement with theoretical predictions. In total, the model quantitatively reveals the effects of external disturbance on trapping time, which will find applications where optical trapping stability is challenged by external perturbations in weak trapping conditions. Abstract:Optical trapping is having ever-increasing impact in science $-$ particularly biophysics, photonics and most recently in quantum optomechanics $-$ owing to its superior capability for manipulating nanoscale structures and materials. However, essentially all experimental optical trapping studies in the optical dipole regime have, to date, been dominated by the interaction between a material's electric polarizability, $\alpha_{e}$, and the electric part of the incident electromagnetic field, and therefore described by electric field intensity gradient forces. Optical trapping based on optical magnetic light-matter interactions has not been experimentally addressed despite it's immediate extension of the boundaries of optical trapping research and applications. This paper addresses this long-standing deficiency through the realization of optical magnetic trapping of large index of refraction (i.e., Si) nanoparticles and also presents a formalism for quantitative understanding of the experimental findings. Our experimental optical trapping results require including optical magnetic polarizability, $\alpha_{m}$, and electric-magnetic scattering forces associated with the Photonic Hall effect that are qualitatively and quantitatively validated by Maxwell stress tensor calculations. Our findings bring new opportunities for nanoparticle manipulation, potentially relax the limitations Ashkin claimed based on the optical Earnshaw's theorem, motivate optical matter formation by optical magnetic interactions, and suggest new N-body effects and symmetry breaking to drive dynamics of optical matter systems.

Abstract:Pickering emulsions have attracted increasing attention from multiple fields, including food, cosmetics, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and agriculture. Their stability relies on the presence of colloidal particles instead of surfactant at the droplet interface, providing steric stabilization. Here, we demonstrate the microscopic attachment and detachment of particles with tunable contact angle at the interface underlying the Pickering emulsion stability. We vary the interfacial tension continuously by varying the temperature offset of a phase-separated binary liquid from its critical point, and employ confocal microscopy to directly observe the particles at the interface to determine their coverage and contact angle as a function of the varying interfacial tension. When the interfacial tension decreases upon approaching the binary liquid's critical point, the contact angle and detachment energy (ΔE) drop, and the particles move out of the interface. Microscopic imaging suggests necking and capillary interactions lead to clustering of the particles, before they eventually desorb from the interface. Macroscopic measurements show that concomitantly, coalescence takes place, and the emulsion loses its stability. These results reveal the interplay of interfacial energies, contact angle and surface coverage that underlies the Pickering emulsion stability, opening up ways to manipulate and design the stability through the microscopic behavior of the adsorbed particles.

Illuminating the impact of non-aqueous solvents on optical trapping

Abstract:The optical trapping of colloidal semiconductor nanomaterials would enable single-particle photophysics, sensing, and chemical measurements. Yet, the trapping of these materials has lagged behind other dielectric and metallic materials due to the prevalence of aqueous solvents in optical trapping experiments, which are not suitable for many semiconductors. Here, we trap particles in multiple solvents and study the impact of non-aqueous solvents on optical trapping dynamics. These experiments and calculations show that there exists an optimal refractive index of the media that maximizes trapping strength, and for semiconductor colloidal nanomaterials, a universal relationship to enhance trap strength. We also find that viscosity has no impact on the trap strength, and only changes the residence times of particles in unstable traps. These results provide an understanding of how solvent selection impacts trapping dynamics and general design rules for experiments in non-aqueous solvents, opening the door for improved sensing, chemistry, and photophysics studies using colloidal semiconductor nanomaterials.

Abstract:Superwetting porous membranes with tunable liquid repellency are highly desirable in broad domains including scientific research, chemical industry, and environmental protection. Such membranes should allow for controllable droplet bouncing or spreading, which is difficult to achieve for low surface energy organic liquids (OLs). Here we develop an interfacial physical parameter to regulate the OL wettability of nanoparticle-embedded membranes by structuring synergistic layers with reconfigurable surface energy components. Under the tunable solid-liquid interaction in the aggregation-induced process, the membranes demonstrate positive/negative liquid gating regularity for polar protic liquids, polar aprotic liquids, and nonpolar liquids. Such a membrane can be employed as self-adaptive gating for various immiscible liquid mixtures with superior separation efficiency and permeation flux, even afford successive achievement of high-performance in situ extraction-back extraction coupling. This study should provide distinctive insights into intrinsic wetting behaviors and have pioneered a rational strategy to design high-performance separation materials for diverse applications.

Abstract:<p>Synthetic microparticles present exciting features owing to their customizable light-matter interaction. We hereby report on the optical trapping of two artificial plasmonic microparticles: one with isotropic nanoparticles covering the surface (homogeneous particle) used as a hot Brownian particle and an anisotropic Janus microparticle, half coated with a gold nano-layer. The homogeneous particle decorated with plasmonic nanoparticles on the surface displays features of hot Brownian dynamics as well as photophoretic motion along z dimension in the optical trap. A dielectric particle was used as a reference particle because it acts as a cold particle with only the gradient force affecting it. In general, Janus particles orient in the trap with the dielectric part in the trap center. Plasmonic gold nanostructures absorb the light energy and produce heat; the photothermal forces significantly affect the optical trapping. These hot microspheres display temperature and Janus orientation dependent position distribution significantly different from cold (purely dielectric) microparticles. The developed method allows for the first time direct determination of the photophoretic (thermal force along light propagation direction) and thermophoretic force (light propagation direction independent force) acting on the respective particles, which opens new paths for analysis and control of micromachines.</p>

Abstract:Membrane-based technologies for separation of miscible liquid mixtures have been developed as potential alternatives to energy-intensive distillation. However, these separation modalities suffer drawbacks of needing thermal phase-change processes, exhibiting low flux, or utilizing complicated membrane preparation procedures. Here, we develop a polar/nonpolar interaction-induced superwetting membrane system to separate miscible organic liquid mixtures in an energy-saving and high-flux manner. The relatively polar (or nonpolar) target liquid component can rapidly permeate the porous membrane and be selectively separated by interacting with the polar (or nonpolar) porous membrane. Meanwhile, the other relatively nonpolar (polar) liquid component is being blocked through an additive inductive agent dragging it by forming strong nonpolar (or polar) interactions. With this newly developed system, we can successfully realize the separation of miscible organic liquid mixtures with a wide range of polarity. Abstract:Manipulation of microparticles in colloidal liquids by using Z-scan-based optical trapping is systematically investigated. A physical model for the creation and annihilation of ordered structures in Z-scan-based optical trapping is presented theoretically and verified experimentally. Disordered, ordered, and intermediate states appearing in Z-scan trapping experiments are discussed and the conditions for realizing phase transition and observing self-induced transparency are clarified. We experimentally demonstrate the high quality and good stability of the formed structures, the sequential trapping of individual microparticles, and the multiple trapping processes. The dependence of the quality of the formed structures on trapping power, scanning speed, and the size and material of microparticles are identified.
