Abstract:An all-fiber Yb-doped kHz-linewidth low-noise linearly polarized single-frequency master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) laser with a stable CW output power of >52 W is demonstrated. By suppressing the intensity noise of the DBR phosphate fiber oscillator, the linewidth of MOPA laser is not noticeably broadened, and an ultra-narrow linewidth of <3 kHz is obtained. Furthermore, the low-noise behavior of MOPA lasers is investigated. A measured relative intensity noise of < −130 dB Hz−1 at frequencies of over 2 MHz, a phase noise above 1 kHz of <5 μrad/Hz1/2, and a signal-to-noise ratio of >63 dB are achieved.

Abstract:A 1603 nm high optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) kHz-linewidth linearly-polarized all-fiber single-frequency master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) is demonstrated. To suppress the amplified spontaneous emission from Yb3+/Er3+ ions with the customized filters and optimize the length of the double cladding active fiber, an over 15 W stable single-longitudinal-mode laser is achieved with an OSNR of >70 dB. A measured laser linewidth of 4.5 kHz and a polarization-extinction ratio of >23 dB are obtained at the full output power. This L-band high-power single-frequency MOPA is promising for high-resolution molecular spectroscopy and pumping of Tm3+-doped or Tm3+/Ho3+ co-doped laser.

Abstract:An all-fiber 10.9 W single-frequency one-stage linearly-polarized master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser at 1560 nm has been demonstrated. The laser linewidth is less than 3.5 kHz and the polarization-extinction ratio (PER) is greater than 24 dB. The measured signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is higher than 70 dB and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is 29.5%. No obvious stimulated Brillouin scattering and the devastating effects of unwanted coupling light were observed.

Abstract:We report experimental results on an all-fiberized linearly polarized single-mode pulse Yb-doped fiber laser/amplifier working at 1064 nm. Using a fiberized acousto-optic Q-switched ytterbium fiber laser as the seed source, a double-clad polarization-maintaining fiber as the gain medium, a (6+1)×1 multimode pump combiner to input the seed signal and the pump power, an Yb fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) is demonstrated. It delivers a linearly polarized pulsed laser output working at 1064 nm with an average power of 30 W, a repetition rate of 40 kHz, a pulse duration time about 30 ns, a polarization extinction ratio greater than 10 dB, and a beam quality factor (M2) of 1.36. Our experiments were pump-power limited and considerable scope remains for further power-scaling of such fiber MOPA using this approach.

Abstract:Based on a low time-domain-instability narrow-linewidth seed and a counter-pumped power-amplifier with a 20/400 mu m core/inner-cladding-diameter active fiber, an all-fiber 2.02 kW and 4.7 GHz linewidth near-diffraction-limited master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) laser at 1064 nm is demonstrated experimentally. By decreasing the time-domain-instability of the signal, the stimulated Raman scattering effect in the power-amplifier stage is suppressed effectively. As a result, a measured M-2 factor of 1.20, and an optical signal-to-noise ratio of >65 dB are obtained at the maximum output power without observation of the transverse mode instability effect. The further enhancement of power scaling of this MOPA laser is restricted by the stimulated Brillouin scattering effect. To the best of our knowledge, this result exhibits the highest output power of all-fiber MOPA laser with narrow linewidth (<5 GHz level), which is highly competitive in spectral beam combining.

Abstract:An all-fiber high-power and broad-frequency-band near-shot-noise-limited kHz-linewidth (Delta nu similar to 1.7 kHz) single-frequency master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser at 1.5 mu m is demonstrated. To significantly suppress the intensity noise of seed laser and mitigate the detrimental effects of amplified spontaneous emission and stimulated Brillouin scattering in fiber amplifiers, more than 23 W of a stable low noise single-frequency laser output is achieved with a relative intensity noise of < -150 dB/Hz @0.5 mW (near to the shot-noise limit: -152.9 dB/Hz) in the frequency band from 0.1 to 50 MHz. It is believed that the achieved laser performance of ultra-low intensity noise and high-power output make the laser source become a promising candidate in further applications such as cold atom optical lattice, quantum key distribution, and gravitational wave detection. Abstract:An all-fiber and ultra compact master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) employing a bidirectionally core-pumped 4-cm-long Er3+/Yb3+-codoped phosphate fiber has been demonstrated experimentally. An over 600mW stable single-frequency amplification laser was generated at 1535nm without appreciable degradation of seed laser characteristics. The measured MOPA laser linewidth is less than 2 kHz, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is higher than 65 dB, and the relative intensity noise (RIN) is -160 dB/Hz for frequencies above 2.0MHz. Abstract:We demonstrate a diode-pump Tm3+-doped all-fiber laser operating at 1908 nm based on a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration. In our work, 152 W of laser output power is generated by a total incident pump power of 434 W at 790 nm, corresponding to the total optical efficiency of 35%. The laser wavelength is 1908.29 nm. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest output power reached around 1908 nm with such a narrow linewidth of 0.18 nm based on a MOPA configuration.

Abstract:We demonstrate a nanosecond all-fiber master oscillator power amplifier with linear-polarized output at 2040 nm, seeded by an in-band-pumped gain-switched thulium-doped fiber laser, which can directly output tens-of-microjoules pulses with designable pulse duration and Gaussian-like pulse profile. After only two stages of amplification, we achieve an average power of 70 W at a pulse width of 114 ns and a repetition rate of 10 kHz, corresponding to a pulse energy of 7 mJ and a peak power of 53.8 kW. Benefit from the on-site polarization control technique we proposed, a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 25 dB at the highest output is also obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest power nanosecond all-fiber laser reported at 2-mu m waveband and the PER is also a record among high-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:An efficient low-noise, single-frequency 1033 nm master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) Yb3+-doped phosphate fiber (YPF) laser system is demonstrated. A maximal output power of 612mW with a laser linewidth of <1.2 kHz is obtained from a 3.7 cm long YPF. By suppressing the intensity noise of the short-cavity phosphate fiber oscillator with a semiconductor optical amplifier, a measured signal-to-noise ratio from the MOPA system of >65 dB and relative intensity noise (RIN) of <-120 dB Hz(-1) at the relaxation oscillation frequency are achieved. Moreover, an RIN of <-152 dB Hz(-1) is achieved for frequencies above 15.0 MHz, which approaches the shot noise limit. This laser system has applications in the fields of optical frequency standards and beam combining.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-power single-frequency master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) fiber laser. The central wavelength of the single-frequency fiber laser seed is 1 063.8 nm, with a linewidth narrower than 20 kHz and output power of 120 mW. By using two-stage amplification, a single-frequency fiber laser with an output power of 122 W is obtained, and the optical-optical conversion efficiency is 72%. No significant; amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) or stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is observed. The, output power can be further increased by launching more pump power.

Abstract:Based on a three-cascaded all-fiber master oscillator power-amplifier configuration, a 1950 nm high-brightness narrow-linewidth linearly-polarized single-frequency fiber laser with an output power of 316 W and a laser linewidth of 8.4 kHz is demonstrated experimentally. With the employment of a square-coiling fiber scheme with round corners and a 20/300 μm-core/cladding polarization-maintaining Tm3+-doped double-cladding fiber, the bending loss of LP11 mode is improved, thus leading the good beam quality, Mx 2 = 1.19 and My 2 = 1.17, herein. Additionally, a polarization-extinction ratio of 17.1 dB and an optical signal-to-noise ratio of >63 dB separately confirm good maintenance of linear polarization and adequate suppression of amplified spontaneous emission in the power amplification.

Abstract:High-efficiency single-frequency compact master-oscillator power amplifiers (MOPAs) based on core-pumped highly Yb-doped phosphate fibers (YPFs), several centimeters long, are investigated theoretically and experimentally. By using numerical modeling and testing different YPF lengths to optimize the amplifier configuration, a stable output of more than 1.06W, at 1014 nm, was measured experimentally from a MOPA laser, with a 4.0 cm long YPF. An optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 81.4%, a typical net gain of more than 20.5 dB, and an output power per unit length of up to 265 mW/cm were obtained with this laser system. The measured optical signal-to-noise ratio of the MOPA laser is higher than 62 dB and the estimated laser linewidth is less than 20 kHz, without obvious broadening or degradation after amplification. Abstract:A 1560 nm high-power linearly-polarized all-fiber single-frequency narrow-linewidth laser with near diffraction-limited beam quality is demonstrated. The Yb–Er energy transfer efficiency and the ability of the signal laser to capture pump light have been improved by specifically choosing the pumping wavelength and the input signal power in the final power amplifier stage of this laser system. Under the off-peak absorption pumping wavelength of 940 nm, along with the maximum input signal power of 6 W, a maximum output power of 102 W with a slope efficiency of 40.5% is acquired. At the highest output power status, a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 15.5 dB, a linewidth of 3.05 kHz, and a beam quality of Mx2 = 1.14, My2 = 1.06 are obtained, respectively. This advanced single-frequency fiber laser has great potential for the long-range coherent Doppler lidar and the next generation of gravitational wave detection.

Abstract:We developed a narrow-linewidth linearly-polarized all-PM-fiber MOPA at the wavelength of 1610 nm. The MOPA consists of a DFB laser diode seed source and three amplifier stages with three different gain fibers. The first amplifier stage employed an Er doped fiber and the second and third amplifier stages employed Er:Yb co-doped fibers. The maximum output power was 8 W. Linewidth of 25 MHz and polarization extinction ratio of 28 dB was obtained. At the maximum output power, no ASE component around 1.55 μm or 1μm was observed.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-power all-fiberized thulium-doped fiber laser in a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) architecture giving output powers up to 100.4 W. A large-mode-area double-clad active fiber is employed as the gain medium. The laser is pumped by pigtailed laser diodes (LD) with a central wavelength of 792 nm. The slope efficiency of the MOPA system is about 56%. No obvious amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is observed in the experiment and higher powers can be obtained straightforwardly by scaling the pump power.

Abstract:We report a single-frequency pulsed Yb-doped fiber master-oscillator-power-amplifier at 1064 nm producing output with pulse energy of 0.6 mJ for a pulse width of 95 ns at a pulse repetition frequency of 5 kHz. Integral to this laser design was the application of a hybrid active-fiber, which integrated a length of heavily Yb-doped phosphosilicate fiber (with a core diameter of 50 μm) with a silica gain fiber (with core diameter of 35 μm). This was used in the power amplifier stage to both suppress stimulated Brillouin scattering and to enhance the gain saturation for improved efficiency and spectral signal to noise ratio. The seed pulses were pre-shaped so that sawtooth-like pulses were obtained after amplification, this having the effect of preventing linewidth broadening induced by self-phase modulation. A spectral linewidth of ∼15 MHz was measured at the maximum peak power of 6.3 kW.

Abstract:Based on core- and in-band-pumped polarization-maintaining Tm3+-doped single-cladding fiber (PM-TSF, the core diameter is 9 mu m) by a 1610 nm fiber laser and a distributed Bragg reflector seed laser, a linearly polarized single-frequency fiber laser (LP-SFFL) at 1950 nm with an output power of 55.3 Wand a laser linewidth of 6.95 kHz is demonstrated. The output beam qualities of M-x(2) and M-y(2) are measured to be 1.01 and 1.03, respectively. The slope efficiencywith respect to the launched pump power is 71.0%, in comparison with a theoretical quantum efficiency of 82.6%. A polarization-extinction ratio of 19 dB and an optical signal-to-noise ratio of 58 dB are obtained from the 1950 nm LP-SFFL. To the best of our knowledge, to date, this is the highest power of 2.0 mu m SFFL output directly from a strict single-mode active fiber. Our experiment offers a promising solution to the current limitations of the high-performance fiber lasers at 2.0 mu m, which is particularly essential for coherent detection.
