Abstract:Selenium was taken as an example to investigate the effect of variable ultraviolet (UV) wavelength and intensity on its photochemical vapor generation (photo-CVG) process. A broadband laser-driven light source (LDLS) and a UV lamp were utilized as irradiation sources for the photo-CVG of trace selenium which was sensitively detected by atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS). Five filters with bandpass at different wavelength (254 nm, 285 nm, 315 nm, 365 nm and 395 nm) were used to filtrate the light from the LDLS and the UV lamp. The signal change of Se(VI) by photo-CVG-AFS was monitored when a TiO2-coated quartz coil was irradiated by variable wavelength and intensity. The experimental results indicated: (1) the efficiency of Se(VI) photo-CVG varied with irradiation wavelength; (2) a synergistic effect existed for the photo-CVG, and the efficiency of the full spectrum was thus better or close to the sum of all wavelengths; and (3) the efficiency of Se(VI) photo-CVG was also affected by the UV intensity.

Abstract:Mercury emissions from industrial stacks pose a hazardous threat to human being. Conventional methods of atomic absorption and plasma emission spectroscopy have their limitations. In order to develop a sensitive real-time measurement approach for industrial applications, an ultraviolet interferometer system capable of Fourier transform spectrochemical measurements has been preliminary studied in our laboratory. Though interferometry approach is mostly used in infrared, the interferometer we developed has showed its great potential for application in atomic emission detection in ultraviolet. We have set up the interferometer in Michelson configuration. Light source of our choice is low pressure mercury pen lamp which provides strong atomic mercury emissions at 253.7nm. Fringe patterns at 253.7nm and 546.1nm were pictured by a charge-coupled-device (CCD) camera. Moving fringes was generated by linear displacement of the movable mirror of the Michelson interferometer. The interferograms at both ultraviolet and visible regions of atomic mercury emission spectrum were recorded. Based on the translation function of movable mirror, wavelength information is retrieved from the interferogram. The error of experimental resolved wavelength is within 2%.

Abstract:Spectroscopy plays a pivotal role in various applications for industrial and commercial analysis. Conventional spectroscopy instruments include various discrete optical components like light sources, monochromators and detectors. These components are mechanically intricate and require space for the mechanisms that adjust and calibrate them, which increases the instrument’s footprint and make them less adjustable for portable applications. This drawback initiated the increase in the demand for miniatured spectral detection systems. Here, we present a low-cost ultra-compact miniaturized spectral detection system, which integrates both linear variable light sources, sample chambers and detectors within a centimetre-scale chip. The linear variable light generation across wavelengths ranging from 480 nm to 600 nm is achieved by stimulating different regions of the ZnCdSeS bandgap-graded semiconductor nanofilm with ultraviolet light. We demonstrate the capability of the system with precise identification of liquids. Our device overcomes the typical miniaturization limits imposed by discrete optical components, and long light paths in conventional spectroscopy instruments and opens up numerous potential applications across various fields due to its portability, ease of use, and lower cost.
UV Light-Emitting-diode Photochemical Mercury Vapor Generation for Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry

Abstract:A new, miniaturized and low power consumption photochemical vapor generation (PVG) technique utilizing an ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) lamp is described, and further validated via the determination of trace mercury. In the presence of formic acid, the mercury cold vapor is favourably generated from Hg(2+) solutions by UV-LED irradiation, and then rapidly transported to an atomic fluorescence spectrometer for detection. Optimum conditions for PVG and interferences from concomitant elements were investigated in detail. Under optimum conditions, a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 μg L(-1) was obtained, and the precision was better than 3.2% (n = 11, RSD) at 1 μg L(-1) Hg(2+). No obvious interferences from any common ions were evident. The methodology was successfully applied to the determination of mercury in National Research Council Canada DORM-3 fish muscle tissue and several water samples.

Abstract:A simple yet ultrasensitive UV photochemical vapor generation (photo-CVG) is proposed for the speciation analysis of Se(IV) and Se(VI). The new photo-CVG, which is based on Se(IV) or Se(VI) reacting with an organic acid under different reaction conditions, can be coupled to AFS or ICP-MS for the speciation analysis of Se(IV) and Se(VI) in real samples such as table salt and water samples without chromatographic separation. At low temperature, only Se(IV) can be photochemically converted to selenium volatile species, and this is used for its selective determination; however, by using boiling water bath together with nano-TiO2 as a catalyst, both Se(IV) and Se(VI) can be photochemically converted to selenium volatile species, thus determining the total of Se(IV) and Se(VI). Therefore, Se(VI) concentration can be calculated from the difference between the total and Se(IV) concentration. Optimal reaction conditions and instrumental parameters are investigated; and the interferences from transition metals and other ions, as well as the photo-CVG mechanism, are discussed. The limits of detection range from 0.02 to 0.1 ng mL(-1), depending on the kind of organic acid and the detector. The accuracy of the method is validated by determining Se(IV) in certified reference water sample. Real samples including commercial table salt, waste water and mineral water were successfully analyzed. This is a simple, relatively green, highly selective and sensitive, yet inexpensive method for the speciation analysis of Se(IV) and Se(VI).

Abstract:An online UV photolysis and UV/TiO 2 photocatalysis reduction device (UV–UV/TiO 2 PCRD) and an electrochemical vapor generation (ECVG) cell have been used for the first time as an interface between high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) for selenium speciation. The newly designed ECVG cell of approximately 115 μL dead volume consists of a carbon fiber cathode and a platinum loop anode; the atomic hydrogen generated on the cathode was used to reduce selenium to vapor species for AFS determination. The noise was greatly reduced compared with that obtained by use of the UV–UV/TiO 2 PCRD–KBH 4 –acid interface. The detection limits obtained for seleno- DL -cystine (SeCys), selenite (Se IV ), seleno- DL -methionine (SeMet), and selenate (Se VI ) were 2.1, 2.9, 4.3, and 3.5 ng mL −1 , respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to the speciation of selenium in water-soluble extracts of garlic shoots cultured with different selenium species. The results obtained suggested that UV–UV/TiO 2 PCRD–ECVG should be an effective interface between HPLC and AFS for the speciation of elements amenable to vapor generation, and is superior to methods involving KBH 4 .

Abstract:Nano g-C3N4/TiO2 composite was synthetized and utilized as a novel photocatalyst for enhanced photochemical vapor generation for sample introduction to atomic fluorescence spectrometry. High reduction efficiency for Se (VI) was obtained to facilitate its ultrasensitive determination by atomic fluorescence spectrometry, with a limit of detection of 0.08ngmL−1. The photocatalytic mechanism of this composite was also discussed and demonstrated its highly efficient photocatalytic capacity and promissing applications in trace selenium (VI) determination and extraction.

Abstract:We reported novel Ag-TiO(2)- and ZrO(2)-based photocatalytic vapor generation (PCVG) systems as effective sample introduction techniques for further improving the sensitivity of the atomic spectrometric determination of selenium for the first time, in which the conduction band electron served as a "reductant" to reduce selenium species including Se(VI) and convert them directly into volatile H(2)Se, which was easily separated from the sample matrix and underwent more effectively subsequent atomization and/or ionization. These two PCVG systems helped us to overcome the problem encountered in the most conventional KBH(4)/OH(-)-H(+) system, in that Se(VI) was hardly converted into volatile selenium species without the aid of prereduction procedures. The limits of detection (LODs) (3σ) of the four most typical Se(IV), Se(VI), selenocystine ((SeCys)(2)), and selenomethionine (SeMet) species were, respectively, down to 1.2, 1.8, 7.4, and 0.9 ng mL(-1) in UV/Ag-TiO(2)-HCOOH, and 0.7, 1.0, 4.2, and 0.5 ng mL(-1) in UV/ZrO(2)-HCOOH with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 5.1% (n = 9 at 1 μg mL(-1)) when using atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) under flow injection mode. They reached 10, 14, 18, and 8 pg mL(-1) in UV/Ag-TiO(2)-HCOOH, and 6, 7, 10, and 5 pg mL(-1) in UV/ZrO(2)-HCOOH with the RSDs lower than 4.4% (n = 9 at 10 ng mL(-1)) when using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). After the two PCVG systems were validated using certified reference materials GBW(E)080395 and SELM-1, they were applied to determine the total Se in the selenium-enriched yeast sample and used as interfaces between high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and AFS or ICPMS for selenium speciation in the water- and/or enzyme-extractable fractions of the selenium-enriched yeast.

Abstract:This paper presents a handheld micro-fluorescence spectrometer with an integrated ultraviolet light-emitting diode. A small transmission grating was used as a dispersive element to disperse light. The spectrum was detected by a CCD array. The instrument can be connected to a PC or a smartphone through a USB cable for data processing and spectrum display. The spectrometer is 30 × 30 × 100 mm 3 only. The spectrometer with a wavelength range from 380 to 750 nm had a spectral resolution of 3 nm. The fluorescence spectra from edible oil, chlorophyll, and paper were measured by the spectrometer we designed. This spectrometer has the advantages of compact structure, small size, light weight, fast detection speed, convenient use, and low cost.

Abstract:Ultraviolet vapor generation (UVG), as an environmental/user-friendly and efficient sampling approach, was first combined with the gas phase enrichment of Se by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) microplasma. Volatile Se species from UVG, being much more complicated than conventional hydrides, can be trapped quantitatively (similar to 100%) on the quartz surface of DBD tube under O-2-containing atmosphere and released (similar to 100%) under H-2-containing atmosphere. The absolute detection limit (LOD) for Se was 4 pg (injection volume = 1.2 mL), and the linear (R-2 > 0.995) range was 0.05-50 mu g/L. The results were in good agreement with those of certified reference materials (CRMs) of water and soil samples, and spiked recoveries for real samples were 90-102% with 1-10% relative standard deviations (RSDs). By gas phase analyte enrichment, the proposed method improved analytical sensitivity (peak height) by 16 times. The mechanism was deduced that dominating SeCO species besides H2Se generating from UVG were all trapped on the DBD quartz tube surface as SeO2 or selenite and then released/transported as atoms to the detection zone. The combination of UVG and DBD can facilitate the green uses, miniaturization, and portability revealing its promising potential in field elemental analysis.

Abstract:Metal organic framework MIL-125-NH2 was used as a photocatalyst for the photochemical vapor generation to establish an efficient and accurate method for highly sensitive determination of trace selenium by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The mixture of Se (IV) and Se (VI), MIL-125-NH2 nanoparticles and a low molecular weight organic acid was mixed to generate gaseous selenium-containing species which was separated from its liquid phase and transported to inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer for determination. Influencing factors including carrier gas flow rate, type and concentration of catalyst, type and concentration of organic acid, UV irradiation time and power, and sample pH were carefully studied. Under the optimized conditions, a catalytic efficiency of more than 80% was achieved. The limits of detection for Se (IV) and Se (VI) were found to be the same and as low as 0.3ng/mL. The relative standard deviation of Se (IV) and Se (VI) was 2.7% and 2.1% at 20ng/mL (n=11), respectively. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by analysis of natural mineral water and certified reference materials.

Abstract:A novel thin-film reactor is described and evaluated for its analytical performance with photochemical vapor generation (TF-PVG). The device, comprising both the generator and a gas-liquid separator, utilizes a vertical central quartz rod onto which the sample is pumped to yield a thin liquid film conducive to the rapid escape of generated hydrophobic species. The rod is housed within a concentric quartz tube through which a flow of argon carrier/stripping gas is passed to remove and transport the generated species to a detector, which in this study is an inductively coupled argon plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The concentric quartz tube is itself surrounded by a 78-turn 0.5 m long quartz coil low-pressure mercury discharge lamp operating at 20 W. The performance of this thin-film photoreactor was evaluated through comparison of analytical figures of merit for detection of a number of elements undergoing PVG in the presence of formic or acetic acid with those arising from conventional solution nebulization under optimized conditions. The TF-PVG reactor provided sensitivity enhancements, of 110-, 120-, 130-, 250-, 120-, 230-, 78-, 1.3-, 16-, and 32-fold for As, Sb, Bi, Se, Te, Hg, Ni, Co, Fe, and I, respectively, and detection limit enhancements of 110-, 140-, 170-, 270-, 200-, 300-, 160-, 2.7-, 50-, and 44-fold for these same elements. Vapor generation efficiencies ranged from 20-100% for this suite of analytes. The utility of this technique was demonstrated by the determination of Fe and Ni in Certified Reference Materials DORM-3 (fish protein) and DOLT-4 (dogfish liver tissue).

Abstract:Inspired by the headspace sampling (HS) device, a versatile high-throughput photochemical reactor with twenty vessels serving as both the photochemical vapor generator and the HS device was developed for the rapid and sensitive determination of mercury, nickel, and selenium by coupling photochemical vapor generation (PVG) to atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) or point discharge optical emission spectrometry (μPD-OES). The photochemical reactor utilized a specially designed annular UV lamp around which the vessels containing sample solution were automatically rotated and irradiated to yield gaseous analyte species. Subsequently, the species escaped into the headspace of vessels prior to introduction to the atomic spectrometer. Compared with the conventional flow injection (FI) or continuous flow (CF) PVG, the developed PVG-HS method possesses several unique advantages including high throughput (260 pcs h), high sensitivity, and the elimination of matrix interference from transition metal ions and the memory effect associated with the quantification of mercury. Limits of detection (LODs) of 0.002, 0.007, and 0.01 μg L were obtained for Hg (II), Ni (II), and Se (IV) by PVG-HS-AFS, respectively, and 0.02 and 0.2 μg L were obtained for Hg (II) and Ni (II) by PVG-HS-μPD-OES, respectively. The practicality of the reactor was evaluated by the detection of Hg (II), Ni (II), and Se (IV) in five certified reference materials, including water (GBW08603, GBW08607, and GBW(E)080395), National Research Council Canada dogfish liver (DOLT-5), fish protein (DORM-4), and three river water samples with good recoveries (92-106%).

Abstract:Chemical vapor generation techniques have long been considered as important ways of sample introduction for analytical atomic spectrometry. In this paper, a low temperature plasma assisted chemical vapor generation method which avoids the massive use of consumptive chemical agents was proposed by using atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge. The plasma was generated by hydrogen doped argon gas flow through a quartz tube, serving as a dielectric barrier, which had a copper wire inner electrode and a copper foil outer electrode. An alternative high voltage was applied to electrodes to ignite and sustain the plasma. Sample solutions were converted to aerosol by a nebulizer and then mixed with the plasma to generate hydrides. To confirm the utility of this method, four hydride forming elements, As, Te, Sb and Se, were determined by coupling the low temperature plasma assisted chemical vapor generation system with an atomic fluorescence spectrometer. Responses of As, Te, Sb and Se were linear in the range of 0.5–20μgmL−1. The RSDs of As, Te, Sb and Se in the present method were less than 4.1% and the absolute detection limits for As, Te, Sb and Se were 0.6ng, 1.0ng, 1.4ng and 1.2ng, respectively. Furthermore, four arsenic species were determined after HPLC separation. The method is green and simple compared with hydride generation with tetrahydroborate and the most attractive characteristic is micro-sampling. In principle, the method offers potential advantages of miniaturization, less consumption and ease of automation.
Hydride Generation for Headspace Solid-Phase Extraction with CdTe Quantum Dots Immobilized on Paper for Sensitive Visual Detection of Selenium.

Abstract:A low-cost, simple, and highly selective analytical method was developed for sensitive visual detection of selenium in human urine both outdoors and at home, by coupling hydride generation with headspace solid-phase extraction using quantum dots (QDs) immobilized on paper. The visible fluorescence from the CdTe QDs immobilized on paper was quenched by H2Se from hydride generation reaction and headspace solid-phase extraction. The potential mechanism was investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as Density Functional Theory (DFT). Potential interferences from coexisting ions, particularly Ag(+), Cu(2+), and Zn(2+), were eliminated. The selectivity was significantly increased because the selenium hydride was effectively separated from sample matrices by hydride generation. Moreover, due to the high sampling efficiency of hydride generation and headspace solid phase extraction, the sensitivity and the limit of detection (LOD) were significantly improved compared to conventional methods. A LOD of 0.1 μg L(-1) and a relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 7) of 2.4% at a concentration of 20 μg L(-1) were obtained when using a commercial spectrofluorometer as the detector. Furthermore, a visual assay based on the proposed method was developed for the detection of Se, 5 μg L(-1) of selenium in urine can be discriminated from the blank solution with the naked eye. The proposed method was validated by analysis of certified reference materials and human urine samples with satisfactory results.
Visible Light Photochemical Vapor Generation Using Metal-Free G-C3n4/cqds Composites As Catalyst: Selective and Ultrasensitive Detection of Mercury by ICP-MS

Abstract:Photochemical vapor generation (PCVG) is a green and effective sampling technology for analytical atomic spectrometry, and in recent years it has been received continuous attention. In this work, visible light photochemical vapor generation was achieved with metal-free g-C3N4/CQDs (carbon nitride/carbon quantum dots) composites as a photocatalyst, and used for selective and ultrasensitive detection of total mercury by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The limit of detection can be as low as 8ngL−1, making it one of the most sensitive methods for mercury determination. The visible light photochemical vapor generation can also be coupled to other analytical atomic spectrometric techniques.

Abstract:Due to the large size and high energy consumption of instruments, field elemental speciation analysis is still challenging so far. In this work, a portable and compact system device (230 mm length × 38 mm width × 84 mm height) was fabricated by using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology for the field speciation analyses of mercury and inorganic selenium. The device comprises a cold vapor generator, photochemical vapor generator, and miniaturized point discharge optical emission spectrometer (μPD-OES). For mercury, inorganic mercury (IHg) was selectively reduced to Hg0 by cold vapor generation, whereas the reductions of both IHg and methylmercury (MeHg) were obtained by photochemical vapor generation (PVG) in the presence of formic acid. For selenium, Se(IV) and total inorganic selenium were converted to their volatile species by PVG in the presence and the absence of nano-TiO2, respectively. The generated volatile species were consequently detected by μPD-OES. Limits of detection of MeHg, IHg, Se(IV), and Se(VI) were 0.1, 0.1, 5.2, and 3.5 μg L-1, respectively. Precision expressed as the relative standard deviations (n = 11) were better than 4.5%. The accuracy and practicality of the proposed method were evaluated by the analyses of Certified Reference Materials (DORM-4, DOLT-5, and GBW(E)080395) and several environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries (95-103%). This work confirms that 3D printing has great potential to fabricate a simple, miniaturized, easy-to-operate, and low gas and power consuming atomic spectrometer for field elemental speciation analysis.
