Abstract:Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The realization of an efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue largely because of an inherent difficulty in simultaneously ensuring the phase-matching condition and a coherent multiple-resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second-harmonic generation in an on-chip LiNbO3 microresonator fabricated by femtosecond-laser direct writing. We overcome the above difficulty by selectively exciting high-order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Thanks to the low optical absorption and high nonlinear optical coefficient of LiNbO3 crystal, we achieve a normalized conversion efficiency of 1.106 x 10(-3)/mW in the on-chip LiNbO3 microdisk with a diameter of approximately 102 mu m.

Abstract:High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Abstract:We demonstrate flexible nonlinear frequency up-conversion in high-Q lithium niobate photonic crystal nanobeam resonators. The high optical Q together with strong optical mode confinement allows us to observe clear second harmonic generation and sum frequency generation with an optical power around only tens of microWatts. These demonstrations show that high-Q lithium niobate photonic crystal nanoresonators are of great promise for nonlinear photonic applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals of lithium niobate with square lattices were fabricated. In these crystals, efficient quasiphase-matched second-harmonic generation was demonstrated by using second-order quasiphase matching. As a mode-locked Nd:yttritium–aluminum–garnet laser at 1064 nm with 35 ps pulse was used, we obtained an average power of 0.86 mW at 532 nm with 2.73 mW input, which corresponds to 42% internal conversion efficiency. The variations of second-harmonic output with crystal temperature and incident angle were measured. In addition, the relation between the second-harmonic output and reversed duty cycle was studied. All the experimental results are well consistent with simulations.

Abstract:Boosting second-order optical nonlinear frequency conversion over subwavelength thickness has long been pursued through optical resonance in micro- and nanophotonics. However, the availability of thin film materials with high second-order nonlinearity is limited to III-V semiconductors, which have low transparency in the visible. Here, we experimentally demonstrated strongly enhanced second harmonic generation in one-dimensional heterostructure cavities on thin film lithium niobate. A guided-mode resonance resonator and distributed Bragg reflectors are combined for both efficient coupling and electromagnetic field localization. Over 1200 times second harmonic generation enhancement is experimentally realized compared with flat thin film lithium niobate through optimizing the trade-off between quality factor and mode volume, leading to a record high normalized conversion efficiency of 2.03 x 10(-5) cm(2)/GW under 1.92 MW/cm(2) pump intensity. Our approach could inspire the miniaturization and integration of compact resonant nonlinear photonic devices on thin film lithium niobate.

Abstract:Lithium niobate has received interest in nonlinear frequency conversion due to its wide transparency window, from ultraviolet to mid-infrared spectral regions, and large second-order nonlinear susceptibility. However, its nanostructure is generally difficult to etch, resulting in low- Q resonance and lossy nanostructures for second harmonic generation. By applying the concept of bound states in the continuum, we performed theoretical and experimental investigations on high- Q resonant etchless thin-film lithium niobate with SiO 2 nanostructures on top for highly efficient second harmonic generation. In the fabricated nanostructured devices, a resonance with a Q factor of 980 leads to the strong enhancement of second harmonic generation by over 1500 times compared with that in unpatterned lithium niobate thin film. Although the pump slightly deviates from central resonance, an absolute conversion efficiency of 6.87×10 −7 can be achieved with the fundamental pump peak intensity of 44.65 MW/cm 2 , thus contributing to the normalized conversion efficiency of 1.54×10 −5 cm 2 /GW. Our work establishes an etchless lithium niobate device for various applications, such as integrated nonlinear nanophotonics, terahertz frequency generation, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Second-order optical nonlinear effects (second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation) are demonstrated in the telecommunication band by periodic poling of thin films of lithium niobate wafer-bonded on silicon substrates and rib-loaded with silicon nitride channels to attain ridge waveguide with cross-sections of ~2 µm2. A nonlinear conversion of 8% is obtained with a pulsed input in 4 mm long waveguides. The choice of silicon substrate makes the platform potentially compatible with silicon photonics, and therefore may pave the path towards on-chip nonlinear and quantum-optic applications.

Abstract:Whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities are very important in both fundamental science and practical applications, among which on-chip second-order nonlinear microresonators play an important role in integrated photonic functionalities. Here we demonstrate resonant second-harmonic generation (SHG) and cascaded third-harmonic generation (THG) in a lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) microdisk resonator. Efficient SHG in the visible range was obtained with only several mW input powers at telecom wavelengths. THG was also observed through a cascading process, which reveals simultaneous phase matching and strong mode coupling in the resonator. Cascading of second-order nonlinear processes gives rise to an effectively large third-order nonlinearity, which makes on-chip second-order nonlinear microresonators a promising frequency converter for integrated nonlinear photonics.

Abstract:Second-harmonic generation from nanostructures has been widely adopted to construct functional nanophotonic devices such as high-sensitivity biosensors, and realizing enhanced nonlinear conversion efficiency is important to improve device performance. In this study, diamond-like dodecahedral lithium niobate nanocrystals were fabricated via a solvothermal method, and the magnetic dipole resonances could be effectively excited. This way, the incident energy could be confined effectively within the nanoparticles. Combined with the strong intrinsic second-order nonlinear responses of the lithium niobate material, enhanced second-harmonic generation can be achieved with the fabricated nanocrystals. The experimental results showed that when the pump wavelength approached the magnetic resonance of the nanoparticles, the second-harmonic emission was strongly enhanced, and the nonlinear conversion efficiency was as large as 2.0x10(-6) W-1. The fabricated lithium niobate nanocrystals have great application potential for enhanced secondharmonic generation and the design of functional nonlinear nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate second harmonic generation in a gallium nitride photonic crystal cavity embedded in a two-dimensional free-standing photonic crystal platform on silicon. The photonic crystal nano-cavity is optically pumped with a continuous-wave laser at telecom wavelengths in the transparency window of the nitride material. The harmonic generation is evidenced by the spectral range of the emitted signal, the quadratic power dependence vs. input power, and the spectral dependence of second harmonic signal. The harmonic emission pattern is correlated to the harmonic polarization generated by the second-order nonlinear susceptibilities chi((2))(zxx), chi((2))(zyy) and the electric fields of the fundamental cavity mode. Abstract:Nonlinear wavelength conversion is essential for many classical and quantum pho-tonic applications. The underlying second-order nonlinear optical processes, however, generally exhibit limited spectral bandwidths that impact their application potential. Here we use a high-Q X-cut lithium niobate microdisk resonator to demonstrate both second-harmonic generation and spontaneous parametric down-conversion on chip. In particular, our lithium niobate microresonator, with its wide-range cyclic phase matching and rich optical mode structures, is able to achieve ultra-broadband spontaneous parametric down-conversion, with a bandwidth over 400 nm, inferred from recorded spectra of the down-converted photons. The produced biphoton pairs exhibit strong temporal correlation, with a coincidence-to-accidental ratio measured to be 43.1. Our device is promising for integrated quantum photonics where optical frequency could be used as a degree of freedom for signal processing.
