Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is one of the most promising metal oxide semiconductors for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. Much efforts have been dedicated on accelerating the sluggish surface water oxidation kinetics. In this study, plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition and subsequent removal of Al2O3 ultrathin overlayers on bismuth vanadate were implemented to achieve the successful passivation of surface states and significant enhancement of PEC performance. Al2O3 ultrathin overlayers were first coated on BiVO4 surface via plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition with various deposition cycles, which resulted in the decrease of PEC water oxidation activity due to the poor conductivity. The subsequent removal of surface amorphous Al2O3 passivated the surface states of the photoanodes and significantly enhanced the photocurrent densities. The passivated BiVO4 exhibited a photocurrent density of 1.34 mA·cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is 73% higher than that of unmodified BiVO4. This work provides a novel strategy and deep insights on surface modification of semiconductor for photoelectrochemical energy conversion.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting in a pH-neutral electrolyte has attracted more and more attention in the field of sustainable energy. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a highly promising photoanode material for PEC water splitting. Additionally, cobaltous phosphate (CoPi) is a material that can be synthesized from Earth's rich materials and operates stably in pH-neutral conditions. Herein, we propose a strategy to enhance the charge transport ability and improve PEC performance by electrodepositing the in situ synthesis of a CoPi layer on the BiVO4. With the CoPi co-catalyst, the water oxidation reaction can be accelerated and charge recombination centers are effectively passivated on BiVO4. The BiVO4/CoPi photoanode shows a significantly enhanced photocurrent density (Jph) and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE), which are 1.8 and 3.2 times higher than those of a single BiVO4 layer, respectively. Finally, the FTO/BiVO4/CoPi photoanode displays a photocurrent density of 1.39 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE, an onset potential (Von) of 0.30 VRHE, and an ABPE of 0.45%, paving a potential path for future hydrogen evolution by solar-driven water splitting.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BVO) is regarded as an exceptional photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but it is restricted by the severe photocorrosion and slow water oxidation kinetics. Herein, a synergistic strategy combined with a Co3(HPO4)2(OH)2 (CoPH) cocatalyst and an Al2O3 (ALO) passivation layer was proposed for enhanced PEC performance. The CoPH/ALO/BVO photoanode exhibits an impressive photocurrent density of 4.9 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE and an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of 1.47% at 0.76 VRHE. This outstanding PEC performance can be ascribed to the suppressed surface charge recombination, facilitated interfacial charge transfer, and accelerated water oxidation kinetics with the introduction of the CoPH cocatalyst and ALO passivation layer. This work provides a novel and synergistic approach to design an efficient and stable photoanode for PEC applications by combining an oxygen evolution cocatalyst and a passivation layer.

Abstract:Water oxidation is an endothermic and kinetics-sluggish reaction; the research of photoanodes with photothermal and cocatalytic properties is of great significance. Herein, BiVO4/CoAl2O4 film photoanodes were studied for solar water splitting through coupling spinel p-type CoAl2O4 nanoparticles on n-type BiVO4 films. Compared to the BiVO4 photoanode, better performance was observed on the BiVO4/CoAl2O4 photoanode during water oxidation. A photocurrent of 3.47 mA/cm(2) was produced on the BiVO4/CoAl2O4 photoanode at 1.23 V vs RHE, which is two-fold to the BiVO4 photoanode (1.70 mA/cm(2)). Additionally, the BiVO4/CoAl2O4 photoanodes showed an acceptable stability for water oxidation. The BiVO4/CoAl2O4 photoanode being of higher water oxidation performance could be attributed to the presence of p-n heterojunction, cocatalytic, and photothermal effects. In specific, under the excitation of lambda < 520 nm light, the holes produced in/on BiVO4 can be transferred to CoAl2O4 owing to the p-n heterojunctions of BiVO4/CoAl2O4. Meanwhile, the temperature on the BiVO4/CoAl2O4 photoanode rises quickly up to similar to 53 degrees C under AM 1.5 G irradiation due to the photothermal property of CoAl2O4 through capturing the 520 < lambda < 720 nm light. The temperature rising on the BiVO4/CoAl2O4 photoanode improves the cocatalytic activity of CoAl2O4 and modifies the wettability of BiVO4/CoAl2O4 for effective water oxidation.

Abstract:The development of BiVO4-based heterojunction photoanodes with thermodynamic and kinetic advantages is one of the breakthrough directions to fulfill the potential of BiVO4 for solar water splitting. Here, we designed and investigated a Cu3Mo2O9/BiVO4 heterojunction film photoanode that consisted of p-type Cu3Mo2O9 nanoparticles and an n-type BiVO4 film for water oxidation. Compared to the BiVO4 film, the resultant Cu3Mo2O9/BiVO4 heterojunction film shows better activity and stability during water oxidation owing to the synergistic effect of the p-n heterojunction and Cu3Mo2O9 cocatalysis. Specifically, the formed p-n heterojunctions of Cu3Mo2O9/BiVO4 are thermodynamically favorable to the separation and transfer of photoexcited holes-electrons, which result in a higher activity of the Cu3Mo2O9/BiVO4 photoanode for water oxidation. Meanwhile, the Cu3Mo2O9 electrocatalysis could be initiated by the photoexcited holes of BiVO4, which can enhance the water oxidation kinetics and stability of the Cu3Mo2O9/BiVO4 film photoanode. Our study provides a reference to design BiVO4-based heterojunction photoanodes with integrated advantages in thermodynamics and kinetics for water splitting.

Abstract:Despite being considered as one of the most promising semiconductor photocatalysts, BiVO4 still suffers the problems of inefficient light harvesting, multiple charge recombination channels and back reactions, restricting its application for solar energy conversion. Here, we demonstrate a unique Bi2O4(400)/BiVO4(040) heterojunction prepared via an oxidation conversion process, which dramatically accelerated the interfacial charge transfer compared to pure BiVO4. Furthermore, with Mo doping, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) loading and Ni-FeOOH co-catalyst deposition, the resulting Bi2O4/Mo-BiVO4/CQDs/Ni-FeOOH photoanode reaches a remarkable photocurrent density of 6.7 mA/cm(2) at 1.23 V vs. RHE under AM 1.5G irradiation in the absence of hole scavengers. Our findings demonstrate that proper material interface engineering together with composition tuning provides a viable route to achieve highly efficient solar water splitting. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. Anthraquinone-based polymer modified BiVO4 photoanode with strong electron-withdrawing functional groups for boasting photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Abstract:The photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance ofBiVO4 is limited by sluggish water oxidation kinetics and severe carrier recombination. Herein, a novel high-performance BiVO4/NiFe-NOAQ photoanode is prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method, using BiVO4 and 1-Nitroanthraquinone (NOAQ) as raw materials. The BiVO4/NiFe-NOAQ photoanode has an excellent photocurrent density of 5.675 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE, which is 3.35 times higher than that of the pure BiVO4 (1.693 mA cm-2) photoanode. The BiVO4/NiFe-NOAQ shows a significant improvement in charge separation efficiency (86.12 %) and charge injection efficiency (87.86 %). The improvement is ascribable to the NiFe-NOAQ form a type II heterojunction with BiVO4 to inhibit carrier recombination. More importantly, the kinetic isotope experiment suggests that the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process can enhance the charge transfer of BiVO4/NiFe-NOAQ. The contact angle measurements show that modifying functional groups enhanced the hydrophilicity of BiVO4/NiFe-NOAQ, which can further accelerate the PCET process. The XPS and PL results as well as the tauc plot indicate that the strong electron-withdrawing ability of -NO2 which can promote the extension of π conjugation, results in more π electron delocalization and produces more efficient active sites, thus achieving efficient photoelectrochemical water oxidation.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ), a widely utilized photoanode material, encounters limitations in its application due to sluggish water oxidation kinetics. In this study, a titanium-doped, NiFeO x -modified BiVO 4 photoanode (Ti–BiVO 4 /NiFeO x ) was developed using electrodeposition and solution immersion method. As-prepared photoanode demonstrates significantly enhanced photocurrent density, achieving 5.4 mA cm - 2 at 1.23 V RHE , which is threefold than that of the pristine BiVO 4 photoanode. Additionally, it exhibits excellent long-term photo stability. The incorporation of titanium can modulate the bandgap of BiVO 4 , and the co-catalytic modification with NiFeO x can promote surface charge transfer, thereby enhancing the water oxidation kinetics. The Mott-Schottky analysis reveals a higher carrier density for Ti–BiVO 4 /NiFeO x . Computational findings further illustrate that the Ti–BiVO 4 /NiFeO x photoanode boasts an 86.58% surface charge transfer efficiency at 1.23 V RHE , substantially surpassing the unmodified BiVO 4 photoanode (43.63%). Consequently, the combined strategies of bandgap control and interface engineering effectively enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of BiVO 4 photoanodes, presenting a promising pathway for water splitting applications.

Boosted Water Oxidation Activity and Kinetics on BiVO4 Photoanodes with Multihigh-Index Crystal Facets.

Abstract:The crystal facet of the BiVO4 photoanode has potential influence on its charge-transfer and separation properties as well as water oxidation kinetics. In the present work, a BiVO4 polyhedral film with exposed {121}, {132}, {211}, and {251} high-index facets was synthesized by a facile Bi2O3 template-induced method and investigated as a photoanode for water oxidation. In comparison with the normal BiVO4 film with a {121} monohigh-index facet, the BiVO4 film with multihigh-index crystal facets shows higher activity and faster kinetics for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. Specifically, a higher photocurrent density of 1.21 mA/cm2 was achieved on the multihigh-index facet BiVO4 photoanode at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 M Na2SO4, which is about 200% improved over the normal BiVO4 photoanode (0.61 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs RHE). In addition, a negative shift of 300 mV onset potential for water oxidation was observed on the as-prepared BiVO4 photoanode (0.22 V vs RHE) relative to the normal BiVO4 photoanode (0.52 V vs RHE) in 0.1 M Na2SO4. Although the UV-vis absorbance property and water oxidation pathway not be changed, the charge-transfer and separation properties as well as the overall water oxidation kinetics on the multihigh-index facet BiVO4 film were boosted obviously. Theory calculations reveal that the adsorption of H2O molecules on BiVO4{121} and {132} high-index facets is energetically favorable for subsequent dissociation and oxidation relative to that on {010} and {110} low-index facets. Furthermore, the water oxidation limiting step on {121} and {132} high-index facets of BiVO4 is changed to the step of two protons reacting with •O to form •OOH species (•O + H2O(l) + 2H+ + 2e- → •OOH + 3H+ + 3e-), which is different from the limiting step on {010} and {110} low-index facets that corresponds to the dissociation of H2O to •OH (2H2O(l) + • → •OH + H2O(l) + H+ + e-). In addition, the overpotential of water oxidation limiting step on BiVO4{121} and {132} high-index facets is lower than that on {010} and {110} low-index facets.

Abstract:Currently, the sluggish charge transfer kinetics and water oxidation kinetics are still the bottlenecks faced by BiVO 4 photoanodes at present. Herein, an excellent 3 C functional layer is reported for the first time to tackle these problems of BiVO 4 photoanode. 3 C was prepared using a facile electrochemical method with 1,2-dimethylimidazole as a carbon source. In the BiVO 4 / 3 C photoanode, Co 3 C acts as a novel oxygen evolution co-catalyst to significantly enhance water oxidation kinetics. An electron depletion layer formed around Zn species provides a strong driving force for the migration of photogenerated holes from BiVO 4 to Co 3 C catalytic sites. Furthermore, the alternating distribution of Co 3 C and Zn species on the surface of BiVO 4 photoanodes increases the utilization efficiency of Co 3 C co-catalyst. The BiVO 4 / 3 C system constructed in this work not only demonstrates good photoelectrochemical performance in electrolytes (4.6 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE without any hole scavengers), but also enables water splitting in natural seawater. This work demonstrates a novel functional layer that simultaneously facilitates photogenerated carrier transfer and water oxidation kinetics, which holds great promise for constructing high-performance water oxidation systems in various photoanodes.

Abstract:A MoO3/BiVO4 heterojunction film consisting of dispersed nano-MoO3 on the surface of BiVO4 nanoflake was constructed for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. In comparison with bare BiVO4 and MoO3 film, the MoO3/BiVO4 heterojunction film shows enhanced water oxidation activity. At 0.8V vs. SCE, the photocurrent on the optimal MoO3/BiVO4 heterojunction film increases by up to about 6 times compared to that on the bare BiVO4 film. The conduction and valence band potential of MoO3 are found to be more positive than those of BiVO4, and the electric conductivity for MoO3 and BiVO4 is on the order of 10−6Scm−1 and 10−9Scm−1, respectively. Thus, the origin of enhanced water oxidation activity on the MoO3/BiVO4 heterojunction film can be primarily ascribed to the band potential and conductivity differences between MoO3 and BiVO4, which are advantageous for separating and transferring the surface charge of BiVO4.
Green light all the way: Triple modification synergistic modification effect to enhance the photoelectrochemical water oxidation performance of BiVO4 photoanode

Abstract:The recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs of the photoanode seriously impairs the application of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) in photoelectrochemical water splitting. To address this issue, we prepared a Yb:BiVO4/Co3O4/FeOOH composite photoanode by employing drop-casting and soaking methods to attach Co3O4/FeOOH cocatalysts to the surface of ytterbium-doped BiVO4. The prepared Yb:BiVO4/Co3O4/FeOOH photoanode demonstrates a high photocurrent density of 4.89 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is 5.1 times that of bare BiVO4 (0.95 mA cm-2). Detailed characterization and testing demonstrated that Yb doping narrows the band gap and significantly enhances the carrier density. Furthermore, Co3O4 serves as a hole transfer layer to expedite hole migration and diminish recombination, while FeOOH offers additional active sites and minimizes surface trap states, thus boosting stability. The synergistic effects of Yb doping and Co3O4/FeOOH cocatalyst significantly improved the reaction kinetics and overall performance of PEC water oxidation. This work provides a strategy for designing efficient photoanodes for PEC water oxidation.
Enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation over a surface hydroxylated BiVO4 photoanode: advantageous charge separation and water dissociation

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is one of the most effective photoanode materials for photoelectrochemical water splitting, while its reaction rate is greatly limited by the poor separation efficiency of photo-generated charges and sluggish kinetics. In this work, the surface hydroxylation strategy is carried out to overcome above shortcomings. A simply post-synthetic NaOH immersion method is taken to successfully hydroxylate BiVO4 photoanode surface without affecting its bulk properties. The modified surface hydroxyl group not only promotes the photo-generated charges separation efficiency of hydroxylated BiVO4, but also tailors its local electronic structure to form the high-valence Bi(3+x)+ states. The Bi(3+x)+ species acted as the active site is advantageous for water dissociation, thus decreasing the free energy barrier of the potential-determining step for the boosted overall water oxidation kinetics. As a result, the best hydroxylated BiVO4 photoanode achieves a higher photocurrent density of 1.14 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE under visible light irradiation that is 4.75 times than 0.24 mA cm-2 of bare BiVO4, and meanwhile, a cathodic shift of 190 mV at 1 mA cm-2 is obtained. Our work affords a practical method with strong operability to improve the intrinsic photoelectrochemical performance of photoanodes by efficient surface hydroxylation strategy.

Abstract:A Fe‐g‐C3N4/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode has been synthesized by both heterojunction engineering and doping, which extends the absorption range to longer wavelengths. Owing to the excellent oxygen evolution reaction activity of the NiCoOx layer and enhanced light absorption due to the two‐electrodes stack design, the photocurrent density of the as‐prepared photoanode achieves 6.33 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus RHE. BiVO4 is one of the most promising photoanode materials for photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar energy conversion, but it still suffers from poor photocurrent density due to insufficient light‐harvesting efficiency (LHE), weak photogenerated charge separation efficiency (ΦSep), and low water oxidation efficiency (ΦOX). Herein, we tackle these challenges of the BiVO4 photoanodes using systematic engineering, including catalysis engineering, bandgap engineering, and morphology engineering. In particular, we deposit a NiCoOx layer onto the BiVO4 photoanode as the oxygen evolution catalyst to enhance the ΦOX of Fe‐g‐C3N4/BiVO4 for PEC water oxidation, and incorporate Fe‐doped graphite‐phase C3N4 (Fe‐g‐C3N4) into the BiVO4 photoanode to optimize the bandgap and surface areas to subsequently expand the light absorption range of the photoanode from 530 to 690 nm, increase the LHE and ΦSep, and further improve the oxygen evolution reaction activity of the NiCoOx catalytic layer. Consequently, the maximum photocurrent density of the as‐prepared NiCoOx/Fe‐g‐C3N4/BiVO4 is remarkably boosted from 4.6 to 7.4 mA cm−2. This work suggests that the proposed systematic engineering strategy is exceptionally promising for improving LHE, ΦSep, and ΦOX of BiVO4‐based photoanodes, which will substantially benefit the design, preparation, and large‐scale application of next‐generation high‐performance photoanodes.
Boosting solar water oxidation activity of BiVO4 photoanode through an efficient in-situ selective surface cation exchange strategy

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics for water oxidation is recognized as one of the major problems for the unsatisfied photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Herein, we developed a feasible strategy based on in-situ selective surface cation exchange, for activating surface water oxidation reactivity toward boosted PEC water oxidation of BiVO4 photoanodes with fundamentally improved surface charge transfer. The as-constructed Co/BiVO4 photoanodes exhibit 2.6 times increase in photocurrent density with superior stability, in comparison to those of pristine counterpart. Moreover, the faradaic efficiency of as-fabricated photoanode can be up to ∼ 95% at 1.23 V (vs. RHE). The unique selective replacement of Bi by Co on the surface could modify the electronic structure of BiVO4 with reduced energy barrier of the deprotonation of OH* to O, thus favoring the overall excellent PEC performance of Co/BiVO4 photoanode.

Abstract:BiVO 4 has been attracting a lot of interest in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation due to its efficient solar absorption and appropriate band positions.So far,sluggish water oxidation kinetics and fast photogenerated charge recombination still hinder the PEC performance of BiVO 4 .In this study,a novel PEC photoanode was designed by depositing ultrathin FeOOH nanolayers on the surface of nanoporous BiVO 4 electrode,followed by modification with a cobaloxime (Co(dmgH) 2 (4-COOH-py)Cl) molecular cocatalyst.Under irradiation of a 100 mW cm -2 (AM 1.5G) Xe lamp,the photocurrent density of the cobaloxime/FeOOH/BiVO 4 composite photoanode reached 5.1 mA cm -2 at 1.23 V vs.RHE in 1.0 M potassium borate buffer solution (pH=9.0).The onset potential of the optimal cobaloxime/FeOOH/BiVO 4 photoanode exhibited a 460 m V cathodic shift relative to bare BiVO 4 .In addition,the surface charge injection efficiency of the composite photoanode reached～80%at 1.23 V vs.RHE and the incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) reached～88%at 420 nm.

Abstract:BiVO4 is a highly promising material for Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting photoanodes due to its narrow band gap value (~2.4 eV) and its ability to efficiently absorb visible light. However, the short hole migration distance, severe surface complexation, and low carrier separation efficiency limit its application. Therefore, in this paper, BiVO4 was modified by loading CoOOH cocatalyst on the rare earth element Nd-doped BiVO4 (Nd-BiVO4) photoanode. The physical characterization and electrochemical test results showed that Nd doping will cause lattice distortion of BiVO4 and introduce impurity energy levels to capture electrons to increase carrier concentration, thereby improving carrier separation efficiency. Further loading of surface CoOOH cocatalyst can accelerate charge separation and inhibit electron–hole recombination. Ultimately, the prepared target photoanode (CoOOH-Nd-BiVO4) exhibits an excellent photocurrent density (2.4 mAcm−2) at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode potential (vs. RHE), which is 2.67 times higher than that of pure BiVO4 (0.9 mA cm−2), and the onset potential is negatively shifted by 214 mV. The formation of the internal energy states of rare earth metal elements can reduce the photoexcited electron–hole pair recombination, so as to achieve efficient photochemical water decomposition ability. CoOOH is an efficient and suitable oxygen evolution cocatalyst (OEC), and OEC decoration of BiVO4 surface is of great significance for inhibiting surface charge recombination. This work provides a new strategy for achieving effective PEC water oxidation of BiVO4.
Crystal facet engineering of BiVO4/CQDs/TPP with improved charge transfer efficiency for photocatalytic water oxidation

Abstract:BiVO4 as an outstanding semiconductor material has been extensively employed in artificial photosynthesis, but it usually suffers drawbacks such as poor electron transportation and slow kinetics of oxygen evolution. Herein, we construct a novel ternary BiVO4/CQDs/TPP photocatalysts for photocatalytic water oxidation by controlling the preferential growth of BiVO4 (0 1 0) crystal surface after introducing TPP. The BiVO4/CQDs/TPP shows an enhancement of the water oxidation rate of 352.5 μmol g−1h−1 compared with the bare BiVO4 (113.7 μmol g-1h−1), which is due to the more efficient interfacial electron-hole transfer between TPP and BiVO4 via CQDs as an electron mediator as well as preferentially exposed (0 1 0) facets of BiVO4. The efficient photogenerated charge behavior is confirmed by the surface photovoltage and transient absorption spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculation reveals that water dissociation on the (0 1 0) facet surface is more energetically favorable for BiVO4/CQDs/TPP-60 than that of the pristine BiVO4. The present work affords deep understanding of the crystal morphology and facet engineering for BiVO4-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:BiVO4 has been regarded as a promising material for photoelectrochemical water splitting, but it suffers from a major challenge on charge collection and utilization. In order to meet this challenge, we design a nanoengineered three-dimensional (3D) ordered macro-mesoporous architecture (a kind of inverse opal) of Mo:BiVO4 through a controllable colloidal crystal template method with the help of a sandwich solution infiltration method and adjustable post-heating time. Within expectation, a superior photocurrent density is achieved in return for this design. This enhancement originates primarily from effective charge collection and utilization according to the analysis of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and so on. All the results highlight the great significance of the 3D ordered macro-mesoporous architecture as a promising photoelectrode model for the application in solar conversion. The cooperating amplification effects of nanoengineering from composition regulation and morphology innovation are helpful for creating more purpose-designed photoelectrodes with highly efficient performance.
