Unexpectedly Slow Yet Efficient Picosecond to Nanosecond Photoinduced Hole-Transfer Occurs in a Polymer/Nonfullerene Acceptor Organic Photovoltaic Blend

Abstract:We study photoinduced charge generation in a model polymer/nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) organic photovoltaic (OPV) blend. Specifically, we focus on hole-transfer kinetics from the photoexcited NFA thiophene-thieno [3,2-b]thiophene-thiophene-3-(dicyanomethylidene)-indan-1-one (4TIC) to the conjugated polymer donor poly[(4,4'-bis(2-butyloctoxycarbonyl-[2,2'-bithiophene]-5,5-diyl)-alt-(2,2'-bithiophene-5,5'-diyl)] (PDCBT) using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy by selectively exciting the 4TIC electron acceptor and monitoring the bleach of the PDCBT ground-state population. In the blend, the 4TIC excitons decay with an average lifetime of 7 ps, accompanied by a concomitant rise in the ground-state bleach of the polymer with a comparable average lifetime that is 60% complete by 8 ps and 95% complete by 100 ps, occurring roughly an order of magnitude slower than that in most previously reported polymer/NFA blends. Notably, the ground-state bleach of the polymer continues to grow, not reaching its maximum until similar to 1 ns. To explain this slow ground-state bleach rise, we propose that some 4TIC charge-transfer-like excitons are generated, which undergo hole transfer to the polymer on the 100 ps-1 ns time scale. Our findings provide new insight into the kinetics of hole transfer in nonfullerene OPV blends in the regime of small driving force and also support the proposal that nonfullerene acceptors may generate long-lived charge species upon direct photoexcitation.

Abstract:The charge separation yield at a bulk heterojunction sets the upper efficiency limit of an organic solar cell. Ultrafast charge transfer processes in polymer/fullerene blends have been intensively studied but much less is known about these processes in all-polymer systems. Here, we show that interfacial charge separation can occur through a polaron pair-derived hole transfer process in all-polymer photovoltaic blends, which is a fundamentally different mechanism compared to the exciton-dominated pathway in the polymer/fullerene blends. By utilizing ultrafast optical measurements, we have clearly identified an ultrafast hole transfer process with a lifetime of about 3 ps mediated by photo-excited polaron pairs which has a markedly high quantum efficiency of about 97%. Spectroscopic data show that excitons act as spectators during the efficient hole transfer process. Our findings suggest an alternative route to improve the efficiency of all-polymer solar devices by manipulating polaron pairs.

Abstract:In this study, a donor acceptor type molecule based on quinacridone (QA) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) was synthesized. Through the grafting of DPP-QA molecule on the surface of ZnO nanorod, hybrid nanoconnposite DPP-QA/ZnO was obtained. The fluorescence of DPP-QA was significantly quenched in the hybrid DPP-QA/ZnO nanocomposite. The properties of photoinduced electron transfer in the studied system were investigated by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in the visible region. It was found that the electron transfer (ET) time constant in the hybrid system is 1.0 x 109 s(-1) and the quantum yield for ET is 75%. It provides a model system to understand the role of inorganic semicon ductors in the organic/inorganic hybrid photoelectrical and photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:In recently developed non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) based organic solar cells (OSCs), both the donor and acceptor parts can be excited by absorbing light photons. Therefore, both electron transfer and hole transfer channels could occur at the donor/acceptor interface for generating free charge carriers in NFA based OSCs. However, in many molecular and DNA systems, recent studies revealed the high charge transfer (CT) efficiency cannot be reasonably explained by a CT model with only highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) of donor and acceptor molecules. In this work, taking an example of a full-polymer blend consisting of benzodithiophenealt-benzotriazole copolymers (J51) as donor and naphthalene diimide-bithiophene (N2200) as acceptor, in which the ultrafast hole transfer has been recently reported, we investigate its CT process and examine the different roles of various frontier molecular orbitals. Through a joint study of quantum mechanics electronic structure calculation and nonadiabatic dynamics simulation, we find the hole transfer between HOMOs of J51 and N2200 can hardly happen but the hole transfer from HOMO of N2200 to HOMO-1 of J51 is much more efficient. This points out the underlying importance of deep hole channel in CT process and indicates that including frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) other than HOMOs and LUMOs is highly necessary to build a robust physical model for studying CT process in molecular optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:Nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) have attracted great attention in high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs). While the effect of molecular properties including structures and energetics on charge transfer has been extensively investigated, the effect of macroscopic-phase properties is yet to be revealed. Here we have performed a correlation study of the nanoscale-phase morphology on the photoexcited hole transfer (HT) process and photovoltaic performance by combining ultrafast spectroscopy with high temporal resolution and photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) with high spatial and chemical resolution. In PM6/IT-4F, we observe biphasic HT behavior with a minor ultrafast (<100 fs) interfacial process and a major diffusion-mediated HT process until ∼100 ps, which depends strongly on phase segregation. Because of the interplay between charge transfer and transport, a compromised domain size of 20-30 nm for NFAs shows the best performance. This study highlights the critical role of phase morphology in high-efficiency OSCs.
Charge Generation Dynamics in Organic Photovoltaic Blends under One-Sun-Equivalent Illumination Detected by Highly Sensitive Terahertz Spectroscopy

Abstract:Organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices attain high performance with nonfullerene acceptors by utilizing the synergistic dual channels of charge generation that originate from excitations in both the donor and acceptor materials. However, the specific intermediate states that facilitate both channels are subject to debate. To address this issue, we employ time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy with improved sensitivity (ΔE/E < 10-6), enabling direct probing of charge generation dynamics in a prototypical PM6:Y6 bulk heterojunction system under one-sun-equivalent excitation density. Charge generation arising from donor excitations is characterized with a rise time of ∼9 ps, while that from acceptor excitations shows a rise time of ∼18 ps. Temperature-dependent measurements further reveal notably distinct activation energies for these two charge generation pathways. Additionally, the two channels of charge generation can be substantially manipulated by altering the ratio of bulk to interfaces. These findings strongly suggest the presence of two distinct intermediate states: interfacial and intramoiety excitations. These states are crucial in mediating the transfer of electrons and holes, driving charge generation within OPV devices.

Abstract:An experimental scrutiny of the photoexcited hole dynamics in a prototypical system is presented in which hole-scavenging methanol molecules are chemisorbed on a graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) substrate. A set of comparison and control experiments by means of femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy were conducted. The elusive reverse hole transfer (RHT) process was identified, which occurs on a timescale of a few hundred picoseconds. The critical role of interfacially chemisorbed methoxy (instead of methanol) as the dominant species responsible for hole scavenging was confirmed by a control experiment using protonated g-C3 N4 as the substrate. A hot-hole transfer effect was revealed by implementing different interband photoexcitation scenarios. The RHT rate is the key factor governing the hole-scavenging ability of different hole scavengers.

Abstract:When photoexcited, an organic photovoltaic (OPV) donor/acceptor (D/A) blend is expected to undergo charge separation (CS) through three channels: electron transfer, hole transfer, and energy transfer-induced electron/hole transfer. However, previous spectroscopic studies on various blends based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have not been able to directly characterize the dynamics of these processes, due to spectral overlap of the involved intermediate species. Herein, we study the excited-state dynamics of D/A blends composed of PBDB-T (D) and a L-series NFA (L4 or L5) and show that the species responsible for these processes in the PBDB-T/L4 blend can be spectroscopically identified, allowing us to disentangle their dynamics. Moreover, we confirm the occurrence of photoinduced CS in neat L4 and L5 films, providing direct evidence that CS can occur under nearly zero driving force in OPV systems. Further density functional theory calculations suggest that specific molecular packing patterns may play an important role in facilitating CS.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a promising light-harvesting module for artificial photosynthesis and photovoltaics. For efficient generation of free charge carriers, the donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugation has been adopted for two-dimensional (2D) COFs recently. In the 2D D-A COFs, photoexcitation would generate a polaron pair, which is a precursor to free charge carriers and has lower binding energy than an exciton. Although the character of the primary excitation species is a key factor in determining optoelectronic properties of a material, excited-state dynamics leading to the creation of a polaron pair have not been investigated yet. Here, we investigate the dynamics of photogenerated charge carriers in 2D D-A COFs by combining femtosecond optical spectroscopy and non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulation. From this investigation, we elucidate that the polaron pair is formed through ultrafast intra-layer hole transfer coupled with coherent vibrations of the 2D lattice, suggesting a mechanism of phonon-assisted charge transfer.

Abstract:Understanding organic photovoltaic (OPV) work principles and the materials’ optoelectronic properties is fundamental for developing novel heterojunction materials with the aim of improving power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells. Here, in order to understand the PCE performance (>13%) of OPV device composed of the non-fullerene acceptor fusing naphtho[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene with two thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (IDCIC) and the polymer donor fluorobenzotriazole (FTAZ), with the aid of extensive quantum chemistry calculations, we investigated the geometries, molecular orbitals, excitations, electrostatic potentials, transferred charges and charge transfer distances of FTAZ, IDCIC and their complexes with face-on configurations, which was constructed as heterojunction interface model. The results indicate that, the prominent OPV performance of FTAZ:IDCIC heterojunction is caused by co-planarity between the donor and acceptor fragments in IDCIC, the the charge transfer (CT) and hybrid excitations of FTAZ and IDCIC, the complementary optical absorptions in visible region, and the large electrostatic potential difference between FTAZ and IDCIC. The electronic structures and excitations of FTAZ/IDCIC complexes suggest that exciton dissociation can fulfill through the decay of local excitation exciton in acceptor by means of hole transfer, which is quite different from the OPVs based on fullerenes acceptor. The rates of exciton dissociation, charge recombination and CT processes, which were evaluated by Marcus theory, support the efficient exciton dissociation that is also responsible for good photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Understanding the evolution of molecular electronic structures is the key to explore and control photochemical reactions and photobiological processes.Subjected to strong laser fields,electronic holes are formed upon ionization and evolve in the attosecond timescale.It is crucial to probe the electronic dynamics in real time with attosecond-temporal and atomic-spatial precision.Here,we present molecular attosecond interferometry that enables the in situ manipulation of holes in carbon dioxide molecules via the interferometry of the phase-locked electrons (propagating in opposite directions) of a laser-triggered rotational wave packet.The joint measurement on high-harmonic and terahertz spectroscopy (HATS) provides a unique tool for understanding electron dynamics from picoseconds to attoseconds.The optimum phases of two-color pulses for controlling the electron wave packet are precisely determined owing to the robust reference provided with the terahertz pulse generation.It is noteworthy that the contribution of HOMO-1 and HOMO-2 increases reflecting the deformation of the hole as the harmonic order increases.Our method can be applied to study hole dynamics of complex molecules and electron correlations during the strong-field process.The threefold control through molecular alignment,laser polarization,and the two-color pulse phase delay allows the precise manipulation of the transient hole paving the way for new advances in attochemistry.
Phonon-induced Nonadiabatic and Adiabatic Mechanisms Synergistically Driving Ultrafast Interlayer Transfer of Photogenerated Charges in Heterostructures of G-C3n4 with MoTe2 and WTe2

Abstract:Phonon vibration excitation is an effective approach to enhance photoelectric conversion efficiency of g-C3N4based heterostructures, yet the influencing mechanism on interlayer transfer of photogenerated charges remains unclear. Herein, we show first-principles evidence of using g-C3N4/ transition metal dichalcogenide (MoTe2 and WTe2) heterostructures to achieve ultrafast interlayer transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes at the timescales of 4 ps and 200 fs, respectively. Our findings reveal that the fast transfers of photogenerated electrons and holes are both promoted by a nonadiabatic (NA) mechanism, driven via the coupling of donor and acceptor electronic states with the same phonon state. Notably, this coupling in the valence bands is significantly stronger than that in the conduction bands, which enhances interface atom motion, reduces interface distance, and strengthens wave-function overlap of spatial localized electronic states, thereby synergistically producing much faster hole transfer. Moreover, the hole transfer is also enhanced by an adiabatic (AD) mechanism through phonon-induced crossing of valence bands. Our study identifies that the synergistic effects of phonon-induced NA and AD mechanisms play a key role in interlayer transfer of photogenerated charges within g-C3N4-based heterostructures.

Abstract:<p>DPP-based conjugated polymers exhibit a broad optical absorption and high motilities for hole and electron, all of which will be advantageous to high photocurrents and good fill factors in OPV. However, their power conversion efficiency (PCE) still lag behind other polymer donor materials. In order to understand the reason hindering the PCE improvement, it is especially important to reveal the underlying electronic processes in Donor-Acceptor blending active layer. Through optical pump terahertz probe investigation, we found that the combination of fast exciton separation and long carrier lifetime will convenient to optic-electricity conversion efficiency. Although high charge mobility lead to long carrier lifetime, the difficulty of exciton separation in narrow band gap polymer DPPDTT is a key factor affecting device efficiency.</p>

Ultrafast Electron Transfer in Low‐Band Gap Polymer/PbS Nanocrystalline Blend Films

Abstract:Ultrafast charge transfer dynamics in hybrid blend films of a low band‐gap polymer poly(2,6‐(N‐(1‐octylnonyl)dithieno[3,2‐b:20,30‐d]pyrrole)‐alt‐4,7‐(2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole)) (PDBT) and PbS quantum dots (QDs) are studied by using ultrafast transient transmission spectroscopy. It is observed that the transient bleaching signal arising from excitons of the PDBT displays a much faster recovery, within the time delay of ≈5 ps, in hybrid films than in the neat PDBT film. In contrast, the bleaching signal resulting from the electron filling of the QDs in hybrid films shows an extra rising component during ≈1–5 ps, which is absent in the pristine QDs. These results indicate the ultrafast electron transfer from the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level of the PDBT to the conduction band of the QDs in the time scale of several ps after laser excitation. A transient absorption signal within 1 ps in the hybrid films is also found, indicating the emergence of charge transfer states (CTs). The CTs formed at the interface of the hybrid blend may facilitate the charge separation and transfer. It is estimated that over 80% of the photoexcited electrons in the PDBT may be transferred into the QDs. The transfer efficiencies show a positive correlation with the power conversion efficiencies of the corresponding hybrid solar cells.
Achieving Ultrafast Hole Transfer at the Monolayer MoS2 and CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Interface by Defect Engineering.

Abstract:The performance of a photovoltaic device is strongly dependent on the light harvesting properties of the absorber layer as well as the charge separation at the donor/acceptor interfaces. Atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2-D TMDCs) exhibit strong light-matter interaction, large optical conductivity, and high electron mobility; thus they can be highly promising materials for next-generation ultrathin solar cells and optoelectronics. However, the short optical absorption path inherent in such atomically thin layers limits practical applications. A heterostructure geometry comprising 2-D TMDCs (e.g., MoS2) and a strongly absorbing material with long electron-hole diffusion lengths such as methylammonium lead halide perovskites (CH3NH3PbI3) may overcome this constraint to some extent, provided the charge transfer at the heterostructure interface is not hampered by their band offsets. Herein, we demonstrate that the intrinsic band offset at the CH3NH3PbI3/MoS2 interface can be overcome by creating sulfur vacancies in MoS2 using a mild plasma treatment; ultrafast hole transfer from CH3NH3PbI3 to MoS2 occurs within 320 fs with 83% efficiency following photoexcitation. Importantly, our work highlights the feasibility of applying defect-engineered 2-D TMDCs as charge-extraction layers in perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) based on a donor (D) polymer and an acceptor (A) fullerene derivative is a promising organic photovoltaics (OPV). In order to improve the incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) of the BHJ solar cell, a comprehensive understanding of the ultrafast dynamics of excited species, such as singlet exciton (D*), interfacial charge-transfer (CT) state, and carrier (D+), is indispensable. Here, we performed femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy of two prototypical BHJ blend films: poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)/[6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blend film and poly(9,9′-dioctylfluorene-co-bithiophene) (F8T2)/[6,6]-phenyl C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM) blend film. We decomposed differential absorption spectra into fast, slow, and constant components via two-exponential fitting at respective probe photon energies. The decomposition procedure clearly distinguished photoinduced absorptions (PIAs) due to D*, CT, and D+. Based on these assignments, we will compare the charge dynamics between the F8T2/PC70BM and P3HT/PCBM blend films.
Ultrafast Hole Transfer Dynamics in InP/ZnSe/ZnS Core/Shell/Shell Quantum Dots

Abstract:The fast hole transfer process is important for the application of quantum dots (QDs) in photoelectric conversion systems. In this paper, the hole transfer process from the core to the surface in InP/ZnS QDs and InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs was comparatively studied by ultrafast spectroscopy and time-resolved photoluminescence technology. The results show that InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs have a faster hole transfer rate when the thickness of the ZnSe midshell is about 2.2 nm. This is because the ZnSe midshell increases the density of higher-energy hole states located above the valence band edge, so that a larger proportion of photoexcited holes in InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs can be distributed in these higher-energy states compared with the holes in InP/ZnS QDs. The hole transfer in these higher-energy states is easier than that in band-edge states due to the lower tunneling barrier height. This work complements the understanding of the charge-transfer process in InP-based QDs, suggesting that InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs have a stronger application potential in photoelectric conversion systems than InP/ZnS QDs.
Hole Transfer Promoted by a Viscosity Additive in an All-Polymer Photovoltaic Blend.

Abstract:Viscosity modifiers are widely applied to improve the mechanical compliance of organic optoelectronic devices. However, the effect of the viscosity additives on the charge dynamics remains poorly understood. Here, we report the observation of markedly different effects of a high-viscosity polymeric additive on the electron- and hole-transfer dynamics in all-polymer organic photovoltaic blends. By using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, we determine that hole transfer from charge-transfer excitations in the acceptor is markedly promoted while the electron transfer from local excitations in the donor remains nearly unchanged upon introduction of viscosity additives into the blends. We argue that the modification of dielectric screening is the mechanism underlying the effect of the additive on the charge dynamics. This finding suggests a new strategy for designing high-performance flexible organic photovoltaic devices by manipulating the dielectric environment.

Abstract:Two-polymers, phenothiazine derivatives (PQ) and poly 2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene (MEH-PPV), who show complementary absorption to the solar spectrum are blended for broader absorption. The energy transfer from PQ to MEH-PPV is designed and observed at ultrafast time scale of ∼2ps. Föster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process is regarded as the mechanism. Band gap of PQ is determined as 2.5eV. With this design, a ladder type energy transfer and collection is suggested.
