Abstract:Ultrasensitive measurement of a small displacement is an essential goal in various applications of science and technology, ranging from large-scale laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors to micro-electro-mechanical-systems-based force microscopy. The least measurable displacement is ultimately limited by the quantum nature of light in a classical optical sensor. Here we use the bright quantum correlated light, i.e., twin beams, generated by a coherent atomic medium to surpass the shot-noise limit (SNL) of the displacement measurement of a membrane in an optical cavity. The sensitivity of 200 $am/\sqrt {Hz}$ is achieved, which is more than two orders of magnitude better than a standard Michelson interferometer. An improvement of 3 $dB$ in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) beyond the SNL is realized at an equivalent optical power, by using quantum correlated light with noise squeezed 7 $dB$ below the vacuum level. Moreover, the frequency correlation of twin beams is directly measured by using optical cavities, and this relation is utilized to reduce the excess classical noise. Additionally, the displacement measurement sensitivity is further substantially enhanced by the cavity mediated dispersion and the SNR is increased by one order of magnitude compared to the free space case. These results provide a novel strategy for the world of precision measurement as well as to control cavity optomechanical systems with non-classical light.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanics originates from the research of interferometric detection of gravitational waves, and later it has become a fast-growing area of techniques and approaches ranging from the fields of atomic, molecular, and optical physics to nano-science and condensed matter physics as well. Recently, it focused on the exploration of operating mechanical oscillators deep in the quantum regime, with an interest ranging from quantum-classical interface tests to high-precision quantum metrology. In this paper, recent theoretical work of our group in the field of quantum measurement with cavity optomechanical systems is reviewed. We explore the quantum measurement theory and its applications with several unconventional cavity optomechanical schemes working in the quantum regime. This review covers the basics of quantum noises in the cavity optomechanical setups and the resulting standard quantum limit of precision displacement and force measurement. Three novel quantum measurement proposals based on the hybrid optomechanical system are introduced. First, we describe a quantum back-action insulated weak force sensor. It is realized by forming a quantum-mechanics-free subsystem with two optomechanical oscillators of reversed effective mass. Then we introduce a role-reversed atomic optomechanical system which enables the preparation and the quantum tomography of a variety of non-classical states of atoms. In this system, the cavity field acts as a mechanical oscillator driven by the radiation pressure force from an ultracold atomic field. In the end, we recommend a multimode optomechanical transducer that can detect intensities significantly below the single-photon level via adiabatic transfer of the microwave signal to the optical frequency domain. These proposals demonstrate the possible applications of optomechanical devices in understanding of quantum-classical crossover and in achieving quantum measurement limit.
Room-temperature quantum optomechanics using an ultralow noise cavity

Abstract:At room temperature, mechanical motion driven by the quantum backaction of light has been observed only in pioneering experiments in which an optical restoring force controls the oscillator stiffness 1,2 . For solid-state mechanical resonators in which oscillations are controlled by the material rigidity, the observation of these effects has been hindered by low mechanical quality factors, optical cavity frequency fluctuations 3 , thermal intermodulation noise 4,5 and photothermal instabilities. Here we overcome these challenges with a phononic-engineered membrane-in-the-middle system. By using phononic-crystal-patterned cavity mirrors, we reduce the cavity frequency noise by more than 700-fold. In this ultralow noise cavity, we insert a membrane resonator with high thermal conductance and a quality factor ( Q ) of 180 million, engineered using recently developed soft-clamping techniques 6,7 . These advances enable the operation of the system within a factor of 2.5 of the Heisenberg limit for displacement sensing 8 , leading to the squeezing of the probe laser by 1.09(1) dB below the vacuum fluctuations. Moreover, the long thermal decoherence time of the membrane oscillator (30 vibrational periods) enables us to prepare conditional displaced thermal states of motion with an occupation of 0.97(2) phonons using a multimode Kalman filter. Our work extends the quantum control of solid-state macroscopic oscillators to room temperature.

Abstract:The fields of optomechanics and electromechanics have facilitated numerous advances in the areas of precision measurement and sensing, ultimately driving the studies of mechanical systems into the quantum regime. To date, however, the quantization of the mechanical motion and the associated quantum jumps between phonon states remains elusive. For optomechanical systems, the coupling to the environment was shown to make the detection of the mechanical mode occupation difficult, typically requiring the single-photon strong-coupling regime. Here, we propose and analyse an electromechanical setup, which allows us to overcome this limitation and resolve the energy levels of a mechanical oscillator. We found that the heating of the membrane, caused by the interaction with the environment and unwanted couplings, can be suppressed for carefully designed electromechanical systems. The results suggest that phonon number measurement is within reach for modern electromechanical setups.

Abstract:Ponderomotive squeezing of light, where a mechanical oscillator creates quantum correlations between the phase and amplitude of the interacting light field, is a canonical signature of the quantum regime of optomechanics. At room temperature, this has only been reached in pioneering experiments where an optical restoring force controls the oscillator stiffness, akin to the vibrational motion of atoms in an optical lattice. These include both levitated nanoparticles and optically-trapped cantilevers. Recent advances in engineered mechanical resonators, where the restoring force is provided by material rigidity rather than an external optical potential, have realized ultra-high quality factors (Q) by exploiting `soft clamping'. However entering the quantum regime with such resonators, has so far been prevented by optical cavity frequency fluctuations and thermal intermodulation noise. Here, we overcome this challenge and demonstrate optomechanical squeezing at room temperature in a phononic-engineered membrane-in-the-middle system. By using a high finesse cavity whose mirrors are patterned with phononic crystal structures, we reduce cavity frequency noise by more than 700-fold. In this ultra-low noise cavity, we introduce a silicon nitride membrane oscillator whose density is modulated by silicon nano-pillars, yielding both high thermal conductance and a localized mechanical mode with Q of 1.8e8. These advances enable operation within a factor of 2.5 of the Heisenberg limit, leading to squeezing of the probing field by 1.09 dB below the vacuum fluctuations. Moreover, the long thermal decoherence time of the membrane oscillator (more than 30 vibrational periods) allows us to obtain conditional displaced thermal states of motion with an occupation of 0.97 phonon, using a multimode Kalman filter. Our work extends quantum control of engineered macroscopic oscillators to room temperature.

Abstract:Controlling a quantum system by using observations of its dynamics is complicated by the backaction of the measurement process—that is, the unavoidable quantum disturbance caused by coupling the system to a measurement apparatus. An efficient measurement is one that maximizes the amount of information gained per disturbance incurred. Real-time feedback can then be used to cancel the backaction of the measurement and to control the evolution of the quantum state. Such measurement-based quantum control has been demonstrated in the clean settings of cavity and circuit quantum electrodynamics, but its application to motional degrees of freedom has remained elusive. Here we demonstrate measurement-based quantum control of the motion of a millimetre-sized membrane resonator. An optomechanical transducer resolves the zero-point motion of the resonator in a fraction of its millisecond-scale coherence time, with an overall measurement efficiency close to unity. An electronic feedback loop converts this position record to a force that cools the resonator mode to its quantum ground state (residual thermal occupation of about 0.29). This occupation is nine decibels below the quantum-backaction limit of sideband cooling and six orders of magnitude below the equilibrium occupation of the thermal environment. We thus realize a long-standing goal in the field, adding position and momentum to the degrees of freedom that are amenable to measurement-based quantum control, with potential applications in quantum information processing and gravitational-wave detectors.

Revealing hidden quantum correlations in an electromechanical measurement

Abstract:Under a strong quantum measurement, the motion of an oscillator is disturbed by the measurement back-action, as required by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. When a mechanical oscillator is continuously monitored via an electromagnetic cavity, as in a cavity optomechanical measurement, the back-action is manifest by the shot noise of incoming photons that becomes imprinted onto the motion of the oscillator. Following the photons leaving the cavity, the correlations appear as squeezing of quantum noise in the emitted field. Here we observe such "ponderomotive" squeezing in the microwave domain using an electromechanical device made out of a superconducting resonator and a drumhead mechanical oscillator. Under a strong measurement, the emitted field develops complex-valued quantum correlations, which in general are not completely accessible by standard homodyne measurements. We recover these hidden correlations, using a phase-sensitive measurement scheme employing two local oscillators. The utilization of hidden correlations presents a step forward in the detection of weak forces, as it allows to fully utilize the quantum noise reduction under the conditions of strong force sensitivity.

Abstract:While quantum mechanics exquisitely describes the behavior of microscopic systems, one ongoing challenge is to explore its applicability to systems of larger size and mass. Unfortunately, quantum states of increasingly macroscopic objects are more easily corrupted by unintentional measurements from the classical environment. Additionally, even the intentional measurements from the observer can further perturb the system. In optomechanics, coherent light fields serve as the intermediary between the fragile mechanical states and our inherently classical world by exerting radiation pressure forces and extracting mechanical information. Here we engineer a microwave cavity optomechanical system to stabilize a nonclassical steady-state of motion while independently, continuously, and nondestructively monitoring it. By coupling the motion of an aluminum membrane to two microwave cavities, we separately prepare and measure a squeezed state of motion. We demonstrate a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of sub-vacuum mechanical quadrature fluctuations. The techniques developed here have direct applications in the areas of quantum-enhanced sensing and quantum information processing, and could be further extended to more complex quantum states.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanical (COM) sensors, featuring efficient light–motion couplings, have been widely used for ultrasensitive measurements of various physical quantities ranging from displacements to accelerations or weak forces. Previous works, however, have mainly focused on reciprocal COM systems. Here, we propose how to further improve the performance of quantum COM sensors by breaking reciprocal symmetry in purely quantum regime. Specifically, we consider a spinning COM resonator and show that by selectively driving it in opposite directions, highly nonreciprocal optical squeezing can emerge, which in turn provides an efficient way to surpass the standard quantum limit which is otherwise unattainable for the corresponding reciprocal devices. Our work confirms that breaking reciprocal symmetry, already achieved in diverse systems well beyond spinning systems, can serve as a new strategy to further enhance the abilities of advanced quantum sensors, for applications ranging from testing fundamental physical laws to practical quantum metrology.

Abstract:We analyze quantum effects occurring in optomechanical systems where the coupling between an optical mode and a mechanical mode is quadratic in displacement (membrane-in-the-middle geometry). We show that it is possible to observe quantum effects in these systems without achieving the single-photon strong coupling regime. We find that zero-point energy causes a mechanical frequency shift, and we propose an experimental way to measure it. Further, we show that it is possible to determine the phonon statistics from the cavity transmission, and propose a way to infer the resonator's temperature based on this feature. For completeness, we revisit the case of an isolated system and show that different types of mechanical quantum states can be created, depending on the initial cavity state. In this situation, mechanical motion undergoes collapse and revivals, and we compute the collapse and revival times, as well as the degree of squeezing.

Abstract:We use a reservoir engineering technique based on two-tone driving to generate and stabilize a quantum squeezed state of a micron-scale mechanical oscillator in a microwave optomechanical system. Using an independent backaction-evading measurement to directly quantify the squeezing, we observe 4.7±0.9 dB of squeezing below the zero-point level surpassing the 3 dB limit of standard parametric squeezing techniques. Our measurements also reveal evidence for an additional mechanical parametric effect. The interplay between this effect and the optomechanical interaction enhances the amount of squeezing obtained in the experiment.

Abstract:Accessing distinctly quantum aspects of the interaction between light and the position of a mechanical object has been an outstanding challenge to cavity-optomechanical systems. Only cold-atom implementations of cavity optomechanics have indicated effects of the quantum fluctuations in the optical radiation pressure force. Here we use such a system, in which quantum photon-number fluctuations significantly drive the center of mass of an atomic ensemble inside a Fabry-Perot cavity. We show that the optomechanical response both amplifies and ponderomotively squeezes the quantum light field. We also demonstrate that classical optical fluctuations can be attenuated by 26 dB or amplified by 20 dB with a weak input pump power of < 40 pW, and characterize the optomechanical amplifier's frequency-dependent gain and phase response in both the amplitude and phase-modulation quadratures.

Measuring nanomechanical motion with a microwave cavity interferometer

Abstract:In recent years microfabricated microwave cavities have been extremely successful in a wide variety of detector applications. In this article we focus this technology on the challenge of quantum-limited displacement detection of a macroscopic object. We measure the displacement of a nanomechanical beam by capacitively coupling its position to the resonant frequency of a superconducting transmission-line microwave cavity. With our device we realize near state-of-the-art mechanical force sensitivity (3 $\rm{aN/\sqrt{Hz}}$) and thus add to only a handful of techniques able to measure thermomechanical motion at 10's of milliKelvin temperatures. Our measurement imprecision reaches a promising 30 times the expected imprecision at the standard quantum limit, and we quantify our ability to extract measurement backaction from our results as well as elucidate the important steps that will be required to progress towards the full quantum limit with this new detector.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanical systems provide excellent platforms for the high-precision measurement of various physical quantities. Here, we investigate the improvement of optomechanical precision measurements based on the tuning of the optomechanical interaction, which can surpass the quantum shot-noise limit without using a squeezed light source. The enhanced performance comes from the optomechanical two-mode squeezing interaction. The approach is based on the tuning of the mechanical susceptibility using optical force, which can be adjusted by controlling the laser frequency and power. For proper blue-detuned laser driving, the mechanical response to the detected signal is greatly enhanced, with improved measurement sensitivity surpassing the shot-noise limit. Moreover, for proper red-detuned laser driving, the working bandwidth can be broadened when the quantum shot noise does not dominate. Our work opens an avenue towards significant improvement to all kinds of optomechanical precision-measurement systems without stringent requirements.
Squeezed-light interferometry on a cryogenically-cooled micro-mechanical membrane

Abstract:Squeezed states of light reduce the signal-normalized photon counting noise of measurements without increasing the light power and enable fundamental research on quantum entanglement in hybrid systems of light and matter. Furthermore, the completion of squeezed states with cryo-cooling has high potential. First, measurement sensitivities are usually limited by quantum noise and thermal noise. Second, squeezed states allow for reducing the heat load on cooled devices without losing measurement precision. Here, we demonstrate squeezed-light position sensing of a cryo-cooled micro-mechanical membrane. The sensing precision is improved by up to 4.8 dB below photon counting noise, limited by optical loss in two Faraday rotators, at a membrane temperature of about 20K, limited by our cryo-cooler. We prove that realising a high interference contrast in a cryogenic Michelson interferometer is feasible. Our setup is the first conceptual demonstration towards the envisioned European gravitational-wave detector, the 'Einstein Telescope', which is planned to use squeezed states of light together with cryo-cooling of its mirror test masses.

Abstract:We study the quantum dynamics of the cavity optomechanical system formed by a Fabry-Perot cavity with a thin vibrating membrane at its center. We first derive the general multimode Hamiltonian describing the radiation pressure interaction between the cavity modes and the vibrational modes of the membrane. We then restrict the analysis to the standard case of a single cavity mode interacting with a single mechanical resonator and we determine to what extent optical absorption by the membrane hinder reaching a quantum regime for the cavity-membrane system. We show that membrane absorption does not pose serious limitations and that one can simultaneously achieve ground state cooling of a vibrational mode of the membrane and stationary optomechanical entanglement with state-of-the-art apparatuses.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanical (COM) sensors, enhanced by quantum squeezing or entanglement, have become powerful tools for measuring ultra-weak forces with high precision and sensitivity. However, these sensors usually rely on linear COM couplings, a fundamental limitation when measurements of the mechanical energy are desired. Very recently, a giant enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio was predicted in a quadratic COM system. Here we show that the performance of such a system can be further improved surpassing the standard quantum limit by using quantum squeezed light. Our approach is compatible with available engineering techniques of advanced COM sensors and provides new opportunities for using COM sensors in tests of fundamental laws of physics and quantum metrology applications.

A Test of Empty Wave via Quantum Memory in a Weak Measurement Scheme

Abstract:In quantum mechanics, a long-standing question remains: How does a single photon traverse double slits? One intuitive picture suggests that the photon passes through only one slit, while its wavefunction splits into an ``empty" wave and a ``full" wave. However, the reality of this empty wave is yet to be verified. Here, we present a novel experimental configuration that combines quantum memory and weak measurement to investigate the nature of the empty wave. A single atomic excitation is probabilistically split between free space and a quantum memory, analogous to the two paths in a double-slit experiment. The quantum memory serves as a path detector, where single-photon Raman scattering is enhanced due to the presence of a stored spin wave, without collapsing the quantum state. This enhancement is recorded as classical information, and the spin wave stored in the quantum memory is retrieved twice, with an interference visibility of 79%. Unlike conventional weak measurement schemes, where weak values are detected during post-selection, our approach converts the weak value into classical information before interference takes place. Our results demonstrate the potential of quantum memory as a measurement device that preserves coherence while extracting partial information, offering new insights into quantum measurement.

Simultaneous ponderomotive squeezing of light by two mechanical modes in an optomechanical system

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a source of squeezed light featuring simultaneous ponderomotive squeezing from two mechanical modes of an optomechanical system. We use ultra-coherent vibrational modes ($Q$ factors on the order of $10^{8}$) of a soft-clamped membrane placed in a Fabry-Pérot optical cavity at cryogenic conditions ($T=11\,\mathrm{K}$) and driven by quantum fluctuations in the intensity of light to create correlations between amplitude and phase quadratures of the intra-cavity light field. Continuous optical monitoring was conducted on two different mechanical modes with a frequency separation of around $1\,\mathrm{MHz}$. As a result of the interaction between the membrane position and the light, we generated ponderomotive squeezing of $4.8\,\mathrm{dB}$ for the first localized mechanical mode at $1.32\,\mathrm{MHz}$ and $4.2\,\mathrm{dB}$ for the second localized mode at $2.43\,\mathrm{MHz}$, as observed in direct detection when correcting for the detection inefficiency. Thus, we have demonstrated how squeezed light generation can be extended beyond a single octave in an optomechanical system by leveraging more than one mechanical mode. Utilizing homodyne detection to detect squeezing in an optimal quadrature would lead to squeezing levels at the output of the cavity of $7.3\,\mathrm{dB}$ and $6.8\,\mathrm{dB}$, in the two modes respectively. Squeezing of light demonstrated here for near-infrared light can be achieved in a broad range of wavelengths due to the relative insensitivity of optomechanical interaction with SiN membranes to the wavelength.
