Abstract:Flexible fabric formworks and bespoke Wound Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (W-FRP) cages have been proposed to address the difficulties of constructing geometrically optimised concrete structures with minimised material consumptions. However, the existing codes of practice for FRP reinforced concrete structures are not able to provide accurate shear behaviour predictions, resulting in potential premature anchorage failure. This paper presents a revised shear design approach for non-prismatic beams reinforced with W-FRP based on the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT), which considers the non-prismatic geometries, geometrical nonlinearity and internal load redistributions. The revised shear design approach is calibrated against previous fabric-formed T beam tests and parametric analyses are conducted to minimise the material usage of the previous T-beams. The validity of the shear design approach is further confirmed with a new T-beam test. The new test shows that the T beam designed with the MCFT based approach failed in the expected flexural failure mode with an ultimate capacity of 245 kN applied load. The predictions can effectively model the bar force development of the inclined flexural reinforcement with a Normalised Root Mean Square Error (NRSME) of 4.4%. The proposed shear design method improved the prediction accuracy of flexural bar force at ultimate capacity by 40% compared to the codified shear design method. By addressing the shear contributions of inclined flexural reinforcement and required anchorage strength, further applications of this novel flexibly formed beams with optimised geometries are expected to achieve material consumption reduction and hence lower carbon emissions from concrete structures.

Abstract:In order to improve the constructability and meanwhile ensure excellent seismic behavior, several innovative composite connection details were conceived and studied by the authors. This paper reports experimental results and observations on seismic behavior of steel beam bolted to reinforced concrete column connections (bolted RCS or BRCS). The proposed composite connection details involve post tensioning the end plates of the steel beams to the reinforced concrete or precast concrete columns using high-strength steel rods. A rational design procedure was proposed to assure a ductile behavior of the composite structure. Strut-and-tie model analysis indicates that a bolted composite connection has a favorable stress transfer mechanism. The excellent capacity and behavior were then validated through five full-scale beam to column connection model tests.

Abstract:In order to further study the anti-impact behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthend with externally bonded FRP sheets,a RC beam without stirrups and two FRP-strengthened RC beams without stirrups were tested under impact loads and a FRP-strengthened beam was tested under static loads.Test results showed that the antiimpact capacity of FRP-strengthened RC beams significantly increases,especially,when they are strengthened with end anchoraged.Time-histories of impact force,mid-span displacement and strain of longitudinal reinforcement were analyzed,combined with failure modes of specimens,the anti-shear failure mechanism of CFRP-strengthened RC beams without stirrups under impact loading was obtained.It was shown that the failure process is divided into two stages including the shear failure of local part of the beams' mid-span under impact loading,and the subsequent shear failure of the impacted point directing to bearings.The FRP contributions to the beams' shear force-bearings in the two stages were discussed under impact loadin.g,respectively and compared with the theoretical shear force-bearings gained with different design codes.The comparison showed that the FRP-strengthened RC beams' dynamic shear force-bearings under impact loading in both stages are higher than the theoretical values and their shear force-bearings under static loads.Compared with the previous methods to estimate the shear force-bearings of CFRP-to-concrete interfaces under impact loading,the test results provided a reference for reasonably evaluating FRP contributions to FRP-strengthened RC beams' shear strength.

Abstract:The external bonding of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) to reinforced concrete members has become a popular method of retrofitting/strengthening concrete structures in recent years. This technology allows the high tensile strength of FRP to be transmitted to the concrete structure through surface adhesion. Surface adhesion that relies on the tensile strength of concrete is known to be weak and unreliable. It results in a poor degree of bonding between the FRP and the concrete members and often induces premature debonding at the bond interface. Such premature debonding has greatly reduced the usage rate of the FRP material's tensile capacity. One feasible, and probably the only fundamental, solution to this problem is to ensure that the FRP "takes root" in the concrete substrate. The authors have accordingly developed a new technology-hybrid bonded FRP (HB-FRP)-that combines adhesive bonding with a new means of mechanical fastening. A pilot test demonstrated that the bond strength of this new technology was 7.5 times that of a conventional adhesive bond, thus successfully resolving the problem of intermediate crack-induced debonding (IC-debonding) for which "no efficient method is available yet to avoid ... " This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the quantification of the ultimate bond strength of HB-FRP retrofitted concrete beams, from which a theoretical model is developed for the design of their members.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams shear-strengthened with externally bonded carbon fiber-rein forced polymer (CFRP) wraps under low-velocity impact loading was experimentally investigated. Twelve simply supported RC beam specimens classified into two groups according to stirrup ratios of 0 and 0.1% were tested using an instrumented drop-weight impact machine. The main variable was the center-to-center spacing of the CFRP wraps, which was retrofit at three levels from light, to critical, and to heavy strengthening. The dynamic responses of all the specimens are monied and discussed in detail. Effects of the CFRP strip spacing and shear span-depth ratio on dynamic response of beam specimens are analyzed.

Abstract:Compared to traditional shear keys, bolted shear connections adopted in steel-concrete composite beams or bridges provide the advantages of improved construction efficiency and rapid replacement of the deteriorated elements. However, current investigations on the shear performance of bolted shear connectors are quite limited. This paper explores the mechanical behavior of the advanced bolted shear connections embedded in steel and concrete composite beams. A total of 10 push-off test specimens were fabricated and carried out to determine the bolt diameter and the bolt pretension on the failure models, shear strength, initial slip load, shear stiffness, and peak slip of this advanced bolted shear connection. The experimental results demonstrate that bolt sheared off is the primary failure mode in all specimens with a small amount of concrete crushing underneath the bolts. Bolt pretension displays a negligible effect on the shear keys' failure models and the shear capacity, while the concrete spalling area increases as the bolt diameter improves. The initial slip load and the shear stiffness of the advanced bolted shear connections grow as the bolt pretension and bolt diameter increase. Based upon the existing formulae, some design recommendations are proposed for predicting this advanced bolted shear connection.

Abstract:To investigate the static properties of large high strength bolt shear connector in hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete (HFRC) and normal concrete (NC), eight push-out test specimens with single/double nut and HFRC/NC slabs were designed and push-out tests were conducted. A fine 3D nonlinear finite element (FE) model including HFRC constitutive model was established by using ANSYS 18.0, and the test results were used to verify FE models of the push-out test specimens. Then a total of 13 FE models were analyzed with various parameters including fiber volume fractions of HFRC, bolt diameter and thickness of steel flange. Finally, the empirical equations considering the contribution of polypropylene fiber (PF) and steel fiber (SF) obtained from the regression of the test results and FE analysis were recommended to evaluate the load-slip curve and ultimate capacity of the large high strength bolt shear connector embedded in HFRC/NC.

Abstract:In this paper, analytical models for concrete cover separation (CCS) of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams with multiple steel bolts were developed based on concrete tooth model for strengthened RC beams without anchors. The derivation of the models involved three major steps: (a) determination of the crack spacing (width of the concrete teeth); (b) determination of the pull‐out strength of steel bolt considering the effect of shear crack; and (c) determination of the peak load of FRP strengthened beams when CCS occurs based on the concrete tooth model. Validation test on five RC beams was conducted to investigate the effect of anchorage systems on the premature debonding of FRP strengthened RC beams. Results showed that steel bolts with enough embedding length can effectively suppress the initiation and propagation of CCS, thus improve the performance of FRP strengthened RC beams. Moreover, a database of FRP strengthened RC beams with mechanical fasteners (MFs) and failed in CCS or FRP fracture (FR) was assembled from the literature. The analytical predictions agreed well with the experimental results.

Abstract:The high-strength bolt shear connector in prefabricated concrete slab has advantages in applications as it reduces time during the construction of steel-concrete composite building structures and bridges. In this research, an innovative and advanced bolt shear connector in steel-concrete composite structures is proposed. To investigate the fundamental mechanical behavior and the damage form, 22 static push-off tests were conducted with consideration of different bolt dimensions, the reserved hole constraint condition, and the dimension of slab holes. A finite element (FE) model was established and verified by using test results, and then the model was utilized to investigate the influence of concrete strength, bolt dimension, yield strength, bolt pretension, as well as length-to-diameter ratio of high strength bolts on the performances of shear connectors. On the basis of FE simulation and test results, new design formulas for the calculation of shear resistance behavior were proposed, and comparisons were made with current standards, including AISC, EN 1994-1-1, GB 50017-2017, and relevant references, to check the calculation efficiency. It is confirmed that the proposed equation is in better agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:The present study describes an experimental investigation on shear behavior of GFRP-concrete hybrid beams, consisting of reinforced concrete beams combined with U-shaped glass fiber reinforced polymer pultruded profile constructed as combined tensile reinforcement, permanent formwork and corrosion resistance. A total of six beams were tested, three served as control beams and the remaining were implemented with U-shaped GFRP composites. Test results show that hybrid beam provides significant increase in shear capacity when compared to control RC beam.

Abstract:The primary consideration of FRP-concrete hybrid beams/decks is to handle the connection for FRP girder and concrete slab. This paper presents the results of push-out tests developed to characterize the shear behavior of perforated FRP rib (PFR) as a solution for shear connection of FRP-concrete hybrid beam. Tests reveal that PFRs provide two advantages when compared with traditional steel bolts, related to at least 2.5 times the shear capacity and approximately 10 times the slip modulus. Theoretical analysis indicated that: (i) PFRs are capable of meeting the shear capacity requirement of load transferring between FRP and concrete; (ii) the slip modulus of PFR increases proportionally with the area of the concrete wedge and second orderly with the thickness of the perforated plate; (iii) shear failure occurs in the perforated FRP plate prior to the failure of the concrete wedge, which governs the design of PFR and is the main difference from PBL (perfobond leist) in steel–concrete hybrid beams. Finally, calculation equations for shear capacity and slip modulus of PFR are developed to facilitate the design.

Abstract:Twelve push-out test specimens were conducted with various parameters to study the static and fatigue performance of a new through-bolt shear connector transferring the shear forces of interface between prefabricated hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) slabs and steel girders. It was found that the fibers could improve the fatigue life, capacity and initial stiffness of through-bolt shear connector. While the bolt-hole clearance reduced, the initial stiffness, capacity and slippage of through-bolt shear connector increased. After the steel-concrete interface properties were improved, the initial stiffness increased, and the capacity and slippage reduced. Base on the test results, the equation of the load-slip curve and capacity of through-bolt shear connector with prefabricated HFRC slab were obtained by the regression of test results, and the allowable range of shear force under fatigue load was recommended, which could provide the reference in the design of through-bolt shear connector with prefabricated HFRC slabs.

Abstract:Debonding failure is the main failure mode in flexurally strengthened reinforced concrete beams by externally bonded or near surface mounted fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. It is believed that FRP debonding will be initiated if the shear stress on the concrete-FRP interface reaches the tensile strength of concrete. However, it was found through experimental and analytical studies that the debonding mechanism of FRP composites has the potential of shear failure in combination with debonding failure. Moreover, the shear failure probably influences the debonding failure. Presently, there are very little experimental and analytical studies to investigate the influence of shear resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) beam on FRP debonding failure. The current study investigates and analyzes the effect of shear resistance on FRP debonding failure based on test results. The analytical results show that the shear resistance of RC beam has a great effect on flexural debonding load-carrying capacity of FRP-strengthened RC beam. The influence of shear resistance on flexural debonding load-carrying capacity must be fully considered in flexural strengthening design of RC beams.

Abstract:FRP profile‐concrete hybrid beam, composed of a FRP profile beam, a concrete slab made of normal concrete (NC) or ultra‐high‐performance‐concrete (UHPC), and shear connectors, shows significant potential for employment in large‐span bridges due to its excellent corrosion resistance, lightweight, and easy construction. The structural behavior of such hybrid beam was simulated using a three‐dimensional non‐linear finite element model (FEM) in Abaqus. The Hashin failure model and concrete damage plastic (CDP) model were employed to characterize the progressive failure of FRP, NC, and UHPC, respectively. The FEM considered partial shear connection by utilizing shear load‐slip model and the orthotropic behavior of the FRP profile. The proposed FEM was validated through comparisons with experimental data in terms of load‐midspan deflection curve, load‐end slip curve, and failure modes. A parametric study was subsequently conducted to identify the effects of various factors, including concrete strength, bolt spacing, concrete slab width, concrete slab height, FRP flange and web thickness, and shear span. Based on the results yielded from FEM analysis, the accuracy of the calculation method in Chinese standard (GB‐50608) for predicting the loading capacity of hybrid beams was evaluated and found too conservative.

Abstract:A novel assembly FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer)-concrete hybrid beams/decks system is proposed and investigated in this paper. The performance of FRP shear key (SK) connector, FRP stay-in-place (SIP) form, and their combination for the FRP-concrete hybrid beams/decks is evaluated. The slip modulus and interfacial shear capacity of SK, SIP and their combination were investigated via push shear tests with thirteen specimens and four-point bending test with three FRP-concrete hybrid beams. Push-out test results showed that SK has the same shear capacity level and about ten times the slip modulus compared with steel bolt (SB). The cross section of SK is not a significant parameter because all of the shapes can enhance nearly full composite action between the FRP girder and concrete block. SIP can supply a strong initial natural bond with concrete and substantially save the form for concrete casting. This connection-form system combines the SB, SK and SIP as a structurally optimized design of shear connection and the permanent form. The beam test revealed that this connection system supplied full composite action till the failure of the FRP girder. Deflection of the FRP-concrete beam with the novel system can be predicted using equations based on the full-composite action assumption.

Abstract:Inheriting excellent corrosion resistance of FRP bars, steel-FRP composite bar (SFCB) has better elastic modulus and ductility, promising to be longitudinal reinforcement for concrete structures in harsh environments. While previous research primarily focused on the flexural behavior of hybrid longitudinal SFCB and FRP stirrups reinforced concrete (hybrid-RC) beams, the study about shear behavior has rarely been reported and valuable experimental observations are limited. The unique mechanical properties of SFCB causes the inapplicability of existing shear design method and the risk of brittle shear failure. Here, a simplified shear design method is proposed for hybrid-RC beams by analytical investigation and the shear behavior of hybrid-RC beams is inves-tigated experimentally. Results show that SFCB exhibits similar transverse shear behavior to steel bar. Compared with steel bars reinforced concrete beams, hybrid-RC beams based on the proposed design method have better shear performance including same failure modes, similar deflection, narrower shear crack, and higher shear capacity, due to the post-yielding stiffness of SFCB. Furthermore, a modified calculation method of the shear capacity for hybrid-RC beams is proposed, exhibiting great feasibility and accuracy. These results can provide valuable experimental observations of shear behavior and promote the development of shear design tactics for hybrid-RC beams.
Composite Actions Within Steel-Frp Composite Beam Systems with Novel Blind Bolt Shear Connections

Abstract:The shear stiffness of novel blind bolts was experimentally investigated for shear connections within steel-FRP composite beam systems using steel-FRP joints loaded in tension. The number of bolt rows (either one or two bolt rows) and the effect of the pultrusion orientation of the FRP web-flange sandwich slab on joint stiffness and joint capacity were examined. It was found that joint capacity and failure modes were dependent on the pultrusion configuration of the FRP slab and the number of bolt rows. A unidirectional configuration consisting of an FRP slab with box-profiles parallel to flat panels exhibited shear-out failure, whereas a bidirectional orientation consisting of an FRP slab with box-profiles perpendicular to flat panels exhibited both shear-out and net-tension failure in the FRP component. The experimentally derived shear connector stiffness was then used in a proposed design formulation to predict the bending stiffness of modular steel-FRP composite beam systems, considering two kinds of partial composite actions. These were the composite action provided by the blind bolt shear connector and the composite action provided by transversely-oriented webs within the slab. Abstract:The paper proposes a new type of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) shear reinforcements for reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The specimens are shear reinforced with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer mesh fabric (CFRP-MF) configuration rather than traditional steel stirrups. The shear behaviors of the 15 concrete beams reinforced in shear with CFRP-MF configuration or with/without steel stirrups (as control specimens) was investigated in this paper. The variables of the investigation include shear span-depth ratio (a/d = 1.0, 2.5 and 3.5) and the shear reinforcement ratio of CFRP-MF composites (0.036%, 0.067% and 0.097%). The experimental results indicate that the concrete beams reinforced in shear with the CFRP-MF configuration have similar shear behaviors to the corresponding RC control beams reinforced in shear with steel stirrups especially in overall load-deflection relationship, shear strength, and the crack pattern of ultimate state. The predictions of the specimens? shear strength by using shear design provisions in ACI 440.1R-15, CSA S6-14 and CSA S806-12 are examined and compared.

Abstract:A new design concept that led to a hybrid beam is proposed. It comprises a U-shaped GFRP pultruded profile in which concrete was casted. Results are presented from 6 beams tested to ultimate failure, four of which having a fiber-reinforced plastic(FRP)-reinforced concrete construction of combined tensile reinforcement and permanent shuttering, while the others are conventional reinforced concrete beams as a comparison. It is shown that in comparison with an equivalent reinforced concrete beam, hybrid beam gives a great increase in bearing capacity but decrease in ductility.
