Abstract:In this letter, we report the experimental demonstration of a dissipative self-sustained optomechanical resonator on a silicon chip by introducing dissipative optomechanical coupling between a vertically offset bus waveguide and a racetrack optical cavity. Different from conventional blue-detuning limited self-oscillation, the dissipative optomechanical resonator exhibits self-oscillation in the resonance and red detuning regime. The anti-damping effects of dissipative optomechanical coupling are validated by both numerical simulation and experimental results. The demonstration of the dissipative self-sustained optomechanical resonator with an extended working range has potential applications in optomechanical oscillation for on-chip signal modulation and processing.

Abstract:We study optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) in a compound system consisting of coupled optical resonators and a mechanical mode, focusing on the unconventional role of loss. We find that optical transparency can emerge at the otherwise strongly absorptive regime in the OMIT spectrum, by using an external nanotip to enhance the optical loss. In particular, loss-induced revival of optical transparency and the associated slow-to-fast light switch can be identified in the vicinity of an exceptional point. These results open up a counterintuitive way to engineer micro-mechanical devices with tunable losses for e.g., coherent optical switch and communications.

Abstract:We study tunable optomechanically induced transparency by controlling the dark-mode effect induced by two mechanical modes coupled to a common cavity field. This is realized by introducing a phase-dependent phonon-exchange interaction, which is used to form a loop-coupled configuration. Combining this phase-dependent coupling with the optomechanical interactions, the dark-mode effect can be controlled by the quantum interference effect. In particular, the dark-mode effect in this two-mechanical-mode optomechanical system can lead to a double-amplified optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) window and a higher efficiency of the second-order sideband in comparison with the standard optomechanical system. This is because the effective mechanical decay rate related to the linewidth of the OMIT window becomes a twofold increase in the weak-coupling limit. When the dark-mode effect is broken, controllable double transparency windows appear and the second-order sideband, as well as the light delay or advance, is significantly enhanced. For an N-mechanical-mode optomechanical system, we find that in the presence of the dark-mode effect, the amplification multiple of the linewidth of the OMIT window is nearly proportional to the number of mechanical modes, and that the OMIT with a single window becomes the one with N tunable windows by breaking the dark-mode effect. The study will be useful in optical information storage within a large-frequency bandwidth and multichannel optical communication based on optomechanical systems.

Perfect optomechanically induced transparency in two-cavity optomechanics

Abstract:Here, we study the controllable optical responses in a two-cavity optomechanical system, especially on the $\mathit{perfect}$ optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) in the model which has never been studied before. The results show that the perfect OMIT can still occur even with a large mechanical damping rate, and at the perfect transparency window the long-lived slow light can be achieved. In addition, we find that the conversion between the perfect OMIT and optomechanically induced absorption can be easily achieved just by adjusting the driving field strength of the second cavity. We believe that the results can be used to control optical transmission in modern optical networks.

Abstract:Opto-mechanical systems have been investigated both theoretically and experimentally characteristic of optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT), i.e., sharp transmission features controlled by a second control beam. We studied theoretically the opto-mechanically induced transparency (OMIT) properties of double-cavity opto-mechanical system with symmetry and -asymmetry within the setting of cavity quantum electrodynamics. By means of Fourier transformation we get the pump-probe spectroscopy exactly and find the second cavity plays important roles in the properties of probe beam transmission. The dip value of OMIT can reach zero which means perfect transmission. There appear two transparency windows for the probe beam in one resonator with the increasing power of control laser beam fed into the other resonator, especially the probe beam can obtain significant gain even without direct tunneling of photons between two resonators. We expect our results would be realized experimentally and be useful for the future designs of quantum functional devices.

Abstract:We propose an optomechanical dissipation engineering scheme by introducing an ancillary mechanical mode with a large decay rate to control the density of states of the optical mode. The effective linewidth of the optical mode can be reduced or broadened, manifesting the dissipation engineering. To prove the ability of our scheme to improve the performances of the optomechanical system, we studied optomechanical entanglement and phonon cooling. It is demonstrated that the optomechanical entanglement overwhelmed by thermal phonon excitations could be restored via dissipation engineering. For the phonon cooling, an order-of-magnitude improvement could be achieved. Our scheme can be generalized to other systems with multiple bosonic modes, which is experimentally feasible with advances in materials and nanofabrication, including optical Fabry-Perot cavities, superconducting circuits, and nanobeam photonic crystals.

Abstract:We theoretically study the optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) and absorption (OMIA) phenomena in a single microcavity optomechanical system, assisted by an indirectly coupled auxiliary cavity mode. We show that the interference effect between the two optical modes plays an important role and can be used to control the multiple-pathway induced destructive or constructive interference effect. The three-pathway interference could induce an absorption dip within the transparent window in the red sideband driving regime, while we can switch back and forth between OMIT and OMIA with the four-pathway interference. The conversion between the transparency peak and absorption dip can be achieved by tuning the relative amplitude and phase of the multiple light paths interference. Our system proposes a new platform to realize multiple pathways induced transparency and absorption in a single microcavity and a feasible way for realizing all-optical information processing.

Abstract:In an optomechanical resonator, the optical and mechanical excitations can be coherent converted, which induces a transparency window for a weak probe laser beam. Here, we report an experimental study of transient optomechanical-induced transparency (OMIT) using the silica microcavity with breathing modes. We have also reported experimental studies on both OMIT and light storage under nearly the same conditions also illustrates the connections between these two closely related processes. As straightforward extension of the light storage process is to use a readout pulse that couples to a different optical mode. The resulting readout process enables optical wavelength or optical mode conversion.

Abstract:Abstract We theoretically investigated the photothermally and optomechanically induced transparency (PTIT and OMIT) in an optomechanical system filled with quantum dots (QDs). In our proposed system, the right mechanical resonator couples with the optical cavity via radiation pressure, and the left mechanical resonator couples with the optical cavity through the photothermal effects. The system is driven by a strong pump field and a weak probe field. It is shown that double transparency windows can be observed due to PTIT and OMIT. When considering the Jaynes‐Cummings coupling between the QDs and the optical cavity, three transparency windows are observed. We also show that the PTIT can be adjusted by the OMIT and the QDs in the optical cavity. What is more, the coupling strength and the frequency detuning can be used effectively to change the system absorption and dispersion in the PITT transparency window. This indicates that the group delay of the probe light can also be manipulated by the system parameters. The obtained results may be applied in the optical communication such as optical buffer, and so forth.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to induce transparency in one-dimensional disordered multilayers which are composed of negative permittivity and negative permeability metamaterials. First, analytical expressions for transparency condition are derived exactly, providing us a picture that complete tunneling in such kind of multiple-resonance system can be achieved if exponentially growing waves can compensate exponentially decaying waves. Second, a compensating method is used to realize this idea, and both simulations and experiments are performed in the microwave regime to confirm the theoretical analysis. Analysis of Interference Effect in Double Optomechanically Induced Transparency System

Abstract:We propose a scheme to investigate the interference properties of a double optomechanically induced transparency system, which involves two charged nanomechanical resonators, coupled via Coulomb interaction. The results show that the opening of transparency windows is caused by a destructive interference effect only in the weak optical coupling region. For strong optical coupling, normal mode splitting dominates the transparency phenomenon. In the intermediate region, both destructive interference and normal mode splitting contribute to the transparency windows. When the Coulomb coupling is much weaker than the optical coupling, the Coulomb interaction strength linearly determines the distance between the two transparency windows, and has nearly no influence on the destructive interference effect. Otherwise, the system will work in a nonlinear region.

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is a quantum interference effect arising from different transition pathways of optical fields. Within the transparency window, both absorption and dispersion properties strongly change, which results in extensive applications such as slow light and optical storage. Due to the ultra-high quality factors, massive production on a chip and convenient all-optical control, optical microcavities provide an ideal platform for realizing EIT. Here we review the principle and recent development of EIT in optical microcavities. We focus on the following three situations. First, for a coupled-cavity system, all-optical EIT appears when the optical modes in different cavities couple to each other. Second, in a single microcavity, all-optical EIT is created when interference happens between two optical modes. Moreover, the mechanical oscillation of the microcavity leads to optomechanically induced transparency. Then the applications of EIT effect in microcavity systems are discussed, including light delay and storage, sensing, and field enhancement. A summary is then given in the final part of the paper.

Abstract:Some optomechanical systems can be transparent to a probe field when a strong driving field is applied. These systems can provide an optomechanical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We study the transmission of a probe field through a hybrid optomechanical system consisting of a cavity and a mechanical resonator with a two-level system (qubit). The qubit might be an intrinsic defect inside the mechanical resonator, a superconducting artificial atom, or another two-level system. The mechanical resonator is coupled to the cavity field via radiation pressure and to the qubit via the Jaynes-Cummings interaction. We find that the dressed two-level system and mechanical phonon can form two sets of three-level systems. Thus, there are two transparency windows in the discussed system. We interpret this effect as an optomechanical analog of two-color EIT (or double EIT). We demonstrate how to switch between one and two EIT windows by changing the transition frequency of the qubit. We show that the absorption and dispersion of the system are mainly affected by the qubit-phonon coupling strength and the transition frequency of the qubit.

Abstract:Induced transparency is a common but remarkable effect in optics. It occurs when a strong driving field is used to render an otherwise opaque material transparent. The effect is known as electromagnetically induced transparency in atomic media and optomechanically induced transparency in systems that consist of coupled optical and mechanical resonators. In this work, we introduce the concept of photothermally induced transparency (PTIT). It happens when an optical resonator exhibits non-linear behavior due to optical heating of the resonator or its mirrors. Similar to the established mechanisms for induced transparency, PTIT can suppress the coupling between an optical resonator and a traveling optical field. We further show that the dispersion of the resonator can be modified to exhibit slow or fast light. Because of the relatively slow thermal response, we observe the bandwidth of the PTIT to be $2\pi\times15.9$ Hz which theoretically suggests a group velocity of as low as $5$ m/s.

Abstract:Dissipative optomechanics studies the coupling of the motion of an optical element to the decay rate of a cavity. We propose and theoretically explore a realization of this system in the optical domain, using a combined Michelson--Sagnac interferometer, which enables a strong and tunable dissipative coupling. Quantum interference in such a setup results in the suppression of the lower motional sideband, leading to strongly enhanced cooling in the non-sideband-resolved regime. With state-of-the-art parameters, ground-state cooling and low-power quantum-limited position transduction are both possible. The possibility of a strong and tunable dissipative coupling opens up a new route towards observation of fundamental optomechanical effects such as ponderomotive squeezing or nonlinear dynamics. Beyond optomechanics, the method suggested here can be readily transferred to other setups involving such systems as nonlinear media, atomic ensembles, or single atoms.

Abstract:We theoretically study a parallel optical configuration which includes N periodically coupled whispering-gallery-mode resonators. The model shows an obvious effect which has a direct analogy with the phenomenon of multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in quantum systems. The numerical simulations illuminate that the frequency transparency windows are sharp and highly transparent. We also briefly discuss the experimental feasibility of the current scheme in two practical systems, microrings and microdisks.

Abstract:In an optomechanical system, we experimentally engineer the optical density of state to reduce or broaden the effective linewidth of the optical mode by introducing an ancillary mechanical mode, which has a large decay rate, i.e., stimulated backward Brillouin scattering. Based on this dissipation engineering, we could engineer the optical mode linewidth by one order of magnitude. In addition, we can either enhance or suppress the optomechanical cooling and amplification of the target mechanical oscillations. Abstract:A new form of induced transparency enabled by dynamical tunneling coupling of continuous chaos and discrete regular modes in a slightly deformed optical microcavity is demonstrated experimentally. An optical beam is focused on the cavity boundary and tuned on resonance with a high‐Q mode, which leads to destructive interference for the excitation of chaotic field and induces a transparency in the transmission. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with a model based on quantum scattering theory. This tunneling‐induced transparency is accompanied by extremely steep normal dispersion, and holds great potential in slow light and enhanced nonlinear interactions.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) phenomenon and the fast and slow light effects of a four-mode optomechanical system with the Kerr medium. The optomechanical system is composed of an array of three single-mode cavities and a mechanical oscillator. The three cavities are a passive cavity, a no-loss-gain cavity and a gain optical cavity, respectively. A Kerr medium is inserted in the passive cavity. We study the influence of the Kerr medium on the stability of the optomechanical system, and find that the stable regime of the optomechanical system can be adjusted by changing the Kerr coefficient. We demonstrate that the phenomenon of optomechanically induced transparency will appear when the Kerr medium exists in the optomechanical system and find that the frequency position of the absorption peak on the left increases linearly with the Kerr coefficient. In addition, we also investigate the fast and slow light effects in this system. The results show that we can control the fast and slow light by adjusting the Kerr coefficient, tunneling strength, and driving field strength. This study has potential application prospects in the fields of quantum optical devices and quantum information processing.
Subwavelength Light Confinement and Enhancement Enabled by Dissipative Dielectric Nanostructures.

Abstract:Dissipative loss in optical materials is considered one of the major challenges in nano-optics. Here we show that, counter-intuitively, a large imaginary part of material permittivity contributes positively to subwavelength light enhancement and confinement. The Purcell factor and the fluorescence enhancement of dissipative dielectric bowtie nanoantennas, such as Si in ultraviolet (UV), are demonstrated to be orders of magnitude higher than their lossless dielectric counterparts, which is particularly favorable in deep UV applications where metals are plasmonically inactive. The loss-facilitated field enhancement is the result of a large material property contrast and an electric field discontinuity. These dissipative dielectric nanostructures can be easily achieved with a great variety of dielectrics at their Lorentz oscillation frequencies, thus having the potential to build a completely new material platform boosting light-matter interaction over broader frequency ranges, with advantages such as bio-compatibility, CMOS compatibility, and harsh environment endurance.
