Abstract: The Erd\"os-S\'os conjecture states that if $G$ is a graph with average degree more than $k-1$, then G contains every tree of $k$ edges. A spider is a tree with at most one vertex of degree more than 2. In this paper, we prove that Erd\"os-S\'os conjecture holds for all spiders.

Abstract:The Erdos-Sos Conjecture states that if G is a graph with average degree more than k - 1, then G contains every tree of k edges. A special case of the conjecture is the well-known Erdos-Gallai theorem: if G is a graph with average degree more than k - 1, then G contains a path of k edges. A spider is a tree with at most one vertex of degree more than 2, called the center of the spider (if no vertex of degree more than two, then any vertex can be the center). A leg of a spider is a path from the center to a vertex of degree 1. Thus, a path can be regarded as a spider of 1 or 2 legs. In this paper, we prove that if G is a graph with average degree more than k - 1, then G contains every spider of 4 legs.

Abstract:A classical result on extremal graph theory is the Erdos-Gallai theorem: if a graph on n vertices has more than (k-1)n2 edges, then it contains a path of k edges. Motivated by the result, Erdos and Sos conjectured that under the same condition, the graph should contain every tree of k edges. A spider is a rooted tree in which each vertex has degree one or two, except for the root. A leg of a spider is a path from the root to a vertex of degree one. Thus, a path is a spider of 1 or 2 legs. From the motivation, it is natural to consider spiders of 3 legs. In this paper, we prove that if a graph on n vertices has more than (k-1)n2 edges, then it contains every k-edge spider of 3 legs, and also, every k-edge spider with no leg of length more than 4, which strengthens a result of Wozniak on spiders of diameter at most 4.

Abstract:The Erd?s-Sós Conjecture states that if G is a graph with average degree more than k-2,then G contains every tree on k vertices.A spider can be seen as a tree with at most one vertex of degree more than two.Fan,Hong,and Liu proved that the conjecture holds for spiders.In this note,we define a 2-center spider as a tree with at most two adjacent vertices of degree more than two and show that the Erd?s-Sós Conjecture holds for 2-center spiders with legs of lengths at most two adjacent vertices of degree more than 2 as 2-center spider.We prove that if G is a graph on n vertices with average degree more than k-2,then G contains every 2-center spider with k vertices,where length of 2-center spider'legs is no more than 2.

Abstract:Fujita and Kawarabayashi [J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B 98 (2008), 805--811] conjectured that for all positive integers $k$, $m$, there is a (least) non-negative integer $f_{k}(m)$ such that every $k$-connected graph $G$ with $\delta(G)\geq \lfloor\frac{3k}{2}\rfloor+ f_{k}(m)-1$ contains a connected subgraph $W$ of order $m$ such that $G-V(W)$ is still $k$-connected. Mader confirmed Fujita-Kawarabayashi's conjecture by proving $f_{k}(m)=m$ and $W$ is a path. In this paper, the authors will confirm Fujita-Kawarabayashi's conjecture again by proving $f_{k}(m)=m$ and $W$ is a spider by a new method, where a spider is a tree with at most one vertex of degree at least three. Meanwhile, this result will verify a conjecture proposed by Mader [J. Graph Theory 65 (2010), 61--69] for the case of the spider.

Abstract:Erdös and Sós conjectured in 1963 that every graph G on n vertices with edge number e(G) > ½ (k − 1)n contains every tree T with k edges as a subgraph. In this paper, we consider a variation of the above conjecture, that is, for n ≥ 9/2 k 2 + 37/2 k+14 and every graph G on n vertices with e(G) > ½ (k − 1)n, we prove that there exists a graph G′ on n vertices having the same degree sequence as G and containing every tree T with k edges as a subgraph.

Abstract:We establish the $e$-positivity of spider graphs of the form $S(4m+2,\, 2m,\, 1)$, which was conjectured by Aliniaeifard, Wang and van Willigenburg. A key to our proof is the $e_I$-expansion formula of the chromatic symmetric function of paths due to Shareshian and Wachs, where the symbol~$I$ indicates integer compositions rather than partitions. Following the strategy of the divide-and-conquer technique, we pick out one or two positive $e_J$-terms for each negative $e_I$-term in an $e$-expression for the spiders, where $J$ are selected to be distinct compositions obtained by rearranging the parts of $I$.

Abstract:Mader (2010) conjectured that for any tree T of order m, every k-connected graph G with minimum degree at least ⌊3k2⌋+m−1 contains a subtree T′≅T such that G−V(T′) is k-connected. A caterpillar is a tree in which a single path is incident to every edge. The conjecture has been proved when k=1 and for some special caterpillars when k=2. A spider is a tree with at most one vertex with degree more than 2. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture for all caterpillars and spiders when k=2.

Abstract:We study the chromatic symmetric functions of graph classes related to spiders, namely generalized spider graphs (line graphs of spiders), and what we call horseshoe crab graphs. We show that no two generalized spiders have the same chromatic symmetric function, thereby extending the work of Martin, Morin and Wagner. Additionally, we establish that a subclass of generalized spiders, which we call generalized nets, has no e-positive members, providing a more general counterexample to the necessity of the claw-free condition. We use yet another class of generalized spiders to construct a counterexample to a problem involving the $e$-positivity of claw-free, P4-sparse graphs, showing that Tsujie's result on the e-positivity of claw-free, P4-free graphs cannot be extended to graphs in this set. Finally, we investigate the e-positivity of another type of graphs, the horseshoe crab graphs (a class of unit interval graphs), and prove the positivity of all but one of the coefficients. This has close connections to the work of Gebhard and Sagan and Cho and Huh.

Abstract:A conjecture of Luo, Tian and Wu (2022) says that for every positive integer k and every finite tree T with bipartition X and Y (denote t=max⁡{|X|,|Y|}), every k-connected bipartite graph G with δ(G)≥k+t contains a subtree T′≅T such that κ(G−V(T′))≥k. Abstract:We obtain the e-positivity or non-e-positivity of some spider graphs with three legs, the positivity classification of all broom graphs, and the positivity classification of most double broom graphs. The methods involve extracting particular e-coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function of these graphs with the aid of Orellana and Scott’s triple-deletion property, and using the combinatorial formula of Schur coefficients by examining certain special rim hook tabloids. We conjecture that a spider S ( a , b , c ) with c ≥ 3 is e-positive if and only if it is S ( 8 , 5 , 3 ) or S ( 14 , 9 , 5 ).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph and let $\alpha$ be a real number in $[0,1].$ In 2017, Nikiforov proposed the $A_\alpha$-matrix for $G$ as $A_{\alpha}(G)=\alpha D(G)+(1-\alpha)A(G)$, where $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ are the adjacency matrix and the degree diagonal matrix of $G$, respectively. The largest eigenvalue of $A_{\alpha}(G)$ is called the $A_\alpha$-index of $G.$ The famous Erdős-Sós conjecture states that every $n$-vertex graph with more than $\frac{1}{2}(k-1)n$ edges must contain every tree on $k+1$ vertices. In this paper, we consider an $A_\alpha$-spectral version of this conjecture. For $n>k,$ let $S_{n,k}$ be the join of a clique on $k$ vertices with an independent set of $n-k$ vertices and denote by $S^+_{n,k}$ the graph obtained from $S_{n,k}$ by adding one edge. We show that for fixed $k\geq2,\,0<\alpha<1$ and $n\geq\frac{88k^2(k+1)^2}{\alpha^4(1-\alpha)}$, if a graph on $n$ vertices has $A_\alpha$-index at least as large as $S_{n,k}$ (resp. $S^+_{n,k}$), then it contains all trees on $2k+2$ (resp. $2k+3$) vertices, or it is isomorphic to $S_{n,k}$ (resp. $S^+_{n,k}$). These extend the results of Cioabă, Desai and Tait (2022), in which they confirmed the adjacency spectral version of the Erdős-Sós conjecture.

Abstract:We partly confirm a Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type conjecture due to Nikiforov, which is a spectral radius analogue of the well-known Erdős-Sós Conjecture that any tree of order t is contained in a graph of average degree greater than t-2. We confirm Nikiforov's Conjecture for all brooms and for a larger class of spiders. For our proofs we also obtain a new Turán type result which might turn out to be of independent interest.

Abstract:A rough structure theorem is proved for graphs $G$ containing no copy of a bounded degree tree $T$: from any such $G$, one can delete $o(|G||T|)$ edges in order to get a subgraph all of whose connected components have a cover of order $3|T|$. This theorem has the ability to turn questions about sparse $T$-free graphs (about which relatively little is known), into questions about dense $T$-free graphs (for which we have powerful techniques like regularity). There are various applications, the most notable being a proof of the Erdős-Sós Conjecture for large, bounded degree trees.
