Abstract:The global existence of weak solutions to the three space dimensional Prandtl equations is studied under some constraint on its structure. This is a continuation of our recent study on the local existence of classical solutions with the same structure condition. It reveals the sufficiency of the monotonicity condition on one component of the tangential velocity field and the favorable condition on pressure in the same direction that leads to global existence of weak solutions. This generalizes the result obtained by Xin-Zhang on the two-dimensional Prandtl equations to the three-dimensional setting.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the three dimensional Euler equations driven by an additive stochastic forcing. First, we construct global Hölder continuous (stationary) solutions in $C(\mathbb{R};C^{\vartheta})$ space for some $\vartheta>0$ via a different method from \cite{LZ24}. Our approach is based on applying stochastic convex integration to the construction of Euler flows in \cite{DelSze13} to derive uniform moment estimates independent of time. Second, for any divergence-free Hölder continuous initial condition, we show the existence of infinitely many global-in-time probabilistically strong and analytically weak solutions in $L^p_{\rm{loc}}([0,\infty);C^{\vartheta'}) \cap C_{\rm{loc}}([0,\infty);H^{-1})$ for all $p\in [1,\infty)$ and some $\vartheta'>0$.

Abstract:We show the existence of Hölder continuous periodic weak solutions of the 2D Boussinesq equation with thermal diffusion which satisfy the prescribed kinetic energy. Abstract:We develop a new approach to study the well-posedness theory of the Prandtl equation in Sobolev spaces by using a direct energy method under a monotonicity condition on the tangential velocity field instead of using the Crocco transformation. Precisely, we firstly investigate the linearized Prandtl equation in some weighted Sobolev spaces when the tangential velocity of the background state is monotonic in the normal variable. Then to cope with the loss of regularity of the perturbation with respect to the background state due to the degeneracy of the equation, we apply the Nash-Moser-Hormander iteration to obtain a well-posedness theory of classical solutions to the nonlinear Prandtl equation when the initial data is a small perturbation of a monotonic shear flow.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the initial–boundary value problem of the 3D primitive equations with only horizontal viscosities and horizontal diffusion. We first establish the local well–posedness result of this system, with the initial data belongs to the anisotropic Sobolev pace H0,s(s>12). Then, under the basic and high-order energy estimates, one can extend the local solution to the global one provided that s>1. The restrictions on the initial data is more weaker than the previous results which are obtained by Cao et al. ((2016) [8] and (2017) [9]), in which the initial data belongs to H2 and H1∩L∞, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of the three-dimensional primitive equations for oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with only horizontal viscosity and horizontal diffusivity. We establish the local, in time, well-posedness of strong solutions, for any initial data $(v_0, T_0)\in H^1$, by using the local, in space, type energy estimate. We also establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions for this system, with any initial data $(v_0, T_0)\in H^1\cap L^\infty$, such that $\partial_zv_0\in L^m$, for some $m\in(2,\infty)$, by using the logarithmic type anisotropic Sobolev inequality and a logarithmic type Gronwall inequality. This paper improves the previous results obtained in [Cao, C.; Li, J.; Titi, E.S.: Global well-posedness of the 3D primitive equations with only horizontal viscosity and diffusivity, Comm. Pure Appl.Math., Vol. 69 (2016), 1492-1531.], where the initial data $(v_0, T_0)$ was assumed to have $H^2$ regularity.

We continue our study on the global solution to the two-dimensional Prandtl's system for unsteady boundary layers in the class considered by Oleinik, provided that the pressure is favorable. First, by using a different method from [Z. Xin and L. Zhang, Adv. Math., 181 (2004), pp. 88–133], we gave a direct proof of existence of a global weak solution by a direct BV estimate. Then we prove the uniqueness and continuous dependence on data of such a weak solution to the initial boundary value problem. Finally, we show the smoothness of the weak solutions and then the global existence of smooth solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the almost global existence of classical solutions to the 3D Prandtl system with the initial data which lie within $\varepsilon $ of a stable shear flow. Using anisotropic Littlewood-Paley energy estimates in tangentially analytic norms and introducing new linearly-good unknowns, we prove that the 3D Prandtl system has a unique solution with the lifespan of which is greater than $\exp (\varepsilon ^{-1}/\log (\varepsilon ^{-1}))$ . This result extends the work obtained by Ignatova and Vicol (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 2:809–848, 2016) on the 2D Prandtl equations to the three-dimensional setting.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an instability criterion for the Prandtl equations in three-dimensional space, which shows that the monotonicity condition on tangential velocity fields is not sufficient for the well-posedness of the three-dimensional Prandtl equations, in contrast to the classical well-posedness theory of the two-dimensional Prandtl equations under the Oleinik monotonicity assumption. Both linear stability and nonlinear stability are considered. This criterion shows that the monotonic shear flow is linearly stable for the three-dimensional Prandtl equations if and only if the tangential velocity field direction is invariant with respect to the normal variable, and this result is an exact complement to our recent work (A well-posedness theory for the Prandtl equations in three space variables. arXiv:1405.5308, 2014) on the well-posedness theory for the three-dimensional Prandtl equations with a special structure.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with existence and uniqueness, and stability of the solution for the 3D Prandtl equation in a polynomial weighted Sobolev space. The main novelty of this paper is to directly prove the long time well-posdness to 3D Prandtl equation without any structural assumption by the energy method. Moreover, the solution's lifespan can be extended to any large $T$, provided that the initial data with a perturbation lies in the monotonic shear profile of small size $e^{-T}$. This result improves the work by Xu and Zhang (J. Differential Equations, 263(12)(2017), 8749-8803) on the 2D Prandtl equations, achieving an extension to the three-dimensional case.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem to the three-dimensional primitive equations for the oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with only horizontal eddy viscosities in the horizontal momentum equations and only vertical diffusivity in the temperature equation in the domain $\Omega=M\times(-h,h)$, with $M=(0,1)\times(0,1)$. Global well-posedness of strong solutions is established, for any initial data $(v_0,T_0) \in H^1(\Omega)\cap L^\infty(\Omega)$ with $(\partial_z v_0, \nabla_H T_0) \in L^q(\Omega)$ and $v_0 \in L_z^1(B^1_{q,2}(M))$, for some $q \in (2,\infty)$, by using delicate energy estimates and maximal regularity estimate in the anisotropic setting.

Abstract:We consider the validity of Prandtl boundary layer expansion of solutions to the initial boundary value problem for inhomogeneous incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations in the half-plane when both viscosity and resistivity coefficients tend to zero, where the no-slip boundary condition is imposed on velocity while the perfectly conducting condition is given on magnetic field. Since there exist strong boundary layers, the essential difficulty in establishing the uniform L-infinity estimates of the error functions comes from the unboundedness of vorticity of strong boundary layers. Under the assumptions that the viscosity and resistivity coefficients take the same order of a small parameter and the initial tangential component of magnetic field has a positive lower bound near the boundary, we prove the validity of Prandtl boundary layer ansatz in L-infinity sense in Sobolev framework. Compared with the homogeneous incompressible case considered in [33], there exists a strong boundary layer of density. Consequently, some suitable functionals should be designed and the elaborated co-normal energy estimates will be involved in analysis due to the variation of density and the interaction between the density and velocity. Abstract:We develop a convex integration scheme for constructing nonunique weak solutions to the hydrostatic Euler equations (also known as the inviscid primitive equations of oceanic and atmospheric dynamics) in both two and three dimensions. We also develop such a scheme for the construction of nonunique weak solutions to the three-dimensional viscous primitive equations, as well as the two-dimensional Prandtl equations. While in Boutros et al. (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 62(8):219, 2023) the classical notion of weak solution to the hydrostatic Euler equations was generalised, we introduce here a further generalisation. For such generalised weak solutions, we show the existence and nonuniqueness for a large class of initial data. Moreover, we construct infinitely many examples of generalised weak solutions which do not conserve energy. The barotropic and baroclinic modes of solutions to the hydrostatic Euler equations (which are the average and the fluctuation of the horizontal velocity in the z -coordinate, respectively) that are constructed have different regularities.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a global existence of weak solutions to the two-dimensional Prandtl's system for unsteady boundary layers in the class considered by Oleinik (J. Appl. Math. Mech. 30 (1966) 951) provided that the pressure is favourable. This generalizes the local well-posedness results due to Oleinik (1966; Mathematical Models in Boundary Layer Theory, Chapman & Hall, London, 1999). For the proof, we introduce a viscous splitting method so that the asymptotic behaviour of the solution near the boundary can be estimated more accurately by methods applicable to the degenerate parabolic equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the 3D Prandtl equation in a periodic domain and prove the local existence and uniqueness of solutions by the energy method in a polynomial weighted Sobolev space. Compared to the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the classical Prandtl equations where the Crocco transform has always been used with the general outer flow $U\neq\text{constant}$, this Crocco transform is not needed here for 3D Prandtl equations. We use the skill of cancellation mechanism and construct a new unknown function to show that the existence and uniqueness of solutions to 3D Prandtl equations (cf. Masmoudi and Wong, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 68(10)(2015), 1683-1741) which extends from the two dimensional case in \cite {12} to the present three dimensional case with a special structure.

Abstract:We study the Navier-Stokes-Darcy-Boussinesq system that models the thermal convection of a fluid overlying a saturated porous medium in a general decomposed domain. In both two and three spatial dimensions, we first prove the existence of global weak solutions to the initial boundary value problem subject to the Lions and Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones interface conditions. The proof is based on a proper time-implicit discretization scheme combined with the Leray-Schauder principle and compactness arguments. Next, we establish a weak-strong uniqueness result such that a weak solution coincides with a strong solution emanating from the same initial data as long as the latter exists.

Abstract:The well-known Constantin–Lax–Majda (CLM) equation, an important toy model of the 3D Euler equations without convection, can develop finite time singularities (Constantin et al. in Commun Pure Appl Math 38:715–724, 1985). De Gregorio modified the CLM model by adding a convective term (De Gregorio in Math Methods Appl Sci 19(15):1233–1255, 1996), which is known important for fluid dynamics (Hou and Lei in Commun Pure Appl Math 62(4):501–564, 2009; Okamoto in J Math Soc Jpn 65(4):1079–1099, 2013). Presented are two results on the De Gregorio model. The first one is the global well-posedness of such a model for general initial data with non-negative (or non-positive) vorticity which is based on a newly discovered conserved quantity. This verifies the numerical observations for such class of initial data. The second one is an exponential stability result of ground states, which is similar to the recent significant work of Jia et al. (Ration Mech Anal, 231:1269–1304, 2019), with the zero mean constraint on the initial data being removable. The novelty of the method is the introduction of the new solution space $${\mathcal {H}}_{DW}$$ together with a new basis and an effective inner product of $${\mathcal {H}}_{DW}$$.
