Abstract:In this paper, the combustion process of liquid propellant ammonium dinitramide (ADN)-methanol aqueous solution in a small space thruster is investigated experimentally and numerically. The phase Doppler anemometer measurement is used to investigate the injection process and the results are used as the liquid boundary condition in the simulation to minimize uncertainties. Hot fire tests have also been operated to estimate the performance of the thruster. To simulate the complicated processes in the thruster, a modified multi-component droplet model is employed to simulate the evaporation process considering the interaction between the liquid droplet and the porous media. A non-equilibrium model for the porous media is used to describe the heat transfer in the catalyst bed. A reduced chemical mechanism containing 18 species and 40 reactions is used to simulate the reactions of gas-phase ADN and methanol. The results show that the decomposition of ADN and the oxidization of methanol do not happen synchronously in the chamber. The decomposition of ADN takes place near the inlet while methanol is oxidized downstream of the porous media. The establishment of pressure in the thruster depends on the evaporation and reaction processes and the temperature changes relatively slowly because the porous media increases the thermal inertia of the whole system.

Abstract:In this work, the evaporation and combustion processes of liquid propellant ammonium dinitramide-methanol aqueous solution were investigated by a thermogravimetric analyzer and a Curie-point pyrolysis unit, respectively, and the gas-phase products were measured by a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that methanol and water evaporated first, followed by the decomposition of ammonium dinitramide at heating rates of 5-15 degrees C/min. When a catalyst was added, ammonium dinitramide decomposed much faster and released heat that let methanol evaporate immediately as the propellant solution was in contact with the catalyst particles. To explore how the decomposition of ammonium dinitramide is coupled with the oxidation of methanol, the propellant solution was heated by a Curie-point pyrolysis unit at a rate of 3000 degrees C/s to temperatures ranging from 160 to 670 degrees C. Large amounts of nitrous oxide and ammonia were detected at all temperatures, suggesting that most of the decomposition of ammonium dinitramide occurred at the condensed phase. Finally, a detailed gas-phase ammonium dinitramide-methanol reaction model was built to analyze the coupling between the decomposition of ammonium dinitramide and the oxidation of methanol.

Abstract:The ammonium dinitramide (ADN) based liquid propellant is an environmentally friendly propellant that can be used in small rockets.Combustion of an ADN-based liquid propellant in an aerospace thruster is investigated numerically with the droplets described by the Euler-Lagrange approach and with the heat transfer in the porous media using the non-equilibrium model.The interactions among the gas,liquid droplets and porous media are all included.An 18 species and 40 reactions reduced chemical mechanism is used to model the reactions between ADN and CH3OH in the gaseous phase to estimate the thruster performance.The results show that the heat release from the combustion is transferred upstream to enhance the evaporation of the liquid propellant by the porous media.In the thruster,the ADN decomposition and the CH3OH oxidization do not happen at the same time.The ADN decomposition occurs near the inlet while the CH3OH is oxidized downstream of the porous media and in the combustor.

Abstract:We present results from a three-dimensional (3D) direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a spatially developing n-dodecane round jet flame. The thermochemical conditions (i.e. pressure, temperature and oxidiser composition) correspond to those of Spray A, an experimental target flame of the Engine Combustion Network (ECN). To make the DNS computationally tractable, we consider a gas jet with a reduced Reynolds number of 17,000 and a shorter lifted length of 11 times the jet diameter. The flame structure and stabilisation mechanism of the statistically steady jet flame are discussed. Overall the flame structure is similar to that identified from experimental observations, i.e. a region of high formaldehyde (CH2O) concentration, which marks the low-temperature chemistry (LTC), is present upstream of the main flame and persists downstream in the central region of the jet where the mixture is rich. A high-temperature (HTC) nonpremixed flame marked by OH radicals shrouds the jet. Ignition kernels are observed upstream of the flame base, some of which are convected downstream and join with the main flame. At the flame base, a three-branch structure is observed, namely an LTC branch upstream of the flame, a rich HTC branch attached to the flame base and a trailing nonpremixed flame anchored at the stoichiometric mixture fraction. A detailed analysis of the flame stabilisation mechanism is reported, employing structural comparisons to two-dimensional (2D) reference cases, transport budgets, and flame speeds. It is concluded from these analyses that the flame is stabilised principally by flame propagation. The role of autoignition kernels is also analysed and found to be secondary.

Abstract:The development of propulsion systems based on green propellants, as an alternative to hydrazines, has been gaining interest within the space community. The study of Ammonium Dinitramide (ADN)-based liquid monopropellant, which is low-toxic and can deliver high performance, is the focal point of interest for Space Solutions Co., Ltd., Daejeon, Republic of Korea. A 1N ADN-based propulsion system was designed to evaluate the performance of the propellant. By combining a thermal and catalytic bed in a reactor, the performance of the propellant was examined in a designed thruster (chamber pressure of 11 bar). A total of 16 tests, with pulse mode experiments, were conducted; the accumulated firing time was 285 s. The preheating temperatures were maintained between 350 and 400 °C to achieve steady-state combustion. Notably, the maximum combustion efficiency was 91%. Test 9 recorded the highest decomposition temperature of propellant in the catalyst bed (1422 °C). Interestingly, the combustion instability observed throughout this study was ≤0.5%. This study could assist in the further development of ADN-based propulsion systems.

Abstract:As an eco-friendly alternative fuel material, ammonium dinitramide (ADN, NH₄N(NO₂)₂) is safe and stable at room temperature; however, it requires high purity for practical applications. A small amount of impurities can retard the catalytic decomposition of the monopropellant in the thruster, lower the specific impulse, and induce side effects such as clogging of the nozzle. Therefore, we purified NH₄N(NO₂)₂ by performing repeated extractions, adsorption by powdered activated carbon, and low-temperature extractions. In this study, we evaluated the chemical density of purified NH₄N(NO₂)₂ through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and ion chromatography, and obtained a final purity of 99.8%. Furthermore, we fabricated a liquid fuel using high-purity NH₄N(NO₂)₂ as the main oxidizing agent, and can be prepared a mono-propellant formulation that exhibited decomposition at a minimum temperature of 148 °C.

Abstract:The transmissive mode laser micro-ablation performance of near-infrared (NIR) dye-optimized ammonium dinitramide (ADN)-based liquid propellant was investigated in laser plasma propulsion using a pulse YAG laser with 5 ns pulse width and 1064 nm wavelength. Miniature fiber optic near-infrared spectrometer, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and high-speed camera were used to study laser energy deposition, thermal analysis of ADN-based liquid propellants and the flow field evolution process, respectively. Experimental results indicate that two important factors, laser energy deposition efficiency and heat release from energetic liquid propellants, obviously affect the ablation performance. The results showed that the best ablation effect of 0.4 mL ADN solution dissolved in 0.6 mL dye solution (40%-AAD) liquid propellant was obtained with the ADN liquid propellant content increasing in the combustion chamber. Furthermore, adding 2% ammonium perchlorate (AP) solid powder gave rise to variations in the ablation volume and energetic properties of propellants, which enhanced the propellant enthalpy variable and burn rate. Based on the AP optimized laser ablation, the optimal single-pulse impulse (I)~9.8 μN·s, specific impulse (Isp)~234.9 s, impulse coupling coefficient (Cm)~62.43 dyne/W and energy factor (η)~71.2% were obtained in 200 μm scale combustion chamber. This work would enable further improvements in the small volume and high integration of liquid propellant laser micro-thruster.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition characteristics and fuel oxidation mechanism of ammonium dinitramide (ADN)‐based liquid propellant are of great practical significance, but it is difficult to detect the whole intermediates and products using traditional experimental methods. In this paper, the thermal decomposition of ADN‐based liquid propellant at different temperatures (1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000 K) was simulated using the reactive molecular dynamics method. The effect of temperature on the thermal decomposition of propellant and the distribution of the main products were investigated. The results showed that the temperature played a role in promoting the decomposition of propellant. The main products of ADN‐based liquid propellant were N2, H2O, NH3, HNO3, ⋅NHO, CH2O, CO2, and NO2, while their evolution and generation pathways were also described in detail. The initial decomposition of ADN was the breakage of N−H bonds in ⋅NH4 or N−N/N−O bonds in ⋅N(NO2)2, and methanol generated free radicals by dehydrogenation. There was no direct chemical reaction between ADN and methanol, and the interaction was accomplished through the generation and consumption of free radicals. H2O provided a large amount of ⋅H and ⋅HO leading to a lower activation energy of ADN in propellant than that from reference. The overall reaction mechanism of the liquid propellant was deduced. The results would help to further investigate the reaction mechanism of ADN‐based liquid propellants.

Abstract:Although various hypergolic propellants like MMH/N2O4 (monomethylhydrazine/dinitrogen tetroxide) are widely used in small rocket engines, there remains a lack of in-depth study conducted on their chemical reactions and spray combustion behaviors. To fill this research gap, a simplified chemical kinetic model that is suitable for three-dimensional simulation was proposed in this paper for MMH/N2O4. Then, numerical investigation was conducted using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model to explore the transient injection and atomization of MMH/N2O4 impinging jets in a small bipropellant thruster. Also, the instantaneous formation and evolution of the fan-shaped liquid film were analyzed. With the spray distribution determined, the proposed kinetic model and two existing mechanisms were applied to simulate spray combustion and heat transfer within the thruster, respectively, under the Euler–Lagrange framework. According to the research results, the liquid film covered nearly the entire chamber wall with a sawtooth pattern, which protected against the high temperatures of the engine wall. Notably, the two existing mechanisms showed significant errors in predicting temperature changes around the wall due to the excessively simplified reaction pathways. In contrast, the proposed model enabled the accurate prediction of the chamber pressure, wall temperature, and thrust with an error of less than 10%. Given the high accuracy achieved by the proposed numerical method, it provides a valuable reference for the development of advanced space engines.

Abstract:As a new type of green propellant, ammonium dinitramide (ADN)-based energetic propellants have wide application value and development potential in the field of space propulsion. This paper delves into the intricate impact of varying initial temperatures, pressures, and propellant component ratios on critical parameters, including temperature, combustion rate, and heat release, in the straight nozzle of an ADN-based propellant. The findings indicate that an elevation in both initial temperature and ADN ratio expedites the thermal decomposition rate of ADN, thereby elevating the average temperature in the nozzle. However, the elevation in initial temperature has a negative effect on the overall rise amplitude of average temperature. Furthermore, the initial pressure setting is crucial in determining whether the oxidation reaction of the fuel CH3OH occurs in ADN propellants. When the initial pressure is greater than 10 atm, CH3OH is completely consumed, and the final average temperature is about 2650 K, which increases by 558.89% compared with that at 1 atm. Our work aims to provide theoretical guidance and practical optimization strategies for enhancing propellant performance and optimizing thruster structure design.

Abstract:This work focuses on flame structure analysis and composition space modeling of a multidimensional premixed hydrogen flame transitioning from a laminar stable condition to a thermodiffusively unstable state. Specifically, budget and a priori analyses are conducted based on a detailed chemistry simulation of a 2D expanding, thermodiffusively unstable hydrogen flame, and the recurring issues for modeling dif-ferential diffusion, the strain rate and curvature in the thermodiffusively unstable flame are addressed in a single newly proposed flamelet tabulation method. The model is based on recently developed self-contained strained-curved premixed flamelet equations in composition space (Scholtissek et al., 2019, CNF), which inherently incorporate the interactions among differential diffusion, the strain rate and cur-vature. The validity of the newly proposed flamelet tabulation method is evaluated based on the rep-resentative strongly strained-curved flamelets extracted from the reference simulation, featuring wide ranges of strain rates and curvatures. The advance realized in the proposed flamelet model is confirmed by comparing it with a conventional flamelet tabulation method. Through the budget analysis, the effects of curvature on the diffusion along the flame front (i.e., tangential diffusion) are quantified. Through the a priori analysis, the suitability of the proposed flamelet tabulation method in predicting differential dif-fusion is confirmed. For the prediction of the strain rate and curvature, it is found that introducing the strain rate and curvature themselves as the trajectory variables does not necessarily improve the predic-tion accuracy in the reaction zone, compared to the flamelet model based on the 1D freely-propagating premixed flame with differential diffusion. To remedy this, the trajectory variables that can characterize the flame structure's internal response to the strain rate and curvature are identified. The results show that the thermo-chemical variables in the thermodiffusively unstable flame at atmospheric pressure can be accurately predicted by the newly introduced trajectory variables based on the 1D strained-curved flamelet equations.(c) 2021 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:Nonintrusive temperature measurements for a real ammonium dinitramide (ADN)-based thruster by using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy and monochromatic radiation thermometry are proposed. The ADN-based thruster represents a promising future space propulsion employing green, nontoxic propellant. Temperature measurements in the chamber enable quantitative thermal analysis for the thruster, providing access to evaluate thermal properties of the thruster and optimize thruster design. A laser-based sensor measures temperature of combustion gas in the chamber, while a monochromatic thermometry system based on thermal radiation is utilized to monitor inner wall temperature in the chamber. Additional temperature measurements of the outer wall temperature are conducted on the injector, catalyst bed, and combustion chamber of the thruster by using thermocouple, respectively. An experimental ADN thruster is redesigned with optimizing catalyst bed length of 14 mm and steady-state firing tests are conducted under various feed pressures over the range from 5 to 12 bar at a typical ignition temperature of 200 degrees C. A threshold of feed pressure higher than 8 bar is required for the thruster's normal operation and upstream movement of the heat release zone is revealed in the combustion chamber out of temperature evolution in the chamber. Abstract:During the operation of ADN (ammonium dinitramide, (NH4+N(NO2)2−))-based thrusters, the ADN-based liquid propellant, a non-toxic green energetic material, tends to flow boil in the capillary tube due to heat transfer from the wall. A three-dimensional transient numerical simulation of the flow boiling of ADN-based liquid propellant in the capillary tube was carried out using the VOF (Volume of Fluid) coupled Lee model. The flow-solid temperature and the gas–liquid two-phase distribution and the wall heat flux at different heat reflux temperatures were analyzed. The results show that the magnitude of the mass transfer coefficient of the Lee model significantly influences the gas–liquid distribution in the capillary tube. The total bubble volume increased from 0 mm3 to 957.4 mm3 when the heat reflux temperature was increased from 400 K to 800 K. The bubble formation position moves upwards along the inner wall surface of the capillary tube. Increasing the heat reflux temperature intensifies the boiling phenomenon. When the outlet temperature exceeded 700 K, the transient liquid mass flow rate in the capillary tube was already reduced by more than 50%. The results of the study can be used as a reference for the design of ADN-based thruster.

Abstract:The green propellant or non-toxic propellant is an important research area in propulsion technology. Ammonium dinitramide (ADN,NH4[N(NO2)2]) is such a promising green propellant. It is a high-energy inorganic salt that can be used as an oxidizer in both solid and liquid propellant rockets, and has potential to replace ammonium perchlorate because of its high burning rate and chlorine-free combustion. A lot of research on thermal decomposition and combustion of ADN has been reported and reviewed comprehensively by Yang et al in 2005 [1]. These works promoted the development of the ADN solid propellant. The research on ADN-based liquid propellant is much less than that on solid propellant and attracts more attention in recent years. The purpose of developing ADN-based liquid propellant is to replace the toxic hydrazine and a promising way is to dissolve the ADN in a fuel/water mixture. The FOI has developed and tested the FLP series of ADN-based liquid propellants to meet the requirement when stored and used in the a spacecraft. One typical composition is 63.4% ADN , 25.4% water, 11.2% methanol(FLP-103) [2].

Abstract:An experimental study was performed to investigate combustion characteristics of ammonium dinitramide (ADN) based liquid propellant with electrical ignition method in a combustion chamber. The experiment was conducted in different gas atmospheres such as argon, air and nitrous oxide under an on-load voltage range of 60–100 V. The influence of the gas atmosphere, on-load voltage on the ignition delay time, peak combustion pressure, ignition energy, total energy and key reaction products mole fractions were studied. The ignition delay time of propellant decreases gradually with the increase of ignition voltage, while the ambient gas has little effect on the ignition delay time because the flame appears inside the propellant earliest. The peak combustion pressure of propellant is highest when the ambient gas is nitrous oxide, whereas lowest in argon atmosphere. The ignition energy and total energy are insensitive to gas atmosphere and decrease gradually with the increasing on-load voltage. The concentration of N 2 O increases with the increase of on-load voltage. The mole fraction of CO decreases with the increase of on-load voltage in general, especially obviously at relatively high on-load voltage of 100 V.

Abstract:An experimental study was carried out on the ignition characteristics of the HAN/(Emim)(EtSO4) (hydroxylammonium nitrate and 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium ethyl sulfate) dual-mode ionic liquid monopropellant in chemical propulsion mode in model thrusters. Firstly, a model thruster with a detachable convergent nozzle was designed and fabricated. Secondly, catalytic ignition experiments at different flow rates were carried out in atmosphere and in high chamber pressure environment, respectively, using a model thruster, with and without the convergent nozzle. During the catalytic ignition process, measurement methods such as thermocouple, pressure sensor, and flue gas analyzer were employed to obtain the temperature at different depths of the catalytic bed, the pressure of the combustion chamber, and the concentration variations of gaseous products CO, CO2, CH4, SO2, NO, and NO2. Then the three characteristic stages of water evaporation, HAN decomposition, and (Emim)(EtSO4) combustion were analyzed at the initiation time, and the reaction characteristics in the process of the catalytic ignition were analyzed. In addition, the composition and concentration of the combustion products at equilibrium were theoretically calculated. The effects of temperature and pressure on the concentrations of five main gaseous products were studied. Finally, the exhaust gas of the three groups of catalytic ignition experiments under different pressure environments was separately collected and measured with gas chromatography (GC) when the experiments approached equilibrium, the result of which roughly agrees with the theoretical calculations. These results are of great significance for exploring the chemical propulsion of the dual-mode ionic liquid propellant and understanding its physical catalytic combustion mechanisms.

Abstract:Hydrazine is toxic and carcinogenic, which greatly increases the difficulty of application and no longer meets the needs of green aerospace. As a green propellant, the Ammonium Dinitramide (ADN)-based liquid propellant has the advantages of higher specific impulse, being non-toxic, pollution-free, and easy storage. However, an ADN-based space engine in orbit has exposed the problems of high-temperature deactivation of catalysts and cold-start failure. An active ignition technology—electric ignition technology was explored in this paper to break through the technical bottleneck of catalyst deactivation and the inability to a cold start. An experimental system of a constant-volume combustor for the ADN-based liquid propellant based on the electric ignition method was established. The electric ignition and combustion characteristics of the ADN-based liquid propellant in a volume combustor with an electric ignition method were studied. The influencing mechanisms of the ignition voltage and the electrode structure on the electric ignition characteristics of the ADN-based liquid propellant were investigated. An elevation of the ignition voltage could facilitate the ignition process of the ADN-based liquid propellant, curtail electric energy input and heating effect, while exerting an adverse impact on the combustion process of the propellant. An increase in the ignition voltage enhanced the ignition process of the propellant while simultaneously suppressing its combustion process when utilizing mesh electrodes. Compared to the strip electrodes, the mesh electrodes increased the contact area between the electrodes and the propellant, increased the electric energy input power in the electric ignition process, and reduced the ignition delay time. The mesh electrodes could promote the combustion process of the propellant to a certain extent.

Abstract:Ammonium dinitramide (ADN, [NH_4]^+[N(NO_2)_2]^- ) and its related propellants are promising high energy density materials for new-generation space propulsion. In order to ensure their safe utilization, it is of primary importance to assess the risk of accidental combustion events such as detonation. Thus, focusing on ADN and its related propellant composed of ADN, monomethylamine nitrate, and urea with weight percentages of 40:40:20 (AMU442), we have studied the properties and steady structure of detonation propagating in gaseous mixtures formed by their thermal decomposition. The AMU442-based mixture exhibits higher von Neumann and Chapman–Jouguet temperatures and pressures than the ADN-based mixture. The study of their steady detonation structure reveals that the gaseous species resulting from the decomposition of AMU442 have higher detonability than the ones resulting from the decomposition of ADN alone. This is in contrast to a previous study about the safety of these propellants in their original (solid or liquid) phase, i.e., AMU442 has lower sensitivity/reactivity to incident impact than ADN. Thermochemical analyses performed for both mixtures show that the decomposition of HNO_3 plays a dominant role for the energy consumption and initiation of the reaction by releasing both OH and NO_2 . For the ADN-based mixture, the reactions involving HN(NO_2)_2 and HNO_3 are the most sensitive, whereas for the AMU442-based mixture, the most sensitive reactions involve CH_3NH_2 , CH_2NH_2 , and HNO_3 . Reaction pathway diagrams emphasize the higher complexity of the chemical pathways for the AMU442-based mixture because of the presence of [CH_3NH_3]^+[NO_3]^- and CH_4N_2O in the initial mixture. Abstract:Solid Rockets are one of the most efficient and reliable rockets, but production of chlorine gases in the exhausts of these rockets is a major drawback. The toxic exhaust is due to the presence of ammonium perchlorate (AP) as the oxidizer. Thus, the solution to decrease this exhaust is the use of green oxidizers such as ammonium nitrate (AN), but it suffers from the drawback of low energetics and hygroscopicity, phase transitions at room temperatures, and incomplete combustion in pure form. The present work emphasizes the phase stabilization of AN in the presence of AP and cobalt nitrate hexahydrate (CNH) catalyst. FTIR study helps to identify present functional groups in the propellant samples. The thermal decomposition of AN/AP-based propellant samples was investigated with an STA Instrument under a nitrogen atmosphere with different heating rates. The kinetic studies reveal the steps of reactions and activation energy of propellant samples which were observed to change with the addition of AN and CNH. The overall studies confirm that AP and catalyst CNH help in the phase stabilization of AN in propellant samples and enhance the combustion reactions at lower temperatures. The burn rate and flame temperature of the AN-AP propellant sample are found to increase with the addition of a catalyst. The catalyst positively effects the energy barrier or activation energy, burn rate, and flame temperature of AN-AP propellant, thus confirming that the catalyst helps in the combustion process.
