Abstract:Drylands are home to more than 38% of the world's population and are one of the most sensitive areas to climate change and human activities. This review describes recent progress in dryland climate change research. Recent findings indicate that the long‐term trend of the aridity index (AI) is mainly attributable to increased greenhouse gas emissions, while anthropogenic aerosols exert small effects but alter its attributions. Atmosphere‐land interactions determine the intensity of regional response. The largest warming during the last 100 years was observed over drylands and accounted for more than half of the continental warming. The global pattern and interdecadal variability of aridity changes are modulated by oceanic oscillations. The different phases of those oceanic oscillations induce significant changes in land‐sea and north‐south thermal contrasts, which affect the intensity of the westerlies and planetary waves and the blocking frequency, thereby altering global changes in temperature and precipitation. During 1948–2008, the drylands in the Americas became wetter due to enhanced westerlies, whereas the drylands in the Eastern Hemisphere became drier because of the weakened East Asian summer monsoon. Drylands as defined by the AI have expanded over the last 60 years and are projected to expand in the 21st century. The largest expansion of drylands has occurred in semiarid regions since the early 1960s. Dryland expansion will lead to reduced carbon sequestration and enhanced regional warming. The increasing aridity, enhanced warming, and rapidly growing population will exacerbate the risk of land degradation and desertification in the near future in developing countries.

In recent decades, global warming and intensified human activities have exacerbated the environmental degradation or desertification in drylands, threatening nations' economies and sustainable development. Additionally, deserts are an important yet poorly understood component of the Earth system, with dust released from these regions affecting the global biogeochemical cycle and climate. Early-career researchers (Ecrs) at Zhejiang University and elsewhere in china are currently investigating sedimentary archives from the interior of chinese deserts in the eastern Asian desert belt (Fig. 1) to explore complex landscape dynamics through time.

Abstract:Drylands are the homes to over one-third of the world's population, and are vulnerable to anthropogenic climate change. Based on climate projections, recent studies reported a substantial expansion of global drylands in the coming decades and attributed that expansion to future warming. However, the expansion of drylands contradicts a widespread vegetation greening and a slight runoff increase in dryland ecosystems in the same climate models. Here we re-examine changes in global drylands for the coming century and at two future warming targets (1.5 degrees C and 2 degrees C warming relative to the preindustrial level) based on outputs of climate models who participated in the Fifth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). In addition to aridity index (AI) that has been widely used to measure the atmospheric aridity, we also assess changes in drylands from the hydrologic and agro-ecological perspectives, using runoff (Q) and leaf area index (LAI) as indicators, respectively. Our results show that when the impact of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on vegetation water consumption is considered in the estimation of potential evapotranspiration (E-P) and AI, the expansion of atmospheric drylands is at a much slower rate (similar to 0.16% per decade under RCP4.5 and similar to 0.30% per decade under RCP8.5) than previously reported. Moreover, the additional 0.5 degrees C warming does not lead to an evident further expansion of atmospheric drylands. In terms of hydrologic and agro-ecological drylands, both of them show significant shrinks over the coming decades, suggesting reduced hydrologic and agro-ecological aridity in the region. Finally, contrasting with previous perceptions, our results demonstrate that warming only plays a minor role in altering global drylands from all three perspectives. Increases in net radiation are primarily responsible for the expansion of atmospheric drylands, and increases in P and [CO2]-induced increases in vegetation water use efficiency are the key drivers of changes in hydrologic and agro-ecological drylands.

Abstract:Drylands are an essential component of the Earth System and are among the most vulnerable to climate change. In this Review, we synthesize observational and modelling evidence to demonstrate emerging differences in dryland aridity dependent on the specific metric considered. Although warming heightens vapour pressure deficit and, thus, atmospheric demand for water in both the observations and the projections, these changes do not wholly propagate to exacerbate soil moisture and runoff deficits. Moreover, counter-intuitively, many arid ecosystems have exhibited significant greening and enhanced vegetation productivity since the 1980s. Such divergence between atmospheric and ecohydrological aridity changes can primarily be related to moisture limitations by dry soils and plant physiological regulations of evapotranspiration under elevated CO2. The latter process ameliorates water stress on plant growth and decelerates warming-enhanced water losses from soils, while simultaneously warming and drying the near-surface air. We place these climate-induced aridity changes in the context of exacerbated water scarcity driven by rapidly increasing anthropogenic needs for freshwater to support population growth and economic development. Under future warming, dryland ecosystems might respond non-linearly, caused by, for example, complex ecosystem- hydrology-human interactions and increased mortality risks from drought and heat stress, which is a foremost priority for future research.

Abstract:Drylands are serviced as an essential component of the earth's ecosystem. The potential changes in dryland areas are of great importance to the environment, but various debates remain as to whether and to what extent drylands are expected to expand. Here we employ a physically-based potential evapotranspiration (E-P) model accounting for vegetation response to climate change to quantify potential changes in dryland areas, on the basis of a commonly used indicator, aridity index (multiyear mean EP over precipitation). Results show that by the end of this century, drylands will expand slightly by similar to 5%, while vegetation productivity will increase by similar to 50%. Elevated CO2 slows down the increase rate of EP that impedes the expansion of drylands, but greatly promotes vegetation growth with increases in both leaf assimilation and canopy foliage. These findings improve our understanding of the potential changes in dryland and their ecological impacts in a warmer climate.

Abstract:China has 6.6 million km 2 of drylands that support approximately 580 million people. These drylands are at risk of desertification. In this Review, the changes observed in China’s drylands are synthesized, with a focus on their drivers and the effects of 13 large-scale land conservation and restoration programmes aimed at mitigating them, including the Three-North Shelterbelt Development Program and Grain for Green Program. After the implementation of the first large-scale restoration programme in 1978, 45.76% of China’s drylands experienced statistically significant land improvement or vegetation greenness, as identified by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index. However, activities associated with restoration and conservation projects, such as afforestation, also impose substantial water pressure. Desertification thus remained prevalent during 1980–2015, with 11.43% drylands (especially in north-eastern and north-western drylands) experiencing land degradation or vegetation brownness. Drylands remain at risk of expansion owing to increasing aridity, particularly in semi-arid areas. Future trade-offs between the effects of CO 2 fertilization and increased aridity on dryland vegetation cover are still poorly understood. Long-term experiments on the interactions between physical–chemical–biological processes across spatial and temporal scales, such as large-scale field surveys using standardized protocols, are needed to better manage drylands in China and globally.

Abstract:Abstract Drylands cover 41% of Earth’s surface and are the largest source of interannual variability in the global carbon sink. Drylands are projected to experience accelerated expansion over the next century, but the implications of this expansion on variability in gross primary production (GPP) remain elusive. Here we show that by 2100 total dryland GPP will increase by 12 ± 3% relative to the 2000–2014 baseline. Because drylands will largely expand into formerly productive ecosystems, this increase in dryland GPP may not increase global GPP. Further, GPP per unit dryland area will decrease as degradation of historical drylands outpaces the higher GPP of expanded drylands. Dryland expansion and climate-induced conversions among sub-humid, semi-arid, arid, and hyper-arid subtypes will lead to substantial changes in regional and subtype contributions to global dryland GPP variability. Our results highlight the vulnerability of dryland subtypes to more frequent and severe climate extremes and suggest that regional variations will require different mitigation strategies.

Abstract:As a sensitive region, identifying land cover change in drylands is critical to understanding global environmental change. However, the current findings related to land cover change in drylands are not uniform due to differences in data and methods among studies. We compared and judged the spatial and temporal characteristics, driving forces, and ecological effects by identifying the main findings of land cover change in drylands at global and regional scales (especially in China) to strengthen the overall understanding of land cover change in drylands. Four main points were obtained. First, while most studies found that drylands were experiencing vegetation greening, some evidence showed decreases in vegetation and large increases in bare land due to inconsistencies in the datasets and the study phases. Second, the dominant factors affecting land cover change in drylands are precipitation, agricultural activities, and urban expansion. Third, the impact of land cover change on the water cycle, especially the impact of afforestation on water resources in drylands, is of great concern. Finally, drylands experience severe land degradation and require dataset matching (classification standards, resolution, etc.) to quantify the impact of human activities on land cover.

Abstract:Drylands cover 40% of the global terrestrial surface and provide important ecosystem services. While drylands as a whole are expected to increase in extent and aridity in coming decades, temperature and precipitation forecasts vary by latitude and geographic region suggesting different trajectories for tropical, subtropical, and temperate drylands. Uncertainty in the future of tropical and subtropical drylands is well constrained, whereas soil moisture and ecological droughts, which drive vegetation productivity and composition, remain poorly understood in temperate drylands. Here we show that, over the twenty first century, temperate drylands may contract by a third, primarily converting to subtropical drylands, and that deep soil layers could be increasingly dry during the growing season. These changes imply major shifts in vegetation and ecosystem service delivery. Our results illustrate the importance of appropriate drought measures and, as a global study that focuses on temperate drylands, highlight a distinct fate for these highly populated areas.

Nature-based framework for sustainable afforestation in global drylands under changing climate

Abstract:Drylands cover more than 40% of Earth's land surface and occur at the margin of forest distributions due to the limited availability of water for tree growth. Recent elevated temperature and low precipitation have driven greater forest declines and pulses of tree mortality on dryland sites compared to humid sites, particularly in temperate Eurasia and North America. Afforestation of dryland areas has been widely implemented and is expected to increase in many drylands globally to enhance carbon sequestration and benefits to the human environment, but the interplay of sometimes conflicting afforestation outcomes has not been formally evaluated yet. Most previous studies point to conflicts between additional forest area and water consumption, in particular water yield and soil conservation/desalinization in drylands, but were generally confined to local and regional scales. Our global synthesis demonstrates that additional tree cover can amplify water consumption through a nonlinear increase in evapotranspiration-depending on tree species, age, and structure-which will be further intensified by future climate change. In this review we identify substantial knowledge gaps in addressing the dryland afforestation dilemma, where there are trade-offs with planted forests between increased availability of some resources and benefits to human habitats versus the depletion of other resources that are required for sustainable development of drylands. Here we propose a method of addressing comprehensive vegetation carrying capacity, based on regulating the distribution and structure of forest plantations to better deal with these trade-offs in forest multifunctionality. We also recommend new priority research topics for dryland afforestation, including: responses and feedbacks of dryland forests to climate change; shifts in the ratio of ecosystem ET to tree cover; assessing the role of scale of afforestation in influencing the trade-offs of dryland afforestation; and comprehensive modeling of the multifunctionality of dryland forests, including both ecophysiological and socioeconomic aspects, under a changing climate.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions Drive Global Dryland Expansion but Not Spatial Patterns of Change in Aridification

Abstract:Abstract Drylands play an essential role in Earth’s environment and human systems. Although dryland expansion has been widely investigated in previous studies, there is a lack of quantitative evidence supporting human-induced changes in dryland extent. Here, using multiple observational datasets and model simulations from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, we employ both correlation-based and optimal fingerprinting approaches to conduct quantitative detection and attribution of dryland expansion. Our results show that spatial changes in atmospheric aridity (i.e., the aridity index defined by the ratio of precipitation to potential evapotranspiration) between the recent period 1990–2014 and the past period 1950–74 are unlikely to have been caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, it is very likely (at least 95% confidence level) that dryland expansion at the global scale was driven principally by GHG emissions. Over the period 1950–2014, global drylands expanded by 3.67% according to observations, and the dryland expansion attributed to GHG emissions is estimated as ∼4.5%. Drylands are projected to continue expanding, and their populations to increase until global warming reaches ∼3.5°C above preindustrial temperature under the middle- and high-emission scenarios. If warming exceeds ∼3.5°C, a reduction in population density would drive a decrease in dryland population. Our results for the first time provide quantitative evidence for the dominant effects of GHG emissions on global dryland expansion, which is helpful for anthropogenic climate change adaptation in drylands. Significance Statement In the past decades, global drylands have been reported to show changes in space and time, based on atmospheric aridity (i.e., aridity index defined by the ratio of precipitation to potential evapotranspiration). Using two detection and attribution methods, the spatial change patterns of atmospheric aridity between 1990–2014 and 1950–74 are unlikely to be driven by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, whereas the temporal expansion of global drylands (i.e., 3.67% from 1950 to 2014) is principally attributed to GHG emissions (contribution: ∼122%). Quantitative evidence from the detection and attribution analysis supports the dominant role of greenhouse gas emissions in global dryland expansion, which will increase the population suffering from water shortages under future warming unless climate adaptation is adopted.

Future Drought in the Dry Lands of Asia under the 1.5 and 2.0 °C Warming Scenarios

Abstract:Drought has become a major threat to local sustainable development in dryland Asia, one of the largest grassland ecosystems in the world. However, empirical‐ and science‐based evidence regarding the extent of drought changes and the future trends of these changes in dryland Asia is variable and incomplete. Here, we first investigate the historical variations in drought conditions in dryland Asia, as measured by the drought intensity and arid area, using three widely used drought indices (the Palmer Drought Severity Index, the Standardized Precipitation Index, and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index). Then, we use Bayesian model averaging to reproduce the future drought conditions under two representative concentration pathways (RCP2.6 and RCP4.5) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 Earth system models. The Palmer Drought Severity Index, Standardized Precipitation Index, and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index illustrate that dryland Asia has experienced an overall drying trend and an expansion of arid areas over the past 100 years (1901–2016). Both temperature and precipitation are projected to increase under both the 1.5 and 2.0 °C warming scenarios compared with the values from the reference period (1986–2005). The projected drought conditions in the 1.5 and 2.0 °C warming scenarios will worsen, especially across Kazakhstan and Northwest China. We found that the drought conditions under the 2.0 °C warming conditions will not be as severe as those under the 1.5 °C warming conditions due to the mitigating effect of the projected precipitation increase under RCP4.5. These results call for short‐term and long‐term mitigation and adaptation measurements for drought events in dryland Asia.
Recent Global Distribution of Aridity Index and Land Use in Arid Regions

Abstract:Drylands, which occupy 41% of Earth's land area, have large effects on Earth's climate via land-atmosphere interactions, and simulations of future climate indicate that drylands will be very sensitive to climate changes associated with global warming. Monitoring of drylands is therefore necessary to help guide sustainable development in drylands and to protect the global environment. This study examined changes of the global distribution of the aridity index from 2000 to 2020 and compared them to changes from 1951 to 1980. The regions with relatively wet climates, that is, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions, became drier from 2000 to 2020. The largest use of land in drylands was grassland, followed by open shrubland, cropland, savanna, and woody savanna. More than 50% of dry land was accounted for by grasslands (18,651,109 km2) and dryland forests including shrubland and savanna (13,331,231 km2). The relationship between the aridity index and the normalized difference vegetation index indicated that the value of the aridity index of dryland forests and grasslands equaled the threshold for climatically stable existence, although the range of the aridity index was wide in both cases. We also made rough assessments of soil organic carbon sequestration in dryland forests and grasslands.

Abstract:Dryland expansion causes widespread water scarcity and biodiversity loss. Although the drying influence of global warming is well established, the role of existing drylands in their own expansion is relatively unknown. In this work, by tracking the air flowing over drylands, we show that the warming and drying of that air contributes to dryland expansion in the downwind direction. As they dry, drylands contribute less moisture and more heat to downwind humid regions, reducing precipitation and increasing atmospheric water demand, which ultimately causes their aridification. In ~40% of the land area that recently transitioned from a humid region into a dryland, self-expansion accounted for >50% of the observed aridification. Our results corroborate the urgent need for climate change mitigation measures in drylands to decelerate their own expansion. Editor’s summary Drylands, regions in which atmospheric water demand considerably exceeds precipitation, occupy nearly half of Earth’s land surface. How will they respond to our warming climate? Koppa et al. show that the warm, dry air flowing over drylands contributes to downwind dryland expansion and can cause the aridification of those areas. Global evaluation of current and future threats to drylands and their vertebrate biodiversity

Abstract:Drylands are often overlooked in broad conservation frameworks and development priorities and face increasing threats from human activities. Here we evaluated the formal degree of protection of global drylands, their land vertebrate biodiversity and current threats, and projected human-induced land-use changes to drylands under different future climate change and socioeconomic scenarios. Overall, drylands have lower protected-area coverage (12%) compared to non-drylands (21%). Consequently, most dryland vertebrates including many endemic and narrow-ranging species are inadequately protected (0-2% range coverage). Dryland vertebrates are threatened by varied anthropogenic factors-including agricultural and infrastructure development (that is, artificial structures, surfaces, roads and industrial sites). Alarmingly, by 2100 drylands are projected to experience some degree of land conversion in 95-100% of their current natural habitat due to urban, agricultural and alternative energy expansion. This loss of undisturbed dryland regions is expected across different socioeconomic pathways, even under optimistic scenarios characterized by progressive climate policies and moderate socioeconomic trends.

Abstract:Drylands, as highly vulnerable ecosystems, support environmental functions and human well-being. Nevertheless, widespread land degradation and desertification present significant global and regional environmental challenges, with limited consensus on their area and degree. This study used time-series vegetation productivity and meteorological data from 2000 to 2020 to quantify global land degradation trends and driving factors in drylands. The results show a notable restoration of land degradation in drylands worldwide, with the area of improved land exceeding the degraded area by 1.4 times, although the threat of degradation persists. India and China emerge as pioneers in effective land improvement strategies, offering valuable experiences for other regions. Combined effects, as quantitatively distinguished by our established model, dominate the degradation and improvement processes. Notably, human activities play a decisive role in influencing land degradation trends, with the potential for either exacerbation or reversal. This study provides new perspectives on environmental health and human activities from global and regional observations. Finally, our research provides scientific support for desertification control and contributes to the overall advancement of the SDGs globally.

Abstract:This study shows that increasing aridity in drylands has a significant impact on the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles within plant–soil systems, as well as on biodiversity and ecosystem services across different scales. As aridity increases, soil organic carbon, nutrient, and water content decrease, which can lead to the loss of critical ecosystem services. By 2100, half of the world's landmass may become dryland, creating significant challenges for maintaining essential services, impacting human well‐being, and raising global and regional socio‐political issues. Drylands, comprising semi‐arid, arid, and hyperarid regions, cover approximately 41% of the Earth's land surface and have expanded considerably in recent decades. Even under more optimistic scenarios, such as limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2100, semi‐arid lands may increase by up to 38%. This study provides an overview of the state‐of‐the‐art regarding changing aridity in arid regions, with a specific focus on its effects on the accumulation and availability of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in plant–soil systems. Additionally, we summarized the impacts of rising aridity on biodiversity, service provisioning, and feedback effects on climate change across scales. The expansion of arid ecosystems is linked to a decline in C and nutrient stocks, plant community biomass and diversity, thereby diminishing the capacity for recovery and maintaining adequate water‐use efficiency by plants and microbes. Prolonged drought led to a −3.3% reduction in soil organic carbon (SOC) content (based on 148 drought‐manipulation studies), a −8.7% decrease in plant litter input, a −13.0% decline in absolute litter decomposition, and a −5.7% decrease in litter decomposition rate. Moreover, a substantial positive feedback loop with global warming exists, primarily due to increased albedo. The loss of critical ecosystem services, including food production capacity and water resources, poses a severe challenge to the inhabitants of these regions. Increased aridity reduces SOC, nutrient, and water content. Aridity expansion and intensification exacerbate socio‐economic disparities between economically rich and least developed countries, with significant opportunities for improvement through substantial investments in infrastructure and technology. By 2100, half the world's landmass may become dryland, characterized by severe conditions marked by limited C, N, and P resources, water scarcity, and substantial loss of native species biodiversity. These conditions pose formidable challenges for maintaining essential services, impacting human well‐being and raising complex global and regional socio‐political challenges.

Abstract:Droughts of the future are likely to be more frequent, severe, and longer lasting than they have been in recent decades, but drought risks will be lower if greenhouse gas emissions are cut aggressively. This review presents a synopsis of the tools required for understanding the statistics, physics, and dynamics of drought and its causes in a historical context. Although these tools have been applied most extensively in the United States, Europe, and the Amazon region, they have not been as widely used in other drought-prone regions throughout the rest of the world, presenting opportunities for future research. Water resource managers, early career scientists, and veteran drought researchers will likely see opportunities to improve our understanding of drought.

Past and future adverse response of terrestrial water storages to increased vegetation growth in drylands

Abstract:The response of terrestrial water storages to dryland vegetation growth remains poorly understood. Using multiple proxies from satellite observations and model outputs, we show an overall increase (decrease) in vegetation growth (terrestrial water storages) across drylands globally during 1982–2016. Terrestrial water storages in greening drylands correlate negatively with vegetation growth, particularly for cropland-dominated regions, and such response is pronounced when the growth rate of vegetation productivity is high. Reduction in terrestrial water storage is dominated by precipitation and evapotranspiration variability rather by than runoff. We predict reduction in terrestrial water storage of 41–84% by 2100, accompanying expansion of drylands by 4.1–10.6%. Our findings, which indicate sustained adverse response of terrestrial water storage to vegetation growth in drylands, highlight the need for concerted planning for balanced ecological restoration, agricultural management, and water resource utilization that will affect 5.17 billion people, 64% of whom live in developing countries.
