Abstract:An electrically tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with operation based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and phase modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this OEO configuration, the phase modulator in combination with an optical filter is employed to produce a frequency-doubling microwave signal, while the SBS effect provides the narrowband filtering and ensures the oscillation of the feedback driving signal at the fundamental frequency. By varying the Brillouin pump signal obtained from double-sideband-carrier-suppression modulation, the frequency tunability is realized. In our experiment, a continuous tunable frequency-doubling signal from 21.4 to 25 GHz is generated when the tuning signal applied to the intensity modulator is tuned from 200 MHz to 2 GHz.

Abstract:Microwave signals with broadband tunable frequencies and low phase noise can be widely used in communication systems and radar systems. Optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs) with high Q value have the potential to generate the signals meeting the above requirements. In this paper, we present a simple scheme to realize a widely tunable OEO with ultra-high tuning resolution based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), meanwhile maintaining the low phase noise for all the generated frequencies. By choosing different high-order sideband of the phase-modulated signal as the SBS pump, the frequency of the generated signal can be widely tuned. The accurate frequency tuning can be achieved by changing the drive signal frequency of the phase modulator. As a result, the obtained signal of the OEO with the frequency tuning range up to 40 GHz, and the tuning resolution as accurate as 10 MHz can be obtained. The influence of the SBS gain and the drive signal on the signal phase noise is analyzed theoretically. The effects of the drive signal and the electrical amplifier on the phase noise of the obtained signal are analyzed experimentally. The results show that the noise figure of the amplifier directly affects the phase noise quality of the acquired signal. And the phase noise of the generated signals is lower than -120 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset frequency, which has no relation with the drive signal, or the order of the modulation sideband. Abstract:An optically tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and carrier phase-shifted double sideband (CPS-DSB) modulation is proposed and demonstrated. SBS effect provides narrowband filtering for the OEO to generate an oscillation signal with frequency equal to the Brillouin frequency shift, while a CPS-DSB modulation by using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator is implemented to double the oscillation frequency. Owing to the wavelength-dependent Brillouin frequency shift, frequency tunability is realized by tuning the wavelength of the laser source. In the experiments, frequency-doubling microwave signals from 18.38 to 18.74 GHz are generated when the wavelength of the laser source is tuned from 1565 to 1535 nm.

Abstract:A wideband tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on the deamplification of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A tunable single passband microwave photonic filter (MPF) utilizing phase modulation and SBS deamplification is used to realize the tunability of the OEO. Theoretical analysis of the MPF and phase noise performance of the OEO are presented. The frequency response of the MPF is determined by the + 1st sideband attenuation due to SBS deamplification and phase shift difference between the two sidebands due to chromatic dispersion and SBS. The close-in (< 1 MHz) phase noise of the proposed OEO is shown to be dominated by the laser frequency noise via phase shift of SBS. The conversion of the laser frequency noise to the close-in phase noise of the proposed OEO is effectively reduced compared with the OEO based on amplification by SBS. Tunable 7 to 40 GHz signals are experimentally obtained. The single-sideband (SSB) phase noise at 10 kHz offset is -128 dBc/Hz for 10.30 GHz signal. Compared with the OEO based on SBS amplification, the proposed OEO can achieve a phase noise performance improvement beyond 20 dB at 10 kHz offset. The maximum frequency and power drifts at 10.69 GHz are within 1 ppm and 1.4 dB during 1000 seconds, respectively. To achieve better close-in phase noise performance, lower frequency noise laser and higher pump power are preferred. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical models.

Abstract:A wideband frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a narrowband phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PSFBG) and wavelength tuning of the laser is proposed and demonstrated. With assistance of an optical single-sideband modulator, the PSFBG with a narrow transmission peak acts like an equivalent high-Q microwave filter to select the oscillation frequency. Frequency tunability of the OEO can be simply realized by tuning the wavelength of a laser source. An X-band optoelectronic oscillating signal with frequency tunable at wide range from 8.4 to 11.8 GHz is generated and its performance is investigated in the experiment.
Tunable DC-60 GHz RF Generation Utilizing a Dual-Loop Optoelectronic Oscillator Based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering

Abstract:A dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is experimentally demonstrated. Two lasers are utilized to realize the tunability of the OEO. One acts as the signal laser, the other is employed as the pump laser. By directly tuning the wavelength of the pump laser, a widely tunable range from DC to 60 GHz for the RF signal generation can be obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest fundamental frequency tunable range which has ever been achieved by an OEO. With dual-loop fiber lengths of 2 km and 4 km, the single sideband (SSB) phase noise is measured to be -100 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset when the oscillation frequency is chosen as 5 GHz, 10 GHz or 20 GHz. The side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is 35 dB when the oscillation frequency is 10 GHz. The stability of both frequency and power of the proposed OEO is improved with the dual-loop configuration when compared with the single-loop one. The Allan variances of the frequency fluctuation at 1-s average are 1.2×10-7 and 4.9×10-11 for the single-loop and dual-loop configurations, respectively. Furthermore, a phase noise model based on control theory to evaluate the SSB phase noise performance of the dual-loop OEO based on SBS is detailed for the first time. The experimental phase noise results agree well with the proposed phase noise model at an offset frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz. Among different phase noise tests, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise induced by SBS is shown theoretically and experimentally to be the dominant source for the phase noise beyond 100 kHz frequency offset in the proposed OEO.

Abstract:Microwave signals with high frequency, flexible tunability, and low phase noise are highly desired in signal processing and radar systems. In this letter, an optical injection-locking scheme using the high-order phase modulation sideband is introduced to realize a stable Brillouin optoelectronic oscillator (OEO). Pure microwave signals up to 40 GHz with low phase noise are obtained using an electrical drive signal below 5 GHz. A flexible frequency tuning with high resolution of 8 MHz is maintained by controlling the electrical drive signal and the slave laser, and the side mode suppression ratio is higher than 60 dB. The phase noise of the OEO-generated microwave signals under different master lasers is measured and compared to verify the significance of the master lasers with ultralow frequency noise. The maximum frequency drift of a 10.79-GHz signal is 1.4 kHz within 600 s, showing the stability of the proposed Brillouin OEO.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a frequency tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a spectral-subtraction-induced microwave photonic filter (MPF), which is implemented by a subtraction operation of transmission responses between two high-pass filters of different cutoff frequency. By changing the bandwidth of a tunable optical filter or the wavelengths of two laser sources, the central frequency of the synthesized single-pass MPF is shifted and the oscillation frequency of OEO can be tuned. In the experiment, frequency-tunable oscillation signals from 7.8 to 14.2 GHz at a step of ~ 1.25 GHz are generated and its performance is investigated.

Abstract:ABSTRACTAn optical tunable dual‐loop optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on birefringence effects in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is presented and the theoretical fundamentals of the design are explained. A prototype of the OEO with a frequency of 8.8 GHz is experimentally demonstrated. About 150 MHz tunable range at X‐band with a fine step about 15 MHz is realized by directly tuning the SOA injection current, and the tuning speed can reach to over 1 GHz/µs. The generated radiofrequency (RF) signal exhibits a good stability with a single sideband phase noise lower than −101 dBc/Hz at an offset of 10 kHz within the whole tunable range, without any narrow RF band‐pass filters in the loop. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A finely frequency tunable coupled optoelectronic oscillator (COEO) based on injection locking and phase locked loop is proposed and demonstrated. By investigating a dynamic relation between the frequency locking range and injection locking ratio, an optimum injection locking ratio with sufficient locking range is obtained so as finely frequency tracking and locking with high stability is achieved by tuning the frequency of the injected signal and controlling an optical tunable delay line (OTDL). Through optimizing the injection ratio, a trade-off between the suppression of the near-carrier phase noise and the excellent far-carrier phase noise is realized. In the experiment, a high quality COEO with a tuning range of 1.76 MHz and a precise tuning step of 10 Hz is demonstrated. The measured sidemode suppression ratio (SMSR) at 9.95554 GHz reaches 78.2 dB, and a frequency drift of better than 1 ppb during a 1-hour is observed. The phase noise at 10 kHz offset is measured to be −130.04 dBc/Hz, and the Allan deviation (ADEV) reaches 1.39 × 10 −13 at averaged time of 100 s.

Abstract:We demonstrate a stable and finely tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. In the proposed scheme, the optical carrier in the OEO loop and the Brillouin pump light is generated by a single laser source, which guarantees the frequency stability of the output microwave signal from the OEO. Frequency tuning is achieved by varying the pump frequency via an electro-optic frequency shifter composed of a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) and an electrical 90° hybrid. Through subtly varying the frequency of the low-frequency microwave signal applied to the DPMZM, a finely tunable high-frequency microwave signal can be obtained from the OEO. In the proof-of-concept experiment, the output frequency of the OEO is tuned from 10.645 GHz to 12.645 GHz with a tuning resolution of 10 MHz. The stable performance of the OEO is also achieved, where the maximum frequency and power drifts at 11.145 GHz are measured to be 6.25 kHz (i.e., ∼ 0.6 p p m ) and 0.77 dB in a measurement time duration of 1000 s, respectively. Through using broadband devices in the OEO architecture, the proposed scheme can generate stable and finely tunable microwave signals up to 40 GHz or even higher.

Abstract:A tunable optoelectronic oscillator (TOEO) with coupled dual-loop (CDL) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is proposed. In our scheme, the CDL is constructed by cascading a dual-output Mach–Zehnder intensity modulator (DOMZM) and a single output Mach–Zehnder intensity modulator (MZM). One optical output of the DOMZM is directly injected to the MZM, and the other optical output of the DOMZM is transformed into microwave signals to modulate the MZM. The narrow gain spectrum of SBS is used to select the oscillation frequency and realize frequency tunability. By joining the CDL, we can not only increase side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) and decrease phase noise, but also improve stability of the TOEO. Experimental results show that microwave signals from 2 GHz to 18 GHz with the SMSR as high as 60 dB and the phase noise as low as −95 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz frequency offset are achieved. Furthermore, the frequency drift is less than 0.3 ppm and the power drift is lower than 0.2 dB at 10 GHz within 30 min in lab condition.

Abstract:A polarization multiplexed dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. The narrow bandwidth of SBS gain spectrum is utilized to implement the phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion and select the oscillation mode of the OEO. The polarization multiplexed dual-loop is constructed to suppress the side modes with Vernier effect. The output frequency of the OEO can be tuned by changing the frequency of the signal or the pump light wave. With the polarization multiplexed dual-loop the side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 45dB is achieved at 10GHz. The generated oscillation frequency is tuned from 4GHz to 16GHz by changing the frequency of the signal light wave. The phase noise decreases with the power increase of the signal light wave when it is under the threshold of SBS. By adjusting the polarization state of the light wave, the influence of the power distribution between the long loop and the short loop on the phase noise of the OEO is investigated. The results show that more power in the long loop is helpful to suppress the near end phase noise.

Abstract:A photonic radiofrequency (RF) receiver utilizing a phase modulator (PM) and a tunable single sideband (SSB) optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this scheme, the RF signal to be detected is modulated on the PM in one optical path, while a local oscillation (LO) signal is optically generated by the SSB OEO in the other optical path. After combining two paths of optical signals via an optical coupler, an immediate frequency (IF) signal is obtained by photonic RF downconversion in a photodetector (PD). Through scanning the LO signal and monitoring the IF signal simultaneously, the input unknown RF signal can be detected. In the experiment, the RF tones with the operating frequency from 8.1 to 12.1 GHz are successfully detected. The minimum detectable RF power at 10.1 GHz is −84.6 dBm, and the spurious free dynamic range of the photonic RF receiver measured is about 73.8 dB/Hz2/3.

Abstract:A novel realization of a tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) and two tunable microwave phase shifters (PS) is experimentally demonstrated. By adjusting the time delay of the microwave signal which is sent to two radio frequency (RF) ports of DPMZM, the center frequency of the multiband microwave photonics filter (MMPF) can be tuned. When the OEO feedback loop is closed, single-frequency microwave signals with a tuning range from 3.6 to 15.6 GHz are generated. The side mode suppression ratio is 67 dB, and the phase noise is measured to be - 104 dBc/Hz when the oscillation frequency is 9.2 GHz. The frequency drift is less than 24 kHz in 1600 s without phase-locked or compensation devices.

Abstract:To obtain low-phase-noise microwave signals with a widely tunable frequency range, an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) was constructed on the basis of an optically injected semiconductor laser (OISL) for the generation of high-quality microwave signals. Our OEO relied on the effect of wavelength-selective amplification and the period-one (P1) oscillation under optical injection. The signal's frequency stability, side-mode-suppression ratio (SMSR) and linewidth were optimized by the subharmonic microwave modulation technique in the OEO loop. The experimental results showed that the frequency of the signal obtained by the proposed OEO could be tuned up to 18 GHz. Using the dual-loop OEO structure, the SMSR was increased to 55 dB. Moreover, the phase noise of the obtained microwave signal was lower than -81 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz frequency offset and -119 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz frequency offset. This was achieved by introducing subharmonic microwave modulation in the OEO loop, respectively. Furthermore, via the utilization of a Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) in the proposed structure, a dual-loop OEO with different dual-frequency configurations (which could be tuned up to 12 and 18 GHz) was obtained.

Abstract:A highly sensitive demodulation approach of a vibration-induced phase shift based on a low-noise optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The vibration-induced optical phase variation is directly converted to the electrical oscillating signal of the OEO with carrier phase-shifted double-sideband (CPS-DSB) modulation, which is realized by cascading a dual-output Mach-Zehnder modulator (DOMZM) and a fiber interferometer. Theoretically, within a CPS-DSB modulated OEO, the minimum detectable optical phase shift is determined by the phase noise achievable, and the sensitivity of the optical phase shift demodulation no longer depends on its frequency. A proof-of-concept OEO oscillating at 100 MHz with ultralow phase noise is built for demonstration. The achieved minimum detectable optical phase shift is 0.58 mu rad / root Hz at 1 kHz and 0.21 mu rad / root Hz at 10 kHz, which are the best results ever reported, to the best of our knowledge. Abstract:A widely tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a broadband phase modulator and a tunable optical bandpass filter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A tunable range from 4.74 to 38.38 GHz is realized by directly tuning the bandwidth of the optical bandpass filter. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest fundamental frequency tunable range ever achieved by an OEO. The phase noise performance of the generated signal is also investigated. The single-sideband phase noise is below -120 dBc/Hz at an offset of 10 KHz within the whole tunable range.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an approach to generating wide-range tunable coherent dual-frequency microwave signals with high side-mode suppression ratios (SMSRs), ultra-low phase noise and high stability, based on a dual-passband optoelectronic oscillator (OEO). The narrowband passband with a relatively high gain is used to generate the initial oscillation at a fixed frequency. Through injecting a single-tone signal into the OEO cavity via a microwave mixer, frequency-tunable oscillation in the other broadband passband with a relatively low gain is initiated through frequency mixing injection locking. Then, the two oscillation signals are phase-locked through frequency mixing mutual injection locking. In addition, a dual-loop configuration with the assistance of balanced photodetection is utilized to suppress the side modes and improve the phase noise performance, which also enhances the stability of the generated signal. In the experiment, coherent dual-frequency microwave signals with a fixed frequency at 20.0056 GHz and a tunable frequency in the range of 13.9705 GHz to 18.0075 GHz are generated, where the frequency tuning step is 625.6 kHz. The power fluctuation during frequency tuning is smaller than 1.5 dB, and the SMSRs are larger than 77 dB. In addition, the Allan deviation and the phase noise are in the order of 10(-11)@1 s and better than -138 dBc/Hz@10 kHz, respectively.
